  • Nisemonogatari has a reputation among some for being the most fanservice heavy, least interesting entry in the Monogatari franchise. However, from its themes of justice and imposters to the use of sexuality to drive its character dynamics, Nise has plenty of substance to it. While it may have a very different style than Bake, that doesn't mean it has any less substance. With that, today I dive into what makes Nisemonogatari a worthy successor in this hugely popular franchise.
    This video has major spoilers for Nise, so if you haven't completed the series, I'd advise you not to watch this yet.

      Kaiki and the other specialists are all defined by the value they place on the false vs the real. The mentor cares about how others answer but refuses to engage, her disciples each have an answer and reject the ideals of the other two, and Araragi is too young and naive to have a philosophical standpoint, instead taking things on a case by case basic. Superficially this makes him resemble his own mentor, Oshino, but Oshino is guided by an ethos for the most part, not personal entanglements.

    Kinda disappointed you didn't go more in depth in Kaiki's fake-ness. Bakemonogatari has taught us that the exorcists/specialists are very knowledgeable in mythology but are also quite religious. Kaiki, on the other hand, is very pragmatic, discounts the supernatural aspect of exorcising and believes that all supernatural afflictions, like curses, are brought on by the power of suggestion and/or self-hypnosis. This is clearly demonstrated when he "curses" Karen. He touches her just like a mentalist would hypnotize a member of his audience who is highly susceptible to suggestion.
    But is Kaiki really fake compared to the other specialists because he can't see spirits/gods/apparitions/oddities? In the real world a mentalist like Derren Brown who explains all of his acts of hypnosis with hard science is considered more real than the charlatans/faith healers/etc. who try to sell themselves as conduits of some spiritual energy or God.
    Of course, it all depends on where your beliefs lie as a viewer. If you're religious, you regard Oshino as real and Kaiki as fake. But if you're not religious, you would probably see Oshino as fake and Kaiki as real.

    • @MrRys

      Keep in mind that Kaiki is also a liar. His word that something is fake is meaningless. Oshino, him, and whatshername all have the same training. He even performs a truly supernatural act in the second season when he pulls literal godhood out of Nadeko. He seems to lean heavily into the fact that most supernatural things only manifest due to human mental states drawing in power (vampires being a big exception) and giving them form, so he goes directly to the human mind to deal with these issues.

    Definitely enjoyed the theme of Nisemonogatari. You should have covered the different perspectives of Oshini, Kagenui, and Kaiki on the idea of a the value of a fake and the real thing. Kaiki's seemingly fitting stance that the fake has more value, being a self-proclaimed conman himself, really brings the culminating climax of Tsukihi's role at the end while also hinting at Kaiki's true colors.

      @@MrSuperman957 I know thats months ago but your entry lacks context. Its said on the last episode that "The fake has far more greater value than the real thing because of it's deliberate attempt to become the real thing. Thus, it becoming more real than the real thing"
      I think this means that 'the way the fake does its best to become the real thing' is what makes it more real than the real thing.
      Anyway the FAKE is still FAKE. BUT, the actions the fake does are more real than the real thing. Thats because the way the Fake tries its best to surpass the Real is truer to itself. Plus, taking a look at the other side, the only thing going for the Real thing, is the fact that its real
      Conclusion: the fake can be more real than the real thing. So even if the fake is more real than the real thing, it cannot be the real thing because of course its a fake.
      A Fake that can exceed the Real in Realness.
      Edit: if your head can't comprehend then
      1. the 'real thing' is a noun(a name noun)

      its not fantasy its realistic lol you need to stop thinking of the technicality of the definition and understand the metaphor of it. Something that is fake tries to pass off or surpass the real thing that you might aswell consider it real. Kaiki is the perfect definition, he's a walking con artist, what do con artist do, Placebo the realness of their trade. He mastered his craft of imitating a spirit hunter that you might aswell consider him the real deal. He fooled araragi, the sisters, and even shinobu into thinking Karen was cursed even though it was just a hypnotism. Lets say, you were suffering a illness, and Kaiki cured you with "divine spirits" even though he simply performed a hypnotism on you that you believed. You might aswell consider him just as real as a actual spirit hunter.

      It essentially started as a personal doujin Nisio was writing for himself that he never intended to publish, but he got convinced to. I've heard it was because of the sucess of the Bakemonogatari anime. The thing is, I don't believe Nisio just said okay and released it unedited. I think he definitely sat down and injected some substance and meaning into it if it wasn't already there (if anyone's gonna write a doujin this thought provoking it's Nisio Isin.) If he did literally release an un-edited doujin as a novel then that makes Nise even more impressive to me, it just works as a show.

