    This video does a great job of illustrating how important it is to use potting mixes that allow for aeration of roots. Recently, upon the advice of a commercial nursery, I’ve begun adding a small amount of ashes from my wood stove to my potting mix and so far so good with that. Love your plantology lessons. Thanks.

    Your standard mix looks a lot like mine, except I just buy coco coir and worm castings for the soil component and then use orchid mix for the chunky stuff. Thank you! The manjula will love a pole. I added mine on about 5 months ago. I'm sure the lemon meringue will love climbing! The chunkier mix is to help reduce rot since you water the moss more often it can drip into your substrate so it needs to allow for that drainage!

    Ever since my root rot disaster, I've been doing the same. I've been repotting with chunky mixes. What I've been doing differently is using coco chunks and coco peat instead of potting soil bc I'm trying to go peat moss free. The best part about plants is all the experimenting. My plant room closet is just full of potting amendments bc I buy everything in bulk. I don't have any pumice or fir bark yet. I've meaning to buy some to try adding into my mixes as well. Eveytime I repot is different.

      It can be tricky and they take some practice figuring them out. It’s important to have an aerated mix so extra water can drain through. Moss continues to drip after watering too so if the soil is still wet then don’t water the moss all the way down :)

      I haven’t had an issue with gnats with fox farm after repotting but if you use any soil gnats will be attracted to it. I water in mosquito dunks routinely for gnats. • @plantsbymelissa

      I think some moss is okay to use! I know it can retain moisture but if the mix is aerated enough it shouldn't hold onto it for too long. Have you looked at the root system or know about how long the mix you made retains moisture for? Yellowing can be hard to pinpoint sometimes but mostly due to a watering issue, stress (like pests), or lack of nutrients/light so make sure you're fertilizing too!

      I do only use moss for moss poles. You can use a aroid mix if you want but I'll use the chunkier mix for moss poles for the soil base :)

    I like to add a dash of worm castings too. It's already in the soil mix but since I have it🤷.
    You showed another mix a few videos ago with leca, bark and pumice. What would you with that now?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Год назад +2

      Oh that was just leftover chunky stuff I added to a bin. I used it all repotting so many plants these past couple weeks. I kept adding it to my normal mix to make it more chunky for some plants I repotted.

      @@plantsbymelissa I'm glad you using mentioned perlite or pumice. Pumice is so much chunkier but I didn't know if it was as moisture retentive enough as the perlite.

    In your moss pole mix, do you ever experience the more finer substrate settling at the bottom of your pots when you water?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Год назад +1

      No, not really. I think some finer pieces can settle with any mix but it's pretty chunky all the way through ☺️

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Год назад +2

      It depends I guess on how much repotting you have to do. Since I'm no longer using Sols I have added a lot more plants to the repot list. But once they're all repotted they'll be good for at least a year or 2 even depending on the plant. Everyone will be in a happy substrate that I don't have to worry and I won't have to 'remove old soil'. I can just upsize and not have to worry about it.

    Hello Melissa :) I thought it is called moss pole because you just put moss in it to keep it moist at all times. Is that not the case? Greetings from Germany :)

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Год назад +3

      Yes, this mix is for the base! I still use moss in the pole. Some people do use an aroid mix in the pole :)

    • @Kelly_Mae
      @Kelly_Mae Год назад +1

      Hi! Part of the moss pole will need to be planted in the soil with your plant. The moss pole above the soil line is filled with moss. The part of the moss pole under the soil line gets the super chunky mix to help it drain easier. I hope this helps 😊

  • @lisaanglim9588

    I have a question: why do you mix such small amounts of soil instead of using a larger container making larger amounts?

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  Год назад +1

      I can keep the smaller bins in my plant room closet and it's just easier for me to repot with. I tried to make a bigger bin of it up and it was too much at once.

      I’m pretty sure her moss poles are all moss except for the small part that is in the soil. This is the mix she makes just for that so that big chunk of soil in the pot in the pole doesn’t hold a bunch of water and rot the roots.
