When to grow out grey hair - An honest conversation

  • The decision about when to grow out grey hair can be tricky. All the advice about transitioning to grey gracefully can be intimidating and expensive if you enlist the help of a salon. Without realizing it, friends will project their own fears about getting or looking old and make you nervous that you should wait. There's no rule book or common age to do it so it's a personal decision that I actually don't even think is such a big deal. Let's get honest and talk about it.
Lately I've had more and more white hairs sprout at the front of my hairline and it's been tricky to keep up. After a while I started to question why I didn't want to see these hairs, because actually, when I look at them I feel that the color really suits me. Wouldn't it be easier, cheaper and healthier to let my hair do what it intends to do at this age? Why is it seen as a big deal for me to do this before 50? Shouldn't I feel ok with looking like...my myself?

I stopped coloring or cutting my “pretty”, “elegant”, and boring brown bob when Covid hit. Luckily I also retired at the same time. Now at 71, It has been a fun, freeing and enlightening experience.
I discovered Monique Parent on RUclips at around that time. She is such an inspiration on looking like your authentic self (unless you are performing).
Much like you, she is fun, creative, self effacing, inspiring and definitely one of a kind.
Recently your channel showed up on my feed and I am so thankful that each of you quirky, intelligent and authentic beauties share your unique and gratifying approaches to this journey. 💖🏆

just turned 50 and defied my stylist, who told me 'your too young to go gray' and I made her transition my hair in 1 10 hour session. (see profile for finished product). Im now able to go in every 6-7 weeks for a tone, vs every 3.5 weeks for a color...and she laughs so hard.... saying I cant believe you look younger with gray hair! I LOVE IT>

I love, love, love my grey hair! I grew it out during COVID when all the salons were closed. It's a far softer look for me. I'll never go back. I am my authentic self. Just keep it shiny with a deep conditioner and purple shampoo (both once a week or so), and it will be beautiful! ❤

I’m 48 and stopped coloring my hair in 2018. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.. I get more people making positive comments about my hair than I ever did with dyed hair. During the process you will have naysayers. After the process those naysayers start going gray as well. It was one of the most interesting, liberating journeys that I have ever been on.

I love your attitude about this journey. When I grew out my grays several years ago, I started paying more attention to women who also had stopped coloring and went gray. And just like you, I started noticing how perfect their hair color went with their skin tone and eyes. It was a duh moment. And to see all the cool different variations of gray is fascinating. I also thought I was going to be mostly white but to my surprise the white is mostly around my face and temples but I'm still about 50% brunette, especially in the back. I also have a darker streak that runs through my white bangs which I think is fun. Enjoy your journey!

I did this two years ago and it's a love/not love journey. I am a cool salt and pepper with salt in front and pepper in the back. Some days I don't mind it, some days I mind it a lot. But every day I know I am not willing to get back on the dye treadmill. You will be surprised at how few grays you actually have. When you're dying it seems like you're going to be 100% white based on what peeks through the hair dye in two weeks, but that's not the case. Be prepared to figure out what colors look good on you again. Good luck! Love your quirky videos. More French girl content!

Please do NOT listen to the biases of others, they are free to choose whatever they want for themselves and usually their concerns tell you more about their fears and issues than anything else. I very rarely comment on anything on Y.T. but recently found your videos and as a 64 year old woman who also chooses to be herself, I salute your stance on being the unique and beautiful individual you are. I have to say, I certainly would not have taken you for 47, perhaps 37, maybe, but whatever you’re doing, keep on doing it because you look absolutely stunning and yes, very French. I stopped using colour on my hair about ten years ago and what freedom there is in not having to continually use colour that isn’t good for us anyway and quite costly over time. It will probably take a few months if not a year to really see what you look like with your own unique colouring, but I’d bet it’ll be beautiful. There’s nothing more liberating than being authentic. All the best. 😊

Hi Diana! I look forward to watching you on your journey. I am 66 and stopped coloring my hair after I turned 50. I probably look older because of it, but I don't care. I was tired of freaking out when my roots started to show and I think my hair stunk no matter how often I washed it. It was spongy and felt weird. Most of the time I did it myself but would sometimes treat myself to a visit to the salon. Best decision ever (well after deciding to become a Mom, and quitting smoking)!

I had dark chestnut hair that started going gray when I was in college, and I dyed it for decades. When I was 50, I was *over* it. I went the pixie cut route and then grew it to a medium bob. My natural hair is so much thicker and healthier now. It's silver in front but still very dark closer to the nape of my neck and people ask me where I get my cool color combo done. :D

Yes, love your attitude about it, I feel the same. I stopped coloring my hair seven years ago for this same reason of curiousity of what my natural greying color would look like. Oddly enough, I just colored it (trying esalon for the first time, lol) TWO days ago! Not to cover the grey, just for something fun. I dyed my hair various colors in my teens and 20s for fun and will continue to sometimes play with that! Like you, I don't think going grey is some BIG thing. I'm sure I'll grow it back natural again. And probably dye it again... who cares? It's fun.

