First of all: in the original Chinese dubbing the part where he says that he wants to keep her in a world where is just the two of them is referred more to how he wanted to return to their childhood, there are some nuances of the language that get lost in translation. Also he didn't go to play but he was fighting against bullies... And I wouldn't count what he did to the MC as being toxic since basically he was a kid. Kids do a lot of stupid things, and add to that that he's a traumatized child and same goes for the MC (I get to why around the end of the post). Meanwhile doing that as an adult it's definitely questionable. [Main story and myth spoilers ahead] It's true that MC can also do things by herself but in Skyhaven it was clearly shown how she wasn't able to protect herself in those circumstances: she was literally about to be eaten by a girl, and she was also injured. So yeah, sure he should communicate more with the MC and everything, absolutely instead of locking her up... But I can understand about how he wanted to protect her since he knew she wouldn't have been able to fight against those people. You wouldn't send someone you love directly to sure death, no? Also another thing to keep in mind: both in the main story and in the myth it was shown how not only those failed human experiments could hurt her but also Ever was around and is searching for her, I think they don't know who's MC but she's probably the "missing child" they're talking about in the last chapter, so Caleb is probably also hiding her identity to them and instead he wants to be their lab rat so they would leave her alone... So that's probably another reason why he didn't want her around. He also said that if it meant that he could keep her out of all this he would have even disappeared, but she was the one who came at the wrong moment in Skyhaven so that's how she ended up involved either way. Another thing to keep in mind: in the main story, differently from the bond, he has a chip in his body that's also affecting his behavior... He was always overprotective and obsessive but the chip takes it to the extreme. So that's another reason why he didn't keep his promise to not lock her again. The chip is messing with his feelings and brain. Another important point: in their dynamic he's not the only one who's overprotective and obsessive but the MC is too. In the myth she wanted to be locked far away together with him somewhere, where it would be only the two of them and no one could find them, after he had an amnesia bc of the chip she lied to him and didn't told him all about his job bc she didn't want him to return there but she wanted to spend a day together like they did in their childhood... She also said how she wanted to put a collar on him so he wouldn't escape 😭 also in the myth she impulsively puts a chip on herself... So tbh seeing how she acts without thinking I can see why he wanted to keep her out of the whole situation lol [World Underneath spoilers below] So... I think their relationship isn't exactly good or healthy. But it makes sense to me because both of them are traumatized because they were both experimented on and she was killed again and again and he probably couldn't do nothing but just watch, add to that that he went through two accidents (the accident at the DAA where he started having dissociative amnesia and nightmares and the explosion in Bloom shore District where he lost one arm and he says he has "died"), the chip that's controlling his mind... Who wouldn't lose their minds? They're both broken inside in one way or another and the fact they went through such a traumatic event such as being experimented on as children add to their overprotective and obsessive behavior towards each other. In short: they all need therapy lol In this game tbh almost all the LIS have some toxic behavior at some point, but some are just more straightforward about it while some keep their bad actions hidden. Luckily for us this is fiction and if you're able to distinguish between fiction and reality you usually would understand when certain actions are okay and when they're not. The fun thing about it is exactly that you can explore and enjoy certain things and situations that maybe you wouldn't ever want to live in first person irl.
