Old but gold!! Just what I needed as I'm fitting a shower pump and needed to tap off the hot feed. Cheers for this and the other videos too!
Glad to help!
Your videos have helped me out of a soggy situation on several occasions, and this one has just done so again (when the side of our cylinder sprang a leak). Thank you.
No problem FoxBox.
Greetings from Ireland Al, thanks for this video I have to change an emersion element in a steel cylinder that is inserted low down below halfway. It's ten years old and my water supply has changed to a hard water source in recent times. I love your videos, keep them up.
Hard water soon burns out immersion heaters, any way thanks for the kind comments. All the best.
This is fantastic, very easy to follow too and well explained. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Thanks Al for your free videos! btw nice video my friend!
+AMDRADEONRUBY No problem.. Al.
dereton33 great videos. just curious what's the wired looking probe on the cold feed into bottom of cylinder?
I need to replace the hot tap in my downstairs bathroom and there is no isolation valve, do I cut off water to immersion and open tap till it empties? Thanks
Yes or you can turn off the main and run the hot tap until it stops.
Hi Al, I hope all is going well? I really appreciate all of your informative videos, they have helped me out on numerous occassions. I was wondering what the best way was to descale the hot water system, do you have any advice you could share? Many thanks
The only way you will have scale in the cylinder is if you use an immersion heater in a hard water area. You can put various cleaners in the system but unless you live in a hard water area it is not worth it. The only way to get scale out of the hot tank is to remove the tank, take it outside and empty the scale through the immersion hole at the top. Now black sludge that is a different matter, use Sentinal x100 or Fernox to clean the system.
May I ask a question, I have to change the washer on my bathroom sink hot tap, when I shut off the water feed to the tank does it drain the whole tank when I turn taps on or just to a certain level in the tank?
Just the pipe and vent above the cylinder .
That was lucky. The last cylinder I replaced, the original plumber didn't bother to fit a drain off. Had to cut a hole in the top and siphon it out. As it was going for scrap due to a hole in the cylinder coil heat exchanger, this didn't really matter. I made sure that the new cylinder had a drain valve though
Well done Nick.
Nice and clear, thanks. Out of idle curiosity, why would the water kill grass?
I don`t know the reason why it does , only that years ago when draining a central heating system in a hurry, I got a complaint three days later saying the drain water had killed the customers grass.
Thank you so much. We have a small tank in the loft that I know is for the central heating.
Do I have to isolate this feed as well. To drain the hot water tank.
+Martin Loftus Only if you are removing the cylinder or doing any work on the heating system
My tank is rumbling like mad. I went on holidays for two weeks and forgot to turn off the automatic boiler. Came on every day for an hour. Any idea why this is happening?
Over heating.
Thanks for the video, unfortunately my gate valve is jammed, so as you say I could tie up the ballcock in the loft and drain the tank too leaving the mains on but the drain cock undid easily but no water is draining from it. Any suggestions?
Washer is stuck on he seat, use long nose pliers to pull it out, Have a few towels handy too.
Is this same process for replacing the shower pump?
Yes.
How often should you drain a tank? I have an old tank that has never been drained. It has a flange at the top for air but my hot water pipes sound like they have air in. I drained shower and all taps and it looked like it had air in hot and got bubbles.
Has been working fine for about 6 months before this problem (moved in 7 months ago and had shower pump fitted).
Just wondering if it could be sludge etc in the tank causing the air issue or if that is a bit too random
You do not have to worry about draining those tanks, we call them cylinders. As the water is changing all the time when you use your hot water. It will be something else causing the air.
Thanks a lot, really nicely done 🙂
Thanks
why does water from hot water cylinder start off cold?
The feed pipe from it cools down.
@@dereton33 Yes, of course. I'd figured that out, but thanks. So, the water in those pipes that has gone through the boiler is bad bacteria free (assuming 60+ degrees).
Why cant you just drain it from the hose into the bath or sink etc? Does it need to go downstairs?
It will not flow uphill.
@@dereton33 If it's about a foot high/up the tank can you just drain in to a bucket? I only need to drain the top of the tank past the TPRV (temperature/pressure relief valve) in order to replace it.
if I want to change my hot water taps on sinks/bath do I have to drain the cylinder ?
No .
dereton33 thanks , but still unclear as there are no isolation vale on the hot water pipe under the sink
Forget the last message, I’ve figured it out , thanks For your swift answer 👍
Cheers mate mine is old under house.
Good luck.
