For practice I go to a public range. I draw my bow with my eyes closed and spin in a circle for 30 seconds then release the arrow where I think the target is.
I gotta say, for as low budget as this video is it's rather enjoyable to watch and listen to. A lot of people try to be helpful making videos comparable to these, however they lack the verbal ability to keep viewers focused. Some people compensate with production value, but you have the ability to keep us going with just what you say and how effectively you say it. Well done.
It never occurred to me that people might fear the string snapping back and hitting them in the face, because that's not how it could possibly work. Even if it was elastic enough to snap back, it would never snap all the way back to where you originally held it, because physics.
5:08 that is because the shock from the elastic force will be absorbed into the bow instead of absorbed into the arrow hence damaging the bow. Most importantly, never point loaded bow at anyone even if the string is not drawn. :)
The hardest thing for me was consistent head position. I often found myself either leaning my head into the string to find my anchor, or overcorrecting by pulling my head back. All of this head movement on the draw lead to inconsistent shots. I love these archery videos!
I like this guy. He makes the lessons easy to understand and lets you know that this is a sport that takes time and practice. Thanks for all the great info
Went out shooting tonight for my very first time. Seven of 38 shots missed the target completely. 6 got stuck in the wood frame of the target. 2 tips were so stuck in the wood they couldn't be dislodged, leaving me with just 1 arrow. No where to go but up from here! But truly, the 25 shots that hit the target felt amazing! THANK YOU NUSENSEI for inspiring me to take up the hobby and all the sage advice!!!
I love teaching archery at summer camps. They always make the typical mistakes at first, but seeing them improve is great. The broken equipment a real pain though
Liked the video for that intro, great video on basics man. I work the archery range at my local Renaissance fair and I see that agonizing 4 seconds happen and sometimes its even to the point of them wanting a refund. I greatly appreciate the lesson and tips!
The elbow turn is something I wish someone had told me about my first time. I went through twenty shots of the bow sticking my forearm. It was black and blue for like 2 weeks
"How do you aim?" "You don't." Yeah, that's why I am shoting almost instantly. What's most interesting, the first shot lands very often in pure center of target. But only the first shot :( Looks like my hands are getting tired later and I am starting shaking a bow a little... miss? part of fun, watching how far my arrow wil go and.. then go find :D
Hi, thank you very much for your short films ! You have a natural, easy to follow way of explaining things. So many vids on here are just garbled rubbish. I'm a huge fan, new to archery, only been at it approx 6mths & i have taken a lot of very useful info from your wee films, thank you once again nusensei !! keep it up fella :)
Thank you for this video. Very good tips. I remember being in a camp (few years ago) and did archery for a whole month every day. I absolutely love it! Was pretty good too, I almost always hit a bulls-eye everytime. (forget the distance, pretty far back though) One thing i never heard them mention was dry firing. So glad i looked this up as well as the twist of the elbow. I am 19 and will be getting a recurve for my birthday next week. I've been watching quite a bit of your videos and they are very helpful and I still remember my technique. I'm 5'8'' and 130lbs and am very athletic. I was wondering what draw weight do you recommened for me to use? If you do not reply it is fine. When my father takes me to the shop I will ask them for some advice on this. Anyway, thank you again for these very informational videos
Nusensi, thanks for all your videos. I watch over and over. My favorites are your "Reflections". I am 68 years old. MY ULTIMATE GOAL: TO SHOOT FOR GOLD AGAINST NUSENSI AT THE 2020 WORLD CUP IN MEDELLIN AND WIN! :)
Am pretty proud of when i was a kid. First shot with a bow ever. Hit the target. Not center, but i hit it. They told me thats actually really good. I didnt believe them, I MISSED! lol Ah memories.....
I was doing it in my back garden, the target was on a metal shed, I made holes all around the target in the metal shed but not the target, I was 7 using my dads bow, it was to tall 😂
Normally, the energy in the bow is transferred to the arrow, which is what makes it go forward. Without the arrow, the energy is transferred back into the limbs. The limbs aren't designed to take force from that direction, which is what leads to damage.
