I love my C70 and I’ve rigged the hell out of it to fit my unique run n’ gun needs (using Kondor Blue cage and handle, SmallHD 702 Touch, USB-C charged SWIT BPA60 batteries). I’d immediately sell it for this, given it seems to check so many boxes, so long as third party companies can actually create useful accessories to make it a comfortable camera to walk around with all day at racing event or sitting on a coach’s chase boat. Things like: - 7” monitor w/ camera control like RED’s system you mentioned (I’d love to get rid of as many cables as possible, hopefully that USB-C can do it all) - hot-swappable V-mount plate - if vmount can’t charge the battery in camera, then a USB-C powered BPA30 battery to avoid the Canon charger (honestly the best thing about my SWIT batteries)
Totally agree with your wish list. Fortunately the V mount plate from the c500 mark ii will actually fit it perfectly. It also adds a d tap port to power accessories like a monitor or teradek. Ideally though we get a control monitor like the SmallHD/Red solution!
@@GriffinConway Hi, are you certain that the Canon EU-V2 Expansion Unit 2, which attaches to the C500 Mark II and offers a V-mount battery mount, will fit on the new C400 body? The C400 appears to have a smaller body size. Canon also produces a removable rear viewfinder for the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III models. It would be great if this accessory could be used with the new model as well. It makes good manufacturing sense for accessories from older models to be compatible.
There are 4 screws positioned at the back, similar to the design of the expansion units, which facilitate third-party development of V-mount batteries plugged into the four pins XLR. It would be fantastic if the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III accessories could be used as well! I wonder if the connecting ports can be seen. Rear viewfinder could be useful and I own and Vmount expansion unit.
Pretty cool hanging out with the cool kids! Honestly, I would have preferred seeing them put a DGO sensor in the C500. The resolution and RAW options are nice, but I feel like the lack of dynamic range (from what I've seen online) makes me feel less inclined to reach for a c400. I already own a C300iii and C70 which share the same DGO sensor and they're not quite dated in my opinion. My clients and producers are happy with them. The c400 lies in a pretty interesting spot with the c-series lineup. On paper I'd say it's worth exploring if someone doesn't already own a camera, but in my opinion I don't think c70, c300, or c500 owner/ops will miss out on much.
I was thinking a lot about this and I really want to test the DR in the real world and see if there’s any difference. I think this camera makes the most sense as a c70 owner who is looking for a good a cam with SDI and better form factor and who wants full frame. C300 mark iii def checks a lot of those boxes for you and I totally agree none of those cams become obsolete with this release. I think in a weird way they actually become more valuable.
I see this as a heavy C70 and that's a negative for me. I like C70 size and weight solely because it's incredible fast to shoot and to use sliders, gimbals, cranes, different mounts, compared to a much larger and heavier camera which complicates things considerably. And 4k is more than enough for anything, it's good enough for most highest end productions with the Alexa :) I'm looking forward to see an upgraded C70.
I’ve seen a lot of people compare it to the Burano and the FX6 but I feel like features and price wise this is much closer to the FX9. Obviously better than the FX6 and competitive to the Burano for a lot less money. It’s probably similar to what Sony is plotting for the FX9ii. However I think the FX9ii will still be like the shoulder cam form factor whereas this is one of the best recent implementations of a box camera we’ve seen. I think I would still probably prefer the Burano body but this is crazy close to that for like a third the price.
The FX9 is an ENG camera. Spec wise, it is close, but the C400 is really a market shifter. Unless Sony redesigns the FX9 to a box style, the C400 is closer to the Burano.
@@dsdddsd4543we I mean form factor wise yeah but that’s not the only criteria of a camera. The FX9 gets used for ENG mainly but people use it for commercials, docs, narratives, etc all the time.
This cameras is everything I’ve ever wanted in an A cam. I have a C200, R5C and C70 this camera is the best off all those combined. I won’t be getting one anytime soon but I love it. I’ll probably rent one when it comes out though.
Great addition imo. Full frame 6k, RF mount, Triple ISO and smaller than C500mkII. USB- C connections look like a smart choice. EF to PL adapter. This with the RF 24-105 f2.8 IS will be an awesome combo!
Good to get your take on it Griffin. This is basically the camera I have been waiting for since my original C100. However, since then Sony have really dominated and become the norm for so many people here in the UK, that I fear the C400 won't become widely used, and therefore might need some convincing of clients or production houses. Also, my C70 has worked so well for me (outside of the Sony situ) that I think it'll be hard to justify upgrading to the C400. I'll see how it gets on in the industry before thinking I NEED it. Totally agree with you about the triple native ISO's it'll be so useful, a lot of people don't seem to realise that it is hard to get a clean image from the FX6 and FX3 around the sensible range of 2000-6400, it is actually noisier than a lot of other cameras around that range.
