shanks duel equally with Mikawk. Shanks loses arm to seaking. Luffy oneshots seaking. Luffy carries a sword. power scaling according to feats concludes that Luffy is the worlds greatest swordsman.
not like he needs another arm when he has 1 sword though. anyone with a sword or weapon imbues their haki into the weapon. hawkeye saying he has no interest dueling shanks after he lost an arm is simply because you dont want to loose twice, 2nd time being handicapped.

21:38 I think Shanks is actually left handed. He has his sheath on his right side, which is usually opposite of the hand you fight with (he still does now). I think also therefore Mihawk does not want to fight him anymore, as he has lost his dominant arm.
@@angelguerena8911 Good spot! It can be seen in the anime in the flashback how Luffy got his scar. Now imagine how strong he would be with his left arm...
Almost no doubt on the left hand thing. If I am not wrong, in the flashback or whatever to boogie and shanks being on the crew. Shanks is shown to hold his sword in his left hand. Well he could be good with both I guess. I guess Zorro is just as strong with both hands.
@@zhoupact8567 I'm pretty sure zoro always uses his right hand when using only one sword, just because he uses three swords doesn't necessarily mean his off hand and head are equal to his dominant arm.
Ok my opinion, shanks had a hunch about luffy, a weird nostalgic feeling he couldn't describe, he only really saw Roger's will after he saw how luffy protected a pirates honour by confronting the bandits, then after that when shanks made the bet he needed to confirm his inner suspicions, it was then confirmed to shanks when luffy said that he doesnt wanna join shanks, (as he begged previous) he was gonna make his own crew and become the pirate king , that is when shanks knew 100% and gave luffy the straw hat, I think after wano arc we will learn more about the next stage of conquerors haki and realise more about shanks strength, its obvious to me shanks is the OG out of everyone in one piece when it comes to the kings haki, kaido, big mom, whitebeard and blackbeard all have OP devil fruits, shanks trait is his kings haki which makes him a cut above the rest, and probably the last revealed yonko who will give us more insight into luffys last lesson in becoming the king of the pirates, his last and best power up that will make him worthy to be seen throughout the world (and one piece world), I cant wait, could be wrong but hey? Thanks for the content tekken you always make us laugh and make good points to think about, also your a cringelord, same here lol 👍
yea even krocus former roger pirate or the guy with laboon in one piece when luffy and his crew left krocus said ''this boy might be the one we have been waiting for'' krocus and shanks reckon luffy might just be the future pirate king even rayleigh saw roger in luffy like a lot of people in one piece always see roger in luffy even pedro its like people who meet luffy its like they are just with roger all over again cause luffy reminds them of roger also when luffy said pirate king is having the most freedom thats when rayleigh really saw the simalarities
Well actually, when I watched fairy tail, I've noticed that so many of the character designs are absolutely identical to some from other anime. Remember that shadow dude from the wind scythe dude arc? That's shikamaru from naruto. Remember Evergreen? That's Khalifa from op Remember Gildarts? That's shanks.
@@nixixim DUde the mangaka straight up copies the flow of so many other manga arcs. I heard that the arc with Laxus is from hitman reborn and thats the best arc of fairy tail lol.
Yo, I think he really meant it when he said he gambled it for the future. I think he might have used Observation to see luffy's location and realized he could only get there in time if he gave up his arm. Kinda like when someone pushes a person out of the way of a train or car. With regards to why he didn't use CQ haki, I think the activation of his CQ would be slower than him at full speed.
Oda still regrets Shanks losing his arm (according to magazine interview). The editorial department wanted the scene to be more dramatic so he lost his arm.
everyone in the editorial department needs to die for this stupidity that ruined shanks.. how can one of the strongest character lose his arm to a seaking.. this is the biggest plothole in all of anime.
@@misterymindz Not really, let's say he's as powerful as he is now, he very well could of been too worried about luffy to think of using armanent, and saw with observations that any way to not get hit by the seaking would of meant Luffy would of been killed or hurt in the process. He's a badass, but he's not a God, nor do we know when Shanks got there, for all we know, he swam a mile in 0.1 seconds or less, seeing Luffy nanoseconds before the seaking actually got Luffy. So it certainly isn't a plothole, it's just damaging to some people's suspension of disbelief.
I thought that conquerers could be used to tame or intimidate animals, luffy has done that on multiple occasions. The way I see it is that shanks couldn’t have saved luffy without losing his arm in the process. So he bet that losing his arm would be worth it in the long run because luffy will be the pirate king.
How could he only save him by losing his arm? He could’ve cut the thing into mince meat, he could’ve knocked it out with conquerors, he teleported to save luffy so why did he stay there in front of the sea king? So many questions I have
Zoro has intimidated animals with his presence a couple times as well as others with no confirmed CoC. It's an anime trope, if we start using intimidation as a factor than there's about to be a lot of potential Kings in the series lol.
