When I was a little kid I was living in Nipomo California. I would frequent a McDonald's there with my mom that had all this amazing comic book art framed and hung on the walls. I remember art of Wolverine fighting what looked like a symbiote coming out of the ground and art of the Maxx. I didn't see the Maxx again for years until I was in middleschool and went to a comic book store on Utah. There was the Maxx sitting on a shelf but feeling uncomfortable by the elitists that ran the shop and only saw me as a kid and being more interested in Batman and Deadpool I ignored even looking at the book. I'm 22 now and I haven't seen the Maxx again (despite going to many many comic shops ) until you made your video on the comic series. Thank you for educating me on this character that has been a mystery most of my life.
This was one of the best comic adaptations of all time IMO. I can't think of any other comic book adaptations that did such a good job of capturing everything that made the comic so compelling.
This show was so amazing. I wish wish it was on Blu ray. Sam Keith's The Maxx comic run is one of the greatest of all time. Thank you for shining light on this lost gem.
This came out when I was transitioning from childhood into my teenage years. I was already an avid Image fanboy, so i remember making a point to record each episode on my vcr as it premiered. i LOVED this show. when the final episode dropped, i openly wept when Maxx and Julie talked about her leaving. That shot where it said "please don't leave" (or something similar) all over the background - it BROKE me. i was already full of fucked up emotions from being at that age, so Maxx's feelings of desperation really hit me. Either way, GREAT show.
I need to watch this show again. I was in middle school when I watched this, and so much of it went over my head at the time. I just watched it because it was weird, and it looked cool.
The Maxx comic and TV series were amazing. Well done, very intellectual, and very entertaining. It's a shame there was only one season of The Maxx. It's an even bigger shame The Maxx is not as popular today as it was when it first came out in the 90's.
I remember watching this show when it aired, as I was very young at the time I subconsciously wanted to watch the show because I felt an attraction to the Maxx as he was a big powerfully built muscle man 🤣
Excellent breakdown! I've long remembered the Maxx but, I would have NEVER gotten it's deeper meaning back when I was a kid. I just knew it was bizarre.
Might be the right video to point out that on the DVD I have a large portion of one of the original episodes is missing (dealing with a stalled car, a pipe, phone cords, and Tiger shark) I'm not sure why and I've never seen it explained
I remember a music video where Pink Floyd was the music (I don't remember what song.) and the Maxx was the video. The footage for the video was likely taken from the Maxx cartoon. (I have no idea which episode(s) it would have been.) And it was likely completely fan-made. This was a good 20+ years ago and while I may still have it, somewhere, buried on an old CD(-ROM), I was really hoping that some could at least remember this thing... I've scoured the internet looking for it and I haven't found anything. Thanx!
One of my favorite animated series and comics of all time spawns is up there ironically too image was realy ahead of it's time but so 90s feeling at the same time weirdly
Gil Starberry/Barry Stigler been cast as Mr Gone was a great touch. i still owe the VHS of this, which led to me getting the comics. i never found out how the story concluded til i got the graphic novels later in life. truly a visual treat for the eyes and highly animated.
I enjoyed this show as a kid, and still do to this day. Over the years I've compared it's ideas of realities and entangling constructs to The Matrix (minus the cyberpunk), and an anime series titled Serial Experiments Lain. Compelling storytelling indeed.
I'm noticing a lot of interest in The Maxx lately, and also in Sam Keith's work. Here's hoping both get the recognition they deserve. We need more of this creativity on television and comics. Marvel and DC have gotten so PC it's unbearable.
I discovered this by myself in the 90s on SBS in Australia. I was about 13. I felt like I was the only person in the whole world watching it. I mastered drawing him so I could put him on my school books. Makes me super happy now to see it meant a lot to others out there too, all that long time ago.
I remember watching the MAXX as a kid. None of the plot lines or deeper meaning even crossed my mind. I just loved the show for its entertainment value oh and Julie was hot...
I saw The Maxx at night when I was 12 years old. It changed my brain. I was not the same person again after seeing it, and I'm thankful to Sam Keith for his creation. I eventually got my hands on the comics, and I still have them.
I read some of this comic; but was really blown away by this show. Several years later my roommate had a copy on VHS we watched way too much. I couldn't get him into artsy anime like Paprika... not enough mushrooms.
This adaptation was so good it's put me on a hunt for the comic. I've only obtained issue 1 and Volume 2 of the trade in paperback which was obtained by accident unfortunately.
I enjoyed both the comics and the animated series as separate yet the same. The comic had more detail but the story was there in the series. I still remember watching this in college and I miss it. I'll need to track it down
Ahhh yeas. The good old times. When MTV still showed musik videos and we could watch anime and other weird cartoons. Today it's just adults who refuses to admit that they are adults and fight each other over things like who puked more on the carpet.
Noticed something weird but at the 1:30 mark when they're talking about the cassette tape it shows an address of 2008 Oxford Street Austin TX 77008. That address is actually located in Houston. Not Austin. I actually live right around the corner from that address.
Worth noting is how the series dealt with adapting the storylines of the crossover issues of the comic while not having the rights to include the crossover characters. The Pitt was just replaced with a character from the Maxx story in Darker Image, but for the Savage Dragon and his villain Mako, the characters were replaced by generic stand-ins.
It was basically an American OVA with an anime original ending. A second season that does the rest of the story till the time and sharp jump of the comic would have been nice but oh well. A shame that the HBO cartoon about Spawn never finished. It proved that the IP has more to offer than the oh so 90s comics.
Why arnt any RUclips videos showing the upload date on any ones uploads??? It will show it in the thumbnails but not on the vidoes themselves. I noticed this a few weeks back.
