I filmed this back in early December. 3054 starts out crossing the CSX/Wabash diamond in Defiance Ohio and makes the slow trip to Cecil to pick up a string of boxcars. I would have filmed the return trip but I had to go to work!

This line is being improved finally after over 50 years of deferred maintenece.
Okay, now it's 2021. Are things much better? I can't imagine a locomotive could have stayed on those tracks in '14.
There are abandon railroad tracks that are in better shape than that one.
Because abandon rails don’t have any weight ridden over them. But still they could at least maintain it every few years so trains can keep going down it at decent speeds.
the train version of walking in heels through sand or gravel...
That engine crew had to be shitting bricks the whole time.
lmao
That's one he'll of a brave train operator.
I'd try it but only if I had a crash helmet on
LOL Look at that track
crooked as the US Government
lottsalasagna crooked as Hillary.
and trump is a beacon of honesty? :D
You sir made my day with this comment!
+Nodak81 I like how Trump said he would "drain the swamp" but has plans to fill his cabinet with the same lobbyist clowns that have been running the show in Washington for years. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
You voted for corrupt politicians and you blame them for it? It's not them, it's you. The government is the reflection of it's citizens: bully, corrupt, selfish. I don't blame the government for this. I blame retarded citizens.
Is that the new roller coaster track at Disneyland? Nice! ;-)
xD
I can't believe that they are allowed on that track.
I wouldn't operate more than 5 mph over that sphagetti
our spachetti sono the best! mangiate our spaghetti
Neyther italiani
i wouldn't operate on that at all
777 pop where's my damn meatballs
speedyme200 I'm a workin on a my turkey. you uh gonna have to a hang on. capice?
You gotta be shittin' me! That track needs to be replaced.
Yes, Immediately.
a man could make a lot of money by fixing that, hell they pay me enough I would do it
Too bad the American railway system is among if not the worst in the world.

I'm on the train part of youtube again...
+RipleySawzen Dude yes. I love how I just end up here randomly every time.
Beats the weird part of RUclips. 😎
LOL SAME HERE
+LOVEIsDasani true😎
RipleySawzen tcho tcho welcome aboard the hype train :3
meanwhile, here in england. 'ladies and gentleman, we are very sorry but all train services out of london paddington are delayed due to a stick on the line. we are sorry for any inconvenience'
😁 Really? Wow
Oscar Pittman or leaves..it's true
strake750 the residue left behind by leaves is actually a really serious problem, it means the train can't brake effectively and in the worst case it could slip right past a red signal and crash. But I guess avoiding that isn't as important as being on time, or at least whinging about it
Pabs it wouldn't be so bad if the cost of a ticket reflected the service we get,I'm old enough to remember the days of BR,and believe me,it was a hell of a lot more value for money back then compared with today's State Sanctioned Extortionist's,they told us the cost of rail travel will fall, as a result of privatisation, but look what's happened, every single year it goes up,and it will continue in this trend for ever, the same as the utilities as well....Thanks a lot a Thatcher you rotten old fucking dog
strake750 I can definitely understand that, there are an awful lot of things that could be better about the industry, but my point still stands that "leaves on the line" is genuinely dangerous and worth delaying a train for 🙂
That traindriver must be freaked out by that dude with the camera following him everywhere
Not really. You'd be amazed at how many train buffs film trains. They are everywhere, really. Operators just get used to it. Usually it's just a tripod, with the owner sitting well away.
Gummel its called railfanning genious and engineers dont care
@@ReadingAreaRailfan hehe true
Because of how much this happens I would assume you'd get use to it
*I don't know this for a fact it you have experience on trains PLEAS feel free to correct me*
I thought your userpic was a hair on my almost brand new laptop screen! I even tried to flick it away LOL! Guess I'll burn another one
The screeching from those wagons at the end though.
Loved reading the comments on the railway track. I can’t believe the engine has not come off the track as yet. Love the sounds of locomotives
Cars got speedbumps while trains have this.
Thank you for uploading. Been dying to see the train run from Defiance to Cecil. Although I will admit that looked downright scary watching 3054 run light to Cecil. I can about imagine how it was with the cars. Keep up the great work!
When its just a lite loco you can every tilt and lean better! Thanks I will!
Love those Leslie RSL3L's. Brings back great memories of hearing them on the old Santa Fe. The BNSF runs right behind our apartment complex here in Fresno, and the horns sound like Hell.
I know it's expensive and all... by why the hell won't somebody fund fixing that insanely bad stretch of track? I just did some fiber optic work to assist in the replacement of all of the rail in Illinois from Chicago to St Louis, I know someone's got money to fix this little stretch! Those regular derailments have got to be more expensive and dangerous than just replacing the track.
