Welcome to the Dreamworld! Dreamcatcher are very unique. They are the dark angels of Kpop and the only girl group who consistently incorporate Rock and Metal in their title tracks, fusing that with Kpop into something that basically is a new genre. They also are drenched in horror and social criticism, which again is special. Plus, they are massively talented, all of them. And while the girls look like they could rip out your spine when they are on stage, off stage they are adorable crackheads. 😉 Boca means "mouth" in Spanish and Portuguese and is part 2 of the Dystopia trilogy, which deals with bullying and hate comments, in particular the online variant ("A trick behind a mask, a ridiculous freak" from Scream). Boca has the lines "Why do you fill your precious time with hate" and "Too many angels dying now", which points to the effects those comments can have. Several Kpop idols have committed suicide in recent years, most likely because of cyber-bullying, but this is also about all the unnamed people who suffer from online bullies. A girlgroup tackling such a subject impresses the hell out of me. They literally go to war in this video and tell haters to go and shut their "Boca" in the lyrics. And the song is absolutely awesome! Who said you can't have three different musical genres in one song? Odd Eye is part 3 of the Dystopia trilogy. People can get lost in the world of the Internet and social media and their online personas can take over their life. Dreamcatcher want us to use our odd eye to see through the lies (on Facebook and others) and don't be fooled by the "lies masked in sweetness". I can only recommend to keep reacting to them, they are always interesting and entertaining! And the song is a banger! Scream is part 1 of the Dystopia trilogy. It is mostly showing the victim's perspective of (cyber)bullying, comparing it to a medieval witch hunt and a burning at the stake. The tree is the tree of language, and it grows black fruit for every hurtful thing people say. Note also the hand gesture, it is the devil's horns introduced by Ronnie James Dio as a symbol for metal, but it originally was a gesture in the middle ages to ward off the evil eye, tying into the witch hunt theme. I really enjoy the music, it's rock mixed with EDM. Dreamcatcher are always very creative, and they are in their own genre by this point.
To put it simply, Dystopia is a trilogy against hatred! Scream = Medieval era, with the label "Hear No Evil"; Boca = Our time, this time the label is "Speak No Evil"; Odd Eye = A distant future, with finally the label "See No Evil". To make it a little literary for you, I'm going to write this for you in the form of a story::
See. not quite. The tree itself is not evil. It is literally the Tree of Language. . It's been corrupted by the way people use their words and begins to decay and die.
Thanks for checking out Dreamcatcher! Scream, Boca, & Odd Eye are the 3 songs that make up the Dystopia Trilogy, which is a social commentary on online bullying, hate speech, & the reality that social media is just a sweet lie covering up darker realities. Dreamcatcher always have deeper meanings in their songs and lyrics and tend to tell stories over multiple comebacks. If you're not into unravelling the underlying messages though, their music and visuals are still fantastic, and the storylines just act as another layer for fans to pick apart. Scream is from the perspective of the person being persecuted and the Devil Eyes Come line refers to the eyes of bad people watching everything they do and looking for any excuse to accuse them. The hand symbol they use there was used in the past as a way to try and ward off evil, which is why they make that hand symbol while singing that specific line. Hope that helps clear it up for you. I hope you decide to check out more of their work. Their earlier stuff is more j-rock inspired with their newer stuff being more experimental with progressive, industrial, & grunge rock. Their b-sides though have always been extremely diverse and span dozens of genres and sub-genres including R&B, Trap, EDM, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Funk, Reggae, and much more. If you want to check out their work from the beginning the first storyline, Nightmare, is comprised of the following songs. Chase Me - debut song Good Night Fly High - this is a prequel to Chase Me and shows how they were cursed as Nightmares. You & I What Piri Breaking Out - Their first Japanese release and an alternate ending to the Nightmare series. Enjoy!
regarding the "devil eyes come", its a reference to protection from hexes and curses, as well as to casting them. The "evil eye". Weird, but old superstitions are like that. They made sense then. So it does double duty in this song. It both starts as a plea for protection when they "don't wanna scream" and as a curse when they finally give in and "just want to make you scream" .

If you want to hear another side of Dreamcatcher that IS not rock, I recommend Red Sun, black or White and Silent Night ❤
