Former MLB star and Big League Utah supporter Dale Murphy joined the KSL Sports Zone to talk about baseball coming to Utah.
After the NHL moved into Utah this year, the prospect of the MLB doing the same seems more realistic than ever.

With the NHL coming to town, Salt Lake becoming one of the top sports markets in the United States.
The MLB will likely be keeping a close eye on the Utah Hockey Club to see how the new team will perform off the ice. Regardless, Murphy said that things are trending in the right direction.
“(Salt Lake City) is a major league market,” Murphy said. “We can absolutely do Major League Baseball. We’re closer but we don’t know the timeline.”

MLB teams have changed names before. Example Colt .45s to Astros.
A's works anywhere. White Sox too. Diamondbacks does not.
Utah White Sox’s 😂 . . . 😐 no

Brodie Brazil should consider relocating to UTAH to report on the NHL Coyotes since He's No Longer Employed to report on the Sharks. Moreover, In a few more years He could be reporting on a UTAH MLB Team.
I’m a Diamondbacks fan and citizen of Maricopa County, specifically Phoenix proper. I live about 4 miles from Chase Field. On a night when they actually open the roof and do fireworks I can see them from my back yard. I love my team. I have a room in my house dedicated to all the bobbleheads and other memorabilia I’ve collected over the years. I have enough jerseys to outfit a 26 man roster. All that is to say that if it comes down to holding the fans hostage to get funding for a new ballpark, I will personally help them pack their shit and drive it to SLC for them.
Side note - just the sheer audacity of the CWS to be talking about wanting a new ballpark when they’ve just set the record for the most losses in a season is MIND BOGGLING
I don't think Arizona will be losing the Dbacks. That would be a devastating loss to baseball market. Phoenix is continuing to grow. The fan bases new generation of younger fans are turning into Dbacks. It's nice to see the fan base growing. At worse I bet they just move to Scottsdale or somewhere more east.
Lot of “A” based logos you are suggesting here
Hey, I’d be into the Anaheim Angels relocating to Salt Lake City.
@@IroncabbitThat would be a shame since they've been there since 1961
The Atlanta Braves are yet another "A" logo.
The city is willing to sell their souls to a rich guy by building him a pleasure dome? Be careful.
Pretty crazy that the SF Giants almost moved to Tampa Bay back in the '90s.
Thanks to owners voting against it, that never happened
Really want another Canadian team. I'd understand if two US cities are chosen, but the rivalry of two Canadian teams would be awesome.
We only got TSN and Sportsnet, competition right there. Expo fans still littered throughout the country, competition right there
I've never been to the Bay Area. I have been to Chicago, so this is where I'm coming from on this. The "two-team city" thing doesn't fully apply as much as the surrounding area does. The north side of Chicago is "richer" and the residents have more disposable income to spend on say a major professional sports franchise, and the south side is a very rough area with high poverty rates. This is likely what MLB is considering by allowing moves such as the A's move. It's not just the size of the market, but also the size of the disposable incomes.
The White Sox fan base is pretty much just the South Side of Chicago (possibly Charlotte and Birmingham, where the farm teams are). As you say, that's not where the money is in the Chicago area. Reinsdorf is just interested in seeing how much money for a new stadium he can get from the State of Illinois, and really couldn't care less about the fans or the team. The Sox have been rumored to be going to so many places (Milwaukee, Denver, Seattle, Tampa Bay) since the '60's, maybe it's time they left...
Interesting how the first 3 teams listed use an "A" logo.
Nevada Supreme Court essentially sealed the deal
Brodie, I live in SLC and have been closely following this issue, both from a local perspective and from your podcasts. The only sticking point that I can see with regards to moving an existing team, is that the team would have to be sold to local ownership (i.e. Gail Miller). There's no way any of this happens if, say the A's, try to move to Utah with Fisher staying as the owner.
Agree with your valid point. Possibilities exist in LHM group buying maybe 20%-40% but doing ALL the development and owning that too? That would seem to be worth their investment
@@brodiebrazil From you lips to God's ears. Still, hard to see how a guy like Fisher, or really any other owner, would let himself get shut out from such a money spinning scheme. And make no mistake, Utah professional teams make money. I was at the Delta Center for the exhibition game versus the Kings and it was a full house.
Utah has it all set.
The things holding up MLB expansion are the A’s and Rays stadiums resolutions.