Happy OG Komodo user since August, 2020. I came from the c200, loved the ergonomics but like many missed that middle ground codec. While the c300mkiii had my attention, I just didn't go for it, same with the c70 . The c400 however checks way more boxes than the Komodo X does for our projects and I think it's initial feedback has officially sold me. Very impressive camera and I can't wait to produce something with it!
I think these two cams would play well together in raw. I have used Komodo X along with c70 in raw and once they were graded it was hard to tell the difference.
@@GriffinConway I reckon so, you were also one of the big reasons I bought a used C70 last year! Have been enjoying the upgrade from my Panasonic GH cameras for corporate work
Nice chat Griffin, enjoyed your take on it. A complete 'no brainer' of a camera. So much to offer. If I was to nitpick, I'd love to have seen a slightly tighter rolling shutter speed and maybe some higher fps (even in crop). I like what you said about getting a larger third party monitor which will work nicely and the second clean feed out etc, really awesome little cam for a great price.

Yeah it really checks a lot the boxes for me. The only feature I was hoping to see, but we didn’t get, was open gate recording. Other than that, I’m pumped on it. Great meeting you at the event today btw!
@@GriffinConway If the sensor has a native 17:9 shape, what do you mean by expecting open gate recording? to be able to crop the 19:7 area into a more square shape? you can do that in post without difficulties. Or you mean the native sensor to have a more square shape by design? If I have to chose I prefer to sacrifice the extra pixel processing that an open gate squared sensor demands (on top and bottom) and increase the sensor read-out speed on a 17:9 area (the format in which most of us shoot 90% of the time).
From the looks of it the have built on the R3 chip. The CVP video really covers the DR especially the 3 step native ISO the performance of which is great. It might not have the bells and whistles of the other cameras specs wise but like other Canon Cameras it's going to be a work horse for sure.
Pre-order placed. Just about everything I was personally looking for and cheaper than expected. Only two things I still want, and who knows they might be possible, is 3:2 open gate and 1.5x anamorphic desqueeze.
I don't think the sensor is technically 3:2 I think it's a slightly different size but ya, I agree whatever the ratio full open gate and also a 4:3 sensor mode would be great. I haven't talked to anyone but I wouldn't be surprised if they add a 1.5x desqueeze in firmware
Great Video as always! And this feels like the camera I have been waiting for. Unfortunately I switched over to RED and I'm not sure if this is enough to bring me back. The thing you mentioned with the USB-C is something I would be excited about. Getting a 7" with camera control would be a gamechanger!
Hey Damien! Ya I really hope someone makes a good 7” camera control monitor via usb c. I think for Komodo X owners it’s really a different camera and target audience. Clients who want red, will want red. But I think there’s probably lot of owner / ops who miss internal ND, good audio built straight in, and having all in the IO to send clean feed for client / overlays to their monitor.
Hi Griffin - great overview again! I have kind of niche -question. I own the C70 and the R6ii and do TV run and gun work. The R6ii has great downsampled lowlight and a great looking but only 8bit 4k 50p. I got the R5ii now for the 4k 100p and better codecs but I shocked about the lowlight capabilities. If you had the C70 and R6ii and the chance to replace one of them - would you get the C400 for the C70 or the R5ii for the R6ii?
Hey Griffing, thanks for the info. I know you have a lot of experience with the C70. I would like to ask you two questions if you don’t mind: Speaking solely about dynamic range, how does the C400 stacked sensor compares to the C70s DGO sensor? Do you think this would replace the C70 or do you see a C70 Mark II coming in the future. Bonus question: Would you buy the C400 to replace your C70s? Thanks a lot for your content, it led me to get the C70 and it was a money maker for me for the last couple of years.
Awesome glad to hear that! Thanks for watching. I think the c70 will have a mark ii in the future. It was a popular camera and I can imagine a version ii coming out that’s priced lower than the c400 with a few less features. On the topic of dynamic range, I haven’t personally tested them but I will test them side by side in real world conditions and see what is noticeable. From the early tests I’ve seen, it seems they are very close in dynamic range, perhaps with a slight edge to the c70. For high iso I think the c400 will be much better. I plan to keep my c70’s and the c400 will likely replace my c500 mark ii.
@@GriffinConway Thank you so much for replying. I love the C70, for my documentary work where I don’t usually have the luxury or time to light scenes DR is important. But that triple ISO Full Frame PL mount converter And DPAF That stuff has me drooling about this. Thank you again for your content looking forward to your future test in the field.
Thanks as always for sharing your insights. Just the fact that it is full frame makes it an instant buy for me. I’m assuming its image quality is going to be as good as or better than what I get out of my C70 and that’s exciting. But what I’m most curious to see is how it performs in low light which is really the only scenario I get nervous with when I’m shooting on my Canons. Usually I have a Sony FX6/A7S3 on hand as a low light 2nd cam and if that could go away, I’d be thrilled.
Ya I agree the proper full frame is going to be great. No soeedbooster to worry about. I noticed around 3200 is pretty much my limit on the c70. The c400 looks to handle high ISO’s much better from what I’ve seen so far.
