The producer took him aside by way of a beer near the studio to tell him that this is Richard's last chance so play it for all you are worth. Nailed it, working to bass and vocals already recorded, and the B-side single that the company HATED got airplay through a friend of Clapton, who heard the A-side and did not like it. Love those backstories of mad luck and no bad luck.
