  • Our Kruger National Park adventure continues and we head up North to Mopani & Punda Maria Rest Camp. We meet up with my parents for a couple of nights and try and head to Pafuri, however the whole area was unfortunately flooded as a result of Cyclone Eloise.

    The bird shots with identifications in these vlogs is really special. I'm from the USA ,2X visitor to Kruger, and was just overcome by the very diverse bird life there. First time visitors come for the Big Five, but come back for the birds.

      I couldn't agree with you more - birding adds a completely new element to your trip and the fun of trying to identify birds is worth a mention too :)
      Interestingly enough, this Pafuri region is the most diverse (bird-wise) in the park, as it is a culmination of birds from Zimbabwe being on their Southern-most limit, birds from South Africa being on their Northern-most limit, birds from tropical Mozambique being on their western-most limit and birds from the arid West being on their Eastern-most limit. Really really fascinating & creates such diversity!

    Love Mopani. Got a long sought bird there at Shipandani. Waited 3 hours till 10 minutes to gate closing when a White-backed Night Heron came out of the foliage on the wall across the stream. Made it back into the gate with 2 minutes to spare.

    An incredible moment on the road from Crook's Corner back to Pafuri: A huge bull Eley had apparently tore open a bee's nest. I had encountered this rather testy beast on the way east from Pafuri earlier. As I was driving back to Pafuri I heard an incredible buzzing droning sound punctuated with constant sqeaking of Bee-eater's. I stopped and there was an open area to the river side. There was a constant cyclone of bees in a huge swarm. I closed the windows :) . There were Bee-eaters, Rollers, a few Starlings and Woodland Kingfishers all hawking the bees within a wild swarm of bees and birds . Incredible sighting.

    Made me feel so peaceful and a good deal homesick to see some of my favourite spots.

We don't stay out of the park too often except in Hoedspruit with Blair's family, and have stayed at Marloth Park a couple of times but it wasn't my favourite, so typically opt to stay in the park whenever possible or with family.

    What an engaging video! How are you not terrified when elephants walk by your vehicle??

    • @NicoleEddy1
      @NicoleEddy1  3 года назад +1

      Haha, I used to be petrified but Blair taught me a thing or two about how to gauge elephant behaviour and whether they mean business. Rule 1 is to park far enough away so they can see you from a long way off & not feel threatened that you're in their space and honestly more often than not they're more bark than bite :)

    Jus a question...do u know what all these birds are or do u research afterwards while editing ur videos coz i would be amazed if u knew their names or species by just looking at them😮😮

      Blair & I are pretty into our birding (and it's safe to say that Blair knows almost every bird in this region), so I've had a great teacher :) Most of them I know by just looking at them or hearing their call - but definitely still have a lot to learn!

    Seatbelts on, folks.

      Luckily the speed limit in the park is only 40km/hr and we're usually well below that when we're driving around. It's also no mandatory to wear it in the park :)

    Put your seatbelts on !

    • @NicoleEddy1

      I explained this in the first video. The speed limit is 40/hr in the park & we’re usually always below this as we’re constantly stop starting & I’m constantly moving from the back to the front to film and it’s not mandatory to wear belts in the park :)

    Must wear your seatbelts.

    • @NicoleEddy1
      @NicoleEddy1  3 года назад

      It’s not mandatory to wear them in the park & we average about less than 40km/hr due to stop/starting, filming etc.
