Reminds me of the cheap "smart watch" I bought for £7 a few years ago. I only wanted it to use as a BT remote for controlling my podcasts when I was out walking (meant I didn't have to have my bulky phone in my pocket or take it out etc). When it arrived it turned out you could put a SIM card and a memory card in it, take pictures, video call, message, it was a totally standalone phone if you wanted it to be. Mad that all that could be squeezed into a not overly bulky watch.
I bought a $20 Blackview smart watch to basically use as an ultra cheap fitness tracker/heart rate monitor, and they seemed to be reasonbly reliable as both. 4 years later it still holds a 4-5 day charge, has kept its waterproofness through countless showers, hand washing, rafting and swimming trips, is a remote camera shutter button, relays texts and emails, can decline phone calls, controls media, does the fitness tracker deal, even has a built in breathing exercise timer. And it even has settings to change how it detects your movements to account for not swinging your arms when walking. It's absolutely incredible. And the supposedly legit Gorillaglass screen has remained entirely scratch free.
You say that, but this pen is probably on par with the tech that sent us to the moon. A dual sim phone, pen, fan, camera, and sex toy all for $20? I'd say thats a steal.

The device is a product of its time & possibly ahead of its time. A lot of people were looking for a small, mobile device that had multiple functions. I think that’s why cell phones got so smart. There’s even fan attachments for your phone.
Last time I saw pen that thick, it was one of those weird multicolor pens that have several color pen filaments in it with no way of really replacing them without destroying the thing.

What a cute and amazing but useless little novelty! I'm half tempted to go looking for one, just to have it as a talking piece. I can imagine the strange looks you'd get wandering around with your fat colorful pen up to your ear and seemingly having a conversation with your pen😆. Somebody must have set themself a challenge to see how many crazy functions they could squeeze into a slightly fat pen. I'm pretty impressed actually. Such a shame it doesn't do any of them well, at all but, still very impressive effort, especially for about 3 years ago. MP4 is a container, it says nothing about the audio/video encoding. It's possible if you re-encode the video it'd play using a different codec(probably avi given that's the output file format). MPEG is far more space efficient, but without a GPU in the little device I doubt it could play the videos without constant buffering(think using windows media player to play things back on windows XP, all video decoding was done on the CPU not GPU so it'd freeze fairly often while it unpacked the next few frames).