I kinda feel like the only person who wishes shanks wasn't strong...I would of loved it if the reason he lost his arm and had his crew kill the bandit and why he didn't take offense in the bar is because hes just not strong...like imagine how interesting the show would be if shanks was weak and his ability was to be able to talk to you or show you hes a good guy not meaning harm and getting you to agree with him or something or just intimidate you...like how cool would that be that he isn't using power to gain his goals or earn yonko status a huge crew and gov respect just using his words and manipulation ability maybe even have some sort of devil fruit that allows him to convince you to be on his side or scare you that he pulls out in key situations and we don't know this until the end of the series...nope oda just had to mess up what I thought was his character and make him cliché strong guy number 1000 cause fanservice...he was introduced so uniquely until the scene on whitebeards ship...kings haki is fine but like im so mad that oda made him a fighter ..thats so lame...I wanted him to be a ultimate pacifist user of people more than a typical shonnen hero figure....he reminded me of iruka from Naruto but more important...like how smart would that be..its different..thats better ..shanks being a good swordsman makes him poor mans rayeligh or mihawk….like we already have characters like that..we don't need another...
Whitebeard: "To what enemy did you give that left arm to?" 🍶 Shanks (dub version): "I gave it, to a kid.." Whitebeard: "Wut? You gave your arm to kid? Tf is wrong with you?" Shanks: "Uh no, that's not what...I mean, I waged it on a new era--" Whitebeard: "Shut tf up you ginger and gtfo of my ship." 💀
Everyone who are underestimating shanks because big mom and kaido are hyped and already introduced don't know that he will be introduced last is going to have some crazy ass super powers.
Well think of it this way champs beat kaido to get to the marineford war. Took him 3 days to get past his ship was not damaged he wasn't wounded or healing. So everything we have seen about kaido the red hair crew because I'm sure the crew fought him as a whole it's well establishes no-one wins 1v1. But the shanks crew fought and beat kaido so we kinda allready know he's a badass. Anyone going crazy over kaido needs to remember kaido has been defeated and captured by marines multiple times he's very very beatable
Mind u he block akinu punch with weak hand sword.. without no haki coated 😂😂 also no one could fight him there and then.. he is well respected man in one piece.. yah hes OP but I cant compare to kaido? I haven't seen him yet
@@dc1842 Well, he didnt exactly beat Kaido. He hold Kaido off. Kaido wanted to go to marineford to kill whitebeard. So we can assume that once it was announced that whitebeard was dead, Kaido no longer had any interest. Then you also have the odds that Shanks challenged him to a drinking duel.
Oda is a flexible writter, he adds ambiguous threads that he can later pull whichever way the story later needs. Introduce a badass character in chapter 1? Give him a scar, later on the question will arise "who gave Shanks his defining scar?". A few scenes with him and his jolly roger here and there, and boom Oda instantly builds up Blackbeard.
Exactly....even if this is "retconing" it's retconing the proper way.....you plant the seeds...then decide later the fruits that it will bear.....which isn't really retconing to begin with...this is what i believe he did with The Germa and we know for certain the Supernovas.....
Dark Knight It’s great writing. Leave shit vague and if you want to build something around it/come up with an idea then it doesn’t create a plot hole in the story. I’m POSITIVE he’s done this with Sanji, Zoro Maybe for Wano since his beginning life is open, Shanks etx
fanboys be like. lol what wagered to the next generation BS. he can intimidate seaking which means he has conquerors. but he lost the bandit and luffy to the smoke. got his arm bitten off he’s supposed to have armament. the reason revealed later on is just an excuse for the plot hole.
I think back then Oda had a general idea what he wanted to do or have done. And when shanks lost his arm, it was more of an idea that he was betting luffy could carry on the legacy of roger. Not really a on purpose loosing the arm, but maybe more of a “oh crap luffy’s gonna die if i do nothing”. And from “recklessness” and love for luffy, his arm was taken. All of us do crazy stuff from time to time when we didn’t actually need to or couldve had the situation easier if we were just calmer
@@abdullahnasir8535 Yeah, he can see in the future, so he likely saw that Luffy would be killed or hurt in some way if he didn't lose the arm in return. So it's not really overruling his theory.
I want the Sea King he punches to come back near the end when Shirahoshi calls them to help for the final war, an it’s way bigger an is able to protect the Sonny Go during the conflict. Hahah just a brain burst your video had me think about. 😂
I think he was so late in saving Luffy that the seaking was milliseconds away from killing Luffy. So Shanks had no choice. Or he used it to shame Luffy into making him a Pirate after he saw Roger in him.
Of course it was intended. Also, Shanks already said that it was a BET. A bet is always intended, therefore there were no accidents... he made a bet on luffy that day.
