I was there when this footage was shot and 24 years old at the time. Absolutely mesmerizing. I didn't appreciate what a glorious time it was, of course. So full of possibilities and no worries. SF was an adult theme park back then. Safe after dark. Very few homeless people living on the streets.
I just landed on this; I lived there from 1977 until 2022 and this film does a wonderful job at showing the city and its outskirts as they were. Also, nice music to accompany you down memory lane :-))
This video was actually taken the next year (1977) - the white multi story building in the lower left hand corner at 8:29 is nearing completion in it's construction (the old Bank of America Data Center), and was completed exteriorly in that year.
This is the year I moved to sf. It was so wonderful clean and civilized. Of course it had its problems. But absolutely nothing like how it is now. Thanks for the road down memory lane. Miss this place.
I was 16 in 1976 and not only were video recorders rare, reg cameras were usually used rarely, Bdays, Christmas, I never liked cameras, as a kid I'd usually get caught pouting, lol, but this is cool.
Nostalgia forgets all the wicked things going down in San Francisco in the 1970s. Jim Jones just to name one. It’s not perfect now, it wasn’t perfect then, a very interesting place to grow up and live.
I arrived in Aug. 77' stayed until June of 79' attended SFSU and worked downtown at Macy's in the basement at Mama's restaurant as a night time prep and closer. After work I would frequent Keystone Korner in N. Beach district or Pandora's Box just up the street where there was a strip club and jazz club. This video is a stark reminder of how cold the city felt to me at the time. I lived at Park Merced across from the University and took the bus to the street car, street car to the cable car at union square. The piano music is an eerie tribute to the cold feeling of living there, I was glad to move back home to San Luis Obispo, now it resembles a miniature version of SF.
Before Ronald Reagan closed mental health programs, before landlords were corporations, before plastic bags littered our world. Also, leaded gas causes brain damage. Regulations are Protections.

Ooh. Neat!!
9 years after the “Summer of Love”.
3 years before HG Wells visited SF in the movie “Time After Time”.

People well dressed, calm. We reverted.

Excepting for the growth of computers, internet, and smart phones (all tech), life was pretty much the same.
Wow! Awesome city! 😎
