That was the best overall description of how the boolean operations work that I have seen. Thank you! I had not yet learned about the non-destructive compounds, so that will be very useful!
Top-notch video in explaining everything we need to know about this subject. Affinity needs to seek people like yourself out that's clear and straightforward with good explanations of their software, tips, and tricks.
I'll be honest, I was afraid of the term Boolean and kept ignoring that section when starting out. I learned a lot from your video and appreciate the clear and concise information and explanation!
Excellent tutorial, i am a beginner and so really appreciate the time you have taken to provide such clear instruction, you have made the learning fun and accessible.
Hi! Enjoy your tutorials! Learn a lot from them. Kinda limited because I’m on an iPad ! I’m wondering, albeit I’ve tried, with a mouse and keyboard, am I able to do non destructive compounds with the Boolean operations on an iPad? Thanks, in advance, for an rsvp. Much appreciated! Keep imparting your knowledge!
Excellent explanation, is there the possibility of assigning different colors to the elements while maintaining the non-destructive function? It would be useful
Thanks, you can make a compound shape like a subtraction/add etc by selecting your elements then go to layer then create compound. Now you will be able to make changes to your previous actions. The colour of the layer underneath will be the colour kept when the subtract or other options are carried out. Hope that helps
Very helpful thank you! One observation I made when combining 2 objects with the add button, I noticed that curved objects (when joined with another object) ever so slightly change geometry. As in, the node points slightly move out of position, even when the layers are locked. You have to zoom all the way in to notice it, so it's no big deal. Just thought it was odd, as I'm currently working on a logo trying to make it as accurate as possible. I don't know if It's a bug, despite how indiscernible the problem is, but the compulsive side of me just wonders, why that happens? Try it and see if you get the same results.
Thanks for watching. You know I've not actually noticed that. I just did a little test and nothing has moved (position of nodes or shape outline) I tried it on a circle and a square and a shape I drew out with the pen tool. I'm on a mac. Perhaps it's a bug. Maybe try and update it, or inform Affinity about it.
Question please. When replicating what you are doing, the boolean icon in a compound does not display in the layers panel when shape is highlighted. Do I need to add this from somewhere? Thanks,
You can use the boolean operations on shapes that are not closed, but upon doing that, it will close the shape you are cutting. You can use lines created with the Pen tool ( the strokes) and then, use the subtract boolean operation, but you would need to expand the strokes first (go to layer>expand stroke)
Awesome i love your tutorials :) , i have question about the divide geometry do you know how to get rid of the white gap and the unnecessary curves after using the divide geometry ?
Thanks BrownBerry360! Those white lines (the gap) you see after using divide, won't actually be visible after you have exported your project to jpeg for example. After using the divide tool, any shapes you want to get rid of, you have to manually select them and delete.
Not by default but you can set your own shortcuts. if you go to settings > shortcuts> on the drop-down menu select layers> now you will see all of the shortcuts, scroll down to geometry and you will see the Boolean operations> to set the shortcut on one of them, click on the box next to it and add your shortcut
Finally a video that explains a subject as it should Having watched many Affinity Designer videos I am completely confused...I think I should have been born a mind reader The person making the video knows the solution but has zero ability to teach anyone We...with no clue....are meanwhile furious
Ha i had a good laugh reading that. Thank you for watching I appreciate it. I have loads of Affinity Designer Tutorials so go and watch those if you want
Having used the shape builder tool in illustrator I'm finding it difficult to create more complex Boolean operations in Designer. Often doing one might create multiple anchor points in a tiny area or may leave thin slivers of geometry at the edges of a subtract or divide. Frustrating and time consuming to manage to say the least. Maybe I just need to practice more.
Hey buddy. Im trying to add objects together but retain the colour of the objects. Is it possible to do that? Im trying to make 4 pie quarters into one circle but it just makes it one solid colour.
Hey there, when you add shapes together so it ends up as one shape it will take on the colour of the original object. Affinity has a pie tool, can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but it's in the tools bar on the left. That's perfect for making slices of a pie 🥧
ArtistWright I managed to knock something together using 4 quarters and it looks ok. I will check out the pie tool as well to see if that works any better. It’s the fire fly guy so will pop the preview on insta. Still WIP 😊
ArtistWright oh yes I saw a tutorial on this and you had to use 4 individual layers which I thought was a faf but it is how I made the quarters lol 😂 I just thought there was a better way to fuse multi coloured objects together
The problem I have is not with circles and squares. Like for example, if I have a flag and I want to knock out text from it. What conditions must be met to use the boolean tools, I a missing something trying to do this. What types of files and such. thanks for any help,, this is driving me crazy I swear.
Hi, go to the text layer and select it. Now go to the layers drop down menu at the top, click convert to curves. Your text has now been converted to curves and each letter will most likely be on a different layer in the layers panel. Make sure the layer you want the text knocked out of is underneath the text. Select both layers and select subtract. That should do it
Alright buddy I subscribe to your channel hoping you will help me master Affinity designer. Am not even a novice. I only downloaded the software yesterday.
Very well explained. The recap before next step is one of your magical talent for teaching. Two thumbs up !
Thank you I appreciate it

Hello! And thanks for that comment, I appreciate it alot.
Very clear, very useful. I learned easily and am grateful
Thanks Ian!
Thanks ArtistWright. You helped me master the pen tool. I always hesitated using it until I watched your pen tool tutorial.
That is great to hear, thank you Lewis
I just wanted to thank you for your time and effort. Your videos made it a breeze getting started with Affinity Designer.
I'm happy that my videos are helping you. More to come in future

Yes it is, works differently though
How do you do non destructive on an iPad?