I'm a decade younger than you and decided four years ago to stop coloring - I didn't want to deal with the grow out issue when I inevitably went grey. I have sporadic grey/white hairs and I get summer highlights done and winter demi/glosses. I love how the greys/whites look with a color gloss over them - shimmering gold strands against a rich brunette. I think the biggest issue with them is that they can have a different texture than the rest of the hair. There are shampoos and treatments that can help with the texture issue. I do take mineral supplements to slow down the process, and improve overall hair growth.

I think grey hair only suits very few skin colors/tones. I'm light olive skin i would look horrible with grey hair. And plus grey hair ages your face. When you have no wrinkles, sagging, etc coloring your hair makes sense, because the color matches the age of your face. So i'll keep coloring my hair.

I gave up bothering with hair colour during the pandemic. My hair was losing its red brown colour in the weirdest way in 2018, but it was going in streaks of blond . Now it fades at the bottom...which it weird, but my pony tail or bun still has streaks of blond or whitish blond. I'm 49 now. God is the most original hair dresser, and my cousin actually tried to colour her hair to match mine. She's 30, which was a disaster. I has no idea til she admitted it after. I say ROCK it, and don't concern yourself with colour anymore. Considering I was colouring to have fun and not hide anything, fashion is you and your personal style baby. Cheers ✌❤🇨🇦

I took my hair grey during the pandemic - it had gotten to the point where I needed to color every three weeks or so and it was so expensive and was really just not quite suiting my complex ion anymore. My skin and eye color seem very similar to yours, and I was worried that the grey would make me blah, but I just decided it was time, and trusted that I could make it work with clothing and makeup choices. I also wanted to do it when I was young enough to play it as a style choice;-). It’s turned out a warm grey with natural high and lowlights and I’ve gotten an insane number of compliments from friends and strangers. It’s been challenging to learn to dress for it - I wore black only for years, but lighter colors have ended up being surprisingly good on me. Anyway, all that to say I hope you enjoy the journey! I look forward to seeing how it goes.

I just turned 40. I have been getting greys since my early 20's but I didn't dye it until I was about 37 years old. I just stopped in Sept 2023. I have about 5-6 inches grown out, and my total hair length is just below my shoulder blades. It hasn't been such a big deal. It felt like a big deal in the first few months but I have grown to just accept where I am at and keep going. My hair is SO much healthier. I have maybe 30% greys and dark brown hair so it's not like a black and white contrast, it's blending pretty nicely. Some lighting makes it look more intense (the demarcation line). The dyed part is very warm and brassy, and my natural hair with the greys is very cool toned. That is my least favorite part about the growout. I know it is going to take me 2-3 years to fully grow it out....which is a long time, but I am buckled in and along for the ride. Thanks for talking about this! I love seeing women with their natural hair now more than ever!!!!

But the greys at the front still show, and bother me. So when i have fashion events where I want to have those greys NOT be seen, i use eye shadow to fluff over the very grey stands and the grow out in my part of my fringe (or bangs as you call them) at the front. I might be obsessing too much, but its a quick hacvk i developed and it works. Thx...i really llike yoour channel

I started growing out my grey in December 2019. Having dyed my hair for so long, I asked my hairdresser to bleach my then-short hair as light as possible as the grey grew out. In early 2024, my grey/white hair grew out down to my waist. I just had it cut to shoulder length recently. I had my first grey hair a few years after puberty! It must have meant to be to have grey hair. I often received the complement that grey hair suits me as if I've had it forever 😄 I recommend Kérastase Blond Absolu range. I love the Hydrating Illuminating Shampoo of that range. The Cicaextreme Hair Repair Oil is great too. Grey hair is prone to dryness and damage from losing keratin protein. Bond repair treatment once a month is helpful.

I’m with you, Diana, I just turned 50 and have long hair that is roughly half grey on top and half old warmish highlights on the lengths. A few notes; just like you said with cutting your hair short, people will react strongly to it. “You look SO DIFFERENT” is a standard one. People you haven’t seen in years won’t recognize you. Also, you will need to change your makeup and clothing because your hair will pull way cooler than before, so prepare to adjust every part of your overall color look. Also, grey hair requires some different care than colored hair. It needs protection from sun and heat and loads of moisture, so do your research on that. You’re going to love meeting your grey pattern for the first time. It is a glorious creative experience.

I started going grey in my early teens- I was thrilled finding those first few strands but my mother (who I inherited this trait from) wailed with anguish when I showed her. I kept coloring my hair for years after that, not because I wanted to, or felt I had to, but because I wasn't sure how even it looked underneath. It was a hassle to get my hair professionally colored every month because the grey reappeared within days.
My pixie cut hid my grey roots well- one day when I had let some time pass between colorings, I examined the inches of grey root growth and was ecstatic to see not only was it solidly grey, it was a stunning sparkly metallic SILVER! That did it- I let it grow out and I love, love, love rocking the beautiful silver grey hair I'd been looking forward to having since I was a teenager. I get lots of compliments on it, mainly from men, FWIW. And the silver lining (heh) to this? My grey hair is not only far more flattering to me, it actually makes me look YOUNGER.