DIAMONDORM yeah maybe oda was going to make it that fish that size were normal but like 3 months later had the sea king idea and oda has done that before (sabo not being dead)
Hello hearties. There is mantioned that Shanks at the start of the show, saw a little bit of Gol D Roger in Luffy beehive . From my point of view considering future plot, what Shanks does really saw in Luffy, was not Roger beehive but early Teach spirit(we know they clash before that period). You see that Luffy, at the begining is really chaotic, arrogant and has overconfident of what being pirate mean. He underestimate opponent. What was the real point of Shanks sacrifice, were to show our Hero that there is always something to lose in Pirate Life, and from that point on Luffy decide to not beeing scared of anything, during a fight for his dream, which became the difference between Him and Blackbeard.
When I started the series and first saw shanks I honestly thought he was just going to be an average weaker pirate which I still think would have been cool so when I got to find out he was Yonko and really strong it was pretty awesome and surprising
@Ron Jones Then what would he have been just some random guy? For what Shanks meant to Luffy and set up for him he was surely going to be someone important. I mean originally the Yonko were always going to be a thing in Oda's design from the start, so I think him being at such a status was going to be intended.
@@mrbubbles6468 Oda dropped the ball on setting haki up and even expanding it later while integrating it into a main power scheme. It's not the fans fault OP became a victim of it's own success and needs to be constantly stuffed full of patchwork fixes to handle the sheer weight of it's narrative.
Katakuri Fan Idk if it was forced, but yes the editors felt that the series was a bit lacking and this is how Oda decided to make it interesting. However, I think this video is discussing it from a character point of view, which is something important to consider. Pretty sure Tekking has mentioned the editor thingie before.
@Ron Jones Sorry but iirc in the SBS he said it was specifically the Warlords that he added later. The 4 Yonko were the original intended villains for Luffy to beat to become PK. If not, who was the main adversary to Luffy at the beginning?
Oda's original intention was just to add an impactful moment to the chapter, since his Editor told him it wasn't that interesting. I don't really think Oda thought about it much more than that in Chapter 1, and I think overthinking it is kind of silly. In narrative though I'd assume it was an accident, since there's no real value in sacrificing your arm to save someone if you can avoid it.
but isn't that the "impactful" moment....i mean isn't it more powerful to show luffy that this is how far a pirate goes for his nakama...this is how brave you must be.... showing that your willing to sacrifice your own well being for your crew, isn't this message more "impactfully" imparted when you literally demonstrate it the person you intend it..? To me that make more sense....narratively speaking......
22:44 It's exactly the same Luffy unintentionally did to Duvall's mount, so yeah, Conqueror's. And as you said, in the same chapter 1 of the manga, the Sea King (which is not that much smaller and Momoo, btw) ate Shanks arm and got one-shot by Luffy; if fresh-out-of-home Luffy can punch it unconscious, Shanks could have cut it into little pieces long before it ate his arm
Since we don't know which elements of Haki, sword slices were in his mind already, one can argue this question for hours. Sure, Whitebeard, thus Oda, stated Shanks had been on Yonko Level when going to East Blue, already. You have to keep in mind that only because Oda confirms Shanks being an Emperor in Chapter 300 or whatever does not confirm that Shanks was actually that strong at that time. Way back during chapter 1, Shanks was only as strong as Oda wanted him to be; and we will never 100% get to know what Oda thought about Shanks' power level. For example: One case could be that Oda wanted Shanks to be not one of the best but an over-average-strong pirate so Luffy actually needs some time and a longer adventure to reach his level. Inspiring Luffy to become a morally worthwile & strong pirate, does not require you to be one of the top 4 pirates of the world. You can interpret Shank's laughing at the bandit in the bar motionless in 3 ways: 1. He found himself to be way superior since facing a random bandit as an over-average pirate/ even Yonko 2. Considering Shanks' values, he laughed at the bandit's actions and most probable 3. A combination of both: He was strong already and thus was able to estimate the bandit's physical strength well. On top of that, we know that him beating a random bandit wasn't worth fighting for. So he remained passive and got mirrored by Luffy and Zoro in a pub with Bellamy. Now, if Shanks did lose his arm unintentionally, I am wondering whether.. Oda was thinking about establishing flying sword slices/ King's Haki, (Advanced/Awakened) Armament Haki at that time. If so, it wouldn't have made sense for Shanks to lose his arm since Ben Beckman or xyz could've easily shot that fish from the coast or Shanks used a flying sword slice, Armament Haki to not lose his arm/just kick the fish away in the first place or simply use king's haki. In this scenario, Shank's using King's Haki afterwards would be an unconcious act of him. In conclusion, we will never know. Oda is in the best position since he can take the topic of Shanks' arm loss in almost every imaginable way. After all, he could lie to the audience that Shanks allegedly lose his arm on purpose because he had seen extraordinary potential due to Luffy's will. If Oda lies and thereby takes the Shanks-lost-it-on-purpose-route, it's completely fine to me. In the end, it's not about Oda: Is he LYING or not... It's about the greater sake... the story of ONE PIECE If it needs him lying to make his story better/ more romantic with having Yonko Shanks telling his crew mates to stay out of this to swim alone to Luffy to save him by tributing his arm for the sake of maximising Luffy's will to become a GOOD pirate with Shanks' values? Then go ahead and do it. And this is probably the route Oda took, imo.
