Your Gran was a tower of strength. She used to pay me to come down to her brownstone and do cleaning as a way to help me pay my room and board while I was a student at Manhattan School of Music in the 70’s. While cleaning one day, I got to meet and sing for Baritone Willian Warfield. An hours worth of coaching from him justified my leaving Howard University after only two years without a degree, which came later in 74. What a great memory.
Too bad we do not have more recordings of Ms Allen. I met her at the rehearsals in San Juan for the Casals Festival. She was an exquisite artist, great voice, very approachable lady, great sense of humor and down to earth.
I used to see her parents waiting for the bus in Plainfield, New Jersey. They were lovely people, and very proud of her! As I recall, they told me she was adopted. Does anyone else know?
When I was a student at Manhattan School of Music in the 70’s, Ms Allen was a beacon of encouragement during my voice juries. I could tell from her expressions whether I’d sung a phrase well, or “ boy you could have sung that better”.....but she always radiated love and encouragement......RIP up there at Valhalla Ms Allen..
I have only seen Ms Allen once, on the jury in a Queen Sonja competition several years ago, but I gather she was much loved here in Oslo for her recitals in the 1950s. I love her recording of Rossini's Stabat Mater.
Such a beautiful soul and terrific musician and singer ❣️🎶🥰
I love this ... i miss my grandmother
