Hope y'all enjoy this video! I spent about two weeks studying Bill's twitter... it's been hard work. TIME STAMPS BELOW!
    0:00 - intro
0:40 - the tweet that started it all... a $30,000 giveaway by MrBeast & Bill Pulte
1:30 - aren't giveaways just a way to buy followers? let's do the math and see how much they "paid" for each new follower gained...
4:09 - why am I so skeptical and pessimistic??
4:53 - MrBeast's channel is all about gimmicks, including giving away money to strangers
    5:59 - "Giving Homeless People $1,000" video
6:47 - MrBeast's strategy is give away/spend money, go viral, repeat
7:50 - "Money Spending Content" will be my next video topic lmao looking at you, David Dobrik!!!
8:27 - back to twitter... MrBeast is a "human ATM," what about Pulte??
8:44 - Bill Pulte, Philanthropist and (self-proclaimed) Inventor of Twitter Philanthropy
    10:12 - more Pulte tweets
11:41 - people are desperate to win money on twitter... many of them enter giveaways constantly
12:39 - which is more effective? charity, or welfare / social safety nets ? we shouldn't have to rely on gofundme or twitter giveaways for survival
14:52 - where is Pulte's money coming from? who is he??
15:52 - Pulte is crowdfunding for donations. Join the "team" !
17:00 - quick moment to discuss corporate philanthropy
18:12 - the TeamPulte website is confusing
    20:16 - what is TeamGiving ?
21:09 - does Bill fund his twitter giveaways? orrrr CashApp giveaway theory
22:26 - what about the needy people who don't have access to internet / twitter?
23:26 - watch out for scammers and fake twitter philanthropists

    two words: tax write-off
pulte's followers donating directly to charities won't let him get a write-off, but him donating money they gave him will.
corporations paying their employees livable wages won't give them a write-off, but them donating money to charity will.
billionaires and corporations are so money hungry when they already have more money than most of us would know what to do with :(

Well I study finance and accounting and it's not how it works. Most countries have marginal tax rate so there is very small window of opportunity to pay less taxes and the benefits of it are miniscule. Most often you don't keep more money, just pay less to the government and give some money to the charity you like. Idk what people don't understand about marginal tax rat still in 2019. If you earn more than the highest bracket benchmark you are still better off paying 35% of it than just giving it away. What gives the rich the benefit are shady charities that launder the money back to you or buy you influence. Giving cash to homeless doesn't give you tax benefits.

You should do an analysis on those "what I spend in a week" videos. Some people seem to realize they're overspending on unnecessary things. Others just act like it's no big deal that they buy $15 salads 3x a week and spend hundreds of dollars on Uber and just blame it on "my city is just SO expensive" as if everyone else in LA/NYC etc has to casually spend $1000 a week even before rent and bills. I definitely feel like it relates to the relatability video you made. They're not quite celebrities so you really don't expect them to be living super lavishly but then they just drop $150 on eyelash extensions or $400 on a gym membership. They always act appalled by their spending but they make so much money I can't imagine they'll change. The thing I hate the most is that they make this video to seem transparent but then SO many of them only show weekdays (NOT a full week) and not the times when they're going out on the weekend spending a ton.

    • @tiffanyferg
      @tiffanyferg  4 года назад +261

yesss I've been considering analyzing this! I actually filmed two weeks of my spending lmao but I'm thinking I'll quickly include my spending in a bigger video analyzing the trend overall. Love seeing more content about money & personal finance tho!

@@tiffanyferg I actually love binging these videos and find them very entertaining it's just interesting to see how it's become a trend. Especially because I'm 23 in LA with a decent job (similar age/location as many youtubers) but my spending is SO different from theirs it makes me feel better about myself hahaha. The financial content from lifestyle youtubers is also interesting because it's usually very obvious stuff and the content already exists on so many financial channels but I think it's a good thing because so many young people are uneducated about these topics and don't seek out the information from experts so their only exposure is through these videos from youtubers they are already a fan of. That aspect can be very positive and I see lots of comments from people who are learning a lot from them.

If wealthy or middle class people were super stingy the economy would collapse even more than it already has. By getting ubers home from my night shifts (I don’t have a car and I finish work in the middle of the night) the drivers get at least something. By getting expensive coffee from small cafes as a weekend treat, people support small businesses.

But I think at the core it’s still a good thing. We shouldn’t bash corporations for donating to charity, what would you rather them do- not? Of course they should be providing a fair wage, paying their taxes etc, but I don’t think companies should be bashed for donating to charity- just for everything else.