    What really interested me was Araragi's conviction to lie and deceive to his family if necessary, and thusly become the very "evil" that he was fighting against (personified by Kaiki) in Karen Bee's arc, because whatever the truth about Tsukihi's origin, she was his sister, and he her brother, and he would do anything to preserve that. It's in this stance that he takes that we can see how the fake can be stronger, or as Kaiki puts it, overwhelmingly more valuable, than the real. It's a conscious striving towards something that requires knowledge about it and passion for it to succeed. How can that be worth anything less than what is genuine, yet potentially ignorant of the details of it's own nature?
    There's an obvious counterpoint to this, but the questions this position raises are worth exploring, and we find that there is a spectrum between is and ought, and anyone worth their salt should be striving for something they are not quite yet.

    The OST (King of Strangeness) for the entrance of Shinobu into the scene in Nisemonogatari is in my view another interesting ornament to the "fakes" in the theme that basically Nisemonogatari is revolving around. The OST itself sounds oddly similar to double violin concerto by Bach and something close to Vivaldi that I initially thought it is actually some baroque composition from that era that I had not known of. Turns out it's actually original composition intended to mimic the baroque feel, to which I believe is actually pretty successful. It does somehow seemed through just the music it is trying to hint at a fake can resemble well the real thing and actually earns credit of its own.

    I loved your video! Nisemonogatari really is amazing and even its "fanservice" has an important purpose and function for the characters. However, as much as the artistic direction of the toothbrush scene is phenomenal and there are some small plot points that support the existence of that scene, as you well exemplified, I still don't understand some details: why were the brothers so excited? And what can we take from it that powers up his characterizations?
    Okay, throughout the work we see how Aragagi's sisters have a very intimate relationship with him, with some sexual tension between them here and there. However, I can't extract any great meaning from this toothbrush scene that makes it essential to the story. Which makes me believe that she is one of the few that doesn't have a great narrative function, but that it works, and it's no wonder that it became iconic due to the bizarreness and creativity of the situation.

    not questioning the thematics, the confrontation with Kaiki is utterly brilliant, and if Araragi wasn't so constantly doing weird shit to his sisters the final episode might have hit quite a lot better. the fanservice is less of an issue than Araragi's grossness being taken a bit too far.

    Nise is one of my favourite arcs in the entire show, if notbthe favourite.
    I love the light-heartedness, the brightness of its premise. It's mostly downtime for the characters, a vacation. We get to see Araragi simply having fun (and "fun") with the entire cast with no immediate life-threatening danger for most of the episodes.
    End even when there is danger, it's not a depressing self-destructive internal conflicts that we see in the other arcs. The conflict is mostly external, and victory is obtained through staying true to yourself than through changing yourself.
    I love how positive this story is and how bright.

    These things are quite easy to notice. Anyone miss it if they didn't try to comprehend it really. Well it is wrong to talk about another series. But this thing is also a major part in Emiya Shirou's character arc. He is literally a character who only save someone for his pleasure. He try to find a true villian. So he can save other. Whole fate stay night especially ubw is the realisation of shirou of this fact. This fact of fakes but accpting this fake in realistic way. He decided to guide them not save them. He decided accept both despair and hope, happiness & suffering in his path. He learns from it. A hero is just a scapegoat for others. A way to become victim. So that they can show their goodness. That's the resolution of shirou. Everything you said in this video and also main theme of nisemonogatari is the true realisation of shirou in the end.

  • @Leonlion0305
    @Leonlion0305 5 лет назад +4

    OMG at 6:17 you just gave me the idea that maybe all of them can be translated like that, here is what I have (in order of the novels) (SPOILER ALERT: little spoiler on Otorimonogatari):
    bakemono (monster) + monogatari (story) = monstory
    kizu (wounds, but i'll use hurts) + monogatari = hurtstory (her story) ya, her
    nisemono + monogatari = impostory like you have
    neko (cat(s)) + monogatari = catstory (cat's/cats' story)
    * Japanese don't have plural form (maybe adding -tachi is the closest) , it is mostly implied by having a unit that indicate multiple ones
    Hana (flower) + monogatari = flower story (this is the one I got stuck on
    otori (decoy) + monogatari (digress but this one is more interesting on the kanji for otori 囮 it is literally a bake(mono)(化け(物)) inside a box, could imply what Nadeko really is since she doesn't trust anyone but also, the decoy part could meant Kaiki using himself as decoy to deal with nadeko)
    other ones that can make combining words are
    tsukimonogatari = possesstory (possess+story)
    Orokamonogatari = foolstory (fool + story, maybe implied full story?)
    meh, I got tire, didn't look at the rest lol

    Great video! I agree completely. Nise is at least on par with Bake for me. I thought the themes and slow pacing really served it well and allowed for a more in-depth exploration of these characters.
    As for the toothbrush scene, I think that lends itself to the theme of fake vs real as well on some level. At the end of the day he’s just brushing her teeth, but the way it’s portrayed makes it feel like the most erotic thing in the world. And it definitely makes much more sense in context.