Trump will fix it , he'll make everything great again remember.
Brownsberg 777 yeah.... yeah... right... right....
This track is run by Pioneer Railcorp, a holding company. Holding companies are probably the worst thing to run a railroad, because they're basically profit-driven ventures and do very little investing towards infrastructure improvements.
Adam Ohm Oh god really? Well, they need to be handed the bill when a train falls off this track then...
Were these tracks laid by Stevie Wonder?
Povl Besser ray charles mightve helped with the design
Povl Besser 😁😁😁
I'm sure those tracks are ugly looking but they been laid way more than some woman out there.
Stevie Wonder with the help of Michael J. Fox.
I drive big rigs for a living, I wouldn't let my rig tip in angles that this train has. Balls of steel.
I feel for the crew! Having driven on some track like that, it is STRESSFUL! Nice video!
WTF?? How is that even possible?
Fuck! That track is so fucking crooked, it's unbelievable.
Fra Daw like Hillary
Why was this in my recommended?
Because RUclips insists you become a raving train fan
Scott Taipale You mean foamer...jus sayin
because trains are awesome
Same
Sky KoreSCL Nonce?
I'm glad they improved and saved a piece of rail history instead of it getting abandoned.
Quite a contrast: immaculately clean locomotive running over cooked spaghetti rails. I guess the steel ties are all-important here maintaining gauge. I don't envy the engineer.
I was NOT expecting that thumbnail to be in this video... holy shit, kudos to yo good sir!
In Germany if someone operated a railroad like this he would go to jail.
To my knowledge, tracks in this kind of condition are only used by freight trains at very low speeds. It's actually not that uncommon for freight trains to derail on minor branch lines due to the tracks splitting; No damage is done to the train and it takes a small crew of professionals with a wooden wedge to reverse the train back on the tracks. Of course they have to pay to repair the tracks but that's cheaper than repairing it in advance.
Main lines and passenger routes on the other hand are strictly monitored for wear or damage and preemptively repaired the instant they're deemed a risk. The branch lines that aren't maintained very well aren't a safety risk because the trains are going very slowly and if they derail they just stop maybe 10 feet after and don't fall over or crash into anything. On faster main lines such a derailment could kill people or spill dangerous cargo or possibly even send train cars crashing into nearby buildings.
In places like Germany or France trains can be travelling upwards of 200KM/h, which is somewhat rare in North America. At these speeds simply hitting a deer or goat can kill or seriously injure all the passengers. Plus high speeds can put a lot of strain on the tracks. Sections of track where these kinds of speeds are approved are usually fenced off and made of really high quality track. I know that the route for the Acela Express was converted from grade crossings to over/under-passes just so that the train could travel at high speeds without any risk of derailing if a car gets stuck on the tracks.
I see your point. But in Germany (and probably in many other countries) no company would be allowed to endanger the safety of their employees in such a manner. Authorities and accident funds would go 100% nuts about it and shut it down at the same day someone reports the track's condition.
That's not really funny because it's getting too close to reality. God bless the mighty Dollar.
yea but Germany doesn't have 20 aircraft carriers and billion dollar destroyers, or 16 lane highways.
"America where we put the mighty Dollar before anything else!"
Well, obviously shows in the poor condition of the railroad track in the video. :)
Great video! I enjoyed watching it.
I remember doing a few transfers to Rock Island's Kansas City yard. You can, at least, see ties in this road bed. I didn't see rail raising a foot into the air 50 feet ahead of the engine, or see it sink in to where the traction motors were dragging in ballast (or what should have been ballast). Compared to what I saw of the Rock Island in it's last days, this is good rail!
I can't believe they let trains run over that track!
How does that thing even stay on the tracks? It's bad enough with just the locomotive, but I can't believe it doesn't derail with all the cars loaded with it!
I love the logo on the locomotive "Pioneer Lines", lol, since their track looks like it's been there since the days of the pioneers and the track reminds me of wagon wheel ruts.
love it, nice video. I remember when the Rock Island (Suburban Line)here in Chicago, had tracks that bad, just like that too. You can see every moving part on the trucks of every commuter car and esp on the F units and E units. Where the switches were, the trains runs over them and rails embedded in the ground pumping up mud and grease and the ties were rotted beyond repair. I remember when the Rock Island track had got worse, and still, no derailments but lot of slow orders.
I've always enjoy watching the wheels make the tracks flex
"Pioneer Lines... Going where rational people don't!" The rehab work is being done to former mainline track that was pretty much left as-is by N&W in 1964. Also, cool loco. Don't expect to hear a 645-series motor in that kind of body.
the power chamber for the #44 bell is not working on that horn. Love all of the Leslie 5 chimes in the intro!
