Even I already have NET. I am often criticised for attempting the exam stating that I am taking away someone else’s opportunity. But I’ve no means to get JRF other than getting into that 6% criteria in the first place. There is one simple fix for this. Making NET exams like CA exams where one time profile creation could be made for every applicant and they may register for subsequent examinations. Thereby NTA could easily know the progress made by each and every students and they may avoid overlapping of existing NET holders.
There is no point in merely increasing the percentage of candidates clearing the NET when job opportunities remain limited, as it only aggravates the existing lack of employment opportunities. The number of students qualifying the exam should be proportional to the positions available. A standardized, single mandatory national-level exam should be implemented for PhD admissions and assistant professor eligibility. Currently, even individuals with JRF, PhD, and postdoctoral experience remain unemployed.
Got the point. But I feel the solution to overcome unemployment is not reducing number of qualified candidates but by increasing employment opportunities.
As you mentioned, employment opportunities should increase first; only then does it make sense to raise the percentage of candidates qualifying the exam. In the current scenario, where there are no employment opportunities, merely increasing the percentage will not help. Even the limited percentage of people who have cleared NET/JRF are not getting enough job opportunities. If additional people qualify without job opportunities, it will only increase the number of unemployed NET/JRF-qualified candidates and PhD holders.
This is something I have been thinking why UGC has not been looking up on this issue.... People are writing again and again for jrf and many coaching teachers are also writing which is ok but if there is a provision in the application process to chose accordingly then many people could qualify
