From a failed sales pitch to Blockbuster for $50 million, to being worth $30 billion, Netflix turned the tides from being a company struggling to break even to a name synonymous with video streaming.
Created by a former marine who became one of the most trusted figures in raising new companies, and a Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur, Netflix’s origins may not be quite what you expect.
And it all started with a CD mailed in a greeting card envelope by a man who described himself as “the worst real estate agent in New York”.
This is the story of Netflix.

Great story.. My family had a chain of video rental stores growing up in the Wash DC / MD / VA markets. We had 24 stores at one point. Many think it was Netflix that ended the video rental industry, but it was really the deals that Blockbuster landed with studios, getting them more copies of new releases at cost, whereas we were paying $80-$90 per copy. I had the idea of movie streaming in the 90's but didn't have the resources or skills to do it. Great video here about how they did it and changed the world.

And, as per usual, everyone forgets how it really started. Netflix begun as all the other illegal streaming sites. The stole their material and tried to sell it as a service without making any deals/licensing with creators or studios. Pretty much like all torrent sites do, but with a cooler and more sellable interface. Luckily they did begin to make deals with studios and creators to make it legal before they were sued.
The exakt same thing that happened with Spotify. They downloaded illegal copies of music and offered them, for a fee, to users before making any deals with anyone. Two of the biggest streaming companies started as crooks but "everyone" seems to have forgotten that. Go figure.

These were the years that our children were young and we rented a lot of Blockbuster and Netflix movies. It even brought back the feeling of the paper they used for their red envelopes! I do remember liking to choose movies quicker and on the spur of the moment rather and waiting on a queued movie. The Netflix transition to streaming was a little rough and I remember being a little stressed by it. Lol But at some point it all smoothed out. It’s our country’s main choice of entertainment! I watch a lot of tiny home You Tube videos and so many times they mention that they enjoy hanging out in their cosy room and watching Netflix! It’s a house hold name and seems to be here to stay for quite some time!

The one thing he got wrong, probably because he's not old enough to remember this, is that while Blockbuster was a popular national chain they were not completely dominant. There were tons of Mom and Pop video rental stores in almost every town. They usually had better prices and better customer service. In my hometown the nearest Blockbuster was 20 miles away. I rarely went there unless there was a video game I wanted to rent and could not find locally
