@@kc0itfProbably not a hoax given all the review the proof got. But, yes, it's nothing like whatever proof Fermat had in mind. It's still tempting to think there's a simple proof waiting to be published.
Craps is pretty simple. The person rolling the dice is the Shooter. There are two primary bets - Pass and Don't Pass. Pass is betting the shooter will win, Don't Pass is betting the shooter will lose. On the first roll, if the shooter gets 7 or 11, they lose. If the shooter gets 2, 3, or 12, they lose. Any other number is now the Point. The shooter is now trying to roll the point again without rolling a 7. If the shooter rolls the point, they win. If the shooter rolls a 7 first, they lose. If they roll anything else, they roll again until they roll either the point or a 7. There are a bunch of other bets where you're betting on the shooter rolling a specific number, but even I never messed with most of that when I was playing craps pretty frequently. The Pass and Don't Pass are the only ones you really need to worry about (besides, most of the other bets than those are a sucker's bet - the payout odds are less than the odds against you). The reason craps is so popular is because it's a cooperative game - Most people bet on Pass because it's more fun to be on the same side as the shooter. There's breaks of a couple of minutes between each roll to let people place bets and it builds tension. The tension is resolved quickly by rolling the dice. And everybody at the table typically wins or loses together. Also, the craps table has one fo the lowest house advantage ratios - I think it's around 1.4? That's very low - the house advantage on slot machines is around 10-20% (depending on the state due to gaming regulations) while roulette is just over 5% (for a standard wheel, the European wheels with only one 0 and no 00, it's closer to 3% I think?) It makes playing craps one of the best bets in the casino second only to blackjack. So craps is a high-energy game with a house edge that means it'll take longer statistically for you to lose your money and the rules are pretty simple to understand (if my explanation above didn't make sense, it will the first time you see it played). You also get to actually touch stuff, which is rare in a casino (you don't even get to touch the cards in blackjack in most casinos these days). Just know that, with every casino game, the house always has the advantage. I used to have fun gambling once or twice a month or so, spending $100-200 per trip just for fun (and sucking up free drinks)...but when I got a job working accounting in the casino, I never went onto a casino floor to gamble ever again. You see those numbers on a spreadsheet, you want nothing to do with trying to win anymore. Give me a nice game of Catan instead.
"Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes", one of the funnest and funniest climaxes in the franchise. Data the man with no feelings, started feeling himself. Sometimes it's good to be an android.
Just imagine what this episode would be like if instead of a cheesy novel about a casino, the astronaut was reading the Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft!

Right.. not an important episode, not a significant episode, but for me a very fun episode. The reference to Fermat’s Theorem (which by now HAS been solved!) is cool, and just seeing Data snapping the dice at the craps table… hilarious.
Yes, a proof of the Fermat theorem was published. But it used outrageously complicated and modern mathematics, stuff Fermat wouldn't have known about. His claim that he could prove the theorem is still intriguing.
@@kevinlewallen4778 Agreed! The mystery still persists regarding the possibility of Fermat’s proof - was he deluded or did he really have something? Because he for certain did not have the current solution.
Def one of my favorite early episodes. Feels very much like the eps of TOS that placed the crew in a contemporary setting. And at times it feels like a classic Twilight Zone story. I also enjoyed it back in the day 'cause I knew some old timers like "Texas" whom drove big Cadillac cars and wore bolo ties and cowboy hats. 🤣
It was always fun when they let Brent Spiner play around a bit. Fermat's Last Theorem that the talk of in the episode was actually solved in 1995, six years after the episode aired.
I seem to recall seeing a documentary about it. The guy proved it using very modern mathematical techniques and theorems that weren't around at Fermat's time. The challenge of proving it as Fermat did/could have done is still up for grabs AFAIK.
I COMPLETELY forgot about this episode, yet only 2 minutes in, I COMPLETELY remember it. I LOVED this one! It left such a strong good memory of adventure and mystery in my mind! Thank you Commander Jen for rebooting my systems! 🖖