It canon made the c70 mkll instead of this with a full frame sensor and a few correction to the little issues is has. That camera would sell like hot bread.
I put in a pre-order to save my place in line, not sure if it’s the right cam for me yet, but there’s a lot to like here and my main cam is a c70… The main get for me is a more set ready professional cam that has a lot of function and flexibility. But, I recently changed my day to day c70 over to cinema glass with a lidar RS mod for when I need auto focus and the lidar RS is transcendent when compared to any canon auto focus system I’ve used so far. And shooting with cinema glass on the c70 is pretty awesome since you get that natural softer look with a lot of added character from the glass + c70 combo… Honestly I’m pretty torn, they have hinted at a c70 mk2 in the future, but now that this is out they’ll most likely keep the c70 line as a super 35. Things I wanted in a mk2: 1. Slightly bigger body for easier rigging 2. FF DGO sensor 3. C Fast media 4. Full sized XLR on body 5. SDI out 6. A decent 120 option That’s really about it for the short list and the c400 has most of these with some compromises.
I’m also a happy C70 user who is using cinema glass and it’s just beautiful the footage coming out of that combo. I don’t think the C70 Mark II will be FF. My wishlist for the C70: DGO tech for more frames rates including 120 fps. Maybe 240 fps in S16 mode. Second gen DGO sensor? PL mount converter too I see the C70 line to be DR and S35 focused while the C400 primarily focused in Speed, FF, broadcasting and Low Light. Let’s see what happens.
Man, what's up Griffin! I'm so excited about this camera, that's cool you got to test it out! 6K, full frame, triple native ISO, better AF compared to C70 and under $10k! I think I will be getting one. Someone commented on a different video that the image feels more sharp and does not have a pleasing soft Canon C70 look, I wonder if you noticed anything like that?
What's up Roman! Hope you are good bro! I haven't checked out any source footage on a big monitor for myself so I can't comment on that. I will get one as soon as I can and do a bunch of testing and comparisons on the channel!
This camera is almost there. The lack of proper sized XLRs is kind of a deal breaker for me. The whole point of a camera like this is to hit the ground running. Having adapters is really a pain in the ass and one of those things that could really ruin a shoot. It is like when Apple had the MacBook Pro and you needed to carry around all those silly adapters.
What I am curious about is qualitative difference between the DGO sensor in C-70 & this sensor? The low light capability is very appealing if visually it is comparable to DGO.
Things you did not mention: No DGO sensor on the C400! This is likely due to it being full frame. But based on early tests, this camera does not appear to perform as well in the highlights as the C300 III and C70, and might even have slightly lower dynamic range. Check CVP’s dynamic range test. The highlight rolloff does appear to be harsher on the C400. Battery power! The C300 III and C70 will both last much longer than the C400 which will more than likely require V-Mounts, much like the C500 II. The C300 and C70 can run forever on small BPU batteries. No EVF! The omission of the EVF is huge to me coming from a C300 III and a C500 II. Canon’s on-camera LCD is not bright enough to be seen in mid-day, noon sun. I really wish Canon would have at least given us the option of bolting an EVF onto the back of the camera like they did with the C300 III and C500 II. The USB monitor is cool, but Canon has not confirmed that you will be able to utilize 3rd party monitors via that port!
Good notes, thanks for the comment. You are correct, no DGO. Canon claims 16 stops on this camera, the c70, and c300 mark iii. They claim 15 stops on the c500 mark ii. The only ones who have done proper side by side testing that I have seen is the video I reccomended, CVP. My guess is in the real world there will be minimal difference. For battery power, C70 draws 14w, c300 mark iii is 31w, and c400 is 31w as well. So c70 will definitely have the edge for low power draw. Canon told me 3rd party USB-C evf's will be available, as well as SDI evf's. I'm not sure about rear evf's though. Canon told me it will definitely be able to work with 3rd party monitors. That was one of the things they were proud of. Thanks for the comment DC!
C400 sensor seems to have a lot of similarities in specs to the r3. I’m wondering if they just gave it a more powerful chipset to increase DR, but worked from the r3 sensor.
It would be good to see a review of the controls. One punch for HFR? One punch for digital zoom? What modes preroll. The only actual controls we care about. HFR and sound?
Great review. I have the C70 and love it. I think the full frame aspect of the C400 is the best part. Not sure it's a good camera for my business. So far, when I am scouting or shooting B roll, I am alone and the C70 does a good job. On the full crew days, the DP is shooting Sony Venice 1, Sony Venice 2, or Arri Alexa Mini. For whatever reason the high end DPs are not into Canon at all. But it looks great in the finished cuts so the mystique thing only gets you so far. Curious about your favorite set of lenses for the C70. So far I only have Canon RF glass.