Wrong about the audiocassette version. That was made by an Austin company and they felt quite ripped off when the animated show appeared since it was obviously inspired by their work. (At this point I can't remember if I actually discussed this with them or merely read about it...) Apart from that I can't count the number of great elements in your video analysis!
Man, I remember seeing this as a kid and not understanding a thing. Looking at it now it strikes me how well it is actually animated. Gorgeous, fluid animations combined with mixed media. Quite beautiful actually. Unfortunately I've never been a huge fan of the design of The Maxx. Might want to give it a go again, though...
Lot of Maxx going around right now. I've seen other people make videos about him last few weeks, I've gotten some commissions to draw him. I actually rewatched this show last night to get more into the Maxx head space to draw him.

There’s a sticker on Instagram when that you can put on a story of the max and the eyes in the sky. Made me happy.
Oddities and Liquid Television was amazing, I use to watch them both all the time.
I need to watch this show again. I was in middle school when I watched this, and so much of it went over my head at the time. I just watched it because it was weird, and it looked cool.
Same. I’m still trying to figure it out!
The Maxx comic and TV series were amazing. Well done, very intellectual, and very entertaining. It's a shame there was only one season of The Maxx. It's an even bigger shame The Maxx is not as popular today as it was when it first came out in the 90's.
I'm a simple kid that grew up watching Liquid Television. I see The Maxx, I click.
Same 💜
I remember watching this show when it aired, as I was very young at the time I subconsciously wanted to watch the show because I felt an attraction to the Maxx as he was a big powerfully built muscle man 🤣
I grew up watching this right before i entered highschool really helped my teenage angst
MTV just doesn’t mean anything without the great animated slate that Abby Terkule spearheaded
Loved this show!!!
Wonderful coverage! Thank you for doing this
I remember.. classic and inventive, paved the way for adult swim and others
Excellent breakdown! I've long remembered the Maxx but, I would have NEVER gotten it's deeper meaning back when I was a kid. I just knew it was bizarre.
I loved this show!
Might be the right video to point out that on the DVD I have a large portion of one of the original episodes is missing (dealing with a stalled car, a pipe, phone cords, and Tiger shark) I'm not sure why and I've never seen it explained
Great series and a great retrospective on it. Thanks SBP!
Reminds me of The Amazing Screw-On Head in terms of comic-accurate visuals.
Thank you for your contribution.
I didn't know there was a cassette! Now I do and just bought one. Thanks!
Thanx!
that cartoon is god damn gold
One of my favorite animated series and comics of all time spawns is up there ironically too image was realy ahead of it's time but so 90s feeling at the same time weirdly
Gil Starberry/Barry Stigler been cast as Mr Gone was a great touch. i still owe the VHS of this, which led to me getting the comics. i never found out how the story concluded til i got the graphic novels later in life. truly a visual treat for the eyes and highly animated.
It's still a great read! Thanks for sharing, cheers!
It is strange how American network television has only produced a single non-comedic prime time animated show: Amblin’s INVASION AMERICA
I discovered this by myself in the 90s on SBS in Australia. I was about 13. I felt like I was the only person in the whole world watching it. I mastered drawing him so I could put him on my school books. Makes me super happy now to see it meant a lot to others out there too, all that long time ago.
"I wish I was drunk, at least that would explain this!"
The Maxx was legit, so was The Head
This adaptation was so good it's put me on a hunt for the comic. I've only obtained issue 1 and Volume 2 of the trade in paperback which was obtained by accident unfortunately.
So great and yet underrated, beautiful as a cult series. I prefer it that way
I enjoyed both the comics and the animated series as separate yet the same. The comic had more detail but the story was there in the series. I still remember watching this in college and I miss it. I'll need to track it down
Have you looked into the history of Marvel's Death's Head? It's an interesting journey to say the least.
Love The Maxx. I have the complete run and the action figure. The cartoon was very good, way ahead of the times.
Ahhh yeas. The good old times. When MTV still showed musik videos and we could watch anime and other weird cartoons. Today it's just adults who refuses to admit that they are adults and fight each other over things like who puked more on the carpet.
The Maxx blew my mind to what comic books could be both with art and story
FAX, I was like this seems like an evangelion type plot but it’s western
weird question but whats the auido you used int the opening from? (>_
I loved both Pitt and Maxx. Such cool characters that I want to still be around today.
It's a shame this never made it as a movies This is probably one of the best cartoons I've ever watched It was highly addicted to watching it
I remember always catching just random episodes of The Maxx and never quite understanding wtf was going on. I'd love to rewatch The Head though.
Nice job my friend NUFF SAID
where can i watch the full episodes pls, it looks so good
The Maxx will always stand still in time and never get outdated
I had no idea what I was even watching as an 11 year old. Once I got older and came back to the Maxx, I finally realized what the story was about.
(At this point I can't remember if I actually discussed this with them or merely read about it...)
Apart from that I can't count the number of great elements in your video analysis!
Man, I remember seeing this as a kid and not understanding a thing. Looking at it now it strikes me how well it is actually animated. Gorgeous, fluid animations combined with mixed media. Quite beautiful actually. Unfortunately I've never been a huge fan of the design of The Maxx. Might want to give it a go again, though...
caught myself saying this channel is so fucking good aloud
Lot of Maxx going around right now. I've seen other people make videos about him last few weeks, I've gotten some commissions to draw him. I actually rewatched this show last night to get more into the Maxx head space to draw him.
Crazy I saw this back in 1999 I now have the comics as well.
After you finish talking about the animation, this just feels like a recap of the video on the comic