If expansion were announced tomorrow, Utah is a front runner along with Nashville.
Remember, soda sells stop after the 7th inning 😂 No Utah baseball.
With inflation taking steam and the US Dollar falling, if the Dbacks left, I wouldn’t even matter at this point.
I know it’s a raw nerve, but if a market should lose a team it should be a market that has another team nearby. Chicago can support two teams, but the Cubs are the A side. Oakland losing the A’s is a bummer, but the SF Giants are right there. If the D-Backs leave Arizona , those desert fans have no baseball team nearby.
I still don't know why they would kick out the As though. They're easily the A side. 9 world series multiple pages long of hall of famers. The as had a deeper history in the bay than sf. I would've kept the as
I left San Diego for Salt Lake City … laugh all you want, but it feels like the place to be. The pride and the buzz (pun intended) in the air here is real. This city fights very well above its weight class.
I lived in SLC in the mid 80s and loved it over there. In central California now. I'm done with the A's and MLB after 50 years of fandom BUT if SLC gets a team, I may follow them. Having the A's in Vegas is horrible. Our great history in Oakland carrying over there is sickening. Just out of town tourists watching and slimy dudes who have big bets on them. Also, playing on turf and in a dome IS NOT baseball.
It's just gonna end up like all the cities people claim to be fleeing.
@@sebastianbelcher5354That's highly unlikely... unlike just about any state you can mention, the majority of people here in Utah are descendants from the early pioneers. In addition, Utah's population growth is limited by a lack of suitable land. There are millions of acres which are state and national parks and a significant amount of the remaining land is desert or mountains.
At least until the Salt Lake dries up leaving a toxic mess behind.

It will be hilarious if Fisher is forced into Utah. New name possibly? Utah polygamists? Call em Polly’s for short!
This seems to be a baseball problem. There’s a lot of teams out there asking for public money because all these owners see these new ballparks like Truist Park and they want it for themselves.
I'm not sure these smaller market towns are what the leagues want. Pittsburgh, for example, has old and established teams, but other than Steelers merch from the 70s, they are not money makers and must be subsidized. Phoenix will always be lucrative because of its market size that will continue to grow. It only lost its hockey team because of inept ownership and the need for the NHL to do something quickly.
Love your videos Brodie!
we need a team here in UTAH.
I love this coverage Brodie - you are one of the few that sees this reality… we could see 3 MLB teams moving in the next five years.
If I could pick the moves, I’d call the A’s to Portlandia, the Dbax to SLC and the Angels to SacTown. Time will tell…
Good mix. I’d relocate the A’s to Portland, the Angels to SLC, give one of two expansion franchises to Las Vegas and the other one to Austin or San Antonio.
Arte Moreno started his baseball ownership as part of the Bill Murray group of the Salt Lake Trappers in the 80s until 1992.
Utah too small a metropolitan area for MLB. And you go 100 miles from SLC, desert and mountains. Oakland superior to SLC both in terms of population and TV market (even with factoring in sharing with SF Giants.) 100 miles from Oakland still lots of people.
I hear this stupid comment all the time about SLC/Utah and it shows you know nothing about market size. Is Las Vegas too small at #40 tv market? SLC is #27 in market size, it has the population and money to support MLB 🙄
Metro population is not the demographic they measure Markets, its CSA which is the greater urban area people commute...50 miles from the urban center.
I get this, but the point is MLB doesn't give a shit about market size, as evidenced by leaving Oakland for Vegas. They care purely about taxpayers funding stadiums, and they want that leverage. The A's move is being done to set a precedent, pay up or your team is gone.
As a person who drives from Orlando to Rays games, it isn't the team or the stadium. It's the location.
Look at all of that developed property in those renderings. $$$
The White Sox already leveraged Tampa Bay for their last stadium.
Two team cities are slowly being phased out with the exception of New York at one point had 3 teams. I think there gonna delay expansion until all 2 team cities are eliminated.
Except New York of course, clearly they can handle it.
I feel with New York's size, and wealth- the Yankees(lol) will stay in New York with their city rival.
I think LA can handle it.
People laughed at me when I said it wouldn’t surprise me if the A’s end up in Salt Lake.
Please quit gaslighting Dbacks fans.
The A’s are definitely going to Vegas.
Salt Lake also has the Angels' AAA team.
Correct. Moving to a new ballpark and leaving the old one empty. Smiths ballpark prime for temporary use.