Hey would love to get my 2nd EOS camera either c300 mk3 or c400 mk3 as I have my Eos R5c as my new A-cam. Realistically the R5c trumps the c70 in quality and resolution since it is newer and comes with 8K Full frame, internal raw, and 4k120 no crop in XF-AVC All intra but looses all the ergonomics of the c70, c300 and c500. In my opinion, it seems like top to bottom in the Eos lineup (in terms of quality/ frame rate / codex) now it is, c400, r5c, c500, c300, c70. But main question I would like to know is... is the Clog 2 noisy in the c70 and c300 mk3 like in the R5c?
It has a lot of plusses. But for daily usage it misses the one thing that makes a huge difference and it has not have that : The variable ND which Sony offers at a lower price point. I think most of you underestimate the convenience the variable ND gives..
When you were at Canon did they tease what video specs the R1 will have? They sure have intimated that it will be a huge leap in not only still photos (obviously) but also video. You wonder how much they'll take from the R5C and put into the R1 for real hybrid shooters.
Nice review. I am annoyed that they haven't given us 4:3 Anamorphic again. I suspect they might allow it in future firmware. But this camera is definitely a step in the right direction!
Surprised to hear the you loose some of the character when shooting with your Ironglass lenses on the c70. Does your RF to PL adapter have a speedbooster? If it does, I would have thought the lens would show up the exact same as a full frame sensor e.g. the edge fall off, bokeh etc
What I mean was they are full frame PL mount lenses. When I have to use the RF to PL adapter I don't get the "full frame look" since it only uses the center portion of the lenses. Still looks good but it turns the 58mm in to a 87mm field of view.
Thanks for making this video. I was hoping to get an expert opinion on this camera vs the C70. Looking forward to you sharing more info when you get more time with one !
There are no advantages of this camera except for the triple basic ISO! Why is there one slot for Express cards, so forget about the copy and there is no DGO, even the dynamic range is below C70 and I wanted to add one note why 4k 120p in S35 format is strange to me!
Ihave a c200 and a r6 - the c400 is everything I dreamed of. But recently ive just felt the c200 to be a lump and the r6 to be small and nimble. I dunno if the c400 is 'it' especially as the loupe doesnt seem really sorted. Ive not seen a photo of anyone looking comfortable with it. Just people waving it around like a phone! I think it will need a shoulder rig just like my fs7 c200 and all the others
I have been shooting Blackmagic, but for commercial work the name “Ursa” does not carry any weight. So the Ursa’s are gone and though I have access to FX6 bodies when needed, I had not purchased any for my own kit in hope that Sony would release a next gen FX6 or FX9. Well looks like Canon has jumped ahead and I have put in a preorder for the C400. My biggest disappointment is the single CFExpress slot. Though there’s some consolation in having simultaneous proxies to the SD slot. I had a CFExpress card go bad on me recently. Thankfully this was during testing prior to a shoot so nothing was lost, but it was a reminder that solo card recording will always be a tightrope walk and client work can get lost when you least expect. Anyway, C400 it is for me going forward.
Nice I am sure you will love the c400. One thing to note, it can record full 4k 10 bit 422 files to the sd card simultaneously while recording raw to the cf express, so that is a really solid backup!
@@GriffinConway 10-bit 422 is a lot more substantial than a proxy. That’s for sure. Overall it’s a lot of camera for the money and who else will go to the trouble of engineering a triple native sensor? I’ve wanted the 12800 for those times when the light runs out and now I’ll have a camera tailored for the in-between conditions as well. That’s a lot of flexibility.
Sounds really really good man! Is it true that the 4k 120 is only in 35mm crop mode? Does that bother you? Good to see you on here again and looking forward to see more on the c400!
@@GriffinConway ah nice, that‘s what i thought. Really sounds like a great workhorse hey! I probably would not shoot RAW in most cases anyway, or what do you think from experience?
I wonder if it will be cleaner at full stops like the C500? In a perfect world it would take 2 of the same cards. But I’d love to have one. Maybe a few years from now in the used market. It’s a bit out of my reach for my stuff.
I was thinking that as well but you can record most of the codecs to the sd card which can be good if you ever forget your CF express reader 😅 ask me how I know this lol
Thanks Griffin. Camera looks awesome… I think we’ll wait for the next DGO or TGO? Gain sensor. Hard to give up DR and I don’t typically need crazy good low light
Ya I’m curious to test the cams in the real world and see if there’s any dynamic range differences I notice. From what I saw from CVP they all looked close and probably look great.
will you get a pre prod model to review before they ship? if so, any idea when? 😅 I'm australian and our financial year ends 1st of july, considering making an investment but want to see some more in depth reviews
hi griffin I'm c70 user do you see a difference in dr by dgo and this triple Iso. i would like add beside my c70 this camera but for this price tag i have also a red komodo x or maybe with the all in one like the ronin 4d 8k ? ps: i recommend the griffin's luts!