You have the right attitude about going grey. There's nothing tragic or scandalous about it-- it's just an opportunity to try a new look for fun! If you like the grey color, you can keep it, and if you don't like it, you can cover it entirely or do lowlights and highlights to make it blend in. It's all about what works for you. I believe experimenting with grey hair is no different than curling your straight hair or straightening your curly hair or getting a wild and crazy haircut or extensions. It's just a fashion statement, and a temporary one at that, unless you happen find a look that you enjoy so much that you decide to keep it for the foreseeable future.

Diana, I hope that you like your grey better than I did. I too saw a beautiful sparkly white at my roots in the front and sideburns, and was actually excited to grow it naturally thinking it would be like my Nana and Father’s glorious, sparkling white hair. It seriously looked like there were diamonds in there! Covid gave me a great way to grow my hair out; our town is truly remote…. no doctors, hair stylists, clothing stores, etc. Well, to make a long story short, I HATED it! It did NOT all grow out that glorious white I saw around my face. It was a dull grey for most of my head, with the back being predictably darker. My problem was, it just wasn’t a nice grey, and even hubby - who can be supportive to a fault - agreed that the colour was not a pretty shade. I even tried just putting a punch of bright pink in the front, but still it wasn’t good. My stylist at the time suggested that I bleach my hair monthly. Oh sure, let do an equal amount of maintenance, but let’s do even more damage? No thanks. If I have to choose one or the other, I will stay with colouring my hair rather than bleaching it on the regular.
I truly hope you have a nicer grey than I had, Diana, but don’t be surprised at how dark the back of your head is. That is the last place to evolve to grey. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 for you❣️❣️

Do it! I'm 52 and on December decided to stop dyeing my hair. I came back home from a long trip to India, and I saw many female European tourists with their natural greys and they all looked so beautiful. I'm fair skinned and in the soft summer season. My greys are not black and pepper, due to my natural ash blonde hair. They are very blended.
One thing that made me to decide upon this journey was that if I waited more years to make this transition it would have been more shocking. I still have a somewhat youthful physical appearance and it hasn't been a major contrast between my face and my grey hair. I let it grow for a while, removed all hair dye and went for a pixie cut. I decided on that route because I knew a pixie would look good on me and I was 100% sure I could pull it off. This journey is different for every person, but I'm so happy I made it!

Im excited for you! I think you will like it and look great with the greys. I had stopped coloring a couple of years ago, and I really love my grey hair. Although I've got a lot of grey, my hair is not entirely grey yet, and it's the natural brown still left in my hair that I dont like. It's a very sad mousey brown. I decided to have a brown added in selected sections around my face, but it's just not natural looking. I think some uncolored strands of grey are needed in the back to soften my look and make it look more natural. But as it is now, the back is completely colored. And, well, when I clip my hair up, which I do quite often, it looks like I'm wearing a fake bun that doesn't match. Lol. Plus, I'm back to the upkeep that I originally wanted to get away from. Now I'm contemplating if I want to continue with the lowlights or all over color, or just stop coloing all together.

I’ve tried growing out my grey (I’m 55 and nearly fully grey, I think!). But for me, the grey isn’t lovely complementary silver fox tones- it makes my complexion look pale, blotchy, and unwell. I don’t mind looking older, but I do want to feel good about how I look. So I continue to play with dye, and compromise by leaving a grey streak undyed at each temple. I can feature them when I style my hair, or let them blend. That way, I proudly “own” my grey in a way that feels a bit rebellious and still flattering.✨

I'm a bit the same. I found my first greys at 19 and have been dyeing my hair many colours since i was in my mid-teens. I've intended to "go platinum" at 30... 40.... 50... I'm 48 now and giving it another go, but the truth is, i feel like i look better and feel better with dark hair! I'm fair-skinned, and feel like the light tones make me look washed out - even tho i like the bright silvery shine as it comes through. And there's a point where dark hair starts to look quite heavy on you as you age... Currently i am just lightening my dye colour so that the regrowth is not as extreme or noticeable. Once the red tones have mostly grown out in think i'll add some violet, just for fun.
The other biggie for me is having to adjust my wardrobe after decades in black and dark colours to a palette that is less heavy or jarring with the light hair. It is quite a process for me...as well as accepting my age. That's a bit of a mind-f*ck tbh! But it is inevitable.

I think men and women who get salt and pepper hair or white hair can look stunning. Not everyone ages the same though. My parents had very little gray hair until the day they died. Just around the hairline and temples. I have inherited that trait. It looks a bit strange to do nothing so my hair colorist does what he calls 'baby lights' to blend it in with my natural color. It's low maintenance and grows out well.
