Student Pilot Solo REVIEWED By Flight Instructor

- What a day! Any solo can be a daunting task for a student pilot, but it's a whole new beast when you have to fly away from home to another airport AND come back again all alone. Today Mike does exactly that. I sent my cameras with him to capture how it went and decided it would be a nice idea to review how he did!
Enjoy the flight review!

Mike's a machine, what a pro! Start calling that dude "Iceman"
Mike's got his pilot voice down to a T. Guy sounds like he was born with a yoke in his hands.
Thanks for sharing your videos with us, man! There's so much to learn from them. Can't get enough of that proud teacher expression.
Nice job, Mike. I forgot I was watching a student during that.
Dixon - I’ve got a video coming out on Saturday with landings at Leesburg. Feel free to review 😉😂
It's no fun reviewing an actual pilot, we already assume pilots are good enough. Especially those brits. American students though, great use of time
I gotta say I love these debriefs. I've been a military instructor, and I'm working on CFI on the civilian side. That said, I've never been a primary instructor, never sent a non-qualified pilot solo, and that idea scares the hell out of me. I really enjoy seeing your solo students kill it!
I really like this style for solo flights, so it really still feels like a lewdix video and not just the student. Even for solos in the pattern, I think it would still be cool to see a review after so you can see it exactly how we see it and get your takes. Cross countries next?
Thanks for the feedback! Yes sir cross countries next for Mike
Hey Lewis got my ppl couple days ago and have been watching u from the beginning which has helped me a lot and motivated me to continue
Thanks
Love the video, Lewis! Would like to see more of these "reviews" in the future. Bravo, Mike!
Cheers!
Excellent vid Lew! Mike did great. Very comfortable on the radios
Great analysis of Mike's flight!! You should do more of these.
This is super inspiring and awesome to watch. Great job Mike!
Great video. Loved the split screen play by play commentary as much as I loved your excitement for your student pilot. Can’t wait to be in that spot in the near future with you my friend.
Rodders! Thanks man! Your enthusiasm is infectious too so can't wait to record a flight with you.
Awesome flying Mike!!
I just did my 1st dual X-country this morning. Flew into KCHA. Mike made this look easy. Hopefully, I will be doing the same very soon.
Great video, Lewis! Thank you.
congrats mike! I am at a similar spot in my training and am envious how smooth you are on the radio. Nice work!
Great Job Mike!!!! Great job Lew!!!!!
Great content! good idea, haven’t seen this on other channels.
This video was great! I learned a lot from you explaining things and watching him.
Nice. I think Mike is my favorite of your current students. Just quiet competence. I'd feel comfortable flying with him based on what I've seen.
Well done Mike, good inspiration for those of us not there yet. Also thanks for sharing these videos, it helps the learning process a lot. My flight school won't let me film my flights and it's a real shame I miss out on the chance to review my own flights unfortunately. I feel like I'm missing a lot.
Thanks Lewis and Mike, 1 of my favorites for sure. On your way to the top of aviation RUclips channels! Keep it up!
Thank you!
I just found your channel. I’ve been watching pilot videos for the past couple months. I flew with a private pilot last weekend as a surprise birthday gift… and now I can’t stop thinking about getting back up. Your demeanor in the cockpit is really what I hope to find in an instructor one day!!! Thx for the content
That’s fantastic. Glad you found my channel, hope you enjoy it and find some help along the way
Great video. Congrats Mike! Awesome commentary Lewis. Loved the TV ads and soccer in the background :)
Brilliant! Nice job, Mike!
More please, Lew!
So much excellent content here, both for student pilots as well as seasoned pilots. Thank you!
Thank you!
Great job! I remember my first xc solo and it was daunting He absolutely nailed it with confidence! Keep it up Mike!
Though this wasn't quite cross country yet, I'm pretty sure leesburg is within the 25 nm radius
@@spelldaddy5386 ah. Im in idaho so I know little about over there haha. Still. Great job here
@@josephstephen4295 no problem man, I get it. I'm not from the area either, I've just become so obsessed with the channel that I fly in the Orlando area in the sim instead of my area
Awesome job Mike! Like watching a pro. And Lewis...top instructor
It is fantastic to see how excited you get for your students. You are an excellent instructor and it shows in your students when they go solo. He had command of the airplane at all times and his radio work was quite good for a student pilot. It is even better than a lot of seasoned experienced pilots you hear on the radio. It is important because it is something that ATC judges you by when you first contact them.