Thank you for the recommendation! I think those are all good camera options, but the ronin 4d means your lose audio capabilities and don’t have the option to get rid of the “gimbal look” if you don’t want it for your shot. I think this is the perfect c70 upgrade. I will get the camera in for testing and compare it with c70/c500 mark ii and see how the dynamic range looks. Canon says it’s 16 stops which is the same as the c70 and more than the c500 mark ii
Why does not one else notice the lack of EVF? I can't imagine shooting without one. Of course I have a third party one but extra weight and batteries - rather it built in too!
As a c70 owner and from what I seen so far, the triple iso isn’t better than the DGO And I feel Full frame is overrated. If super35 is good enough for Arri35. It’s good enough for me. I’ll wait for the c70 mk2 or another canon camera.
Most of the time the canon cinema line with clog 2 all matches pretty well. I will test it side by side soon as I can get a loaner unit. I think this would be a really solid upgrade from the c300 mark iii.
@@GriffinConway please compare it to the C300 when you have a chance! I was 100% about to purchase a C300 then Canon announced this and I've been on the fence because they are both basically the same price.
The c300mkiii/c500mkii is the most Ergonomical camera in that price range. With the most features I would argue. I love the way these cameras feel bare or rigged out. The c70 is cool for what it is but the placement of Card slots/Timecode and audio is bonkers it was clearly an afterthought.
Come on Griffie.. you said to check out CVP’s video and there they say it does not have more DR and latitude but here you say it’s got more. What’s good??
I never said that the camera has more DR and lattitude. I didn't talk much about image quality because I haven't tested it and have no source footage of my own. CVP would be a better resource to comment about that because they did lots of great testing and they are a very reliable source.
@@GriffinConway whole lot of specs match between the two to the extent that even small features like the auto-flicker adjustment raise an eyebrow. Wish the r3 had clog 2
I guess camera makers just assume we all have 2k NIT monitors now that we will plug in. I am guessing this monitor is not bright enough for shooting in direct sunlight.
I think the smaller screen is perfectly usable indoors or outdoors with a sun hood. I've used a similar one on my c500 mark ii with a sun hood and it was fine. That said, I do prefer my larger 7" 1800 nit smallhd monitor most of the time.
Rooting for Canon but just not seeing this being a very big success for them. It'll be a niche thing, at best. At $8,000 you're in the territory of a rigged out FX6 or Komodo X with global shutter. Yes it's full frame, but the minute you get into any high frame rates (as I understand it) you lose the raw abilities? Or in other words you can't shoot RAW at high frame rates.I guess if you're fully bought into the Canon eco system it's an upgrade. But hard to see someone being swayed over from a different brand here. But that's just one opinion.
Agree.. it’s nice but it should be $6500. I want to see them do FF 6k120 and 4k 240 in a $8-10k body, with ibis and an ND that can go up in better increments. Then we’d be cooking.
I think it's a solid option and I would have guessed slightly higher pricing. Komodo and Komodo X are great in the commercial and narrative space, but for doc/corporate/run n gun I think this is a much stronger option with full frame/AF/Audio/ND's etc. I think Komodo / Komodo X owner ops will stick with their cams for sure though.
@@GriffinConway you’re right my guy, for those applications I’ll keep my c70. I just found out that dual pixel doesn’t work in 120fps =(. Maybe they’ll address this in firmware like they did with the c70.
C80 is way oversharpening the image, it is less cinematic than C70. And C80 has also less DR than C70. At any rate, I still prefer the Lumix S1H as it is much better in every way, except autofocus.
For me personally, it's a pass. The ergonomics aren't to my taste (I prefer compact and light, the smaller the better). And in the sample footage I've seen so far, there really hasn't been much of a jump in image quality compared to a C70, though I'd be open to being proven wrong by a side-by-side comparison. But the odds are that, in a year's time, Canon will bring out the same sensor, drop it in smaller body with fewer inputs and outputs, and halve the price. Then, sure, I might think about upgrading...
I don't think it's positioned as a c70 upgrade. I actually thought the price was great. Compared to everything else out there on the market that's 6k 60p full frame and has internal raw it's a pretty good bargain.
@@GriffinConway Lost an CFexpress slot, AES/EBU, expansion units, row of buttons, full size XLR(huge one for me), swappable lens mounts. While having the same or lower dynamic range. I hardly care about resolution above 4K and don't care at all about sensor size. AF improvement seems nice, but lock-on on the c70/c300 was already great. Not a fan of using adapters, and there is little exciting RF glass outside of stills lenses. The PL and locking EF mounts swappable is fantastic. 4 years after the C300III, it's seems very meager. Exciting specs would been 32bit audio recording, electronic stepless ND system with auto function, IR-mode(cool feature on EVA1), IBIS , new handle with a zoom rocker or the jackpot.. ARRI 35 level DR haha. Even some remote/wireless control would be cool, but it's again very Canon-like closed off system. I heard they are bringing back interval recording, that was a strange omission from last gen. Maybe also raw output over SDI, like the C300II but then never any camera after that.
If you want to support the channel and are Pre-Ordering the Canon C400, use this link: bhpho.to/3xdkizG
does it record gyro data for processing in gyroflow in post?