Thank you. Too bad with most shortlines the horn won't get repaired unless it fails completely.
That old Geep was rockin' and rollin'!
Great video!
i have tracks all around me i live near cleveland. these arent tracks this is some metal beat to shit by some thugs and thrown down to resemble train tracks. for fucks sake iv seen abandoned tracks that were straight as a line
Same,
My place there are 120 year old rails and used once a week and maintained and still look better
ashley deihl with the sweetheart deal on land the railroads got. I hope there isn't any local governments putting money into track maintenance
Gregg Acuff don't say where you live otherwise people will rob you.
Go home train. You're drunk.
xD
Lol
Lol
Amazing how these rails can warp or bend!
Nice catch with deer hoping the tracks. My kids love that part.
Neat! Always got to watch extra careful for the deer, trains really spook them! I almost hit one this morning following a CF&E train
It's even scarier in a car..
It's like watching a drunk try to ride a bicycle down a poorly-maintained city street after bar closing time. Nerve-wracking, but you can't look away.
That's simply crazy. Wow.
A railway Kai Tak, well filmed, and nice escape Bambi.
Safest tracks i have ever seen. Absolutely mint
where trains go when they've been bad. Down hell track.

Katayanagi Twins TRON r.i. p because the horns were so loud.
We had some track like that here for some time until a few years ago, then the railroad gave the land to the city. Now we have a really nice asphalt bike trail:-). Sad to see the rails go, but they weren't being used at all.
A little background on this line....
This line was formerly the Maumee and Western, and prior to that was owned by the Wabash. They had deferred maintenance for years and years and years and this is the end result.
You're welcome.
The track featured @1:23 should be OOS until remedial action has been taken.
the click bait photo was taken with a telephoto lens. a telephoto lens exaggerates all of the humps and dips dramatically.
Yes the zoom exaggerates but it's bad anyway, you can see the engine moving around bigtime
whoever is responsible for the track maintenance in this territory should be fired!!
fermin benedetti Sometimes you only have enough in the budget to try and maintain the status quo
9HighFlyer9 pound foolish and penny wise is no way to run a railroad.
Based on the rail and ties along the way, I hope they are going to fix that track!
after looking at tat track all i can say is DAMN! that's an intrepid soul for an engineer!
wow well i'm happy it went safe and sound!
Yup, derailments are not fun for the crews
nope, i bet they were worried along the way, that engine could've derailed any momment! D:
Ive not seen track this bad since the days of Penn Central wow
just like that thomas episode when ducan with
Maddalonefarms I'm mad at myself for understanding that reference 😂
lmao
Tracks have been rebuilt. First work I can remember being done in 50 years. I can remember as a kid it was an n&w line and you could pull spikes out of the ties with your hand. You could ride a bike faster than the train back then. West of Defiance it crossed my Mom’s parents farm. East of Defiance it crossed Dads parents farm. Can’t tell you how many derailments I have seen on this line. Good luck pioneer lines
Would love to see an updated video with the improvements
th fuck am i watching rn
Salty der Regenmacher An big motherfucking train ridin' on a shitty track
At 3:30 to 3:34, the deer crosses the track in front of the locomotive.
tkguyok
tkguyok There's also a train in the video.
ty
the deer assumed it would derail before it got to it.
Amazing video ! Im shocked the track gauge isn't out in some spots !! Bet they have a rerailer on board ready to go haha
Thanks. I'm sure they do, I know the crew used to rerail their own train if it wasn't bad
At 1:14, the tracks remind me of the old Milwaukee Road tracks, back in the day, next to Roder st. in Bellingham, Wa.
damn thing is lucky it doesn't derail itself
Who laid this rail? Did they take the plans from an Italian throwing wet spaghetti at a table?
That was a good looking Mack Pinnacle waiting at the crossing
The same railroad is on the 'tube under it's previous name, Maumee & Western.
Ex Wabash main line, zero heavy maintenance made worse as apparently the area is swampy. That would make the ties rot faster and the track would settle & shift at the joints. In such conditions you would expect to find the railbed paralelled by ditches on each side or embanked above the surrounding ground level for the best drainage.
The view of the tracks and the approaching locomotive at 1:30 is through a lens at the extreme telephoto end, which compresses perspective
Hmm, do trains always use their train horns when the conductors see you filming? Or do you do that hand gesture that people do to truck drives to get them to do that? Thanks haha
How in the heck is the rail warped that badly?? Years of heating/cooling because of changing seasons...?
The intros were great
Can't help but cracking myself up whenever I see this loco maneuvering itself on the melted and snake lookalike track.
Infrastructure? What is that?
Was the C&O locomotive at the hocking valley railroad?
