Vs. The Goonies!!!! Wow, what an AWESOME find Joe!!! I remember seeing it on Tabletop once or twice, but I'd totally buy the full size cabinet... If I only had an arcade room!!
That is one of my dream arcade cabinets. I only got to play it a few times and it lead me and my dad to try and find the game for the NES. For years we would ask every place that sold NES cartridges if they had the game or could order it. Of course the answer was always no. One managed to sell us Goonies 2 which turned out to be a disappointment. It wasn't until years later that a buddy at work gave me a CDR filled with roms and an emulator that I got to play it again. That sent me searching for a reason why I couldn't find it when I was a kid. It was that search that lead me to finding out it only got a home release in Japan on the famicom. So many good memories centered around that arcade cabinet and hunting for that game.
There was one of these in the M&W Supermarket in Boise Idaho around 1987. I could play the entire game on 1 quarter. I would wake up early so I could beat it before going to Junior High.
This version of The Goonies by Konami was a Japan-exclusive for the Famicom. According to professional Donkey Kong players, the red cabinet version was harder than the blue.
It mite be the other way around on the DK cabs. The reds had a 4 stack board that had a glitch that when you are at the very top of a ladder. A barrel would not come down on you. When they made the blue cabs, they made the PCB into a 2 stack board. And also eliminated the ladder glitch. I know that because of that glitch. When in a competition or attempting a record. The PCB has to be a 2 stack. The 4 stack boards are pretty rare now.
I played this as a kid at a hotel in Panama City Beach on vacation every year. I had no idea that it was on Famicom. I just bought a copy on eBay, and I look forward to playing it again after all these years. Thanks for the memories.
I never saw The Goonies arcade! This explains why Nintendo release Goonies 2 for the NES though! I did play The Goonies game on my Atari 800 XL and it was a great game!
I saw this in the wild twice (in the 80's) one in a Food4Less store (which was like this cab) the other was in the Aladdin's Castle in Fort Smith, AR in the more traditional (light blue) Vs. 2 in 1 corner cabinet. To be honest many Vs. arcades used this style of cabinet in my neck of the woods due to a lot of locations couldn't accommodate the 2 in 1 version. In fact one of the Walmarts in my town had a R-Type in the same cabinet it had the Vs controllers with the R-Type Marquee and the same side art as this Goonies cab. It was at that Walmart in 89 until it shut down in the mid 90's (5-6 years) due to a Supercenter opening down the road. My new local Arcade got a hold of a Red Tent sit down cab, and I would love to see them get a hold of The Goonies board. Also other than the Red Tent sit down version I have never seen the upright version in red. it's either a kit, blue unisysten (which include even rarer Vs games like Slalom and Castlevainia) or the Blue L shape 2 in 1 in. The funniest 2 in 1 cab I saw though was in the Little Rock Job Corp were it was converted into a Toki (Fabtek) and Crime Fighters (Konami).
Thanks for sharing Ron. I love The Goonies and had no idea there was an arcade. It looks pretty fun to play. Also, loved the line ,'I did the karate on him'!
Song is Goonies R Good Enough. Music video is a who's who of late 1980's WWE wrestlers including Captain Lou, Nikoli Volkov (sorry about the spelling), Iron Sheik and others.
You can always import the Famicom version of this game to play it on an NES. The song playing in an 8-Bit Version of “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” aka The Theme of the Movie. The Character you are talking about is called “Chunk” because he’s overweight (you know ‘80’s humor when body shaming was considered acceptable to do to people because they are overweight). The Fratellis are the gang with Mamma, Jake, Francis and Sloth (who is chained up in the basement).

I can definitely tell that the vs system was made by Nintendo because if you got a handheld Nintendo controler for the NES and if you look at the same control layout for the vs system it's exactly the same as an Nintendo entertainment system controler but instead of being for the home market for the arcade market because the vs system and the NES has the exact same controller layout
Vs. The Goonies is a platform arcade game themed based after the 1985 Steven Spielberg movie "The Goonies". In the game, guide Mikey through caverns evading mice and the Fratellis or use bombs or a slingshot to save your buddies who are being held captive. The game plays Cyndi Lauper's song "Good Enough". Some of the sound effects came from Popeye in this song. So someone has taken a Donkey Kong, Popeye, Mario Bros. Vs. Golf, Vs. Excitebike, Vs. Hogan's Alley, and Vs. Duck Hunt, added a new kit that Nintendo released for the Donkey Kong cabinet, and turned it into a Vs. UniSystem. And after they installed that, they released this game, Vs. The Goonies. It was developed and licensed from Konami, licensed exclusively to Nintendo of America Inc. The Goonies was also available as a PlayChoice-10 title in the U.S. and in the region. Despite the fact that it was released for the Nintendo Vs. System, the game was never released as a cartridge for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the home system in America. However, a sequel was released titled The Goonies II, was later released for the home console system.