@@painvillegaming4119 yea ikr ofc he doesnt have a higher bounty when shanks was a kid apprentice on gol D. rogers ship whitebeard big mom ect were all a lot older than him so they got a headstart on there pirate journey
Don't forget Luffy's time with Sabo and Ace. Shanks probably knew some of those stories and what he had been through. Maybe he knew about Garp and Dragon as well.
I think you did kind of make this point somewhat by saying it was early one piece, but why doesn't anyone assume that at the point of chapter 1, Shanks simply might not have been anywhere near as strong as he was in later appearances? Even if he had lost his arm on purpose, that doesn't necessarily mean he was strong enough to fend off that sea king without any issues at that point in time. There had been a large period of time between appearances for Shanks while we are just following the Straw Hat crew; at chapter 1 he could have been reasonably well known and strong within the East Blue, but not anywhere near that of a Yonko or even a Shichibukai. He could have realistically grown to be as strong as he is in later appearances considering that he had a respectable head start on Luffy. Similarly, Luffy and the Straw Hats experience massive growth over the passage of time displayed in episodes and time skips based on the experiences they have; if Shanks is really living an adventure filled life and not just lazing around all the time, I could definitely believe he could have become this strong after being respectably weak.
Good point @TheEphemeralEternity I thought of it too, but if we assume it we also have to assome that Mihawk was weaker too since the reason he stopped fighting Shanks because he lost an arm, and we know that Shanks and Mihawk's fights were heard all trhough the grand line so that basicly debanks our theory :(
When Whitebeard and Shanks met again, Whitebeard said to him "When a man as great as you came back from East Blue missing an arm, everyone was surprised. What sort of enemy did you give it up to?" Implying he was already an extremely formidable man back then as well as a well known pirate in the Grand Line.
yeah...basically what the above comments stated...i mean luffy at the start of his journey managed to ohko that thing....I'm pretty sure the guy who fought equally with mihawk can do the same....
But that conversation with whitebeard tho... Whitebeard said that almost everyone in the one piece world was shocked when SHANKS came back form the east with one arm...
He wanted to have moment with Ben Beckman like A did with arui in Naruto; "I might have lost my arm but you are my right hand man" it's made a little fuzzy by Shanks losing his left arm but it was his dominant so, maybe
What if its both. He just wanted to save a kid and it cost his arm. Instead of admitting that he lost something, he JUSTIFIED his decision, to sound badass. Saving ANY CHILD is betting on the future, so its not even a lie.
Red Hairs vs mountain bandits is basically a word for word lesson to Luffy of what it actually means to be a pirate. Pretty much the entirety of Romance Dawn is based around this concept. Therefore I agree with you, he lost him arm to show Luffy how dangerous it is being a pirate, but also the importance of friendship etc. And he did a GREAT job
It's not that he lost it on accident, and it's not that he lost it just to make a "point" or whatever. In early onepiece, that was a dangerous beast, and if he wanted to save luffy he had to sacrifice his arm. So he did bet his arm on Luffy (by being willing to sacrifice the arm), but it's not like he could have saved Luffy and kept the arm. Atleast thats the only version that would make sense to me. I see no purpose in losing your arm for nothing. But on the other hand, after losing the arm he just looked at the Seaking, so it kinda seems like he might have been even then way stronger then the beast? But, maybe he was not much stronger then the Seaking (all in early one piece powerscaling levels) and it would have been a hard fight, but his resolve was so strong that the Seaking fucked off. And as we know, resolve is strenght. So in that way it would make sense, that he had to sacrifice his arm to save Luffy, but could still intimidate the Seaking. Buuut, I still can't totally rule out that he sacrificed it for no good reason. Because there a trend of that stupidity in One Piece. Olivia/Bellmere sacrificing her live and leaving Robin/Nami alone, for basically nothing, aside from making a statement? And Oda presents it as a great thing to do. So, maybe Oda thinks it makes sense to symbolicly chop of your own arm, to show how resolved you are in "betting" on the next generation.
I think thinking that the Sea King would have given him a competition is wrong. Haki is will power. If his will power is enough to scare the beast then the gap is way too big
Shanks sacrificing his arm for luffy made a compromise to luffy. He can't afford losing against anyone because he owes his life to shanks. Luffy suffered that shanks had to sacrifies his arm because of him being weak
Perhaps Roger gave Shanks the hat right before heading up to the gallows or turning himself in and told him “hey, lead this new era I’m about to start” (obviously not those exact words)
i like the theory that shanks was more concerned with protecting luffy that he didn't care what happened to him. hence him claiming it was a wager. he didn't lose an arm on purpose but expected to be hurt. also haki doesn't work right when the user is distracted.