As opposed to retrofitting the existing ballpark to accommodate a major league franchise?
cant blame utah. im heartbroken over the coyotes. but they are taking over because they can. no hate to utah. gotta feel happy for them honestly.
I'm not really happy for them. We had to suffer during the building years and now the team is looking competitive. Utah gets a team primed for success without suffering through rebuilding. I don't blame Utah for what they did, but I certainly am not happy for them either.

I live near Salt Lake City but i grew up an A's fan originally from the SF Bay area. Would love to see A's or DBacks come to Salt Lake City. Salt Lake is a growing City and the mountains are incredible here.
So mountains have something to do with the viability of a baseball team?
Yuck 🤢
@@telephilia no they don't but nice scenery helps and Salt Lake is a beautiful city. Much better than where most MLB teams play..
The Colorado Rockies already have the mountains incorporated into their logo.
When the A's ultimately land in SLC, I look forward to the first home game almost as much as seeing Brodie on the reg. It's almost like he is willing it, albeit, without trying.
I'm not predicting anyone lands there (yet), just that they will be a factor whether it's obvious or not
Go Diamondbacks; Please.
Take the white Sox. They can be the first team to 122 loses!
If they Rays move, it would be east of the Mississippi river. . .either Nashville or Charlotte.
I thought the Rays got a stadium deal.
@@vincesmith2499He said the deal wasn't completely closed yet
No one thought the temperatures in Phoenix would be near 120 , 130 .... Over 120 days straight of 100° .
That weighs on a stadium especially one the size on a MLB stadium .
I'm surprised the Cardinals in the NFL aren't having issues too .
I guess the majority of games are played when it's cooler .
Still .
Excellent video with a breakdown of public funding. Salt lake makes a thousand times more sense than Vegas including the problem of financing a stadium in Vegas. Open air stadium on the Jordan River with a backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains while playing on real grass.
Problem for MLB in SLC….Mormons don’t do Sunday sports. Monday- Saturday, Mormons are great sports fans.
The MLB isn't leaving Arizona. That is one spot they would intervene.
Seems to me Arizona doesn't want sports teams. I get that they want owners to pay, but there also seems to be a land issue there. I think they'll end up in Utah. The A's, My guess is they'll be forced to sell to someone who will wither build in Oakland or Vegas. Fisher won't get funding by spring 2025. It'll be a coyotes scenario all over again. The Sox, that's tricky. I can't see MLB letting them chicago. But, they do want to be in Nashville. If they can't get Reinsdorf to pony up more cash, or sell stakes to minority owners to help build on 78 project. If chicago stays where they're at, you'll get expansion in Nashville in the east for sure. Then if Vegas (A's) and utah (DBacks) work out, you'll get expansion in Portland most likely.
Las Vegas resident here. No hype for the As, we don’t want them. Rather have an NBA team.
But probably not.
Considering what SEG promised AND delivered in the last 5 months or so, yeah, Utah is looking better and better.
Expansion isn't going to happen until around 2030
I always thought the Diamondbacks ought to have the number on the back of the uniform surrounded by the outline of a baseball diamond, so they would be literal Diamondbacks.
The Oakland fan base co-mingling with the SLC community couldn’t be anymore wild. But that could be said about any fan base compared to people of Utah.
The best solution (not probable, but most fair) would be for the Athletics' owner to be coerced to sell them like the Coyotes situation. The similarities are there (cheap owner, Mullett Arena/Sacramento, etc). The fact that ground hasn't been broken in Vegas is too risky (just like the arena situation in Phoenix).
I live in AZ, and from my awareness of the issues the diamondbacks are facing; not really a factor until 2027. Utah taking an AZ franchise away from us really left a sting, which will probably lead to the upgrades or new venue being done at "any means necessary"
Really? Another Arizona team to Utah?
I feal like the diamondbacks won't move just for the fact that it's to late to do anything but I do guarantee you thay will start using it as leverage the team I best see going there is the white Sox or the a's
Yup. It will happen…
For many in the windy city the white sox have always been the weak sister there. even after 100 years
A dissenting opinion. I think the Salt Lake City metro area is too small in population and too far away from comparable or larger metropolitan areas to support MLB. The Rocky Mountain West is a fast growing area so maybe in 30 to 50 years SLC becomes a better choice.
