Hey Peter. Thad Beckum here. I enjoyed your video very much. Well done. I have been watching your channel for a while now. Hope to see more from your channel.
@@peterjuulsgaard Wow. Man I wish we could go back in time to when I made Full Circle. Almost twenty years ago. We are not as young but we keep on doing what we love. Bows and arrows are timeless. Keep posting great videos.
Thank you Peter that's a quick self bow surprised you didn't make a Holmgaard . Thor is a fine helper he knows kom sa 😀 that brought back memories mom was from Aalborg came to the US in 1928 at the age of 6
Respect to you for giving credit to Keith Shannon and Thad Beckum. I's suspect that the East Coast Indians stored their bows in the rafters of their lodges which would be hot and smoky, keeping them dry and powerful? Great video!
Since our historical findings around here where all made of elm. Forexamble the Holmegaard bow and the Møllegabet bow! I suspect the stoneage folks around here to fire dry their staves too. Our climate would make it different to get the moisture under 10%. And they would also starve if they should season a stave 2-3 years! So those guy’s deserve the credit. Thanks for watching
I actually dont have a crono! Sometimes I borrow one in the local club to use in video’s. Feet pr. Sec. Doesen’t mean a lot to me, but one day I might run her through the crono!

Hi Peter, great video. I to am experimenting with the firehardening process, at present I am making a 54" flatbow from hard maple, I tried one session over the charcoal but didn't quite get the result I was hoping for.I'm starting to realize that you really have to 'cook' that wood, just not really crazy about the burnt wood look! But, if you get those results I guess I can live with it! Have made a proper form and wiil try again.. Cheers from Waikato, New Zealand..
Hello to Thor, my Rottweiller's name's ODIN and my German Shorthaired Pointer girl name's FREYA, loved dogs. Good dog wish him best life. Thanks for the advises for drying a bow (clay hayes technique) :)
I have been making a few Osage bows including a bendy bow which I love. I have some hickory ready and plan to heat treat and fire harden them. The white woods are a little more tricky in some ways but can make great bows. great video again my friend
Good work, i think👌 And also a nice puppy😍good luck and have fun with the dog training 😉 I'm working with my Lab (1year) and I try also to have enough time to shooting my bow, so...😩 Anyway , always enough time to see tales from the willows 👍🙌😎
I once bought a moisture meter for this and then learned you apparently have to drive the pins into the wood the whole way to get accurate readings, so I guess not terribly useful for bows. Maybe they can measure the very outer layer. If you force moisture out with heat you definitely need to allow it to stabilize for a week or two before shooting or its too dry and brittle.
I’m Only using the moisture meter to compare, not for accurate reading. Yes it helps to let it stay after firehardening. I’ve made a couple more afterwards with greater results.
the chineese and japanees do thaat to the bamboo. the elm bow I made was a noodle, but when heated it was super., and too the elm in my region is light brown.
What is the backset of that bow now, maybe you have used it a bit and left it strung for longer periods, I ask because I am experimenting with the same process, must say tho I have'nt gone to the stage of actually blackening the wood, maybe I need to!!
Thor is a handsome Vizsla, and that's a good looking bow. If you plan to hunt Thor, introduce him to the gun carefully. I once had a big beautiful Vizsla. He was a great pet, but his previous master ruined him as a hunter. He was so gunshy the sight of a shotgun frightened him.
Thanks for making this! I've seen Thad/Keith's video and Clay's as well, but it's always nice to see another variation! How did you make your form? I'm mainly interested in how you created the curve.
Thanks! The form is made of an old roof plank! I dont know what it’s called in English, but one of the planks you are laying the roof on top of, on a House . I just worked it with my draw knife until it had the shape
In this video I´m inspired by Thad Beckum of @BeckumOutdoors When he and Keith Shannon are making a bow out of a fresh tree, by drying it over fire an firehardening it afterwards! ruclips.net/video/TGRtIFHNAXs/видео.html This wood is elm, Thanks for watching!
peter is there another type of glue i can use instead of hide glue? getting to a point where hide glue smells to much. does titebond glue make a supplement
They do vibrate more than regular recurve limbs! But limbsavers helps alot, and they are not robbing the speed if placed correct! However one of my buddies have Uukha Irbis limbs, and they don’t vibrate less, than the Morrison.
Well, it’s not a good idea to tiller and bend it when it’s still hot! But we can argue about wether it needs to cool down slowly, or fast, I dont know. I just do it slowly
So what do you mean, then? I’m saying in this video that I’m short drawing this bow on purpose, not to stress them too much from the start. How come you think that I cant draw the bow? Those who know my style of shooting from around 200 other videos, know that when I say so, it is so. Thanks for the reply and happy new year
Doesn't matter how much it "follows the string" beyond the straight line. It matters how much it "follows the string" over all. Bows with "set back" in general are stressed much more than straight bows , so they have to be thinner and wider than a straight bow. It's a false assumption that setting back a bow would help with stringfollow.
Update! This bow exploded without warning. I think I cooked it to hard and to fast. I’ll let you know when I’ve made another with this method!
Nooo, it looked like such a nice bow
How much did you shoot it if you had to guess?
@@j.shorter4716 a few days. I think when I started to full draw it.
@@peterjuulsgaard
Do you come across Elm for a heavy war bow?
No I can’t draw that kind of bows. I dont know if elm can be used for that