I think Shanks lost his arm by accident. He had to act quickly in order to protect Luffy, he was willing to sacrifice his arm in exchange for Luffy’s life. He knew that Luffy would be a great pirate one day so the loss of his arm is a small price to pay... Even if Shanks was already able to use Haki back then, he wasn’t prepared to the attack of the Seaking, he had to act quickly. Shanks is also much stronger than Blackbeard, and still, he has a scar from him. This only shows us how malicious BB is. I think that you misunderstand what Shanks meant by “bet” on the New Age. If Shanks could have saved Luffy, without having his arm ripped off, he would have done it. Shanks is vulnerable like every other pirate. The fact that he lost his arm, and one second later intimidated the seaking with only one stare an made him flee, shows us Shanks incredible strength and how epic he is.
luffy at the start of his journey managed to Ohko that same sea king....Shanks,who at that point had duels with mihawk that whitebeard himself proclaimed to have echoed through out the grand line,i think could do the same.....and as for timing...well shanks is one for the most dramatic of entrances....So, until and unless oda comes out to confirm this, i think it's more plausible and believable to think shanks did it on purpose wouldn't you say? Though one things for certain....this just adds to the enigma that is....Red-haired Shanks!!
Dark Knight Shanks appeared in front of the Seaking right when he snapped after Luffy. Which is why he didn’t have time to save his arm. So he pretty much offered his arm in order to spare Luffy’s life. You could be right though, I don’t know, this dicussion could be held endlessly lol
@@Lisa-gq7qh Precisely...This was the first chapter...At the very least,Oda intentionally left it ambiguous so he could be in a position to take the story wherever he likes and say "This was part of my machinations from the begining....muahahah".....and we really can't disapprove him either :) It's like the first episode of lost......
Shanks is very infamous in Grandline, so what is the reason for him to come East Blue again? His initial crew-mates are also from East Blue, so did he recruited them and went to grandline and came back? If he wants to go to Grandline after saving Luffy via Red Mountain, they can land on Yasopp's village but they didn't. There are many suspicious points here. Shanks is a teenager at Roger's death, becoming famous for his swordsman skills afterwards, and he came to East blue to form a crew because of some reason(?) and traveled East Blue, meeting Luffy and staying there for an year, we don't know their first meeting, but we can say he stayed because of Luffy or some other reason. After losing his arm, He went back to the Grandline and became an Yonko in next few years. For 12 years after Roger's death, Shanks lay low, and became an Yonko after saving Luffy. We have seen many Awakenings of Conqueror's Haki, but at dire circumstances, even Luffy(he born with it according to Garp), Ace and Doflamingo. Other than Luffy, there are none who can control Conqueror's Haki at that age, that is because of Rayleigh. Shanks might purposefully let the sea king eat his arm but he awakened his Haki and renewed(changed) his ambition, that's why he didn't regret it and is happy. He might have lost his arm and his swordsmanship, but his new power gave him a goal and become a part of new era.
Every Underwater Party: "Hey, did I ever tell you guys about that time I ate Red Hair's arm?" *YES, Lord of the Coast. (;¬_¬)* "I didn't?! So it all started when this little shit was swimming in my waters-"
@7:23 The sea king doesn't have to faint for it to be effective. We've seen it have an effect on people without knocking them out. Examples that come to mind are Fishman Island with Hody Jones and reactions at Marineford. My conjecture is that everybody "feels" the conquerors haki, although there needs to be a large gap in haki level or something to that effect.
21:55 There was a study that shown that if you lose your dominant hand, your brain will compensate and the other hand will become dominant after some time, not a very long time as that.
@@zaylur you know that black beard and his crew defeated Magellan near death offscreen before they go out the impel down right ? .. but in first meeting Magellan low diff them all 😂
I know I'm a little late on this but I think it has something to do with his haki, because if Katakuri has future sight (and I know being the leader of the 3 sweet generals is already crazy powerful enough) what in the world can Shanks do? So I remembered that merfolk in Fishman island that was able to predict the future. What if that is haki? And what if Shanks actually has something like that too and thats why he anticipated and stopped Kaido from going to Marineford? Maybe that's why he is so protective of Luffy
There is an interview and Oda said that he didn't plan on making Shanks lose his arm, but the editor insisted saying it would hook the readership more. That's all there is to it. One another note, Oda also said that Shanks didn't lose any power by losing one arm. That is hard to believe, but also what he said.
Yes, Shanks got the scars in a fight between Rogers crew and WB's crew. He started his own crew later in the east blue. When Shanks leaves Luffy's island(roughly 10 years before Luffy leaves), that is the start of Shanks' adventure.
and before eating the yami yami no mi obviously ! but i think Shanks wasn't a yonkou then; but then again why was shanks talking as if he was always this strong (i mean about him not being careless), why would he think that whitebeard is going to ponder upon the thought of him(shanks) not being careless because whitebeard then was already stronger? so was shanks one of the top tier fighters of the roger pirates ? these questions lead me to think that blackbeard is set to be as shanks's rival ? not luffy's so it is unfinished buisness for shanks ! what do you guys think ?
