  • Ethereum Hackers Guessing Private Keys!
In this video I discuss a recent paper researching how hackers are guessing Ethereum private keys. In theory this vulnerability affects any cryptocurrency that allows you to generate weak private keys.

Thanks for breaking this down and explaining it so well. After working 25yrs in the I.T industry, I'm still amazed at how careless people are with their I.T security - even after their account is breached due to a phishing or a brute force attack, they'll soon forget the pain and go back to their bad habits!

Someone could create a wallet that generates basic private keys, advertise it, get a bunch of people using it and then steal all the funds.

Funny that they spend years and years figuring out stealing with privat keys . Instead they can spend years and years working on an amazing product. They might be wealthier in the last case

Great video brother. I'm wondering: if accessing wallets is just "guessing" a private key, and there are thousands or millions of private keys, and computers like ASIC miners can make biliions of "guesses" a second (quadrillions a day in a pool), then it seems as though finding keys is inevitable. Have I got this right?
I'm thinking we've already created hardware to guess numbers for legitimate transactions, hence why not modify the process to make iligitimate transactions (theft). This is scary to me as it suggests every private key (not just within Ethereum) could be guessed.
Have I got this theory wrong? I sure hope so because if not, I'm not sure how we could secure anything unless it's centralised... Which of course creates a whole new world of vulnerability. My head hurts🤔

No. It takes much more processing to guess a private key than it does to mine, because there are many more combinations of private keys than hashes. It would be more profitable to mine than hack wallets.

interesting. correct me if im wrong, but with a hardware wallet like nano ledger s, which basically is the key to access the funds on the blockchain, its impossible for a hacker to withdraw your funds because you have to physically confirm the withdrawal on the device itself manually.

Great video. But I have a question, hope you have time to answer. In a Hardware wallet like Ledger Nano S, I think we can only store 2 different types of coins? From my experience: BTC and ETH. Afterwards it says, not enough space. So how can we store the Altcoins? Can't keep buying Hardware wallets.

i have ledger nano s, orginally you had to download the bitcoin wallet and ethereum wallet in the chrome app store. downloading the manager app you could install multiple alts on the ledger that was accessed via the bitcoin wallet app. now the user interface is called ledger live, not sure how many coins it accommodates but atleast 5 id say.

If there’s not enough space just delete one app e.g. ETH and install the App of the coin you want e.g. BCH. Coins are not getting lost by deleting an app.

The work around is to have the extra passcode word Its a word that you create yourself when installing the private keys on your hardware wallet. No way can a hacker guess that unless they have key logging software on your device. Trezor, keepkey and nano have the passcode functionality

@@Investor-iv5cr its a long time since I did it on my 3 hardware wallets but I vaguely remember having to write the 24 words down and then create a additional passphrase word on the device.