Yup
Awesome videos ! :)
Thank you
You're welcome
Damn! That guy can drive.
I'm not sure how easy it is for trains to come off the track but with the way it wobbles no fucking way would I be standing that close filming
How is this even allowed to go on??
+Danny Soldano I think the messed up tracks is a test for trains. Like, in a special area.
It's a money issue. The line doesn't make enough money to maintain the line. This is waaaayyyy below a class 3 line.
+Danny Soldano
This track is kind of rough, but the way the shot is taken in the video gives it sort of an optical illusion. Each rail section is hump-backed from all of the weight over the years, but it would surprise you how close to correct the gauge would check out on this spaghetti looking track.
In most European countries this wouldn't be allowed.
+MultiMusic european trains are like toys compared to north american trains
That train must've had some smooth suspension!! xD
Excelente Video.
Thank you
Geez, how do the tracks get in such bad condition? And why was the train on them if they're in such bad shape?
I am guessing they installed the track at a bad time, had low quality track, or the railroad is really old. It could be caused by weather warping.
vandalism maybe
I guess It's mainly caused by thermal expansion.
Sector Seven Usually a mix of thermal expansion that then gets greatly amplified over time by the force of the wheels reacting to the uneven rails throwing them more and more over alignment with each passing. But this section of track is the worst I have ever seen in use -- I have only ever seen worse after a major derailment due to thermal expansion (which can be a real, and regular, summertime problem in the South). Ordinarily such track would have been long since repaired or decommissioned, which has me wondering if it is not a defunct track and they are only just now removing some remaining cars from and abandoned depot to clear the way for pulling up the track for good. Rail has been a struggling industry for decades off the most major lines, so we have lost a lot of rail to decommissioning over the past 30-40 years.
1:48 shit! I thought It was a click bait thumbnail, but it was real.
Nice video!
+Boris Lu Thank you
Stan techniczny torowiska pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Like i SUB :)
szlakowiec Nasze PKP PLK lepsze. :-)
how is even legal for a train to go on such ruined railways
It isnt, Its an example of poor maintenance. Suprising that it didn't derail.
Can those tracks handle the load a full train, one like a mile long?
No. The rail is 88 pounds per yard. 136lb rail is the standard for most freight railroads.
Does that mean that a yard length worth of rail would weigh 136 pounds?
francobobfred No it can carry that much weight without deforming.
According to Wikipedia, that does mean a three foot length of rail weighs 136 pounds. I'm assuming Dem Peepers answer is a joke.
I have a paperweight made out of a half-inch slice of rail, and even that is pretty heavy for its size. A friend of mine uses a foot long piece as an anvil and I can't pick it up.
I'm waiting for Percy to start talking about the How We Love the Rickety Old Tracks.
I thought the engine was just testing the track and was surprised when it pulled those 8 boxcars. I think Pioneer Lines needs to pioneer into getting that track up to par.....
Thanks for sharing....
JJ
Thanks for watching
That track is terrible but also remember the wide angle shot exaggerates it. Each joint in the rail is actually many feet apart but in the shot they look like they are only inches away. Funny to watch the train bobbing though!
Yes this reason
Not true
perro horejon why?
rip headphone users on that intro
Mind-boggling
See that big ol' loco just a-dancin' on them rails. You could almost set it to music.
That rail line should be condemned immediately, and the rail line executives should be savagely beaten for forcing rail crews to operate on it.
I hope no hazardous materials are carried on that line.
called excepted track for a reason, 10mph, no more than 5 hazmat cars.
whoooa, whoa, whoa, whoa. NO ONE is getting beaten here just for a bad track. the slower the trains go, the safer the crews can drive trains on this railroad
The crew is probably ecstatic the owners are keeping the line open so they have a job. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. The crew goes to work, gets a paycheck, and hopes that as things get better there can be money put back into the line. The crew is in far, far, far more danger out on the interstate driving near 18 wheelers at 70 mph than anything going on here.
Laura Hill That is NOT the answer. All new rails ties and ballast are needed
Trains
Weebles wobble but they don't fall down.....
I know a few things about trains. but I was wondering, what do locomotives have in the form of suspension? is it just springs on each axel or some kind of shocks? with all that weight I'd imagine there has to be some heavy duty shock absorbency to prevent damage to any mechanical parts.
cool video
did those crossing signals even work?
Nope
Robert Christian
How the fuck is this even legal? WTF
Well did anyone see the guy in the HV vest on the ground there? Maybe they kept the crossing signals from activating because all that was crossing was an engine. And/or they were moving along the line, like moving cars around, frequently
Is it even legal to run on track like that? LOL
The horns sounds like music to my ears
2:54 "pioneer lines", this speaks volumes.