Oda made Shanks lose an arm to set up for his badassery. I still personally think when he went in to save Luffy, he figured there was no choice but to lose it in the process of saving him.
I mean Luffy went from nothing to “the fifth emperor” in like 2.5 ish years, Shanks was probably not the same OP guy he is now however many years ago the Fusha Village scene was.
22:02 OMG it turns out Oda’s a fan of The Princess Bride and was referencing Man in Black’s duel with Montoya when’re he says "There’s something I ought to tell you... I’m not left handed."
Shanks makes a bet that he is not going to be the one to bring about the new generation that Roger dreamed of. He gives that role to Luffy along with the Straw Hat and gives up his arm as proof. If Shanks intended to be the one to bring about the new era he would need both arms to do it.
Oda didn't plan it.. He made a big deal out of it Katakuri having obervation haki that gives him foresight. But the priests in Skypeia could do the same thing with mantra. The retcon would be that the Moon races can be born with powerful observation haki, which is how Aisa had it. Or it has something to do with the Upper Yard. idk. I think Shanks just got careless, because he was in the weakest sea and too relaxed.. Because Haki requires focus and he just didn't have time to use haki and grab Luffy. OR.. Shanks has extremely powerful conquer's haki, but almost no armament haki.. probably not.
Can you talk about how Luffys final gear form will be a monkey king type transformation. Everyone with the D initial has some similarities between their name and abilities. Red hair, garps grip, dragons supposed control over nature, and gol d roger having his treasure
He genuinely lost it. He had to pull Luffy away from the attacking Seaking and his arm was in the path of its jaw when he swooped in. And that’s, I feel, what he meant when he said that he made a bet. He jumped in to save Luffy, probably knowing something could happen to him. Saving Luffy was the gamble. EDIT: He did use his Conquerers Haki when he stared the Seaking down. I don’t think he had the specifics of Haki fleshed out back then, but it sowed the seeds for its unveiling later on.
In my headcanon Shanks was left-handed, he lets the Sea King eat one of his arms to bet in Luffy, thinking that gonna be his off hand, but the thing eats his left, he keeps his manly face to Luffy and the Sea King , but in his head he is like "GODAMMIT, MY FECKING SWORD ARM, GONNA HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO USE THIS SHIT WITH THE RIGHT NOW FECKING HELL!!"
We've seen Conqueror's Haki function similarly to what Shanks did to that Sea King before btw. There's a scene right before Sabaody where Luffy uses it on an animal, and I *believe* Rayleigh confirmed that intimidation like that is a function of CH right before the timeskip
In my headcanon Shanks was really late to safe Luffy. He wouldn't get there in time. He had 3 choices: stay where he was and let Luffy die, attack the seaking but risk that he might be able to hit it but it still could possibly hurt or kill Luffy with its momentum and the last choice was grabving Luffy and get him out of the way while risking that the seaking hits Shanks. What he meant with the bet was that he took the option that would 100% safe Luffy by risking his own body. But armament Haki really destroyes that theory^^
i think someone with a devil fruit power in shanks crew has a devil fruit that shanks could teleport to luffy when luffy is about to die or in some danger in exchange for shanks hand.
The most important thing you always have to keep in mind when speculating anything about One Piece is that Oda had entire series planned already from the get go. Sure, he didn't have all the details and some stuff he added/expended on as he went, but he came up with general plot and all important parts of the story. So unlike with other long running series, he most likely had a lot stuff in mind already, he just took time to explain it in story. Like with Haki. It was introduced much later, but I have no doubt he already came up with it and knew exactly what it is and how it worked from chapter 1. In fact you forgot to mention, the way Shanks scared off Sea King in the first place was with "death glare". We didn't question it, because it wasn't anything new or unique to mangas. Plenty of people can intimidated their opponents just with 1 look or their presence, but once we learned about Haki, it was clear that is what Shanks used. And that was people's issue as well. If he could intimidated it off so easily, why he didn't do it, before it chopped his arm off. When I first read it, I also thought he just had no time, so he simply lost it when saving Luffy, but considering Oda had entire story planned out already, I think Shanks saying he did it on purpose, was his intention all along. EDIT/ Ok, I wrote it at the beginning of video and when you initially described how it went, you didn't mention it, but you did later. Still my point stands. I think it was Oda setting Haki back then already. Also term "Haki" and how weak Luffy's and Zoro's were was already throw on Jaya by those Doffy's lackeys that tried to pick fight with them at the bar. So Oda definitely had idea about Haki back then.
I think it was early One Piece that the concept of Yonko did not exactly exist yet or anything either. Shanks was likely not meant to be as powerful as he is portrayed now. Remember that Oda intended a five year run for this series, some things needed to be changed or “retconned” to keep the story going.