NUSensei that is certainly enough to crack a limb on a recurve. If I recall, a compound takes the 'no dry firing' to the extreme, and the limbs might actually shatter....
Thanks for doing these videos, it really helps! One sort-of-problem I'm having, that I can't find an answer to, is that I don't bother with an arm guard, because the bowstring never gets close to my arm. My shooting is straight, arrow goes where I mean it to go, and I've worked really hard to make sure my form is right. Do I just have weird arms or what?
Nope, you have good form. With correct alignment and arm position, the string won't hit the arm and it's not uncommon for people to shoot without an armguard. That said, it's still a piece of safety equipment, and is required by rule at many clubs and ranges.
Steven Morgans It takes serious idiocy to hit yourself with a string. I can't even fathom how it's physically possible. My arms aren't weird, I'm just not an imbecile. However, I do a ground-up pull because the pull weight on my bow is nuts and I have a shit back. OP's comment on ground-up draws is absurd. Watch any olympic archery event and you'll see a split between the draws. It's one of those instances where people like to prattle on about ancient ninja techniques versus practical usage, some people like to pretend they're ninja's, others just want to shoot shit good. Both can be as accurate. One is insufferable to be around. I'll let you work out which.
BaSH PROMPT "It takes serious idiocy to hit yourself with a string" No it doesn't. Your arm might be proper rotated but don't be an ignorant. If anyone who hit himself with the string is an idiot then most of the pro archers are plain idiots. Some people's arm is naturally in a position to shoot without hurting and some are new and haven't yet been told the right way. Not to mention accidental hits. Nowadays it's fucking easy to spot a teenager
I've been teaching my nephew and other family and friends and show this video to them one other point I show them is to nock the arrow with the cock feather (odd colour fletch) on the outside of the string, love you're video's and great for first timers 😎
I shoot a mathews vertix compound bow and I've noticed since I was strictly focused on form over my shoots to begin with that although I do use my pin as a aiming point its very much more instinctual shooting than just letting the pin float where I want to hit and then slowing pulling back on my release. I am able to get on target an fire my bow much faster than other people with consistent shots.
When I took up archery ,had to watch videos. I got a PSE knocked on here and been shooting by myself ever since I've learned if you video tape yourself it's easier to work on spot you need improving in
I mainly did archery at my school and was only taught how to shoot. Once I went to a summer camp, I realized that my school didn't teach me the form of shooting. I had get worse and fix my techniques to get better.
A couple of years back I did got ahold of a compund bow, I believe. First time ever seeing a bow in real life. An instructor taught me the basics and I was on my own. I believe it was the third or fourth arrow I launched it landed smack bullseye. It is still quite impressive although it was begginer's luck and I wasted 2 minutes trying to aim it.
My bow is a W&W Inno CXT. Regarding a beginning bow, this depends on how much training you have had, what you intend to do with your bow, and your budget. Brands like the Samick Sage and Samick Polaris are good starting choices. Have a look at my "Buying Your First Bow" series for more details.
The bow will break if you shot without a arrow because the energy that you put with muscles will not get released anywhere so it will get in the bow pushing it forward but you lock it with your arm so all this is transformed in tension of the materials of the bow, when you have a arrow most of the energy is send in the arrow shots forward since it is not locked in like the bow
That was a good job did archery as a kid now I'm 64 starting again like your comment on how to aim I was a natural then seem to be now thank you enjoyed it
very great video and tips thx for sharing. funny how you mention that you dont aim but feel and estimate the shot you gonna make and invisioning the shot before it s made. the essence of kyudo zen archery
I admittedly learned Archery first at camp and got hooked , then in college I took archery for gym credit which was taught by an archery instructor, I now live in Atlanta ( originally from New York City ) where there is no local archery range near me so I have not practiced in ages :(
chasing my arrows too the target was one of my bad habits. Ive learnt to trust in the shot. What you do on the shooting line will transmit to the target. Also chasing arrows makes you throe your bow and you start "torquing" the bow and you just end up with skewed data and no grouping to go by. I also find when thing are going really bad to pull the target to 3m and shoot with my eyes closed. this makes me focus on the shot process the use of the right muscles and not to chase arrows! ☺
great vids! i'm enjoying the playlist you set up of all your vids. thanks! i do have one question. i keep hearing about how dry firing will ruin the bow, but no one ever mentions HOW this will ruin the bow. i mean, how can an arrow, which practically weighs nothing, make all the difference to a bow's health as opposed to firing without an arrow? i guess what i am asking is, what actually goes on with a bow that is dry fired that does not happen with one that is fired with an arrow?
