I remember everything from Beavis and Butt-Head to Liquid Television to Aeon Flux to The Brothers Grunt vividly and proudly. Even when MTV would air re-runs of Nickeldeon's Ren and Stimpy, my other favorite show. It was truly an era that shaped a lot of my perception of how COOL cartoons could be. I grew up watching cartoons as soon as I was 2. Everything from classic Looney Tunes to the glut of quickly produced Hanna Barbera and to this day I still watch anything be it Anime, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Infinity Train, almost anything that's on.
But in my teenage and high school years was when I was watching B&B, Ren and Stimpy, Aeon Flux, and The Maxx and those shows did so much for opening and expanding my mind to everything that animation as a televised artform could do. This show especially had a profound effect on me. I have to admit this is where I first saw the Maxx but when I saw it, I instantly went out and bought AS MANY of the comics as I could GET.

I fell in love with The Maxx and did so again when I finally found the comics a couple years later. I think the failure of few of the big mainstream attempts like Heavy Metal (im talking PURELY box office not quality) didn't make enough. I think (imo) the late 90s was that kinda 2nd attempt to say: OK...we KNOW there a Adult/Young Adult Animation Market...and it's HUNGRY...but HOW DO WE FIND THEM/REACH THEM? Lets play around and seew hat hits.
But then as a FEW One off BIG Projects failed Heavy Metal again usually being the "go to" to point towards: slowly as we entered the Eternal Pop Era in music (around 2001-2003 ish until today and maybe forever) Animation...kinda followed culture:
And stopped the late 90s era experimentation...to pander AND FOR DOLLARS SO 'good reason" lol: to more MAINSTREAM audiences...
And like Music and Gaming: once Animation went Mainstream Again outside its Golden Era: *It devolved...and slowly over a generation: is over saturated to all hell. Now is EACH sector are there STILL Gems in the rough: ABSOLUTELY!* BUT my POINT is:
the looser: "Experimental Era" of the mid to late 90s...sadly...is what IM nostalgic for...
Not straight remakes...of paint by numbers...kids shows.

Plus good voice work with almost Noire Era Monologue's often? Was a good choice with the art style as it gives it...idk...to repeat myself:
A Experimental, kinda Noire, kinda parody, kinda psychological subversion...great job. 10/10? Idk: but as a 9/10? Yeah: imo due to me LIKING art styles and when their used to TRULY create atmosphere WITH the Themes? 9/10.

Gil Starberry/Barry Stigler been cast as Mr Gone was a great touch. i still owe the VHS of this, which led to me getting the comics. i never found out how the story concluded til i got the graphic novels later in life. truly a visual treat for the eyes and highly animated.

I enjoyed this show as a kid, and still do to this day. Over the years I've compared it's ideas of realities and entangling constructs to The Matrix (minus the cyberpunk), and an anime series titled Serial Experiments Lain. Compelling storytelling indeed.

I'm noticing a lot of interest in The Maxx lately, and also in Sam Keith's work. Here's hoping both get the recognition they deserve. We need more of this creativity on television and comics. Marvel and DC have gotten so PC it's unbearable.

It is strange how American network television has only produced a single non-comedic prime time animated show: Amblin’s INVASION AMERICA

I discovered this by myself in the 90s on SBS in Australia. I was about 13. I felt like I was the only person in the whole world watching it. I mastered drawing him so I could put him on my school books. Makes me super happy now to see it meant a lot to others out there too, all that long time ago.

I saw The Maxx at night when I was 12 years old. It changed my brain. I was not the same person again after seeing it, and I'm thankful to Sam Keith for his creation. I eventually got my hands on the comics, and I still have them.

I read some of this comic; but was really blown away by this show. Several years later my roommate had a copy on VHS we watched way too much. I couldn't get him into artsy anime like Paprika... not enough mushrooms.

I enjoyed both the comics and the animated series as separate yet the same. The comic had more detail but the story was there in the series. I still remember watching this in college and I miss it. I'll need to track it down

Ahhh yeas. The good old times. When MTV still showed musik videos and we could watch anime and other weird cartoons. Today it's just adults who refuses to admit that they are adults and fight each other over things like who puked more on the carpet.

Noticed something weird but at the 1:30 mark when they're talking about the cassette tape it shows an address of 2008 Oxford Street Austin TX 77008. That address is actually located in Houston. Not Austin. I actually live right around the corner from that address.

Worth noting is how the series dealt with adapting the storylines of the crossover issues of the comic while not having the rights to include the crossover characters. The Pitt was just replaced with a character from the Maxx story in Darker Image, but for the Savage Dragon and his villain Mako, the characters were replaced by generic stand-ins.

It was basically an American OVA with an anime original ending. A second season that does the rest of the story till the time and sharp jump of the comic would have been nice but oh well.
A shame that the HBO cartoon about Spawn never finished. It proved that the IP has more to offer than the oh so 90s comics.

Wrong about the audiocassette version. That was made by an Austin company and they felt quite ripped off when the animated show appeared since it was obviously inspired by their work. (At this point I can't remember if I actually discussed this with them or merely read about it...)
Apart from that I can't count the number of great elements in your video analysis!

Man, I remember seeing this as a kid and not understanding a thing. Looking at it now it strikes me how well it is actually animated. Gorgeous, fluid animations combined with mixed media. Quite beautiful actually. Unfortunately I've never been a huge fan of the design of The Maxx. Might want to give it a go again, though...
