Funny to watch them practice in summer cloths. Game time they are in their uniforms and move so precisely you almost think they are machines. This reminds you they are a bunch of very talented hard working young men and women !
im in my high school marching band in ohio also and our band camp was from 6am till 9:30-10 at night every day for two and a half weeks strait with the weekends our only break and it was hot af luckily band camp is over now and its just after school rehersals wich arnt as bad thankfully and also including the friday football games where we wear our uniforms and the occasional competition .... my band is a AA class marching band and we qualify for state competition
Sweet! I actually just talked to my band director, and I just started to take trumpet lessons, so maybe I'll make it into the band next year or in a few years. I'm really motivated to do this.
After watching the ride side of the screen starting at 2:30 and seeing the struggle of talented musicians and marchers weaving through each other I now appreicaite when the Fightin'TexasAggieBand execute the four way cross more than ever.
I never marched one day in a college band. Got drunk with plenty of them. But by "college band" was at Camp Pendleton, Ca. 1st Marine Division. In four years I went all over the south Pacific, Papua New Guinea, Sydney, Australia, Guadalcanal and other parts of the world too. Talk about hot. 110° with 98° humidity and full dress blues, Guadalcanal sucked. But not for why we were there. The 50th aniversary of the battle. I got to meet many WW2 vets that were there too. WW2 victory/campaign medals, 2 or 3 purple hearts and MEDAL OF HONOR. And all of them more humble than meager pie. Been all over the US and was a machine gunner in war. I would not change a thing or trade my time with anyone, not even another Marine. I met some of the most amazing people, (and dicks), I could ever have the pleasure of knowing and now, am friends with most to this day. If you are young, you have the whole world ahead of you. Live today as if it is your last. Should you do band in college? I think if you can and you don't you are a fool. If for no other reason than to just have fun. Studies are hard enough. But if all your fun comes from ridiculous parties and alcohol, you really are missing out. I do not regret one single day from the Corps and will treasure it forever. I realise college isn't quite like that, but it can be while you are there. You cannot join the band after you graduate. And I have been blessed to also teach for 30+ years. You get one chance, that's it. Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't or shouldn't do something. Especially if that person is you. And if you are so inclined, and can hack it, the Marine Corps will accept you up to age 27. But don't think for one second that they are going to make boot camp any easier just because you are the "old man". Or woman. In fact, those 18 year olds running circles around you in the beginning, a lot of them can't hang either. Marine boot camp has a very high attrition rate. My initial platoon was 68 on deck. On graduation day I was one of 14 originals in a platoon of 69. But the band field has more college grads among enlisted personnel. No other MOS comes close. I would say 40% of my unit had college degree and could have very easily got OCS and become officers. But they were MUSICIANS. Now, once they became Marines, they were first and foremost riflemen. Then musicians. And yes. Marine bands do go to war. As perimeter security for the commanding general. Which in our case included clearing enemy bunkers, live mine fields, watching prisoners, convoy security and living through gas attacks. Great fun...
I once lived near a college bands practice field. That is a dedicated group of musicians and band directors. And practice they do. The head guy had a megaphone and he wasn’t shy about raising absolute hell throgh it if someone was out of step..out of tune ..or just screwing up.
My marching band has the same marching style as the OSU band, except we have to "swagger" which means to sway left to right for each step we take, and we also do an armswing for EVERY right step, rather than every other. We even have a "Script CHS" which is similar to script OHIO but we spell out our schools initials of "CHS" rather than OHIO.
Love the first fight song they played. It’s Wave the Flag of old Chicago The University of Chicago fight song. With the Grand old Man to Lead us. Amos Alonzo Stagg. When the Maroon used to be the Football power of the Big Ten.
Thank you, George Werderich. I have heard our MB play this for years but never knew it's early Big Ten roots nor it's university origins. Much appreciated comment.
Why the over the top head movements when turning, surely this would increase a neck injury or s'thing? I had the great pleasure of visting the OSU in 2006 might I say it was very impressive experience. My time there was taking part in a programme for joining the 2000 mile harvest internship. Brilliant experience..😊