It is the transfer of energy that matters when it comes to having an arrow. Without an arrow nocked, the potential energy has nowhere to go, so the limbs absorb everything. With an arrow, the energy is transferred to the arrow, which is what projects it forward. That said, having an arrow that is TOO light will also result in a dry fire effect. Most arrows, however, have significant weight. Further viewing: ruclips.net/video/gPII-cFUKzY/видео.html
thanks! i went to the link. great info. 1st explanation i've heard so far that actually explains the situation beyond the "don't do it" stage. i appreciate your willingness to share and am learning a lot through watching your play list of these vids. i assume the above is somewhere in your play list and i just haven't gotten to that vid yet. will gladly watch it again as i continue to progress through your playlist.
I had as little many little bows with the succion thing arrows, now i got a 25€ Decathlon bow and i just simply love it, i still bought the suction thing because well, metal tip + spread mind = Something is going to have more holes than Julius Caesar
it's kind of weird i only have an interest in actual archery now. yet always loved it in a fantasy setting. Always use them in games id available. skyrim i always use archer build. Yet in real life i have not even tried it. Very weird.
I've done archery for 6 years now, and I don't know if it's a "Sweden thing", (because I've only met Swedish archers). But most archers I see draw their bow while pointing it upwards, and then centering it while aiming. (These archers are very experienced and shoot great).
Ha ! As a competition archer in my younger years, I tend to really suck at shooting without a sight on these team events / camps. Anchoring, alignment of string & positioning the sight bow are just too deeply ingrained to shoot barebow with any good results. 😂
Also, with the bow you're shooting, it might be style to shoot instinctive, but they you shouldn't have a clicker on it anyways. Usually, in the EU anyways, you shoot barebow or olympic recurve to aim, and traditional for instinctive. You aim by putting your arrow either slightly under, or exactly on target, but that differs per archer.
Thanks for the tips, went for my first lesson last week. They are the type of compound you said, a gun range that added archery. They gave some of the tips but not all.
In this video, it's the bone-shaped Easton arm guard (clear). I currently have a Beiter Soft arm guard, although I do shoot with a custom leather guard sent by one of my viewers.
Hey I just ordered and buy yesterday and it's coming in tomorrow, a cheap $30 Barnett Sportflight Recurve Bow Set, I'm looking to start archery and I enjoy your videos, I have a quick question about dry firing, why does it damage the bow if the arrow is barely like an ounce?
ray gonzales When the bow is placed under tension and then released, the energy from the limbs has to go somewhere. Having an arrow on the string means the energy is transferred to the arrow. Without an arrow, the energy goes back into the limbs, which aren't made to take that kind of stress (though modern limbs are more resilient). The same problem actually happens if you use an arrow that is too light.
