I have been listening to the album stream for days now. Like a few other people have remarked, it's a lot to take in at once. My initial reaction was a bit mixed but now, having listened to it numerous times, I have to say I think it a stunning piece of work.
I don't think it really matters. And you can write lyrics that sound gay and not be gay. Crazy right? Maybe he's writing from a women's perspective. Not saying he's one thing or the other. And not saying I care. Just saying there's not really a way of you knowing.
Sufjan Stevens is a sensitive, sweet man. One of the reasons why I love his music is because he's so in touch with his feelings and can express them so beautifully. He is a poet.

Am I the only one that remembers Sufjan starting out with only experimental music? Like a techno album, into a simplistic banjo, guitar and light instrumentation album... This should be expected of a creative person like Sufjan. After you compose for a orchestra, you can pretty much make whatever kind of music you want... : )
i have listened to this song then listened to the enjhoy your rabbit album, looking back i think this was an informed sidestep, but a sidestep nonetheless, i found that the song grew on me though reminds me of Yeasayer or Grizzly bear as apposed to his previous albums such as michigan and illinois which i liken to damien rice or bon iver, all of which i listen to and enjoy so i will definately be getting the album :P
Of course I recognize his voice, but if I heard this without knowing anything about it, I would have assumed he was just a guest singer on some other joint, not that this was his stuff. If the whole album is like this, I'm not sure if I can get behind it. Maybe it's one of those things where it has to just grow on me, rather than appeal to me right away like his earlier stuff. This was the first album I ever listened to by Sufjan Stevens, and I literally ended up buying it within 15 minutes of loading his bandcamp page.
Wow, I guess I just was not ready for this album when it came out, so glad I'm finally giving it another shot now, cuz DAMN what a fool I've been...
