Me and my mate were walking along Lime Street in Liverpool on the morning of this recording. A dark blue ex London ambulance pulled up and the front seat passenger asked us where the Cavern was. We gave directions. Lunchtime we went down to the Cavern for the lunchtime session and there was the ambulance parked up, obviously this was the group who would be playing. If memory serves me, they appeared on stage wearing beige suits with bright orange linings. They were the KINKS! They were unfortunately not very good, in fact it would suffice to say that they were terrible ~~~ We we're really disappointed. ~~~~ Move on several months and You Really Got Me was released ~ WOW! what a change! was this the same group? Yes it was, and I became a convert. A great group!!
I think this video was recorded at the night time session, and certainly the soundtrack has been dubbed over later. There are screams on the soundtrack, but in reality the kids who attended the Cavern never screamed for any of the groups
not even for the BEATLES!
Interesting...danke!!
...maybe punk really did start in England
Maybe. But The Beatles made this seem nothing short of tame, with how they were singing, and playing in Hamburg.
The Kinks play the Shaggs
Lol
Wow - Ray with capped teeth!
Earliest Kinks footage l've ever seen.
This is pretty good. When Ray blows the harmonica, they get up a pretty good head of steam. You can't compare them to the Beatles at this time. John Lennon said they were the best band in the world and it might be true. The Hamburg tape in 1962 was powerful stuff. The Kinks are younger here than the Beatles were at that time.
This sounds just like me jamming with Daniel Johnston! Seriously. Specifically on a song he made up on the spot called "Rock and Roll All The Time" as his lithium was really starting to kick in -- he kept playing that same riff exactly as off-key as they are doing here...
A bunch of were stoned in the dorm at Ga Tech 1973 trying to remember the name of the Kinks most popular song, we adked another stoner dropped
In and he said " you got me"
"Long Tall Sally" was some sort of phenomenon that I haven't fully wrapped my head around. What set it off?
Long tall Sally was in fact a transvestite! And she had everything that uncle John needs !!!
I'm pretty sure it's Dave's (ghastly) lead vocal we're hearing.
What raw, rude attitude! This is how rock should be done!
...uhhh, they did get better
Yes they did get better lol
That 's right!!!
There you have it - sometimes you need a point of comparison to realise just how good The Beatles were and how no-one could match McCartney's vocal at this time.
Remarkable. This recording slows down, and speeds up. Sounds horrible. I don't think its the band at all. Remember- this recording is now 58 years old.
its them, they're just out of tune, and the speed slows down in parts
It's live. Probably the sound was recorded with a toaster.
@@recordguy4321 - The recording. And them.
Compare the sound with the other version of this on RUclips. On that version the sound is good, but at the expense of fading out the video every so often.
This is better than Jesus.
Not a beat group
This is GOD.
Qué horror...
Best Band..later!!
I think the kinks could have been up alongside the beatles and the rolling stones if there live performances were better still a pretty cool band though
The Rolling Stones at this time were 100 times better! 😎
But only at that time !!!!
And The Beatles 10000000000000000000000000000x
@@fshoaps ah ah ah !
No one cares!
I Prefer McCartney
The sound mixing is so terrible. Ray Davies and Dave Davies where really young dudes during this performance
They became better...
McCartney >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The best band
Compared to the Beatles not!
@@ronniek7748 that maybe true but the Beatles loved their stuff
Nearly
one of the best bands!
Awful.
I like the kinks, but they are a crappier, less talented imitation of the Beatles & they can't keep time
You’re not wrong, this pales in comparison to Little Richard’s or The Beatles version by a lot.
or alternatively Beatles are overrated, the Kinks are underrated & both were less talented imitations of American rock 'n' roll and r 'n' b acts in their early days
It sounds like it’s the video that’s affecting their tempo: notice how it fluctuates the video in and out of key.
Yes, these teenagers at the Cavern Club were pretty crude imitators ; but Ray and Dave grew up fast. He is Sir Ray Davies now, in acknowledgement of his outstanding songwriting; and Dave has the respect of his peers, like Jeff Beck. The Beatles were great while they lasted; the Kinks and Ray and Dave went on to create great music over the next four decades.
The Kinks and The Beatles are way different
they are awful, and somehow they are boring. they managed to make "long tall sally" boring!!.
The Beatles a million times better than this.
My guess is you've heard almost none of the Kinks catalog.
You clearly don't know what you are on about, this video is quite bad I admit but they was out there head. The kinks are arguably better than the beatles
@@SamJones-dx3gb naah, the kinks are glorified one hit wonders, they had one good song, "you really got me", and that's it.
the beatles were superior in every way.
@@pelgervampireduck , my dear sir, you are a terribly ignorant man. Listen to these: Waterloo Sunset, Days, Sunny Afternoon, Set Me Free, I Go to Sleep; in no particular order. Ray Davies was a great songwriter.
@@pelgervampireduck nahh, the kinks have loads and loads of hits and if you sat down and listen to them you'd recognise loads of their songs, they aren't glorified, I don't think they are spoke about enough, not much people know them, tbf I don't wanna say they are better than whoever cuz everyone was the best in their own way, all I can say is the 60s was one of the best time periods for music, the who, the beatles, the kinks, rolling stones then all the American rock and roll, chuck berry, elvis etc
Horrible.
sounds like crap and the tempo is a mess
Way back when you did not have to have talent or a singing voice to be famous. Sad. Really sad.
Or you mean back then when the basis of fame was real talent rather than hype or looks hehe
Not sad at all. These gauche but eager teenagers (Ray, Pete and Mick 19 and Dave 17) grew up fast, learning how to sing and play. R & R Hall of Fame, Uk Hall of Fame, songwriters hall of fame. Their songs covered by Bruce Springsteen, Cher, Pretenders, van Halen, Tom Jones, Metallica, Norah Jones, Lucinds Williams, def Leppard, Mumford and sons, jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, David bowie, etc etc etc TALENT!
