    Got my POD Express a few days ago. Definitely a cool tool. Bought it mostly to do some street sets at SXSW this upcoming week with battery powered EV speakers with no power around.
    Sounds are decent. Not being able to tweak effects too much is a bummer but are usable and functional. I setup a clean patch and a dirty patch.
    I also changed the foot switches in the global settings to bypass both the gain and delay sections.
    Seems pretty useful as a backup or alternative to my HX stomp.
    I’m using the Princeton model for clean and the Friedman model for edge of breakup and dirty.
    Headphone out and USB interface capabilities make it even more useful. It’s stereo and can run for 6 hours on batteries and you can check battery level. And has a looper!
    IR2 or Opus or similar products seem more useful if you’re only going after amp/cab sim and not an all-in-one solution.

    I would say the Line 6 is a great all in 1 for home use / personal travel. But the Boss IR-2 feels more professional, I can see integrating the IR-2 into an already great rig. And the Line 6 is the entire rig.

    • @JaredPitcher

      I agree, they're different beasts. I think the POD Express is offering a super compact all-in-one solution along the lines of the Zoom Multi-Stomp, while the IR-2 does just what it says, "Amp and Cabinet".
      The IR-2 is on my board, the POD doesn't interest me at all.

    • @BillySoundFarm

      I think you nailed it in a way... People who have other pedals that they don't want to let go of are going to prefer the IR2 because the pod express makes those pedals superfluous... But as far as a big paddle board that's already great, that means there's high end pedals on there and why would you pair that with a budget amp modeler at all? Why not a UA pedal or iridium?... Maybe the guy who usually uses a tube amp but he can sub it out for an IR2 if he's traveling or needs to have zero stage volume once in awhile? I guess that would make sense.

      I had the IR-2 and I think the POD Express sounds better. The biggest downside to me is that it’s mono in.
      Personally, the IR-2 benefits from IR loading because the stock IRs don’t sound great. I find the Line 6 stock cabs to be quite good in comparison. I typically use the stock cabs in the Stomp instead of IRs anymore.

      @@DGGriffinMusic could you tell me a little more about your rig? Why would you want stereo in?

    • @DGGriffinMusic
      @DGGriffinMusic 4 месяца назад +1

      @@BillySoundFarmyep! I mainly play at church and run stereo. I usually run my Iridium/Stomp at the end of the chain and run my stereo delays/verbs into the front end of the “amp”. Though I’m not married to that method and also will run my wets after the amp from time to time.

    I don't have either at this stage (I have a Moore RADAR for recording into my DAW) As most people have countless OD/Dist, EFX pedals already I don't see the EFX built in as a sweetener. What I would like to know is, are either of these pedals going to give a more realistic amp/cab sound than the RADAR?

  • @ThePlanarchist

    I think it's probably mainly a different market with maybe a little bit of overlap? I see the IR2 as something for someone who already has a pedalboard and maybe currently uses an amp and wants to try a modeller instead...the unit is as robust as all Boss pedals so can easily fit on a board.
    The POD Express is maybe more of a beginner or practise unit...at the moment for even the excellent Stomp you need mains supply (unless you get clever with an external battery pack). This you could easily take with you or use to practise with headphones anywhere and still have both an amp and cab and also some of the excellent HX effects?

    I'm a little confused on the appeal of the FX loop for anything apart from headphone practise. Couldn't you achieve the same thing just by putting post FX after the ir2 and pre FX before it, without the loop with the same result (except for the headphone monitoring part)?

    • @georgegray171
      @georgegray171 4 месяца назад

      Surely the effects loop would let you run modulation effects prior to the cab sim taking effect, more in line with a conventional amp effects loop.

  • @Jagermeistery

    The Pod Express would be a really helpful for non Amp performance like Chruch or light busking that need simple multieffect platform. But still, with IR, Desktop/PC App, and Send/Return, would be a perfect killer for other multieffects.