    • @apollinedecaesteker1614
      @apollinedecaesteker1614 4 года назад +6

@@jaspar6204 I agree, but they're not being criticized for giving to charity but rather because by emphasizing their "donations", they try and hide all the shitty disgusting stuff they do, like exploiting most of their workers, contributing to an endless capitalist cycle that consists of destroying the planet, often making private use of ressources that are fucking public, and treating many workers terribly (low wages, bad working conditions, actively fighting against workers' unions, hiding the abuses that go on inside the company, etc.).
All those CEOs that get bloody rich off of our backs don't get to pretend that they're generous and that they care about the planet & the people. They wouldn't be where they are if they really did.
Moreover, the Bill Gates, Bernard Arnault & Jeff Bezos of this world are the ones who create and perpetuate the horrendous inequalities charities try to deal with. So it's just awful injustice, cynicism & hypocrisy to "give" back to charities a fraction of what they stole from us all.
And finally, while giving to charity is great because it does help some people, most of the issues charities try and deal with are actually public issues that can never be solved without a systemic change. Ie the state needs to get involved, charity alone can never end poverty. So yeah charities are needed cause they do the work some states won't do, but it's not okay. We need to push towards better public policies, welfare state, social security for all regardless of one's immigration status - not simply towards giving more to charities that governments can then rely on to do their job in their stead.

The commercialism has killed my love of Christmas and people also look at me like I’m crazy when I say I don’t care about it anymore. Um, excuse me. Right after Halloween (sometimes before) all the the Christmas decorations go and the Christmas music starts playing in stores. That’s way too early, and everything is trying to get you to buy a bunch of stuff you don’t need and that’ll just end up in landfills. Black Friday is just ridiculous and it’s starting earlier and earlier every year. The workers can’t even eat their Thanksgiving dinner with their families because the madness is starting at 2pm on Thanksgiving Day. This used to be the season for family but now it’s just about how much the gifts are worth.

    • @atmassylphen6785
      @atmassylphen6785 4 года назад +5

Um actually In many things, minor things, like tipping your waiter or giving away money to a good cause, yes, the result outweighs the intention. That doesn’t mean the intentions don’t matter at all, or that they don’t color the results. We don’t live in black and white world. It’s why some people don’t take money from businesses when their loved ones are killed or injured due to poor oversight, for example; it’s considered blood money. The result is money to help with whatever, and that’s good, but the intention is to absolve some degree of guilt or blame or just bad publicity (almost always). While many go after such payments in this kind of scenario, many are also adamant about not taking that blood money.
It’s a matter of perspective, but people who hold yours tend to think good results negate bad intentions entirely, and they most certainly don’t. It’s also thought not taking the money in the above scenario is considered petulant and immature, dismissed as stupid and overly emotional. There’s little consideration for someone’s personal sense of integrity and how they go about maintaining it. Which is incredibly sad.

@@atmassylphen6785 really good in depth take! but why the snark at the end? i dont think the previous comment in any way meant to diminish the importance of acknowledging the intention behind an action, but rather meant that the action+outcome in itself w/o consideration of intent, can be good. they just didnt dwell into the intention part too much, and it seems a but unfair to then assume their perspective on it

As a Swiss person, it really pains me that in the US, a huge majority of people rely on fundraisers just for almost standard medical procedures. Our healthcare may seem expensive - but its so so so worth it. You might still spend a lot if you get sick, but nowhere near the US system. Its sickening seeing all these fundraisers and as you said these “happy stories” that should NEVER be needed un the first place!

This is probably my favorite video of yours so far! The idea of these sorts of giveaways always struck me as being sort of wrong on some level, but I haven't been able to articulate why, especially because, as you said, charity is generally very good. You did such a good job of putting all of this into words and pointing out how these can keep institutional problems alive. Seriously love this video, it's so insightful!

I think I read that we shouldn’t really be ok with billionaires donating their money, while not being taxed, as we are essentially decimating our tax system (regulating our social services through the government) and instead relying on a handful of rich people deciding whether to give poor people pocket change.

And in Spain we also get lots of news about Latin american countries.
The US and China are more frequently in the news just because nowadays they are two of the biggest world power houses and their decisions and moves have a direct impact on the rest of the world economy, trade and climate issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

And some people have spoken out against him. The fact that he’s helped you is great but it doesn’t negate any of the other stuff. Like freelee the banana girl has positively impacted people and helped people go vegan, but she still acts like a cult leader and is causing harm in many ways.
This is quite common with self-proclaimed gurus in personal development, self-help fields who often don’t have legitimate credentials. They may genuinely want to help people, but they also have an obvious thirst for power, fame, or money. Hope this was clear!

