  • Here's the video of my return to Ardenwood. Unfortunately, I have no good footage of my previous visits. The Ardenwood Historic Farm Regional park is located in Newark, California, neighboring Union City and Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The "Ann Marie" was built in 1890 by H.K. Porter as a 30" gauge locomotive. She weighs 8 1/4 Tons and burns coal with a boiler pressure of 140 pounds. When she was restored (2005-2006) she was converted by her owner to 36" Narrow Gauge. Most of the historic rolling stock on site and in the collection was built by Carter Brothers Car Builders, excluding one former Westside Lumber Company flat car, which was the unlettered car in the train.
In less than 4 hours, this is the footage I was able to get, due to the short run and walking distances. At least 4 trains ran each hour to a run around siding about a half mile away. Note that neither of the steam locomotives that attended the event are owned or housed by the SPCRR (Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources).
Please visit their website at www.spcrr.org/
I will be joining their efforts soon.

I've had the opportunity to run this locomotive. The owners, Gary and Tom, are great people that did an amazing job of restoring her to better than new condition.

This 0-4-0st Porter was a big seller to mining companies, who needed a small enough locomotive to pull coal and ore from the top tunnels of mine complexes; the sunflower stack was used for both coal- and wood-burners to contain sparks to the smokebox - important in coal operations.

It's my Bachmann Spectrum Porter, full-size! You know, a special dispensation has been granted that allows you call these engines "cute," and you won't be drummed out of the railfan fraternity.

I have am fortunate to have one of the now out-of-production K-Line O gauge scale models of this type of Porter. I added an ERR sound unit to a small slope-back LIonel tender the engine pulls and it makes the engine sound just like the one in the video (chugs, whistle and bell!)
