Nice job, Mike. I forgot I was watching a student during that. Dixon - I’ve got a video coming out on Saturday with landings at Leesburg. Feel free to review 😉😂
Mike's got his pilot voice down to a T. Guy sounds like he was born with a yoke in his hands. Thanks for sharing your videos with us, man! There's so much to learn from them. Can't get enough of that proud teacher expression.
I gotta say I love these debriefs. I've been a military instructor, and I'm working on CFI on the civilian side. That said, I've never been a primary instructor, never sent a non-qualified pilot solo, and that idea scares the hell out of me. I really enjoy seeing your solo students kill it!
I really like this style for solo flights, so it really still feels like a lewdix video and not just the student. Even for solos in the pattern, I think it would still be cool to see a review after so you can see it exactly how we see it and get your takes. Cross countries next?
I just found your channel. I’ve been watching pilot videos for the past couple months. I flew with a private pilot last weekend as a surprise birthday gift… and now I can’t stop thinking about getting back up. Your demeanor in the cockpit is really what I hope to find in an instructor one day!!! Thx for the content
Great video. Loved the split screen play by play commentary as much as I loved your excitement for your student pilot. Can’t wait to be in that spot in the near future with you my friend.
It is fantastic to see how excited you get for your students. You are an excellent instructor and it shows in your students when they go solo. He had command of the airplane at all times and his radio work was quite good for a student pilot. It is even better than a lot of seasoned experienced pilots you hear on the radio. It is important because it is something that ATC judges you by when you first contact them. I want to say that I know you had a dream of being an airline pilot. I know life circumstances threw you many curve balls. But I feel that you have found your calling. There are very few instructors that show the enthusiasm you do in instructing. Most have goals to become airline pilots and there is nothing wrong with that. But there is something to be said about someone who is dedicated to instruction. It shows in your instruction that you enjoy what you are doing and it is what your calling in aviation truly is. Keep up the great work and never lose that enthusiasm that you have for teaching. Your students will remember you always. I still remember my first flight instructor and how great he was and that was 28 years ago. You make a lasting and very important impression on your students. Congratulations and I hope you achieve all the success as an instructor because you, my friend, are top drawer and you deserve it.
Wow, thank you so much man, I really appreciate your kind words. I have definitely found that I gain more from helping other people achieve their dreams. It's such a thrill to see my people do well because it is truly a team effort. I'm enjoying it for now and we'll see how far it goes! Thanks for supporting man!
Awesome flying Mike!! I just did my 1st dual X-country this morning. Flew into KCHA. Mike made this look easy. Hopefully, I will be doing the same very soon. Great video, Lewis! Thank you.
@@josephstephen4295 no problem man, I get it. I'm not from the area either, I've just become so obsessed with the channel that I fly in the Orlando area in the sim instead of my area
I set myself limits for when I should fly nascent on conditions of everything including my environment. I tend to have unsafe habits of driving when I shouldn’t ( being hungover, tired, etc.) so I want to eliminate thinking I could do so when I’m flying. So one time I went to flight school hungover and knew without a doubt, I shouldn’t solo but we were scheduled for pattern work with an instructor anyway. So I decided to see how I perform. My landings were awful. I wasn’t feeling good or confident and as the feeling got worse, I handed over the controls and terminated the session. It really helped me realize how important it is to watch over yourself.
It's easy to lane an aeroplane when everything goes perfect, the true mark of a good pilot is calmly managing things when it's not perfect. That was a perfect imperfect landing. Well done - he's ready to fly in the UK where true aviation occurs 😉😀💓
Well done Mike, good inspiration for those of us not there yet. Also thanks for sharing these videos, it helps the learning process a lot. My flight school won't let me film my flights and it's a real shame I miss out on the chance to review my own flights unfortunately. I feel like I'm missing a lot.
Awesome job Mike! Great to see yet another student of Lew's successfully complete a solo! Guess he's a better CFI than he thinks ;) Starting to get really excited for my discovery flight... going up in a Warrior on Monday!
