great video. thanks so much for this exceptional troubleshooting procedure and explanation. the high temp limit switch tripped on mine. i will monitor it and replace both thermostats if it trips again.
I have watched so many videos that i was about to cry of so much stress cause i couldn't find out why is wasn't heating. But this video helped a lot. It was a break that was off lol 😂
A broken dip tube can cause water heating problems. The water heater will typically be able to heat the water to some degree with a broken dip tube so we didn't address that issue in this video. Our troubleshooting focuses on problems that will prevent the water heater from heating at all. Thanks for pointing out that problem that can cause water heating problems. It may help viewers whose water heater isn't heating the water efficiently to troubleshoot the heating failure.
When I test the switch between upper and lower thermostat, and the temperature is below what the tank is set at, on the upper thermostat I get 0 ohm between terminal 1 and 2 and roughly 18ohm between 1 and 4 - what does this mean? (This is a brand new thermostat). Upon testing, both thermostats seem to be ok and both elements give 9 ohm resistance. Wiring at the top seems ok too, but tank overheats and ECO keeps tripping!
I tried to look for that reset button. There were two possible places that it could be. When I opened the first place there was a lot of insulation. I saw some wiring, but there seemed to be some cardboard with what looked liked a reset button, but it was covered. I have never done this and that area looked like it should have had a reset button. I opened the second place and the insulation was wet. That made me think that something more might be wrong.
Finding wet insulation indicates that the tank or a water pipe connection is probably leaking. Keep the electrical power supply to the water heater shut off because the wet insulation can cause wiring to short out. The wet insulation also causes an electrocution hazard. I recommend that you have a service technician or plumber examine and repair the water heater in this situation.
I couldnt find any breaks. Still cant figure out what's wrong. I also tested continuity with 1 & 4 and 2 & 4 or the upper thermostat switch and got a reading of 27 ohms. Not sure if that's a problem.
The resistance reading you provided sounds normal, but here’s one more check. Disconnect the black wire from terminal 4 and recheck the resistance. You should measure infinite resistance between 1 & 4 and 2 & 4 with that wire disconnected. If you don’t measure infinite resistance, you’ll likely need to replace the upper thermostat. If you do measure infinite resistance, we recommend you have a service technician examine the water heater because you might have a voltage supply problem. The technician can check the voltage supply going to the water heater. You can schedule service here: www.searshomeservices.com/.
We don’t disconnect the wires from components to test continuity in this video because the circuits are already isolated by their wiring configurations.
The reset button will pop out slightly when it trips. If the reset button doesn't click when you push it in and the reset button only sticks out about 1/8-inch then the high temperature limit switch probably didn't trip. Shut off the circuit breakers for the water heater and check the upper element heating system as shown at 3:49 in the video to see whether the switch is faulty. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.
I have a water heater that is heating very well and up to temp, although it will only produce HOT water if you open two different faucets at the same time, otherwise if you only have one faucet open, it produces WARM water only. Any ideas
We recommend that you have a plumber fix this type of problem. Your water system may have a tempering valve. A tempering valve mixes cold water with the hot water when it senses hot water temperature above scalding temperature. The tempering valve could be leaking or malfunctioning. If your system doesn’t have a tempering valve, you may have a leaky faucet valve that’s allowing cold water to be drawn into the hot water side when you turn on a single faucet.
Many water heaters have a sticker on the top or the side of the water heater that provides the wiring diagram. If your water heater doesn't have a wiring diagram sticker, let us know the model number of your water heater and we'll try to provide you with a wiring diagram.

