  • There are many people that believe that the best sounding pickup is the PAF humbucker. There are many people that believe 1959 was the best year for the PAF. There are many people that believe the ES-335 is the only guitar that can dethrone a 1959 burst...so today we put a 1959 ES-335 and a 1959 ES-355 Mono to the test to see if the tone is a good as everyone says! Which one do you like better?

    Wow - First Comment! Such rarified air!! Really dig both of these guitars - do you like filet mignon or lobster better? I'll take Surf & Turf please!! Both sound amazing and less "woody" than mine - a 1971 Cherry #S 335. Bought it through a friend who worked at an insurance company, was 1994, after the 1993 floods in Missouri. Got a call saying - "you like guitars, a Gibson ES 335 is up for auction - are they any good?" I got it for $302! Love it, wish it was one of the two you have there tough. BTW - awesome playing by both of you on this terrific video. ROCK ON BENNY!

    I’ll take the Mono, pretty amazing to find a …64 year old guitar, that looks like that😳,
    gotta a question, Bennie. But your closeup….I couldn’t see any checking…..
    what influences finish “Checking” you have seen/owned tons of Gibsons with Nitro finishes, I have that 66 SG junior, I’ve verified it’s a 66’. There is NO checking, I also have a ‘59 TV special…..it has checking, most 60’s Gibsons I’ve ever seen have Checking, can you do a video on that? Or too geeky even for you🤣

    • @TheNeuroticGuitarist
      @TheNeuroticGuitarist  Год назад

      It's almost completely from changes in climate, in particular the relative humidity. So if you have a guitar that lives in 45-55% RH 100% of the time it'll never check at all. After years and years it rare to see no checking, both of those guitars have some although extremely minor considering, so they were probably both case queens and lived at a place like California vs Arizona where it might be dry constantly.

    • @jonathanstrand2474
      @jonathanstrand2474 Год назад

      @@TheNeuroticGuitarist well then thank you for that! Wish I had your space and budget….😉
      I bought it at a shop 2 miles from the CA beach, in 1995? $500. Then I lived about that far away from the beach, for 8 years, but it mostly stayed in its case while I had it then, because the neck had a cross warp, finally in 2006, a guy made it playable
      It’s weird, it looks to me like it was also a case queen, very few bumps and bruises, no buckle or stand rash. Yet the frets were shot, and I’ve had it refretted.
      But at this point it’s been here in the high desert, dry
      I rarely play it now because it’s a loud rocker, with an SD JB. In it….and I’m playing neck PU jazz and Latin lately on a 2017 Revstar . But 2016-2018 I played the SG daily and it’s stored in a very consistent temp., under my bed on a carpeted cement slab floor
      My ‘59 is in an even better place, it’s problem is the neck was broken twice and poorly fixed both times. Amazingly I found a guy named Milt Owen 1980, he was one of the men building TV specials for Gibson in 1959. He did a miraculous epoxy repair job on it, the neck heel was just shards. Great action, but the scale length changed, because the neck angle changed. Sadly mine was the last guitar he fixed, colon cancer😓
      Plus I love soapbars, but hate hum…..I do need to drag it out and play it, both of these guitars have more than tripled in value, despite my changes.
      $350 for the ‘59, in 1979….investments !😄

I used to judge people for myself who I'd allow to play the les pauls, but we definitely didn't have anything close to this caliber. I find total amusement in stuff like the input jack because I'm sure someone's having a heart attack but the thing is they're my guitars to do whatever with!