Good stuff! I should do so XC solo soon, very good points. Me too need to work on checklists, I understand these things are the base and key to pass through the check ride successfully
Great Job ...and nothing wrong with being the quiet type. I'm the same way, Did 5 hour cross country the other day and only talked when talking to ATC.
Lewdix, "I am leaving my headset, my gopros and my flight back, because I trust you.. Have fun brother" Mike, "what about your flying eyes?" Lewdix, "Are you freaking mad, not a chance in hell brother." Was anyone else, besides me, watching the footie game behind Lewdix?
4:40 - Right rudder correction applied. Congrats on PIC Supervised Solo XC, Mike! Q: Is it a thing from the past to stop in at an FBO and get a signature for the flightbook for Solo XC?
He’s soo cool, nice one. I was taught to crab on crosswinds and I’m curious at dipping a wing into wind and applying opposite rudder? Not really sure I can get my head around that one, would you be able to explain the technique a little more at some stage? Loving the videos!
Great job Mike! Its awesome seeing you progress and crush it! The only question I have is what the hell happened at the end with the lady stopping on the runway?! Did you see it or hear on comms?
Love this. Its great seeing the excitement you have on behalf of your student. Wish you were out of KLEE. I would do my IFR training with you. Keep it up man. BTW how are you mounting the rear center cam looking forward? Is there a permanent mount there?
Great video and awesome job Mike! Lew, do you teach students to make verbal call outs? That's one thing I noticed he wasn't doing which I feel helps a lot. Also, he didn't say "Welcome to the sky". Not sure how the plane was able to fly without that.
When you are training your students now, and I suppose it is for anyone learning to fly now, are the students learning much pilotage and dead reckoning in today's day and age of GPS, sometimes multiple GP's in the cockpit? I am not sure what is required by the ACS. When I got my PPL back in 1993, there were no GPS's or Loran on board any of the aircraft I flew and no portable GPS's at all. All cross country flying was by pilotage and dead reckoning (and VOR to VOR navigation via airways etc..) and pencil to paper with an actual written flight plan and watch or timer of some sort. Curious how the private is done now.
That’s a great question. I make sure my students know how to plan a flight by hand and have proficiency in using the paper navlog in the real world before I let them use their electronic for cross country flying. I feel it’s a necessity to know rather than relying solely on the easy stuff.
Well done Mike and as always, love your videos LewDix ! Would like to have your inputs on using EFB while in training (PPL) ! Here (Switzerland) in the flying school where I'm doing my PPL, not that it is not allowed but it is not recommended and therefore all the students never used an EFB ! Only maps, pencil, navlog and a watch, that's it !
Thanks man! I encourage the use of an EFB, only after you understand how to do everything with pencil and paper. Once those crucial skills are built, I introduce the EFB
Another fab video! Well done Mike, another great step! Could you tell me what checklist you are using? It's obviously not the Foreflight one which, while good, is a bit cumbersome for me. I'd rather it was all on one page like Mike is using there. I'm guessing it's just a PDF in the Documents section, but where are they from? Thanks :)
@@LewDixAviation Thanks chap, could you add an Arrow III checklist to your collection? That's my regular flyer, mainly on simulation for now, but your vids keep the dream of finishing my PPL alive :)
Mike's a machine, what a pro! Start calling that dude "Iceman"
Nice job, Mike. I forgot I was watching a student during that.
Dixon - I’ve got a video coming out on Saturday with landings at Leesburg. Feel free to review 😉😂
It's no fun reviewing an actual pilot, we already assume pilots are good enough. Especially those brits. American students though, great use of time

Thanks
Excellent vid Lew! Mike did great. Very comfortable on the radios
Nice. I think Mike is my favorite of your current students. Just quiet competence. I'd feel comfortable flying with him based on what I've seen.
Thanks Lewis and Mike, 1 of my favorites for sure. On your way to the top of aviation RUclips channels! Keep it up!