This has a connection to another Roddenberry project, a failed TV Pilot called The Questor Tapes, which followed a human looking android in 1970s earth. The scene where Data's at the craps table and notes that the dice are loaded before correcting them is taken directly from a Questor Tapes script.
12:01 The way I'VE always interpreted this scene is, due to the interference, I don't think they are listening to what's going down on the planet...especially because Riker, Data, nor Worf are anywhere near Mickey D. After ToS, Gene Roddenberry tried to sell three other shows to the network. Pilots were made, but none of them made it to series. They were: the post-apocalyptic "Genesis 2" (which also had a second pilot, "Planet Earth"), "Spectre" (about a supernatural investigator), and "The Questor Tapes" (about an android seeking his missing creator). The scene with Data and the loaded dice was recycled from a similar scene in "The Questor Tapes." (Side note: Majel Barrett had roles in each of those pilots.)

0:54 Yes, Jen, you should be drinking “Tea; Earl Grey, Hot!” every time you watch. Sales of Earl Grey saw a big boost in North America as a direct result of this show.
I don’t know why, but this episode hits something inside of me. When I watched it i felt weirdly connected to the person the world was created for. Back when this originally aired I remember having very vivid dreams after watching it, dreams about his life before the enterprise crew found him, except I was him. It was all very bizarre.
Incidentally, in our timeline, Fermat's theorem was finally proven in the nineties. This result directly lead to the proof of a more general modularity theorem for elliptic curves over the rational numbers, connecting complex analysis with number theory in an important way and thus enabling new ways of reasoning about other mathematical problems in these fields. Work on further generalizations is ongoing.
My favourite part of this episode is Picard struggling to remain interested in the going ons of the novel. Considering he's very much the high brow type, being forced to sit through low brow pulp trash like this is hilarious 😂 Especially his reaction to the intro of the book, and Troi's lame attempt at keeping his hopes up.
1:30 Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'll never get tired of Jen and her Serious Girl Spectacles rocking out to one of the greatest TV Themes of all-time.🤘
It may be an entrance, but considering you are in a protected space in a planet that would otherwise be instantly lethal, you should consider that the door may be an exit.
Earl Grey is the TEA. It became the signature drink for Picard and the catchphrase "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" took on a life of its own. I have an LCARS themed tea box filled with, what else - Early Grey Teabags with a LCARS mug that has the signature phrase. I like it, but it took me a bit to acquire the taste. But having the mug with the tea should be a staple of your TNG viewing like the bow tie you put on and the champagne flute you have. The phrase apparently isn't in a LOT of episodes (now that I look it up) but its repeated often enough that it became a catchphrase for Picard. At least in many episodes you get Earl Grey at the very least. I always like to think its a sign of Picard's refinement. It's first uttered in Contagion.
The best line in this episode was delivered by Data after being given an order to win a wheelbarrow full of money: "Baby needs a new pair of shoes." Then Data proceeds to get into the various winning gestures and traits seen while gambling.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'll never get tired of Jen and her Serious Girl Spectacles rocking out to one of the greatest TV Themes of all-time.🤘
My current go to tea is David’s Organic Breakfast Blend…an excellent black tea…..loose leaf, of course
Baby needs a new pair of shoes! 😂😂😂😂
It may be an entrance, but considering you are in a protected space in a planet that would otherwise be instantly lethal, you should consider that the door may be an exit.
Thanks jen
This is a fun guilty pleasure of an episode. Season 2 is full of silly but character building episodes.
The best line in this episode was delivered by Data after being given an order to win a wheelbarrow full of money: "Baby needs a new pair of shoes."
Then Data proceeds to get into the various winning gestures and traits seen while gambling.
This was my first-ever episode of Star Trek. It’s not an all-timer, but middle school-me was enraptured!
I forgot about this episode: they found their own Hotel California!
Thanks!
Thanks david! Really appreciate it :)
The astronaut wished to end it. This would be my dream existence
You are on the verge of Star Trek Greatness. I cant wait!!! 2-16
Next week 13 and 14 but the following week there's an episode setting up so many star trek plots for decades to come.
This is probably my favorite episode ever. it's just fun and silly.
Looking forward to the "Q Who" reaction. That was a good one.
That episode is my favorite!