Shanks had haki back in chapter 1 But i don't think it was as refined as it is now Im specifically talking about his observation haki He literally did not notice the mountain bandit run away So lets say he was running to get luffy see's the sea king and see's luffy drowning And chose to save luffy no hesitation And because his Observation haki was not good (maybe) He did not realize his arm was in the way of the sea king attack and before he could react with armament haki His arm was already gone. I think this explains the scene pretty well Cuz it still says That shanks doesn't care what happens as long as luffy was safe It would still be a wager Cuz in this perspective he saw luffy as non negotiable (Ex."i could defeat the sea king it would take a few seconds but that is all it would take for luffy's lungs to be flooded with water") So shanks saved luffy while the sea king attacked shanks could not feel the sea king and didn't dodge And it would explain a few other things like maybe he could not feel teech's attack Because he had that scar before chapter 1 Like he has beast mode Armament Haki And insane Conquers Haki But average Observation (Maybe below average in chapter 1) If so that would be pretty funny And i think this is the case Because he naturally is a chill guy so why would he be proficient in an ability that basically makes you aware of everything around you He is just chilling Anyways yeah i would totally be okay with this explanation And i guess ill be fine with however oda explains it (who am i to say nah he is the author) Maybe it was on purpose maybe it wasn't.

Oda forced Shanks to lose an arm so it would be even more badass when he stopped Kaido, clashed with Whitebeard, and stopped the war, with only 1 arm.
Agreeable
not like he needs another arm when he has 1 sword though. anyone with a sword or weapon imbues their haki into the weapon. hawkeye saying he has no interest dueling shanks after he lost an arm is simply because you dont want to loose twice, 2nd time being handicapped.

Oda still regrets Shanks losing his arm (according to magazine interview). The editorial department wanted the scene to be more dramatic so he lost his arm.
Poor Oda...well it kinda works for dramatic purposes...but That time Oda had no idea the he would reach a point that he could do what he wanted.

Pretty sure it was forced by Oda’s editors
@Ron Jones Even if he thought it would only last x amount of time he could still have plans lasting beyond that.
I always thought the reason of a made shanks lose his arm was to show how much shanks cared for Luffy enough to lose his arm for him
That also that's y he say he bet on him.. coz he speak like gold roger and even he told reyleh about it
Welp... there’s no fooling you😂
Since we don't know which elements of Haki, sword slices were in his mind already, one can argue this question for hours. You can interpret Shank's laughing at the bandit in the bar motionless in 3 ways:
1. He found himself to be way superior since facing a random bandit as an over-average pirate/ even Yonko
2. Considering Shanks' values, he laughed at the bandit's actions
and most probable 3.
Lol shanks has the lowest bounty of all the OG yonko. This didn't age well

TheEphemeralEternity shanks faught with mihawk when he still had both arms he was definitely strong enough to take the sea king out
yeah...basically what the above comments stated...i mean luffy at the start of his journey managed to ohko that thing....I'm pretty sure the guy who fought equally with mihawk can do the same....
But that conversation with whitebeard tho... Whitebeard said that almost everyone in the one piece world was shocked when SHANKS came back form the east with one arm...
He wanted to have moment with Ben Beckman like A did with arui in Naruto; "I might have lost my arm but you are my right hand man"
it's made a little fuzzy by Shanks losing his left arm but it was his dominant so, maybe

What if its both. He just wanted to save a kid and it cost his arm. Instead of admitting that he lost something, he JUSTIFIED his decision, to sound badass. Saving ANY CHILD is betting on the future, so its not even a lie.
We are, we are on a cruise , WE ARE! :-)
Shanks actually IS lefty. Look at his scabbard placement in the flashbacks. He gave up his dominant arm and is still top 5

Shanks sacrificing his arm for luffy made a compromise to luffy. He can't afford losing against anyone because he owes his life to shanks. Luffy suffered that shanks had to sacrifies his arm because of him being weak
Oda made Shanks loose his arm to make the story more interesting LMAOOOO
Perhaps Roger gave Shanks the hat right before heading up to the gallows or turning himself in and told him “hey, lead this new era I’m about to start” (obviously not those exact words)
Tekking I request a futuristic six samurai from yugioh
i like the theory that shanks was more concerned with protecting luffy that he didn't care what happened to him. hence him claiming it was a wager. he didn't lose an arm on purpose but expected to be hurt. also haki doesn't work right when the user is distracted.
Though one things for certain....this just adds to the enigma that is....Red-haired Shanks!!
you're an idiot.
@@Lisa-gq7qh Precisely...This was the first chapter...At the very least,Oda intentionally left it ambiguous so he could be in a position to take the story wherever he likes and say "This was part of my machinations from the begining....muahahah".....and we really can't disapprove him either :)
It's like the first episode of lost......