Hey, thanks for replying and helping me understand! You've just earned a new subscriber, I shot for the first time today at a cardboard box from 10 yards and did pretty well despite losing two arrows... I can't wait to get better and upgrade my bow as my skill increases.
so thats how you aim... I was like always trying to find the spot on the bow and level with the target... but i didnt miss as there was an instructor...my third finger still got num the first time but its fine now
I think I got lucky for an armateur like me who don't know how to use the bow at all and the staff didn't teach you how to do so. I got lucky on not hurting my hand from drawing the string too close to it where my sister had it too close and suffered some injuries doing so. I slowly understand how to use the bow myself from trial and errors but the arrows is scattered all around lol Had really fun doing so think it's my first time and I wanted to do it again
I used to be able to just death stare at the Target and hit where I was aiming, but after not shooting for a year I had to buy a glue on sight. Back to bullseyes all day
Is it normal for compound bows to have to be aimed way way way off to the right to hit the middle? Ive only ever owned recurves and when i got my first compound, its aim was really weird but it might just be me. For example, i could only be about 6 yards away from a target but id have to aim like 1 foot towards the right of the target away from what it looked like and it would still not be enough to get it to go in the right direction. I made sure my form was good and i gripped it correctly but i dont know if it's the cam or cables or something. For my recurve, it was much different and i could aim almost everytime a bullseye from 15 yards away and it was 10 pounds higher in draw weight.
hi, I used to do some archery as a kid, and I want to get back into it. I just want to do target shooting, and im looking for a bow around the $300 price range. I personally prefer wood bows over fancy metal ones, but do you have any suggestions?
why are you shooting with your recurve as you'd shoot with a longbow.. the height aim is decided of where you draw the string and not by aiming. If you have a good calibrated bow you should see the tip of the arrow in the lower part of the center of your target so that you'd only see the upper half of the center cirkle (sorry for my not so good english when it comes to archery). well.. this is what I learned when using a recurve but with a longbow you're explaining it on spot! I suppose there are different ways of shooting and the right way for you to shoot might not be that right way for me. Though honestly I shot my recurve just as you explain it. Another question, why are you using a longbow tab(?) and not a recurve tab(?)?
+Eajra Actually it is a recurve olympic tab and not a longbow tab. Do you think that medievil english archers did use of tabs ? o.O They used leather-gloves as you should for your longbow (stylistically speaking). Going on, using a recurve olympic bow without a sight is typical of the category "bare bow" which uses the arrow tip as riferiment for aiming.
+eric fiumanò yeah, I use a minimal "glove" it sits only on 1/2 of my three fingers with some straps that keep them on but I don't use a longbow because medieval englishmen did, I do it then I 'don't have to aim' (not completly true, I more or less shoot on feeling) Yeah I had a barebow but in height I didn't aim, I used the height where I pulled the string.. if I held the string lower the arrow is going to hit lower. :)
I love archery and no I'm not good, just something I enjoy. I went on a school camp a year ago and my fingers were hurting so badly I had to wrap the sleeve of my hoodie around the string. Not fun
When I was like 12, my uncle made a bow out of some wood and old junk he found. I started to use it and he even tried to teach me something. We were pretty poor so we didnt have a target to he took a tiny branch and a piece of cardboard and stabbed them into the mud wall. I was so surprised because after a while I hit the branch that was holding up the target! I called my uncle and after a few shots, HE SPLIT THE BRANCH IN HALF.
Any special tips for a cross dominant person? I got a bow for Xmas last year and I have been having trouble with the bow because it feels weird to hold it with the bow in my leg hand.
Yeah, my first shoots were like WTF, where did it go, did I hit that plane? It was my friends bow, now I want to buy myself a bow but I want a compound bow, for 3 days Im watching only archery vids.
***** I bougth Ps4, im too big nerd, I will buy one for 100%. I wanted to buy Diamond Infinite edge, draw weight and length can be easly seted up and the quality is also good. Also I thing 20 pounds would way to low.
***** I like precision shooting, thats why I want compound bow. I was using 30 pound bow with no problems. On the Infinite edge bow there are 3 modes to choose, A 15-30 B 35-45 C 50-70 pounds, to set up diffrent mode you need a press, but when you enter a mode you just need screw to set weight, I wanted to start at 50 pounds, because Im preety strong and its enougth to do anything + I can easly set up 70 pounds and go hounting for tanks or carriers if i want to.
