  • There is an increasing trend of States taking hostages as a bargaining tool for international diplomacy. Home governments have not caught up to this practice, and their response is often inadequate. What are the available legal tools for families of victims? What should states be doing to combat this growing issue and what can we learn from recent cases?
This webinar will be moderated by IBAHRI Director Baroness Kennedy and will bring together the families of victims and representatives from the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada to discuss best practices in this increasingly dark side of diplomacy. Moderator: Helena Kennedy, IBA Human Rights Institute, London, England, Roger D Carstens US Department of State, DC, Washington, USA, The Honourable Professor Irwin Colter, Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, Quebec, Canada, Richard Ratcliffe, husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, England; Carine Kanimba, Daughter of Paul Rusesabagina, New York, New York, USA