SLC has the 46th largest metro area in the U.S., and if it were a Canadian city would rank seventh there. So there are about 22 places with more people than SLC that also don’t have MLB. Start with San Antonio, Charlotte, Montréal, or Portland.
Here we go again, Market size is not determined by metro area, you know nothing about the geography or demographics of SLC. Its the CSA or combined statistical area that determines Market size which is 2.8 million people and makes SLC #27 tv market. All these suburban cities are connected and make up the Wasatch front. The metro Statistic is irrelevant 🙄
@@ericacottle3507 - okay, know it all. There are still about 22 places more suitable for MLB than SLC, and I believe the four places that I ended my first comment with to be _much_ more suitable.
@@outbackigloo6489 those cities are all good choices but not necessarily better. SLC is way more prepared for MLB than any of them
We should all remember Utah is only a possibility for the A’s IF Fisher sells the team to the Utah group OR major league baseball forces him to sell to them similar to what happened with the coyotes.
I see one common thread between the majority of these teams Brodie brought up…and that is most of them have terrible owners.
Listen I love sports and would love to see more sports in Utah but I don't even think the hockey clubs going to get what is a full crowds this year because of how expensive tickets are in baseball is not even popular in Utah we have minor league teams and pretty much nobody goes to those games I love baseball it's like my favorite sport but I don't think it would do well in Utah
The Rays already has a really good deal in public funding, if they can't get their private funding situation handled (more than likely they will), they should just sell the team.
I have been saying this for years… the tailwinds of the Utah Legislature and owners are important. Time to move to Salt Lake Brodie! At least come visit during ski season.
I'm curious about which NFL teams might relocate in the next few years. Maybe none
(Utah or Portland) and Nashville get Expansion teams and (Utah or Portland) gets a relocation team? Who knows! I guess at the end of the day we are all along for the ride.
Are taxpayers in Utah okay with all of this?
Not at all.
900 million has been approved, like he said they could put shovels into the ground at any time
I find it ridiculous owners would leave an urban metropolis area to move into the desert. At least Phoenix and Denver are populated away from the city
Id rather see Charlotte. Bigger city and it is time the South got more teams.
You can't buy loyalty or passion.
stadium needs to be domed.
Portland > Utah
Why not both? The A’s come to Portland (to the Ballpark at Zidell Yards) and the Angels (who are an afterthought in So Cal at this point) come to Salt Lake City? Meanwhile, Vegas gets one of the two expansion franchises when their park is ready in 2028.
Portland is objectively a shit hole.
Sorry clearly you don’t know anything about local TV money in MLB. NO way Chicago is moving out of the number 3 TV market with one of the most lucrative local TV deals in all of MLB for a smaller market like Utah or even Nashville. Even if they get a totally free stadium. Now A’s Snakes possible. Sox’s no way no how no they are not giving up the Chicago market.
Listen to the Locked on White Sox podcast which also has a RUclips channel, Chicago has several billionaires that would be interested in purchasing the White Sox. Still the Cubs are much more popular than the White Sox.
So the Chicago White Sox won’t move even in the event that their new stadium proposal gets denied?
I kind of do know everything about that. If A's can go from #5 to #40 (vegas) market, then Sox can go from #3 to #27 (slc) market.
@@brodiebrazilyou called it Brodie, only took a few minutes for someone to complain about the television markets haha. You are well positioned to know all about this with the A’s and as always, you are spot on!! Great coverage as always.
The RSN model is dying. The White Sox may be in the #3 market, but they have serious competition in the Cubs. Chicago local TV revenue won't be as lucrative going forward as it has been.
Utah will probably lose these teams one day too when fans get bored and in 20 years they're begging for new stadiums. I would be cautiously optimistic if I were a Utah fan, the Coyotes had a perfect stadium in Glendale. They're gonna learn the hard way that it's never enough for these teams.
Who cares about 20 years from now, some of us might not be around to see it
Since when did the Angels move to the Los Angeles market Brodie? I guess the A's were/are in the San Francisco market too.
well, as they're considered by both Nielsen & mlb... to be in the same market... yes...
Here's how I see it. The A's may not go back to Oakland. The A's may not stay in Sacramento. The A's MAY end up in SLC, Portland, Nashville, Charolette, Orlando. But they will NOT play on 9 acre site on LV Blvd where the Tropicana once stood. NEVER. It's a shit show.