For practice I go to a public range. I draw my bow with my eyes closed and spin in a circle for 30 seconds then release the arrow where I think the target is.
+Tyler McGhee u hold ur bow drown 30 seconds before shooting?
Lol wut
i hope thats a joke
Thank you i'll try it
That sounds really safe.
I go to the gun range with my bow and arrow. Yeah I get stares but we are both shooting targets at the end
Mauricio Miranda do you use a pistol or rifle range?
Must b fun retriving the arrow
ThaReal CLo there's a fuck ton of places that don't do that.
very true
Fucked Gplus help train your dodging

James Kindrick the string on my bow snapped back and hit me in the face and it hurt so it's quit possible
@@chloerose2645 It didn't snap back, it broke. You got hit by the top or the bottom of the string, not the part of the string you were holding.
Don’t y’all sometimes get hit on the forearm with the string ? Shits painful
J Kindrick ...The BOW hit my face. And the string sometimes, that’s why I bought a new one and is now better scores.
Pet The bow used to hit my... privates. That hurts more.
Loved that first example of a weak draw :D
5:08 that is because the shock from the elastic force will be absorbed into the bow instead of absorbed into the arrow hence damaging the bow.

what are tge downsides of playing archery
i remember at camp, we did archery.
And I ended up with a long bruise across my right arm

This guy is a real life Uryū Ishida from bleach haha. Awesomeness.
I've been told that this is the only character I could authentically cosplay as.
NUSensei ....where are you come from??...where do you stay right now?
Australia, the accent and the housing design gives it away to anyone from, or has lived in, Oz.
yes I was gonna comment about him. I subbed for this comment he's also my favorite character
precisely what went through my head when he first drew his bow.
Just recently found your channel as I consider getting into the sport. Excellent advice and very well presented. Thanks!

Im 13 right now and i went shooting when i was 12 for the first time and must say ITS FUCKING FUN!
I hit the bullseye like me 5 shot ! I miss that 😊😢
At least you're good at something, because your grammar is terrible.
I was doing it in my back garden, the target was on a metal shed, I made holes all around the target in the metal shed but not the target, I was 7 using my dads bow, it was to tall 😂
Thx for this I have wanted to get into archery for a long time and his was really helpful
Ohh! I always move my stance after I pick up the bow, tilt my head to aim, don't form, don't move my left arm outwards, or aim down.
Wait a minute. This video is just full of good archery advice. Nothing about different tips at all!
Wow! Thank you so much for this! I came from reddit. Great tips and I'll watch the other videos.
I have been wanting to learn archery since becoming an Arrow fan last year.
Lol i want to be a pro archer cause of him
Right now the only thing i got is an bow that i dont know if real and some fake arrows. But i have big dreams with archery and really want a real bow
Thank you for your video. It was very enlightening, well done and clearly expressed.
Great channel bro, I bought my first bow today and am having a blast.
Please help: I have a 68", 28 lbs bow. Which spine should i use?
Thanks from Portugal
Why does dry firing a bow damage the bow? The only thing I see different is an arrow which doesn't weigh much. Just a noob trying to understand.
Normally, the energy in the bow is transferred to the arrow, which is what makes it go forward. Without the arrow, the energy is transferred back into the limbs. The limbs aren't designed to take force from that direction, which is what leads to damage.

DFX2KX My uncle accidentally dry fired a compound bow and the wheels flew through the ceiling 😑
J Cube media services Could have used bows which they didn't care about, or maybe very low poundage bows?
J Cube media services - might have been all-in-one fibreglass bows. You still shouldn't dry fire them but they have a far better chance of surviving!

Thank you, excellent. Just starting.
I am a beginner and these tips were helpful. Thanks.
And there in lies my fault, I keep moving my feet when looking down for the arrows.
chasing my arrows too the target was one of my bad habits.
Most arrows, however, have significant weight.

thanks! i went to the link.
