    Outstanding video. Thank you so much. But there are other exceptions. For example, is it correct: Let's go home, shall we? Regards,

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  11 дней назад +1

      Yes, you can say "Let's go home, shall we?" and it is indeed a tag question.
      In this case:
      The main clause is a suggestion or a request ("Let's go home").
      The tag "shall we?" seeks confirmation or agreement in a polite way, similar to asking "Don't you agree?"
      In tag questions, the auxiliary verb in the tag reflects the mood or tense of the main clause. Since "Let's" (let us) is a suggestion, the tag "shall we" fits because it's commonly used with suggestions or invitations.

    "Aren't I?" Really? Not "Am I not?"

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  2 месяца назад

      Yep, that's right. In standard English, "Am I not?" is not typically used as a tag question. Instead, the contraction "Aren't I?" is commonly used, even though it's grammatically irregular.
      So, for tag questions:
      - Correct (standard): "I'm doing well, aren't I?"
      - Not standard: "I'm doing well, am I not?"
      While "Am I not?" can be used in full sentences for emphasis or formality, it isn't used as a tag question in everyday English.

    Positive... - negative....,
    negative - positive.....
    Rule will it apply for imperative sentence...???

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  14 дней назад

      Good question!
      The rule for using tag questions with imperative sentences is that the tag often seeks agreement, compliance, or cooperation from the listener. In most cases, the tag is phrased as "will you," "won't you," or sometimes "can you." These are typically used based on the tone or formality of the sentence:
      1. "Will you" - used for neutral or standard requests.
      Example: Close the door, will you?
      2. "Won't you" - adds a more polite or persuasive tone.
      Example: Stay for dinner, won't you?
      3. "Can you" or "Could you" - sometimes used when making requests or asking for help.
      Example: Help me with this, could you?
      The tag question usually matches the mood of the imperative sentence, and it softens the command by making it feel more like a polite request or a suggestion.

    Hello! I just want to ask about the negative statement + positive statement question tag. My student asked me why we can't use " are I" as positive question tag but can use "aren't I" in negative question tag. Hope you will enlighten me. Thank you so much!

    • @englishspeaking360
      @englishspeaking360  Месяц назад +1

      Hi! I had never thought of that... but here's the explanation.
      In English, the subject pronoun "I" pairs with the auxiliary verb "am" rather than "are." This is why we say "I am" instead of "I are." Consequently, when forming tag questions, the tag must match the auxiliary verb used in the main clause.
      For the statement "I'm handsome," the correct positive tag question is "aren't I?" This is because "aren't" is the contracted form of "are not," which is used with "I" in tag questions despite the usual pair being "am."
      The reason we can't say "are I" is that "are" does not grammatically match with "I." English uses "aren't I" as an exception for tag questions instead of "amn't I," which would be the logical but nonstandard form. The construction "amn't" fell out of use and "aren't I" became the accepted form.