I want to say that I know you had a dream of being an airline pilot. I know life circumstances threw you many curve balls. But I feel that you have found your calling. There are very few instructors that show the enthusiasm you do in instructing. Most have goals to become airline pilots and there is nothing wrong with that. But there is something to be said about someone who is dedicated to instruction. It shows in your instruction that you enjoy what you are doing and it is what your calling in aviation truly is. Keep up the great work and never lose that enthusiasm that you have for teaching. Your students will remember you always. I still remember my first flight instructor and how great he was and that was 28 years ago. You make a lasting and very important impression on your students. Congratulations and I hope you achieve all the success as an instructor because you, my friend, are top drawer and you deserve it.
Wow, thank you so much man, I really appreciate your kind words. I have definitely found that I gain more from helping other people achieve their dreams. It's such a thrill to see my people do well because it is truly a team effort. I'm enjoying it for now and we'll see how far it goes! Thanks for supporting man!
Great job Mike! The better he gets at flying the more “cycles” he can use for other things like in this case looking and finding other traffic.
Laughed within the first 30 seconds. Another great video! Congrats to Mike!
Really loving these videos, keep it up mate.
Great job Mike, like a pro !!!
I don't even know this guy and his touch down was beautiful and he handled the traffic so well I can't help but smile.
Well Done Dix as a CFI myself, I gotta tell ya, You got this!!! Buy Mike a beer!!! Awesome.
Nice work Mike!
More more more! Love this style of video
I did my first solo away from home today too! I made it back safely. Plane’s in good shape too!
Awesome job Mike! Great to see yet another student of Lew's successfully complete a solo! Guess he's a better CFI than he thinks ;)
Starting to get really excited for my discovery flight... going up in a Warrior on Monday!
You picked the correct plane haha thanks mate!
@@LewDixAviation Boo Hiss.. 182 is my bae
Excellent work!!
Great work. You're a really nice person. Very good style & natural communication. Keep posting.😎
Good stuff! I should do so XC solo soon, very good points. Me too need to work on checklists, I understand these things are the base and key to pass through the check ride successfully
Congratulations good job! Great instructor
Wow Great job! I hope to be able to do that some day!
Always enjoy your videos
I set myself limits for when I should fly nascent on conditions of everything including my environment. I tend to have unsafe habits of driving when I shouldn’t ( being hungover, tired, etc.) so I want to eliminate thinking I could do so when I’m flying. So one time I went to flight school hungover and knew without a doubt, I shouldn’t solo but we were scheduled for pattern work with an instructor anyway. So I decided to see how I perform. My landings were awful. I wasn’t feeling good or confident and as the feeling got worse, I handed over the controls and terminated the session. It really helped me realize how important it is to watch over yourself.
Great Job!!! Mike , and Great Instructor
Great job, we've all done that (pitching up a little too much and causing a balloon) but it worked out well. Nice!
Awesome pilots are made from awesome instructors, you sir, are definitely one of them!!!🙏
Awesome video! I like the commentary review. I learned so much from this video.
Thanks commander!
4:40 - Right rudder correction applied. Congrats on PIC Supervised Solo XC, Mike!
Q: Is it a thing from the past to stop in at an FBO and get a signature for the flightbook for Solo XC?
And give yourself a pat on the back for having him so well prepared. 👍
Thanks mate!
Great video , looks like the student did a good job .....must have had a great instructor 👍😁
I’m about to head out on my solo xc in 20 minutes, watching this helped calm the nerves a bit 😅
Great video! I really like the review format.
Thanks man!
Perfect vid as usually! Thanks for sharing mate.
It's easy to lane an aeroplane when everything goes perfect, the true mark of a good pilot is calmly managing things when it's not perfect. That was a perfect imperfect landing. Well done - he's ready to fly in the UK where true aviation occurs 😉😀💓
He was killin‘ it! He is already so professional, that I couldn‘t follow his radio transmissions 😂
Great job Mike! Its awesome seeing you progress and crush it!
The only question I have is what the hell happened at the end with the lady stopping on the runway?! Did you see it or hear on comms?
Great Job ...and nothing wrong with being the quiet type. I'm the same way, Did 5 hour cross country the other day and only talked when talking to ATC.
It can be blissful flying alone. No instructor or passengers to annoy you haha
He’s soo cool, nice one. I was taught to crab on crosswinds and I’m curious at dipping a wing into wind and applying opposite rudder? Not really sure I can get my head around that one, would you be able to explain the technique a little more at some stage? Loving the videos!
All n all successful flight great job
Lewdix, "I am leaving my headset, my gopros and my flight back, because I trust you.. Have fun brother"
Mike, "what about your flying eyes?"
Lewdix, "Are you freaking mad, not a chance in hell brother."
Was anyone else, besides me, watching the footie game behind Lewdix?