I love my C70 and I’ve rigged the hell out of it to fit my unique run n’ gun needs (using Kondor Blue cage and handle, SmallHD 702 Touch, USB-C charged SWIT BPA60 batteries).
I’d immediately sell it for this, given it seems to check so many boxes, so long as third party companies can actually create useful accessories to make it a comfortable camera to walk around with all day at racing event or sitting on a coach’s chase boat.
Things like:
- 7” monitor w/ camera control like RED’s system you mentioned (I’d love to get rid of as many cables as possible, hopefully that USB-C can do it all)
- hot-swappable V-mount plate
- if vmount can’t charge the battery in camera, then a USB-C powered BPA30 battery to avoid the Canon charger (honestly the best thing about my SWIT batteries)
Sorry to clarify I meant the full frame camera co plate for the c500 mark ii or the core plate could work, not the euv2
Rear viewfinder could be useful and I own and Vmount expansion unit.
my c70 has been my A cam for so long...it will be weird to have something that pushes it down to the B cam! but i'm excited!
Griffin’s video on the C400 was the only video I wanted to get my insights from 💪🏾
Thanks Ron!
Mate, i have no idea how you do it, but every video of yours starts with a big smile on your face, you are such a legend!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the comment!
What excites me most about the c400 is the low light capabilities.
Ya same! That was an area the c70 struggled so I think this will be a nice upgrade.
C70 is still a great option!
Absolutely nothing to do with the C400, but we NEED a breakdown of your gear shelves! They look awesome!
Hahah let me clean my messy office first and then I’ll do a tour 😅😂
Those look like Home Depot heavy duty garage shelves. You added tube lights and pegboard? Indulge us!
That's exactly how I see it. Most people are comparing it to the FX6 and the Burano, but it seems like it's Canon's answer to the FX9.
The FX9 gets used for ENG mainly but people use it for commercials, docs, narratives, etc all the time.
i think Sony brings most likely a fx9 ii with the global shutter 6k sensor and instantanous AF to compete with this camera
This cameras is everything I’ve ever wanted in an A cam. I have a C200, R5C and C70 this camera is the best off all those combined. I won’t be getting one anytime soon but I love it. I’ll probably rent one when it comes out though.
Nice Kevin! I think it will be great as an A cam and you will feel right at home with the menus. It’s pretty much the same menu setup as the c200/c70
Great addition imo. Full frame 6k, RF mount, Triple ISO and smaller than C500mkII. USB- C connections look like a smart choice. EF to PL adapter. This with the RF 24-105 f2.8 IS will be an awesome combo!
Right on. Getting one for sure!! It's got all the boxes that are important to me. Smokin!!
awesome Scottie! Stoked for you brother!
There we go, was hoping I’d see you do a video on this thing
Thanks Benj! Just watched your Fuji X100VI video yesterday 👀
I have an R5C and a C70 and I am pumped for this one!
Ya I think this will fit right in with those cameras as the perfect A cam
@@GriffinConway Definitely, Time to save some money 😂
Happy OG Komodo user since August, 2020. I came from the c200, loved the ergonomics but like many missed that middle ground codec. While the c300mkiii had my attention, I just didn't go for it, same with the c70 .
The c400 however checks way more boxes than the Komodo X does for our projects and I think it's initial feedback has officially sold me. Very impressive camera and I can't wait to produce something with it!
I think these two cams would play well together in raw. I have used Komodo X along with c70 in raw and once they were graded it was hard to tell the difference.
This as a A cam and the C70 as a B-cam is the perfect combo. I will probably rent one to go along with my C70 on bigger projects
Nice! I think it will be the perfect A cam to the C70 as well
@@GriffinConway I reckon so, you were also one of the big reasons I bought a used C70 last year!
I would have love to see open gate as well
Great meeting you too! Also ya I agree it would be great to have open gate
As soon as this was announced I came to your channel first! Glad to see canon invited you too!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you checking out the video!
It has an 8ms readout in super 35 mode, and around 12sec in full frame 6k, at least that’s what I’m reading.
From the looks of it the have built on the R3 chip. The CVP video really covers the DR especially the 3 step native ISO the performance of which is great. It might not have the bells and whistles of the other cameras specs wise but like other Canon Cameras it's going to be a work horse for sure.
Great video dude! I think this is going to be such a beast camera and probably the best doc and corporate camera to date. Thanks for the shoutout too!
I agree! I think it will be an amazing workhorse cam for sure.
Really nice video, with all the info from a real user. So many video's are made by people that can not make a propper video. Thanks for that!
Great to have you back man! Stoked for the new videos!!🤘🏼
Thanks Matt! I appreciate you watching bro! And hope you are doing well!
My C70 has earned nice vacation as my Bcam.. so stoked about the C400.
Great video, as always!