    Nise was fantastic thanks to both the killer music (which you can always count on from monogatari, but marshmallow justice and platinum disco are both fantastic and it has my second favorite ed in the series after Bake’s) and the incredible exploration of themes. Coming in blind other than the toothbrush and piggyback episodes, I only knew that the series was called “Fake story” and that Karen and Tsukihi were the stars. When I slowly began to realize all the different types of fakes the show provided, with Kaiki, the fire sisters, and tsukihi all being fakes in their own ways, I was surprised and thoroughly impressed. I still think Bake is the series peak, but Nise may be my second favorite even above second season as much as I like Tsubasa tiger, Nadeko Medusa, and Hitagi End, even if the fan service makes it hard to recommend to others and the episodes took forever to get to the sisters due to the strange first few episodes with Kanbaru, Hachikuji, and Nadeko in addition to the Senjougahara kidnapping plot (not saying any of these scenes were bad in the slightest, but they did slow the series down tremendously and affected the sisters plot very little).

    I learned that Kaiki is the best girl. Snadeko a sassy bihh, Hanekawa (meddlecat) an emergy draining person to love which moves past you. Fucking ruthless. Shinobu's and Araragi's relationship can be viewed in a way that either one falls. But which one continues longer without sacrificing other. Its a bittersweet story. Somehow knowing that either one cant continue.
    Oshino is in Araragis shadow, Araragi has no shadow. Is she behind him or in front of him. The shadow eats the host eventually.
    Shinobu's episode where she tells about her being worshipped as a god. It goes from right to left, leaving destruction behind. She goes through a lot, stays still, moves forward. Idk. Its obv, cant form a point. But I like Shinobu, Kaiki and Oshino Meme the most. What it makes me.

    People think I'm just a fanservice junky sometimes when I tell them that Nise was the part of the series that ACTUALLY got me really into the franchise. The truth is that it's all of THIS kind of stuff that got me into it. I'm into these characters as people. They are all amazing. Bake was great, and I appreciate it MUCH more on rewatches, but Nise is genuinely what sold me on their individual stories. And yeah, the fact that it was conveyed through a lot of very sexual content is a big part of that. Not because I'm a pervert(I won't deny that though), but because it is often the most intimate moments that convey the most about people. Nise is indeed quite sexy at times, but to me, sexuality is a good thing, and very important to all of these characters. And really to anyone going through puberty and adolescence.

  • @CaffeinatedTelescopes
    @CaffeinatedTelescopes 7 лет назад +2

    In my opinion, whether you like or dislike Nisemonogatari is directly related to what you do or don't appreciate about Bakemonogatari. Early on in Nise I was thoroughly enjoying it for the reasons you specified at the end of the video; the sense of nostalgia that came from returning to the world and characters that I grew to love in the first season. However, as it went on I began to tire of it simply because it wasn't delivering on the things I loved about Bake, especially moving into the second arc.
    Put simply, what made Bake such an unforgettable experience for me was its densely interconnected writing of (almost) every arc and the palpable emotional impact. That's not to say that Nise isn't well written, but from my perspective it's a lot more simplistic than what I came to expect from Nisioisin, which, again, is by no means a criticism, it just isn't what I wanted. Also, while Bake gave me chills, watery eyes and a sense of indescribable wonder in many scenes, Nise didn't really have any kind of emotional impact on me, so naturally I don't think as highly of it as its predecessor.
    On the other hand, if what you appreciate about the franchise is more along the lines of a combination of Shaft's fantastic visual storytelling/direction, Nisioisin's densely packed themes and ideas and its characterization, then this season will be every bit as impressive as Bake. I may be wrong, but from watching this video I get the impression that these are the things you appreciate about the series, which is totally cool. I'm actually really thankful that a perspective like yours exists, because I by no means think Nise is a bad entry to the franchise, and the fact that it's often characterized as such and memed so heavily that it's no longer taken seriously is a real shame. It's always interesting to see people who love and appreciate a series on the same level as yourself for completely different reasons.
    Keep up the good work, mate. Been keeping up with you on Twitter, looking forward to whatever you have planned for Tsubasa Cat.