Great video LD, deffo top 1% ! =) very educational
Thank you!
Love this. Its great seeing the excitement you have on behalf of your student. Wish you were out of KLEE. I would do my IFR training with you. Keep it up man. BTW how are you mounting the rear center cam looking forward? Is there a permanent mount there?
Those radio coms did not sound like a student pilot! He would breeze through instrument well done!
Well done that man. Great solo ......✈✈✈✈✈✈
That was the greatest intro ever
😂 Glad you think so! A lot of time and stupidity went into making it
Like the new content, good to see you making new kinds of content!
Glad you like it!
I went to Leesburg from Bartow for my first solo XC!
1:40 I don't think those 2mm-Beards of yours justify the ZZ-Top-like background music! Also: Congratulations Mike!!
My man Mike good job
Very solid solo XC! 5:45 leaning the mixture, but as part of what checklist? I don't see it used until 7:30
Way to go Mike.
Nice Piper Skyhawk. Great plane.
Um...... what??????

Great video , The checklist you have on the foreflight looks somewhat different then the one I have on foreflight. Where is that from ?
It’s my own checklist that he somehow managed to change colours on his iPad
Nice job Mike!
Great video and awesome job Mike! Lew, do you teach students to make verbal call outs? That's one thing I noticed he wasn't doing which I feel helps a lot. Also, he didn't say "Welcome to the sky". Not sure how the plane was able to fly without that.
He’s been dropped because of it………….
Loving the Euro in the background. Belgium for the win
Belgium look dangerous. And Italy!
Well done Mike and as always, love your videos LewDix ! Would like to have your inputs on using EFB while in training (PPL) ! Here (Switzerland) in the flying school where I'm doing my PPL, not that it is not allowed but it is not recommended and therefore all the students never used an EFB ! Only maps, pencil, navlog and a watch, that's it !
Thanks man! I encourage the use of an EFB, only after you understand how to do everything with pencil and paper. Once those crucial skills are built, I introduce the EFB
This was a great video, and assuming your students are happy for it, would be good to see some more flight reviews like this
Fine job
Awesome for Mike! Bad for the poor lady on the Runway! A teaching moment for her :)
Absolutely 😅 She won’t be doing that again
It’s coming home 🏴🏴
Well done!
2:48 you forgot to say “handheld radio” lol
When you are training your students now, and I suppose it is for anyone learning to fly now, are the students learning much pilotage and dead reckoning in today's day and age of GPS, sometimes multiple GP's in the cockpit? I am not sure what is required by the ACS. When I got my PPL back in 1993, there were no GPS's or Loran on board any of the aircraft I flew and no portable GPS's at all. All cross country flying was by pilotage and dead reckoning (and VOR to VOR navigation via airways etc..) and pencil to paper with an actual written flight plan and watch or timer of some sort. Curious how the private is done now.
That’s a great question. I make sure my students know how to plan a flight by hand and have proficiency in using the paper navlog in the real world before I let them use their electronic for cross country flying. I feel it’s a necessity to know rather than relying solely on the easy stuff.
Hey lewdix,
Can you be my flight instructor?
Love the way you give training to student pilots. Its amazing.
Another fab video! Well done Mike, another great step! Could you tell me what checklist you are using? It's obviously not the Foreflight one which, while good, is a bit cumbersome for me. I'd rather it was all on one page like Mike is using there. I'm guessing it's just a PDF in the Documents section, but where are they from? Thanks :)
Thank you! His checklist is a PDF of my checklist which is on my website.
@@LewDixAviation Thanks chap, could you add an Arrow III checklist to your collection? That's my regular flyer, mainly on simulation for now, but your vids keep the dream of finishing my PPL alive :)
Between 14:04-14:05 the other airplane is actualy visible in the left bottom corner :D
If no one called him a student pilot, I would've totally guessed he was at least a commercial student lol
Yep!
Great video! If in hot conditions, how do you stop the iPad from overheating?
I've never had an issue with mine overheating. GoPro's however are another story
Nice
How much wind is too much wind for you? And how much is too much for a student in your opinion?
That was a close one
Nice. How many hours does he have?
Lmfaoo the beginning 😂😭😭
And remember, a good pilot is always......................................................watching Lewdix Aviation.
Got to go really high pitched when you say it too!
Insert Slow Clap GIF !!!!
I wonder how much it costs to be a student where this dude teaches at, seems very passionate about instructing.
What about carb heat on that landing? Is that plane injected? I didn't see he set it.
Fuel injected
Audi should give you money for playing their ad in the back
I thought you meant a real balloon. Doh!!!