Nice! C70 should be a perfect B cam for the c400
I would like to ask you two questions if you don’t mind:
Speaking solely about dynamic range, how does the C400 stacked sensor compares to the C70s DGO sensor?
Do you think this would replace the C70 or do you see a C70 Mark II coming in the future.
Bonus question:
Would you buy the C400 to replace your C70s?
But that triple ISO
Full Frame
PL mount converter
And DPAF
That stuff has me drooling about this.
Thank you again for your content looking forward to your future test in the field.
Nice to see a review (first thoughts) from a real Canon user. Let's see what Canon will bring for event people.
Best cam of 2024. Smokes the Komodo x and burano in every way possible. I can’t wait to see it in your hands
Looking forward to testing it myself as well!
I put in a pre-order to save my place in line, not sure if it’s the right cam for me yet, but there’s a lot to like here and my main cam is a c70…
The main get for me is a more set ready professional cam that has a lot of function and flexibility. But, I recently changed my day to day c70 over to cinema glass with a lidar RS mod for when I need auto focus and the lidar RS is transcendent when compared to any canon auto focus system I’ve used so far. And shooting with cinema glass on the c70 is pretty awesome since you get that natural softer look with a lot of added character from the glass + c70 combo…
Honestly I’m pretty torn, they have hinted at a c70 mk2 in the future, but now that this is out they’ll most likely keep the c70 line as a super 35.
Things I wanted in a mk2:
1. Slightly bigger body for easier rigging
2. FF DGO sensor
3. C Fast media
4. Full sized XLR on body
5. SDI out
6. A decent 120 option
That’s really about it for the short list and the c400 has most of these with some compromises.
I’m also a happy C70 user who is using cinema glass and it’s just beautiful the footage coming out of that combo.
I don’t think the C70 Mark II will be FF.
My wishlist for the C70:
DGO tech for more frames rates including 120 fps.
Maybe 240 fps in S16 mode.
Second gen DGO sensor?
PL mount converter too
I see the C70 line to be DR and S35 focused while the C400 primarily focused in Speed, FF, broadcasting and Low Light.
It is like when Apple had the MacBook Pro and you needed to carry around all those silly adapters.
instead of an XLR cable you can use a mini XLR to XLR. I really don't think this is a deal breaker
What I am curious about is qualitative difference between the DGO sensor in C-70 & this sensor? The low light capability is very appealing if visually it is comparable to DGO.
Things you did not mention:
No DGO sensor on the C400!
I own the R3 and will test it against the c400 soon as I can!
It would be good to see a review of the controls. One punch for HFR? One punch for digital zoom? What modes preroll. The only actual controls we care about. HFR and sound?
Good notes I’ll make sure to cover that in my review once I actually use it on a few jobs
Griffin, we missed your face! Looks like a sweet camera🎉
Thanks Danny! Missed making videos. I will be back soon! I've got a lot more content scheduled to be released soon.
I only have rf glass as well but thinking of buying some cine lenses. Looking at the nisi ones.
I’ve heard the dynamic range is actually worse than the c70 and is really closer to like 13.5 stops, what are your thoughts on that?
It has a lot of plusses. But for daily usage it misses the one thing that makes a huge difference and it has not have that : The variable ND which Sony offers at a lower price point. I think most of you underestimate the convenience the variable ND gives..
Terrific overview and perspective! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thanks Carlos! Enjoyed watching your pre release live stream!
When you were at Canon did they tease what video specs the R1 will have? They sure have intimated that it will be a huge leap in not only still photos (obviously) but also video. You wonder how much they'll take from the R5C and put into the R1 for real hybrid shooters.
I wish! haha but no I didn't hear anything. I am on the wait list and plan to pre order that one soon as it's available.
your car shots are really awsome!
Thank you!
Glad to get your opinion on this given you use the C70 heavily
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you liked it!
There are no advantages of this camera except for the triple basic ISO! Why is there one slot for Express cards, so forget about the copy and there is no DGO, even the dynamic range is below C70 and I wanted to add one note why 4k 120p in S35 format is strange to me!
You lose the DGO sensor when you shoot in 120 FPS on C70. So you do get one advantage here.
I like to see someone live stream with this behemoth of a camera.
Hope we can use the black magic usb c viewfinder. Biggest gripe with my C70 is trying to get a viewfinder on it.
Ya I think it will most likely work. Excited to see myself as well.
Great video man! Missed the Griffin Conway RUclips Channel :)
Thanks Ryan! Hope you are doing well bro!
Sounds really really good man! Is it true that the 4k 120 is only in 35mm crop mode? Does that bother you?
Good to see you on here again and looking forward to see more on the c400!
4k 120 is cropped in raw, but you can shoot full frame 4k 120p in XF-AVC. Good to see you too bro!
@@GriffinConway ah nice, that‘s what i thought. Really sounds like a great workhorse hey! I probably would not shoot RAW in most cases anyway, or what do you think from experience?
I'm good with my C300mk3. C400 is nice but for now i'm good.
Griffin's back!
