Everyone seems to compare Rene Thomas to Jimmy Raney. I can hear the influence in the sonorously snaking lines in Thomas's lines. That said, I hear more Grant Green in Rene's playing. It's that confidently funky snap in his attack, his attention to popping dynamics, his ability to build drama by repeating certain figures, and his assertive rhythm--that's Grant Green! That's the Blue Note Records sound! I'm surprised Rene Thomas didn't record for Blue Note. RVG would have done Rene the justice he deserved. That said, Rene's got his own thing! I just ordered Meeting Mister Thomas, man it's hard to find old Rene Thomas records--especially where he sounds this clear (recording engineer thing, not his playing).

    Merci beaucoup au poster!
Was René one of those few guitarists who rarely, if ever, play chords within a setting featuring a piano, so as to not clutter up the harmonic background? (Grant Green... Sonny Greenwich...) I don't think I hear any guitar chords here...
    Amazing player anyway!