Its got no lever under there sadly
or tap sites connect hose.
But Thank you for your amazing video
gave me good general idea what I jave to do, Gratitude From New Zealand.
Gow do you drain it down if there isnt a drain off valve???
Disconnect a radiator valve.
But that would just drain the heating system down or would this drain the tank also? Surely the heating is a closed system. The immersion tank is purely for hot water??
Your airing cupboard layout is great. The house I’m currently refurbishing has the drain off valve on the side of the tank (right next to the wall). I had to buy a specific size imperial spanner to try and undo it as I couldn’t get an adjustable spanner in the gap. And then, the d*mn bleed valve just rounded off and wouldn’t undo. So in the end I got a hand pump to drain it from the top. Tedious to say the least. And now I’ve just realised I didn’t need to drain it 🙄 Thanks for the vid Al.
O no, never mind Nigel.
hi there, what if you don't have a drain valve? I've noticed one under my radiator by the front door, could this be it? Thanks.
Not if you have an indirect system
Thanks. Yes, I think it's indirect so the radiator drain valve won't help. How can I drain the hot water cylinder without a drain valve at the bottom? Cheers, Max
Could you run the pipe to the bath or toilet for water to drain. Just wondering.
Only if they are at a lower level than the bottom of the cylinder.
hi good one
Is it safe to refill tank if it is still hot?
Yes fine.
I've got 2 hot taps to replace. Is it better to isolate the hw feed, if so, what does tap look like OR use a freeze spray?
Isolate the tap. It is usually a red handle gate valve next to the hot water tank.
Thanks! I have a question about this. If I just stop the inflow of cold water to the cold water tank in the loft and open the cold and hot water taps in the house to fully drain the water, would this drain all the hot water in hot water cylinder as well? I just want to replace the current water in my cold tank and hot water cylinder with newly softened water without having to wait the few weeks it would eventually take.
Hi Roxy, this would only drain the roof tank, not the hot water cylinder, this has to be drained by a drain valve by the side of the tank, you attach a hose to it leading out side and empty it.
Hi I have an issue where in the morning I get a rush of water for a few seconds then i hear a sound from the loft and shower pressure goes down, how could I fix this will draining and refilling the cylinder do anything?
Draining the cylinder will do nothing. Check your roof tank valve is filling ok and if you have a pump , that it is working.
Hi Al,
I hope you can help?
We have got a gravity fed system and at the minute our boiler is not working as we are awaiting a part to be changed. As we have an immersion heater we are not quite sure how this works? If we switch the immersion on how long does it take for the water to heat up (1hr or 2hrs), I realise we can't leave the immersion switched on constantly. We've had a look and out hot water cyclinder is 116L. Also when the hot water is used up from the hot water cylinder does it then fill up automatically from the cold water storage tank. Can you please help?
Thanks so much
Hi Sarah, When switched on the immersion will take no longer than an hour to heat up all the water in the tank. When and as you are using the hot water, it will be replaced by cold water from the tank in the loft.
@@dereton33 thanks very much Al, that's really helpful
Hello. I have a bottom fed heater (200L) but there is no drain off cock. The cold inlet has a stop valve for the water feed.
After the stop valve there is another second valve connected to what looks like an overflow pipe. Problem is I cant get the second valve to let any drain off water through.....any ideas?
The washer is stuck on the seating of the drain cock. Release the washer and it will drain.
Thanks for your reply. I opened all the hot water taps in the house and the second valve on the tank inlet. The tank started to drain. Thanks.
Hi Al
I'm a recent subscriber to your channel I am finding your videos very interesting and clearly explained, I have a question to ask if you would be so kind to answer. I have a gravity fed system the boiler downstairs, above upstairs is the cylinder below the airing cupboard and above that the f&e tank in the loft, our cold water storage tank sits above our bathroom in the loft. How would I go about descaling the cylinder?
Turn off the main open the taps and drain down the tank in the loft then attach a hose to the cylinder drain valve and empty the cylinder. Them attach hose to heating system drain valve and empty heating circuit. Then you can disconnect the cylinder for descaling.
Al
@@dereton33 thank you Al
I have seen plenty of indirect cylinders where no one bothered to fit a drain valve in the first place!!!
Yes so have I.
nice one :D
Thanks 😁
you saved me the cost of a plumber , love it !!!
Glad I could help!
all my rads are grand but cylinder slow to heat up can you help
Check the 3 way valve.
thanks
Very good video. Easy to follow.
No problem.