Lol I take way too long to make videos 😂 I have a few more coming soon!
Honestly, what does it for me is the full frame and better low light
Thanks Griffin. Camera looks awesome… I think we’ll wait for the next DGO or TGO? Gain sensor. Hard to give up DR and I don’t typically need crazy good low light
Ya I’m curious to test the cams in the real world and see if there’s any dynamic range differences I notice. From what I saw from CVP they all looked close and probably look great.
@@GriffinConway looking forward to your content buddy
what did they say about the usable dynamic range compared to the C70. I read that it is better than the c500 but the c70 is better.
I’ve heard the same. Similar to c70 with 16 claimed stops, and slightly more than the c500
@@GriffinConway Thats good to hear. The C400 looks appealing but I know there is a c500 type cam behind closed doors
I’ve seen side by sides vs the C70 & that DGO still looks better
will you get a pre prod model to review before they ship? if so, any idea when? 😅 I'm australian and our financial year ends 1st of july, considering making an investment but want to see some more in depth reviews
I have asked Canon and they said I should be able to get one to test out for a bit. Hoping it’s soon!
hi griffin I'm c70 user do you see a difference in dr by dgo and this triple Iso. i would like add beside my c70 this camera but for this price tag i have also a red komodo x or maybe with the all in one like the ronin 4d 8k ?
ps: i recommend the griffin's luts!
Hope that it will be really 8ms on the readout Speer. Then it is even more fantastic camera!
Agreed!
but it has less dynamic range than the c300iii, hasnt it
log2 is great but wish this has 16 bit capabilities
As impressive as this is for the price! I wish they could create a more affordable cinema camera to compete with the fx30/Gh7/XH2S market
What you do think about "*price subject to change" ....
I imagine they put that on all cams but no idea tbh
Can you already estimate how the battery life compares to the c70 and c500 ii?
I think twice the battery life from the c500 mark ii based on power draw, so pretty good!
C400 Got Griffin out of hiding!
😂 I'm back! More videos to come soon
Did it have a EVF?
Why does not one else notice the lack of EVF? I can't imagine shooting without one. Of course I have a third party one but extra weight and batteries - rather it built in too!
Imo makes the price of the Burano ridiculous. It’s a nice camera for sure but it would have been nice to see open gate.
Agreed!
Do you secretly work for R&D at Canon? Good video and keep creating.
Haha I wish!
As a c70 owner and from what I seen so far, the triple iso isn’t better than the DGO And I feel Full frame is overrated. If super35 is good enough for Arri35. It’s good enough for me. I’ll wait for the c70 mk2 or another canon camera.
Canon has finally stepped into the arena with Sony. We may have a new KING OF LOW LIGHT‼️
Just need to see how well the image matches the C70 DGO sensor i guess. I don't mind selling my c300mkiii for this.
Great Video Griffin. Now I see why you couldn’t answer the phone earlier lol. You best believe I’ll in your ear asking questions😂.
Haha you know it bro!
Ya I agree I like the form factor on the bigger cams for sure. Stoked for this cam to be out in the wild soon so I can test it.
Are you using your C70 lut on this R3 footage?
yes I do a lot actually
Come on Griffie.. you said to check out CVP’s video and there they say it does not have more DR and latitude but here you say it’s got more. What’s good??
I never said that the camera has more DR and lattitude. I didn't talk much about image quality because I haven't tested it and have no source footage of my own. CVP would be a better resource to comment about that because they did lots of great testing and they are a very reliable source.
I feel like this will match my r3 suspiciously well?
I think it will too! I have an R3 so I will test it side by side soon as I can get a loaner c400
@@GriffinConway whole lot of specs match between the two to the extent that even small features like the auto-flicker adjustment raise an eyebrow. Wish the r3 had clog 2
Seems like a C500 mk2 with an RF mount. Not bad, decent price, but not enough to tempt me away from C70s.
C70 is still a great camera! I will continue to use mine for sure
I just noticed we were at the same event! Haha.
No DGO sensor no buy and I have to see I'm not that impressed by the sample images I've seen so far..
C80 is way oversharpening the image, it is less cinematic than C70. And C80 has also less DR than C70. At any rate, I still prefer the Lumix S1H as it is much better in every way, except autofocus.
Please nudge Canon to add vehicles and wildlife.
Other than that, this camera is pretty much perfect.
I'm looking forward to testing the C70 side by side with the c400, but either way the c70 is still an amazing camera.
It's a great camera, but the Codex's it puts out are rubbish.
If it was a C70 upgrade, the upgrade on the price is laughable and you know it.
I don't think it's positioned as a c70 upgrade. I actually thought the price was great. Compared to everything else out there on the market that's 6k 60p full frame and has internal raw it's a pretty good bargain.
Your video had some weird background noise.
Seems like a C300III downgrade, besides the larger sensor and resolution.
Higher resolution, better low light, better autofocus, way more lens options with RF mount. C300 mark iii is still a great camera though!