Oliver queen sent me
Legit same XD
Garret that show sucks
lol same
Garret every time I pull back my bow I think of arrow lol
I got better at archery when I watched that show
Another useful and informative video. Thanks ;-)
Very weird.
I’m doing archery tomorrow with Girl Scouts and I can’t wait I’ve done archery once, but I kinda forgot! So I looked up videos hehe!
You from Australia? (no sarcastic comments please) Can't quite place your accent, I think Aussie but could be London.
1:45 _Firmly grasp it in your hand..._
Great video - thank you.
This video is very nice. I have learned many things
You should talk about string and riser alignment.
Great video. Thanks, helpful and entertaining!
Nice Job. Thanks. 5 stars. I say all this at least 30 times at week.
"Don't be scared" seems to be the most commonly repeated line I use.
I have pasted your link to my Bermuda Archery and Fencing FB page. So again thanks, its always to hear or read how others do things.
I used my bow for demonstration purposes in the video. I shoot Olympic-style.
Yeah, I nticed after re-watching, misinterpreted.
Thanks for the tips, went for my first lesson last week. They are the type of compound you said, a gun range that added archery. They gave some of the tips but not all.
0:07 those squawking birds in the background made that bit even more comical XD
Yo this guy makes it look easy to pull the string back
Well, with the right poundage it Is easy
I’m in my archery competition thanks for the tips
fantastic bunch of videos!
You got my sub man! Btw what arm guard were you using?
Nice video. What bow you used? Looks awesome.
What about holding the bow angled to the side like Russell Crow did in that movie. It looked cool, kinda gangster archer!😎😆
yesterday I had my first archery lesson, wish I had seen this before it bc now I have a serious bruise on my left elbow
So when you draw the bow back, is it better to pull it to your chin or cheek? I was taught to pull it to my cheek right under my eye.
Great instructional video. Well done!
so thats how you aim... I was like always trying to find the spot on the bow and level with the target... but i didnt miss as there was an instructor...my third finger still got num the first time but its fine now
XD i litterally loled at the first clip you showed and i dont even do archery!
I think I got lucky for an armateur like me who don't know how to use the bow at all and the staff didn't teach you how to do so. I got lucky on not hurting my hand from drawing the string too close to it where my sister had it too close and suffered some injuries doing so.
I slowly understand how to use the bow myself from trial and errors but the arrows is scattered all around lol
Had really fun doing so think it's my first time and I wanted to do it again
Thank u sooo much i found dis video very helpful (btw i will get my first bow soon)
Excellent video.
Why cant I just use two fingers?
Thank you...this was very helpful.
Excellent video
I have a hard time rotating my bow arm all thanks to the grip on my riser being a high grip. :/
That's not normal. It sounds like your bow is out of tune, and it may be your arrows being wrong.
NUSensei thanks because i was worried it was just me
hi, I used to do some archery as a kid, and I want to get back into it. I just want to do target shooting, and im looking for a bow around the $300 price range. I personally prefer wood bows over fancy metal ones, but do you have any suggestions?
They're all pretty good. I can't really recommend specific bows.
Thanks for sharing tips..
Btw I like your camo jacket. What style of camo is it, and can I purchase it online.
why are you shooting with your recurve as you'd shoot with a longbow.. the height aim is decided of where you draw the string and not by aiming.
+eric fiumanò yeah, I use a minimal "glove" it sits only on 1/2 of my three fingers with some straps that keep them on but I don't use a longbow because medieval englishmen did, I do it then I 'don't have to aim' (not completly true, I more or less shoot on feeling)
Yeah I had a barebow but in height I didn't aim, I used the height where I pulled the string.. if I held the string lower the arrow is going to hit lower.
+mateusz urbaniak If you're really into Archery. I recommend you to use a recurve first. Compound Bows are normally much higher in draw weight.
Windy blower I've used my friends bow a lot
Get the 35-45. 50-70 is too heavy for straight beginner. It'll enforce bad form and bad habits.