    Sounds pretty good and with a head phone possibility even better. However, anyone that has pedals and/or multi effect devices that have internal audio interfaces are they as good as an external one ( not a cream dela cream) but what you can buy from 150-200€? Since I’m traveling a lot due to work any good suggestions of smaller audio monitors that will take up little space in a luggage 🧳. Sorry that I’m a bit out of this video content but I will definitely consider a solution for being able to play with smaller gears when traveling. A pedal like this for instance, some effect pedals and an audio interface ( I believe Steinberg has some really travel friendly options), headphones and some cables 🤔

    It’s weird to me that people are comparing the IR-2 and the Pod Express at all, since they look like different product categories to me. The IR-2 is more a competitor to the Iridium and Simplifier, while the Pod Express is more of a competitor to something like a Tech 21 Fly Rig. I could see someone having both: The IR-2 to sit on a pedal board and the Pod Express for a more minimal, grab-and-go amp-less setup.

    • @JaredPitcher
      @JaredPitcher 4 месяца назад +1

      I agree 100%. Seems like apples and oranges. The POD Express to me competes with things like Zoom/NUX/Valeton multi-fx units, it's an all-in-one solution. The IR-2 is called the "Amp & Cabinet" for a reason, it has mulitple amps and loads IRs, and has much more in-depth connections for integrating into a pedalboard. They aren't the same category of pedal.

    Was going to get the boss IR to use with my hx effect when I don’t feel like bringing the full helix out. But held out. I had a feeling line 6 would execute it better. The pod express can integrate with your pedalboard or standalone due to it having the built in effects. Also has 21 foot switchable, programmable presets. Just got mine last night. Was super easy to use and get started with. And sounded pretty damn good. I think there’s definitely a market for both. But I feel the pod express is more feature rich and more options for application.

    The fact that we are comparing a boss pedal of that size to a modeler speaks volume. The pod express isn’t user friendly on the fly like you can with the boss. The boss you can use with a Jhs sweet tea or double barrel and have a full rig since the boss has ambience.

    I value your channel and input. This video (unlike the vast majority of your others) didn‘t really cover the terrain it was purporting to, for it featured only the IR2, with only a few thoughts on the Line6, which wasn‘t even in your hands. And at the end of the day, the Line6 is obviously not even intended for anyone like yourself, nor for replacing what the IR2 can do (see „effect loop“). Instead, the Line6 is clearly pursuing a different all-in-one kind of target user, e.g. buskers or beginners or folks just not wanting to buy a lot of gear in order to play. As for me, I had the IR2 and immediately returned it, for it colored my tone a lot on my Fender Jazzmaster tuned to standard C# (my normal tuning), showing a kind of upper-mid honk and lack of balance in the treble region. I couldn‘t get it to sound nice and actually like my guitar, which leads me to believe it‘s voiced more for standard tuning, and for strats and teles(?). At any rate, I had hoped to use it on my combined electric/acoustic pedalboard, and in that way, it not only colored the sound of my electric, but also (!) my acoustic, even when the IR was in bypass. That kinda makes sense, because it‘s buffered bypass, only. I did an A/B test with the unit in bypass, and with it removed from the signal chain. Huge difference!!! I really can‘t stand pedals that do that, and a great many do - especially digital ones. So I‘m hoping the Line6 might become my halfway decent all-in-one unit for my electric guitar, and otherwise politely not mess with my acoustic‘s sound when bypassed. We shall see… Came here hoping you‘d have the Line6 to demo. Went away a bit disappointed.

    For the gigging musician I’d like to hear from folks how much better these pedals are than the Joyo AMS (series), Nux Amp Academy, UA, etc…. Also, the idea of having so much “choice” within a given amp in a pedal is a draw back. In a live venue having a simple, easy to adjust pedal is way more important than having a dozen amp choices. As much as I like playing my Kat live too much of the tone is to accessible in a practical way in the heat of battle. The Joyo and Boss with its limited two presets are good that way. The UA Dream sounds pretty cool but not sure if it’s worth the cash. I wish they made a more “practical” version of the Dream instead of it trying to be a precise replica of the DR.

  • @alexforget

    Sad that pod express didn't just copy the Zoom G1Four design but with their dsp and sounds.
    It's not that complicated to use, cost very little to make and is so much more powerfull. I feel like Line6 main goal is to not canibalise market for their HX stomp that is expensive and very popular. Disrupt yourself or get disrupted by others.

    I'm an IR-2 user and there's nothing about the POD Express that would cause me to switch. IR loading is an essential feature for modern ampless setups, it's got two channel switching, and with the stereo loop the IR-2 is a no-brainer between the two for integrating into a board.
    The POD Express is a neat all-in-one compact practice rig, but it lacks the necessary features and tweakability to be a useful gigging or recording tool.