a little slip at 3:11, the girl behind fixes it right away, but the guy behind her doesn't get it and the right count is lost... her attention is amazing ! incredible multitasking, all of them
Dang it I knew I should've stayed in marching band after high school! But hey I got to work with the best marching band director in the world Phil Hatler! LOL
I am a sophomore who hopes to be in this band one day. I believe even right now I have the playing skill with a meliphone and the marching skill from marching in a successful high school traditional marching band to join this band and do well.
Ever been in Columbus, Ohio on August 16th? If so, you won't wonder why they're not wearing shirts. Geez! How small-minded can you be if this is your only problem?
For anybody who thinks that band is for sissies, take a good look and listen to this bunch. Note how they move so precisely and to the beat of very well played music--and not a fatso in the bunch. The ladies and gentlemen of the band are a credit to the university and their families!
+Patrick Templeton I know quite a few people with some weight on them ('fatso's) that has been in this band. They were amazing marchers and players. Too bad the other man couldn't see that it wouldn't have 'ruined' it or anything. :)
my high school marching band wich im in is a AA class band and we qualify for state competition and even we are not that good.... that just goes to show that osu marching band is the best marching band in ohio and the country
+PoetryMan11 Watch again. I just used this vid as an example of how fitness comes in many shapes sizes. There are reed-thin people, well-muscled people, and people who are distinctly neither of those things -- and not just the guys toting low brass.
For my money OSU and Texas A&M are the best bands out there and its a loooong sickening drop to #3. I'd love to see them on the same field. Script Ohio vs 4-way cross. You might have a pretty good football game break out, too.
If I were to join OSUB, marching with them would be so difficult because we roll step so its so different. We go heel then toe. Also, we were never allowed to face the away side.
I didn't see that until I saw your comment and watched the video again. I noticed that she turned her head and said something to him after that . . I wonder if she got mad at him.
You mean there are people in those uniforms? I thought there was just an eternal group of animated uniforms. No, but seriously, this was cool to watch.
I'm from Texas and I made the band. It does take a lot of work, but it is certainly doable. And I have multiple friends in the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band if you want their contact info.
bt25: it wasn't 90 degrees in August, it was averaging heat index of over 110. If they couldn't dress cool enough to stay upright (and I'm guessing even then there were a few who would go down) it would have been too much. Even my local high schools allowed sports attire (running, etc) and shirtless for the guys. It was FAR hotter than 90 degrees in the midwest, everywhere, this summer.
@@patrickbateman6682 not the point. The band had different standards for public modesty back then, even during rehearsal. Things were different on the buses or at parties.
Unless times have change a good number of the players you see in the band are woodwind players who check out brass instruments so they can march...I was at OSU in the late 80's/90's and I was surprised at how many ww players learn quickly enough to make it into the band....then again, that may be why the first time I heard the band "open" up I was underwhelmed by the volume as opposed to the set number all being actual brass players...just my opinion as I still think the bands sounds great!!
I wish we did not have to wear shirts in my band . it is so hot I wish I could just wear a sports bra. but it is a high school marching band so we have to wear shirts. :'(

You have to re-learn how to breathe basically 🤣

In my High school band we are not allowed to take of shirts because God forbid you see a mans chest. It gets so dann hot also.

What is the first song they played
Why don't any of the sousa's have shirts on? is it because they don't want to mess up the finish or it would slip and slip on there sholder?
Someone screwed up the H crossover and it goes downhill from there
All in all, well done!
Thats cause there is nothing wrong with it. If your in band you would understand that wearing a shirt is not the best option.
The band was no woodwinds and no women until, as I recall, the 1970's.
Seems pretty typical in any marching rehearsal I've ever been in, or attended.
what is the first song in the video?
Wave the Flag (Chicago Maroons Fight Song)
It's actually the Miami Marching Song, written by Raymond H. Burke, who later adapted it for the University of Chicago Maroons.