Dark Knight Haha yes, probably!
when shank's arc comes up its literally just gonna be "we have to travel to the most dangerous yonko territory of them all: Florida"

Every Underwater Party:
"Hey, did I ever tell you guys about that time I ate Red Hair's arm?"
*YES, Lord of the Coast. (;¬_¬)*
"I didn't?! So it all started when this little shit was swimming in my waters-"
@7:23 The sea king doesn't have to faint for it to be effective. We've seen it have an effect on people without knocking them out. Examples that come to mind are Fishman Island with Hody Jones and reactions at Marineford. My conjecture is that everybody "feels" the conquerors haki, although there needs to be a large gap in haki level or something to that effect.
actually Shanks was left handed....
Kid Luffy: I'll find the One Piece and become King of the Pirates!
Shanks: BET.
It was intentional because Luffy knocked it out in chapter 1. He was nowhere near as strong as Shanks when he lost his arm.
yep same thought.
Exactly!
But keep in mind, Shanks was unarmed, and was far more concerned about Luffy drowning and getting eaten than attacking the Seaking
21:55 There was a study that shown that if you lose your dominant hand, your brain will compensate and the other hand will become dominant after some time, not a very long time as that.

Is there no interview with Oda where somebody has asked him about this?
There is an interview and Oda said that he didn't plan on making Shanks lose his arm, but the editor insisted saying it would hook the readership more. That's all there is to it.
One another note, Oda also said that Shanks didn't lose any power by losing one arm. That is hard to believe, but also what he said.
@@Hoodspirit gotcha, bless your soul

Wait a minute, Shanks got the scars from battling Blackbeard before he met Luffy and before losing his left arm?
TheGreatOtaku yep
@Adam DoesThings No in the anime it stated that he wasn't using dirty tricks and Shanks wasn't underestimating him, he was being cautious
Your the best man. Can't wait till you hit the 1mio.
No Tekking tumble?
22:02 OMG it turns out Oda’s a fan of The Princess Bride and was referencing Man in Black’s duel with Montoya when’re he says "There’s something I ought to tell you... I’m not left handed."
totally accident. That sea king hatched from the egg on rogers ship.
I don't think in Shanks having no armament haki and fighting Whitebeard and Kaido
Shanks armament haki is strong asf. He blocked whitebeards attack. His sword would've shattered without strong AS FUCK haki.
Can you talk about how Luffys final gear form will be a monkey king type transformation. Everyone with the D initial has some similarities between their name and abilities. Red hair, garps grip, dragons supposed control over nature, and gol d roger having his treasure
illumiRONi Blackbeard has the darkness fruit and the tremor fruit (whiteBEARD)
Its a plothole and that is it. Oda simply did noth tought about Haki yet and this is why the Seaking was able to eat his arm.

Boom. Answered the question with a question. You're welcome.

@@amaesthestoryteller1365 But he drunkenly fights seakings or opponents that are as strong
@Jason Collins We don't know what happened to his eye so any assertions about it are complete head cannon
Change LEFT to RIGHT.
Never mind. It got edited already.

Luv that Videos thank you for keep making them Tekking
0:17 that flick was too clean
i think someone with a devil fruit power in shanks crew has a devil fruit that shanks could teleport to luffy when luffy is about to die or in some danger in exchange for shanks hand.
Shanks´s perception hakai is so strong that he saw the future in which luffy brought down the world government. So I would say it was intentional :)
Remember that Oda intended a five year run for this series, some things needed to be changed or “retconned” to keep the story going.
shanks was in the pub while luffy was in the middle of the ocean, the fact that he rescued luffy in time shows how beast he is
thats a really cool channel emoji there lord tekking...very cool :)
Shanks had haki back in chapter 1
But i don't think it was as refined as it is now
Im specifically talking about his observation haki
He literally did not notice the mountain bandit run away
So lets say he was running to get luffy
see's the sea king and see's luffy drowning
And chose to save luffy no hesitation
And because his Observation haki was not good (maybe)
He did not realize his arm was in the way of the sea king attack and before he could react with armament haki
His arm was already gone.
I think this explains the scene pretty well
Cuz it still says
That shanks doesn't care what happens as long as luffy was safe
It would still be a wager
Cuz in this perspective he saw luffy as non negotiable
(Ex."i could defeat the sea king it would take a few seconds but that is all it would take for luffy's lungs to be flooded with water")
So shanks saved luffy while the sea king attacked shanks could not feel the sea king and didn't dodge
And it would explain a few other things like maybe he could not feel teech's attack
Because he had that scar before chapter 1
Like he has beast mode Armament Haki
And insane Conquers Haki
But average Observation
(Maybe below average in chapter 1)
If so that would be pretty funny
And i think this is the case
Because he naturally is a chill guy so why would he be proficient in an ability that basically makes you aware of everything around you
He is just chilling
Anyways yeah i would totally be okay with this explanation
And i guess ill be fine with however oda explains it (who am i to say nah he is the author)
Maybe it was on purpose maybe it wasn't.
