Nail'N Scale is a name I think is really clever, and I have no idea why. It also looks like a pretty good game, like someone took Boulder Dash and Solomon's Key, with a little bit of Lode Runner in there, and combined them all. Although not as clever as your new name for Pin-Bot.
“Now it’s time for show and tell. Gameboy what did you bring?” “This is a puzzle game!” “Gameboy, this is the seventh week in a row you’ve brought a puzzle game to show and tell.”
Hahaha! Brought back terrible memories for me of how my 4th grade teacher hated me. I did an experiment on a tooth I lost where I soaked it in Pepsi for two weeks and documented how it eroded, and she kept me after class to say I embarrassed myself by showing a tooth for show and tell, saying "That's something a first grader would have done," ignoring the experiment I had read about in a science magazine for kids I subscribed to and acting like I had just brought in my tooth. She was very cruel. So this joke not only made me laugh, but also traumatized me with old, half-buried memories haha
Japan is FULL of games with names like that, especially in that particular era. More surprising to me is actually that it wasn't EVEN MORE explicit in terms of sexualizing the princess, as well as the fact that it got through on a Nintendo platform (Nintendo Japan was way less uptight about that stuff than NoA but they still didn't generally truck with overt sexual stuff), though the former almost certainly had something to do with the latter. As it is, I wouldn't be surprised if this version was a port of some MSX or PC-8801 game that got most of "the good stuff" cut out of this release due to space and content restrictions.
I actually played a bunch of Nail 'n' Scale as a kid. Despite being disappointed that the game was nothing like the cover art, it was still pretty fun and contained at least one dragon.
From that cover I'm imagining something almost like Bugaboo the Flea, where you use an awkward platforming mechanic to navigate a level while being stalked by a dragon.
As someone who has yet to watch every episode of Gameboy Works, I am still a fan of puzzle games. After watching the entirety of Gameboy Works, I wonder if I will still think the same.
Honestly a very big fan of Pin-Bot myself, so I appreciate the shout-out. Also, given the sexualized marketing, cabinet artwork and audio samples used in the actual "Bride of Pin-Bot" pinball machine, your joke is pretty much on the nose.
I just discovered that Pri Pri has in fact been re-issued on 3DS Virtual Console in Japan, so at least somebody thought there’s merit in keeping this game around.
Pri Pri is definitely one of those types of games that I can only take in short bursts. Not a fan of having to do things in "exactly the right order" and finding myself in fail states I can't escape from. Nail 'n Scale though, that looks like a lot of fun for what it is. It's nice you can shoot vertically. It just feels like it has a lot more flexibility, compared to other games in the genre.
The one thing I remembered about Nail'N Scale over the years is the way it was described in Nintendo Power as "I thought this was going to be a beauty parlor game where you go and get your nails done and then hop on the scale"
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer Ever notice that Heiankyo Alien is basically First Blood, except instead of a soldier making booby traps to catch gullible cops, it's a guy making booby traps to catch gullible aliens? It's also similar to Home Alone, where a kid makes booby traps to catch gullible crooks.
Interestingly enough, Dragon's Lair would have a Game Boy version that came out for the U.S. first in January 1991. That game, Dragon's Lair Legend, was easier in the European version. (from what I can gather on Wikipedia). Nice to hear Data East is doing well with Game Boy games while Sunsoft is struggling a bit on Game Boy.
Really? It's a Sunsoft game. They reskinned only one of their games (Hebereke/Ufouria), and 1: it only affected two of the characters; 2: it wasn't done to tie in with anything.
I use your series as a guide of which GB games I should add to my selection. The donkey kong '94s and SML2's are a bit too obvious and played out sometimes
Hey the GB library back then was also semi sequel/remakes of old arcade and microcomputer games too! Which was awesome. As opposed to Pokemon era library on it and its successors which was mostly kid license ip crap. Sometimes they combined and you could get Dexter's Lab but its really Elevator Action but those were not the norm I don't think.
With all these puzzle games, I imagine Jeremy Parish will soon become the smartest person on the planet. Will he use his power for Good, or for Awesome.
Okay, but what does Nail n' Scale have to do with dragons? They're on the box and everything, not to mention the Japanese version of the game's name, but the fact that you didn't feel the need to mention leaves me kinda confused. Was it really just a case of completely irrelevant boxart beyond the surface level?
I was laughing like a baffoon at the Pin-Bot renaming, but I feel like everyone missed the "Pri Pri ends up feeling flat" joke, that one was slick xD

But not just puzzle games, they're arcade puzzle platformers, that's pretty good.
@@TroyBlackford That's pretty damn unfair. I'd have given you praise for bringing in something legitimately educational.
gotta say, i love the shamelessly clever 'hidden' meaning of pri pri's name. these guys did NOT give a shit

Japan is great in many ways, but there sure is a bottom layer of creepiness and chauvinism.

Sunsoft all like, “Wow, we found some loose change in the couch cushions, score!”
Love this channel, love your work. Perfect mix of informative, funny, and well-presented. Hope your parents are proud!
You'd think Boobs the Princess was the name of the princess in Dragon's Lair if we're gonna keep the pattern going of mentioning that game today.

This isn't Heiankyo Alien!
In the end, isn't EVERY game Heiankyo Alien?
@@JeremyParish I managed to find a way to link The West Wing to Heiankyo Alien, so yes. Everything is Heiankyo Alien.

Maybe the real Heiankyo Alien was the spikes we made along the way.
That pudding explanation felt oddly intense...

I remember Nail N Scale! I remember it from a one-sentence blurb during Nintendo Power's bizarre George & Rob period.
One of the most beautiful game boy box arts.

iirc it was a gbc game, although it may have been a color compatible cartridge
Pri Pri honestly shares a lot with Hotel Mario.
Nail'n Scale sounds pretty fun. I'd kinda like to see a modern title incorporate that kind of gameplay.
Yoooooo I just remembered that Nail 'n Scale exists today and spent a solid hour trying to remember the name and find a vid about it!
Nail n Scale is fun. I stumbled upon it by accident and played awhile on purpose.
Pri Pri is no Cyraid, that's for sure.
Surprised Pri Pri wasn't reskinned as a Flintstones cash-in for Western markets!

@@JeremyParish That game was outsourced.
Taito had the license to the Flintstones cartoon, unless I'm mistaken.
More points for the sweet PinBot reference

Pri pri should have been released in the USA in the first place. 😀👍🎮
Nail'n Scale reminds me a lot of the mechanics to Solomon's Key. Is Spike equally as fragile as Dana?
for authentic vhs camcorder quality, drop the quality to 144p