If you heard a pop noise from the circuit breaker switch and the water heater isn't heating water, then the circuit breaker may have tripped again shortly after you reset it. That could indicate that wiring, a thermostat or a heating element in the water heater has a short circuit to other wiring or metal in the water heater. We recommend that you have a service technician examine and repair the water heater in that situation because a short circuit is dangerous. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, give us more details about your water heater problems.
If I set mine to 120 the hot water doesn’t last that long. With in 10 minutes the water gets cold and the water heater doesn’t turn on. I have to constantly turn it on.
What if there's power, the elements have been replaced, the t-stat has been replaced, the limit switch is pushed, the breaker has been replaced...we did ALL the things mentioned here. No hot water. :( Thoughts?
Hot water coming out much less, whether by single or double knob control. Low pressure? Cold comes gushing out like normal. Anyone know what the PROBLEM might be?
Sediment in the hot water tank or a clog in hot water piping could be blocking water flow. There’s a chance that draining the tank to flush out sediment could restore hot water flow. Follow the steps in this video to drain the water heater tank and flush out sediment: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-drain-the-tank-on-an-electric-water-heater-video.html. If hot water flow is still weak after refilling the tank, you’ll likely need to have a plumber fix the hot water flow problem.
As noted in the above reply to twodogs716, sediment in the hot water tank or a clog in hot water piping could be blocking water flow. Flushing out sediment from the tank as shown in this video may fix the problem: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-drain-the-tank-on-an-electric-water-heater-video.html If that doesn't help, then you'll likely need to have a plumber diagnose and repair your hot water supply system.
when testing the lower heating element the multimeter made a popping noise and now does not want to turn on. I tested the upper heating element and the upper thermostat and it read within the correct ranges. What is my next step?
According to your description, it sounds like you still may have had electrical power connected to the water heater when you tested the lower heating element. Power going through the lower heating element while testing resistance likely damaged the multimeter. The circuit breakers for your water heater may be mislabeled so we recommend that you have a service technician examine and repair the water heater to avoid electrical shock.
Sears PartsDirect you may have blown the fuse in your meter, easy repair. Always check resistance with all power off and isolate or remove the wires from item being checked.
For safety, our DIY advice typically doesn't cover live voltage checks. If you didn't find the problem using resistance checks, the water heater may not be getting power through the circuit breaker. This actually happened to my water heater recently. We recommend that you have an electrician, plumber or service technician check the water heater if the DIY troubleshooting didn't help you find the cause of the problem.
@@searspartsdirect you are absolutely right! I found the problem in the breaker box. One side of the double 30amp breaker was bad. I replaced it and now we have hot water! Thanx 4 the help!

my circuit breakers are not clearly marked. water heater sounds hollow. feels light too. pump for water has been out for a while. what next? I heard a fan like sound coming from it. I don't want it running if it is empty.
Some water heater installations have a light switch in the vicinity of the water heater that you can turn off to shut off power to the water heater. Check for that type of light switch around your water heater. If you find a light switch near your water heater that shuts off power to the water heater, then you can use that switch to kill power to the water heater until you repair the water pump and restore the water supply to the water heater. If you don’t see that type of power switch near the water heater, then you may be able to find the circuit breakers for the water heater through trial and error by shutting off double breakers in your electrical panel one at a time. Once you find the breakers that shut off power to the water heater, leave them off until you restore the water supply to the water heater. Mark the water heater breakers once you find them. If you can’t determine which circuit breakers control the water heater, have an electrician shut find and shut off the water heater breakers then mark the water heater breakers for future reference.
Thank you. I did start flipping switches and accidentally turned off the fridge. I am thinking the fan sound may have been the furnace? I have never heard the water heater before and the furnace is directly behind it on another wall.
Thank you. my last water heater had a knob to adjust from low to high temp. This one doesn't seem to have one. I do not have the light switch option, sadly. I appreciate your video and your response.
No wires should be live when checking resistance. Shut off the house circuit breakers for the water heater before accessing any internal components and checking resistance of components using a multimeter. You should measure around 13 ohms of resistance through the bottom element which often has red and black wires attached to the element terminals. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know the model number of your water heater and additional details about the failure that you're troubleshooting.

@@nafordebi Replacing the upper heating element may fix that problem if the upper heating element is broken. If you replace the upper heating element and the problem continues, you'll likely need to replace the upper element's electronic thermostat ( www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/6911175/0042/159.html ). Here's an error code chart that shows how to test the upper heating element in case you want to test that element before replacing it: www.searspartsdirect.com/water-heater-repair/error-codes/whirlpool_electric_water_heater_error_codes.html . The method for checking that heating element is similar to the testing procedure shown in our video. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

Check the upper and lower heating systems as shown in the video. One of the thermostats or elements may not be working.