It's like "Oh you can have this £10,000 but only if you win this game of fortnight" Or potentially more gross, when they don't even know they are competing and they just get a pathetic message like "sorry, the other guy won £10,000 because he blinked 10 times but you can have £100 I guess".. I appreciate charity, but when it's like this I genuinely feel icky. • @eponian

I think you're spot on with all this. It's so blatant that Pulte is running some sort of ego boosting scheme so many people find him shady and this shows online. They have a lot to gain by looking like they're doing something good out of generosity. You mention Mrbeast and honestly I think he's just as bad though his methods differ slightly as there is cases of him genuinely giving out money but a lot of his content is created in ways he isn't really giving to anyone but his friends, other successful people etc. He wastes money and makes money as a result, a lot of money!
People who genuinely care for others and want to help them out with their wealth wouldn't publicise it though and mrbeasts earlier content is just proof that he doesn't care about helping others but rather that he is benefiting from doing so and gets applauded for it. Now he had done some good things but its got underlying self gain.
Those who actually need money will never see it from them and its sad as I checked the comments of Pultes Twitter and its just the same people desperately asking for help. If mrbeast genuinely cared he wouldn't want to associate with him but the fact standing is since they do similar things they have buddied up.
I could go into this more but I won't type an entire book. It takes a smart person to see that despite it being a good happy story there's actually a slimey back story and not so great intention of self gain.
Honestly if I had so much money I could give it all away I'd try find those who genuinely need it and I wouldn't care to publicise it, I'd be happy knowing I've made someone's life better or even saved it. Rich people usually aren't the kind hearted ones though and I doubt I'll ever be as rich as either of these guys.

Have you read into Gramsci? He was an Italian sociologist and he defined ''cultural hegemony". He basically said that as long as culture (that's education, mass culture, TV and now internet culture) is 'controlled' by upper class, the labor class will not be able to develop class consciousness which could lead to a social revolution. This is what's happening here I think. They have such a tight story telling in their "charity" that it is hard second guess it, especially if you don't have the resources. And that's why I LOVE your videos! You second guess those things, put the time in the research and make it accessible! And you're right, the problem is not "giving the money" the problem is why there is that need in society (cf. The example you gave of the child whose dad has cancer)

It was a video of a small child, maybe 7 years old, being forced to either choose a toy they want really badly for Christmas or choosing a household item that their parents cannot afford (this child was impoverished). How about if you have the money to do a full production of this challenge, USE THAT MONEY TO BUY THE STRUGGLING FAMILY THE NECESSITIES FOR THE PARENTS AND THE TOYS FOR THE CHILD. Stop trying to make a social experiment out of a poor child's misfortunes and instead give the family some assistance.

I kept getting recommends on my YT feed of Mr. Beast & others giving away money to "homeless vets" or even worse, "I bought a McMansion & filled it with $100 bills then invited every hot poor college chick to have a party!!"
They disgusted me so much, I blocked them so I wouldn't see those painful reminders that I've been invisible or ignored my entire life, even by my own family.
I was born unwanted, despised & used by my own mother, who used me as a money grab machine, ranted to me like I was her shrink from toddler age, and pretended to be rich while we (minus my dad, who couldn't handle her selfish, controlling hypocrisy) were hungry all the time, never got any decent Xmas or Bday presents, even coached me to say certain things so the family court judge would order the maximum amt of child support for her to spend. She's broken the law for years, even a decade after she kicked me out, she claimed me as a dependent to get tax returns.
I became disabled at age 14, had the first of 8 failed back surgeries at 15, and was doomed to a life of severely painful surgeries, procedures, and developed a dozen other chronic & terminal illnesses in the 20yrs since that started. I have MS, fibro, chrons, gastroperesis, chronic debilitating nausea, neuropathy, cluster migraines, tension headaches, TMJ, myoclonic seizures at least every other night, and have nearly died from massive stress heart failure TWICE by age 30. I'm now 35, had my DNR rights violated twice, and not one person has let me discuss my future, how to improve the stress that's killing me, or even anyone in my large, healthy, middle & upper class family, asked how I'm doing!
I have literally made it on my own for 10yrs only by selling everything I owned when my mom kicked me out just after my 8th back surgery, with no notice or support, or by begging online for help & a GoFundMe, both of which have had very minor success in fundraising small amounts every few months.
Ive been expected to exist on only $400/mo after the minimum med costs keeping me out of the hospital are paid. If I were healthy enough I'd have been forced to sell an organ or become a prostitute just to barely meet my basic survival needs! Instead, I get to go without meds, food, toiletries, forget new clothes or replacing a broken vacuum, and I've never experienced being able to just drive somewhere, anywhere, by myself, without begging a ride off people who then resent me for it!
I'm expected to die any day from stress, I fight suicidal pain on an hourly basis, and have so far only existed as a medical lab rat who can't get one person in the world to care enough to just help me get my story out, or pitch in $2-5/month (my request to my dozens of family, who all spend that much on one coffee every day) for a power bill I am unable to pay right now.
My ONLY BUCKET LIST WISH is to be allowed to live in a van, SUV, Uhaul, so I can finally know what life & freedom & happiness actually are!!

omfg I relate so hard about the "corporate philanthropy" thing. The company I work for has a "day of giving" every year and does this huge thing about how much they love giving back. and yet they tell us they can't afford to give us more than a .75% cost of living increase. and that's AFTER negotiation from my union. They originally offered...wait for it.... .25%. Yep, a quarter of one percent for a cost of living increase. Needless to say I'm looking for a new job.