Salt Lake City has funds already approved, Portland, Nashville, Charlotte , Orlando do not a number of teams are rumored for Nashville, they should start a Nashville division
Both the White Sox and Royals stadium leases end around the same time
Both teams should stay right where they are.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred made one thing clear: An MLB expansion team is not coming to Nashville - or anywhere - anytime soon. On May 6, 2024…No Expansion is not coming in soon…you got to buy the team and move it.
Maybe he just has no interest in impacting the media territory of one of the NL’s more successful franchises- the Atlanta Braves.
@@IroncabbitBack in 2004 the Expos moved to Washington and became the Nationals, the Orioles were against it, but there wasn't a thing they could do about it
That intro was nice!
So the A’s moved out without the arena set in stone? That was dumb. Still not sure why they think Vegas is good thing. Like the Raiders they will be mostly playing away games “at home”
I’m still holding out hope that the PBG will come in at the 11th hour and swipe the A’s from Vegas (for LV to instead get an expansion franchise) because it would strengthen the A’s-M’s divisional rivalry, not much to change from OAKland A’s to PORTland A’s, the media market contains a sizeable population of Bay Area transplants and Latino immigrants, and the A’s already wear two of the three Portland city colors, so the uniform changes would be minimal.
Though if that happens I would like to see the club honor its time in Oakland by changing their primary cap from the “A’s” to an Old English “P.”
Save money: MLB could look at contraction as well.
Nope. It's expanding to 32 to MAKE more money.
They tried that back in 2002, it went nowhere
They are going to blow up the Trop next week for no reason? Shovels in the ground soon after. TOWN BIZ OUT OF BIZ😂😂
Tropicana was being demolished... no matter what. But you're probably from vegas and knew that already.
Very true Brodie, the Trop being demolished no matter what, however the shovels will be in the ground before they blow it up.
Are you taking about the Tropicana hotel in Las Vegas or the Tropicana ballpark in St. Petersburg where the Rays play?
With baseball spirit getting back to pre-pandemic levels, MLB would be crazy not to add 4 teams to new markets. Portland, Salt Lake City, Nashville/Louisville, and Vegas/Albequerque…
All of those cities will be candidates for teams looking for better deals looooong before we’ll see any expansion
@@MichaelReganUntil they put shovels in the ground for stadiums in those cities, they're not getting anything,
Agreed. 32 teams would enable a balanced schedule as there could be eight divisions with four teams (2x regional rivals) each.
They're going to 32, not 34.
@@vincesmith2499 2 new teams and 2 moved teams with 4 new markets is what I meant… 34 wouldn’t be balanced however 36 total teams would be fun too…
Baseball feels like a sport more suited to smaller communities where you have less people but I’d wager more rabid enthusiasm. Think OKC Thunder.
I don’t get any team going to Vegas. It’s a transient city with no devoted fan base. I don’t see that supporting 82 games. Maybe 8-9 games for the NFL but not more.
I also left CA (east bay) for Utah. Amazing how fast this city and state is growing. Fantastic past and future ownership groups. The Smiths and the Millers know how to get things done. A lot to look forward to!
Please don’t vote like you would in CA
@@russell75rogersIf Republicans are the ones wasting people's tax dollars on stadiums, why should anyone vote for them? I assume Utah is a GOP-run state.
People's taxes should not pay for stadiums.
Chicago or Angels should buy the A’s interest/stadium in Las Vegas. Maybe change their name to the Silver Sox for the silver state of Nevada.
A’s should keep their interest in Sacramento to remain the A’s.
Neither Sacramento nor Las Vegas is fully funded. Oakland needs to step in and pass the ballpark plan with the requisite public funding.
the A’s are taking same path as the coyotes left there old building with potential not yet solidified plans found a temp arena planned to be there 2 or 3 years utah is talking about expansion and having all the money they need and then sweep up and grab an nhl team I wouldn’t be surprised if the A’s move to utah and then a couple years down the line the diamond backs move to vegas

Utah government and leadership appears to be the smartest state in the Union these days, in my opinion.
No it's not, since economists all agree public funding of stadiums is stupid and benefits no one except the owners.
The white Sox need to move to Nashville, MLB needs to take the A’s away from fisher and sell to a Bay Area owner applicant that will finance a new ballpark
Nashville has no public funding like Salt Lake City has
Like the PBG that just purchased an undeveloped 33-acre site in inner southwest Portland with intent to build such a ballpark.
