Credit where due, the production is HEAVY on this album. Heavy and not just a wall of noise. Every snare and kick drum hit, every downstroke of James pick punches (not clips) the speakers. I can just imagine if the last 2 albums had this treatment...but they've always tried to have a unique production quality on every album so I'll just really enjoy this one!
DM with this production would have been a lot more of a statement album.

I am not saying newsted didn't play his part well but the pick sound kind of takes away. I like only one where the bass channel has a cool dude playing with fingers. He fits good I must say.

Death Magnetic was good, but the songs on Hardwired and this album are better written and more memorable.

Update: okay I took a break, listened to this again several times, and it really grows on you. This is one for the history books. Shadows Follow may very well go down as one of the great metal songs of all time. Congratulations James, Lars, Robert and Kirk, you've done it!

Even though i dig the singles I think the deep cuts are stronger than the singles.
the best songs on the album were held back.... Inamorata, Too Far Gone, Chasing Ligtht, Crown of Barbed Wire are all better than the singles.

72 seasons is my Metallica jam. Unfortunatelly, there are no better songs but the album slaps. Can't stand You must burn but that's the only dud. The grooves are huge on this album.
I wonder if the mad lads intentionally held back the stronger songs so as not to get people hyped then disappointed. I enjoyed Lux Aeterna, Screaming Suicide and 72 Seasons but so far this and Sleepwalk my Life Away slap better than the preview songs, IMO.
