  • Back again with another Hunting & Fishing NZ “Tip Of The Trip” Willie Duley from NZ Hunter Adventures shows us the difference between down and synthetic jackets and also a few of his stand outs.
Lightweight insulated jackets are now an integral part of most hunter's kit to help keep warm on the hills, but with a wide array of options available choosing what’s right for you can be a little hard knowing which is better suited.
The first thing to consider is whether you require a down or synthetic jacket is that down insulation has a superior warmth to weight ratio. It's also highly compressible and can be crammed right down to take up less space in your pack. The major weakness with down insulation is you can't afford to get it wet as it can lose its loft alongside all its insulating properties leaving you feeling cold and damp.
Synthetic insulation on the other hand works well when it's wet, generally operating 80% to 95% of its dry performance. Although it's not waterproof, you will still get damp but stay much warmer compared to a down jacket. It's also tougher wearing by nature and will better withstand snags and tears when pushing through scrub. The notable downside is your synthetic jacket will be heavier and slightly bulkier than the down equivalent.
Willie's preferred synthetic jacket has long been the Rab Xenon jacket and now the Rab Xenair Alpine jacket as they are surprisingly hard wearing, he finds himself living in them on trips more than any other clothing item.
When used in conjunction with his synthetic jackets on trips, Willie tends to take one of the lighter weight down jackets like the Rab Microlight Alpine jacket. They're definitely less robust and tear resistant than their synthetic cousins.
On super cold winter trips he’ll take a bigger and warmer down jacket like the Rab Infinity jacket and Rab Valiance jacket. This is a good option for those hunters wanting one super warm do it all down jacket, and it’s also hard wearing and waterproof.
So, have a chat with your local Hunting & Fishing NZ expert to see what jacket is right for your next hunt.

I what Rab pants are good at not being loud? Most of the ones i saw looked like they would make a lot do noise.
