I remember in about 1976, I was 16 and brought some friends over from school to play on the Foosball table, and I wanted to show off my new album "Give Us A Wink" that I had just bought. But I was kind of hesitant because I knew the reaction I would get when I mentioned the band. So I bit my lip, took a deep breath, and said, "Hey guys, have you ever heard of Sweet?" They all laughed and one of them said, "You mean that Little Willy band?" I replied, "Uh...yeah." And he said, "You better not play that band around us!" But I put on the album and cranked it up. I didn't hear any more laughing after that. Somebody said, "This is Sweet?!?" In fact, a couple of those guys became Sweet fans after that. Not all of them though. Old preconceptions die hard for some people, apparently. Sweet is still one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time. They did such a wide variety of music that I couldn't wait to buy every album they put out, just to see what they would do next. Whatever style of music they chose to do, they did it well, and put everything they had into it. I have mad respect for this band.
I love this. What a breath of fresh air. . It’s great to see Sweet get the respect they deserve. Derided by so many as being manic bubblegum nonsense which couldn’t be further from the truth. Every member musically and vocally was fantastic. Also they all had great presence and identity. Personally, I always love watching Steve’s pushing of the boundaries during the glam era. I have Steve’s book and they really lived the life on their heyday. Being an early 70s baby I also got into them in the 80s via Sweet Fanny Adams. Their sound is unique and won’t be matched (imo). Andy and Steve’s higher vocals complimented Brian’s great rock voice and Mick was no slouch either. I also have tickets for next December. In Edinburgh. Praying it goes ahead. Thanks again. Fantastic to see other perspectives of a mainly forgotten band.
Cheers Nikki. I real appreciate the positive feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. Like a lot of 70's bands they had a unique sound that gets better with age. I just hope we can catch Andy and the band doing their thing soon!
A lovely review and much appreciated. Hopefully some new young fans will check them out. It still amazes me how hard their sound was and the quality of their productions. I listen to them in 1973/74 and i'm still listening to them now 2021/22. KEEP GOING ANDY!!!!!!
Gr8 review - ive started buying their old albums again - they were the first band i ever loved when i was a kid in the 70s lol - thanx alot - sweet Fanny Adams is probably their best record - rock n roll disgrace is fantastic and was B side !! - most bands would kill to have it as an A side , keep up the gr8 work
The Italian kids next door were blasting Suzi Q in 73 and l was hooked. "Fox on the Run" was a huge hit and "Action" was even better. I saw them circa 89 in a tiny club in Richmond, Victoria - they played "Medusa" and "No you Don't".
Great video man, but mind you: I think you're mistaking Steve Priest for Andy Scott when it comes to the high falsetto part. Actually it was Andy that took those ultra high notes. Brian got pretty high himself but his range dropped severly when he got this kick in his throat in a street fight.
You’re mistaken, as well. It’s Mick that had the high falsetto in the harmonies. Andy has a decent falsetto he used occasionally on his lead vocals, but Mick did the high harmony part.
@@jenniferdavolt1496 sorry Jennifer, but I really don't think I'm mistakin'. Just watch some videos from "Fox on the run" (best example) and watch who's comin' in last to fill in the ultimate high note where they get down to the chorus. ;-) here's one for example: ruclips.net/video/9jNt7ZGCW-o/видео.html . Your turn to show me wrong... ;-)
The riff is NOT a cover of.... God, why do people parrot these myths over and over? It does`nt get any more true in doing so - Both riffs are completely different.
It was Phil Wainman, not Phil Wainwright, who produced The Sweet. Brian Connolly were leadsinger in Wainwrights Gentlemen, that early had Ian Gillian as leadsinger, Mick Tucker were playing drums in the same band.
You could have mentioned that Fox On The Run on Desolation Boulevard (in Europe) was different from the single version which was recorded later. Also, Desolation Boulevard in the USA was different from the European one and had a mix of songs from SFA and DB, plus the singles Fox on the run and Ballroom blitz. Overall though, a good review. 👍
I agree. Nice to hear Sweet in their early days - even if it's bubblegumpop. The songs are still pretty decent, typical early 70's stuff. "Spotlight" is my fave, and also "Reflections".
Andy scott has the high falsetto not steve priest. Although steve had a naturaly high voice. Db was released in 74 although the us version was 75(a compilation of sfa and db with some singles). Phil wainman was their old producer so you may be getting mixed up with pre sweet band wainwright gentlman in which brian and mick were in.
Cheers Mick and thanks for checking out the vid. I don't why I always assumed Steve was the choir boy in the band! Excuse the muddle up on Phil Wainman / Wainwright and thanks for for the Desolation heads up. I will change the foot notes in the vid.
@@BOTBRAC because it was Steve Priest who sang the high notes. Ballroom Blitz, high notes on his part of the song. He also sang some lines in a few other songs that are in high notes. All the guys had a wide range in their singing voices that's why they harmonized so well together but Steve usually got the backup verses when Brian sang and Steve usually sang his verses or spoke his verses in high notes.
did you mention the double live album Strung up? I think was released in 1975? Cut above the rest is a great album, however it's different then any other Sweet album IMO
Yes I would agree but although I know those albums, it's the Brian stuff that I really know but I feel there is probably someone out there who could do a more thorough job of this. Someone who fully lives and breathes Sweet!
agreed☝🏻the last 3 albums without brian are basically on par with the previous 3 with brian, i love all 6 but my point is there’s not really any info around except they decided to carry on as a 3 piece😩not sure how much time they spent rehearsing trying out other players i mean if they grabbed a profile singer man things been different😊personally in other words carrying on as a 3 piece was a failure🤔
3/10 for your presentation about SWEET, Back to Front viewing, showing CD's when referring to vinyl and sorry but some of your info is incorrect. I have 10 + 1 double vinyl albums of The SWEET, been a fan of theirs since 1974, still listen to them now 2021
Sorry you didn't enjoy it but I try to remember as much as I can without looking to notes or 'reading' off a sheet. I've put some corrected info in the notes of the video so hopefully this adds more clarity.

i didn’t learn anything new but really enjoyed your aspect 👌🏼

@@jenniferdavolt1496 no, it was Andy with the high voice.
You didn't mention that "Fox on the Run" on the L.P was re-worked for a single. Some noticeable differences between the two.
The original is my favorite.
It has a different feeling. Much more raw although the single release is very polished as it should be.
11:08 the riff was a cover of Deep Purples "Woman from tokyo" In other comments in the Internet this is often said.
Yes! Never thought of that. Cheers for checking out the vid.
They are close but not the same, if you count the bars they are opposite to one another.
Yes the windy city riff reminds me also to this Purple song

@@Cl4rendonWe all agree that is not exactly the same riff, but it's similar. If we could ask Andy Scott himself?

Have you a copy of a British band called SHOOTER from 1978.. Great channel.

It was just Sweet in the US for the majority of their run, as the original band.
You overlooked the album "Sweet Fanny Adams", and the U.S.A. version of "Desolation Boulevard" (a very different album to the Uk version)