8:47 a really nice little peice of electronic engineering… I wonder how they controlled the fan motor (which is actually used in RC helecopters). Was it controlled by the phone, or by a separate circuit? Fascinated.
Only 25 years ago, such a device would have been the most amazing gadget anyone could hope to own if only they could afford it. Now that we now have technology that is so vastly superior we laugh at how "bad" this thing is. It would make a great toy, but after watching your very comprehensive review video, I don't have to, it was satisfying enough to see your trial and error results. Thank you!
Even though it's the correct file type, it's probably not rendering the video due to an unsupported video codec. The device likely requires both a specific file type and codec for it to run the video properly. The same is likely true for the music files; they need to be in a specific file format and have a supported audio codec.
Fun fact the purple tinge to the outdoor video, is a consequence of a weak ir filter on the sensor. Basically the camera is detecting a fair amount of near infrared light which is especially visible outdoors as a purpleish tint. Its especially noticable on some black objects, which happen to reflect infrared, but absorb visible light. I've spent an excessive amount of time tinkering around with small sensor cameras like this for use in planetary astrphotography.
This is perfect, the light entertainment i need, laughing at something that has no feelings and deserves to be laughed at. Also, good for keeping an eye on your objectivity. It seems like 90% of RUclips product reviewers lose their objectivity, or else they sell their souls to the "sponsor" or whoever gives them free stuff that week. I'm proud of ya. BTW, all those cheap chinese phones have dual sim slots, for people with "black market products" to sell. That's one way to put it. I was about to scream if that thing had a headphone jack.
Asians uses Dual Sim because they usually have two contacts, one purely for business, and one purely for families... and also usually to press on phone bills, some carriers offers better rate for Internet but have really bad phone rate, and some offers the opposite
Dual Sim is a great feature, imo. I have a separate prepaid Sim, I use for online dating and such. That way, I don't have to deliberate about whether or not to give someone my phone number. I can just have a completely separate phone number and associated WhatsApp account for strangers. Means, I can turn that Sim off or silence it, if I don't want to be disturbed, except by family/close friends. And if there's ever trouble with someone, I can just throw it away and get a new number.
Aww but I would love to have him shill craptastic mobile games, meal plans, BetterHelp, Bluechew, Earbuds, Website builders etc at me... Seriously though, I do not blame those wanting to get checks but on the other it is a loss of integrity unless they saturate the ads with sarcasm.
i'm really fascinated by things like this that can only take very low quality photo and video. i might genuinely want to buy something like this in the future, though i think the only reason i'd go for this over a plain old camcorder is just for the oddity of it
This is the kind of weird little gadget my dad would have loved. He absolutely wouldve had the same little giggles of amazement every time a new feature appeared
This was glorious. It reminded me a lot of the early halcyon days of the internet when companies just chucked all useless tech innovations into one device in order to show off. I really want one 🤣, although I'll face the wrath of Eva by the looks.
i like how the camera and microphone quality is not even that bad, like for that price and that small size i expected something much more blurry with weird audio but its pretty good if you wanna record something in secret in some sort of emergency
We do have smart watches. A lot of people thought they were dumb at the time of release but they've become very popular. It's only a matter of time before the phone/communication technology is condensed down to be as convenient and portable as possible.
The ghost of Iain Banks wants his pen terminals back. (Although, if you tried to contact one of his ships with this it would probably rupture a field laughing.)
Man, I wish phone/pen technology went this direction instead of the where we are today. What an interesting world it would be. :) When you got to the voice changer I started to think about prison phones, mini-phones that are small enough that you can smuggle them in your butt. (they all seem to have voice changers) This phone does also seem like it might fit in a butt.
There was a similar device in Star Trrek (also called a Servo) that was a phone / pen thingy, but that one had the ability to knock people out with it and stuff lol. Bring on the rest of Mr Shrimps random technology drawer!
3G will be switched off by end of 2024 and 2G sometime between 2028 and 2033. The problem being that the 2G network is used by things like electricity meters, cash machines and credit card payment terminals. The last estimate I saw was that 5.5M non telephone devices will need upgrading or replacing before the turnoff.
I'd love to see something in this form factor that actually was somewhat useful for its various purposes (declared and otherwise). I'm kind of astonished it worked much at all -- though I think I could do without the weird fan that almost certainly drains the battery level visually as one uses it. If I had nothing else, I'd be grateful for even this minimal functionality.
it reminds me of my old pre-android samsung phone. this phone also had FM Radio, but no headphone jack, there was actually a special adapter for the Micro USB that broke out the pins to a 3.5 mil jack, inside the plug was a resistor connected to the 'mode' pin (4) that indicated to the phone that the headphones were present. it's plausible that this is the same here.
When you first popped it out of the packaging, I immediately thought it was an adult toy. Looks like something unnecessary, but that might be my opinion only. I have a fully functional phone, a powerful house fan, and plenty of pens.
If only it had a light it would be ideal for emergencies! Its the sort of thing that those gadgets shops used to sell doesnt do anything very well but something us geeks buy!
@@RJ-wx3fh I seriously doubt that was the idea for the form factor. But I would love to see that business case for a product aimed at the prison inmate market.

"The phone is a phone."
"The fan is a fan."
"That is a pen."
"I am very smart."
Fan is a nice feature, I imagine it can get quite warm in a prison cell.
Shrimp, I started doing a night time routine of using grey scale before bedtime. Your videos take on a whole new level of kino in black and white.
That's not why there are dual Sim. Dual Sim is standard in r6 and areas in Asia, it's a cultural thing, it is not about drug dealers or whatever
@@GigaBoostI bet he's the sort who wants to abolish cash because "it's used by money launderers".
Anyone who can wrestle modern tech with its bare bones to nonexistent documentation is, in my humble opinion, a wizard.
If you put the phone on silent, does it vibrate? If so, I can think of another use for it.
Just remove the fan blades and glue a 1/8 inch nut on one side of the rotor hub 📳
I had this playing in the background initially and I was not prepared when halfway through I looked over and saw what shape this thing is.
i'm really fascinated by things like this that can only take very low quality photo and video. i might genuinely want to buy something like this in the future, though i think the only reason i'd go for this over a plain old camcorder is just for the oddity of it
This is the kind of weird little gadget my dad would have loved.
All things considered, this is a cool proof of concept. I'm sure as time passes, things like this will actually become common place.
Highly doubt it 😆
Uuh
We do have smart watches. A lot of people thought they were dumb at the time of release but they've become very popular. It's only a matter of time before the phone/communication technology is condensed down to be as convenient and portable as possible.
@@danitho lol
The ghost of Iain Banks wants his pen terminals back. (Although, if you tried to contact one of his ships with this it would probably rupture a field laughing.)
Once again. Great content and relaxing video from Shrimp. Even got to see Eva in 120kbps. 💟
When things are just getting on your wick..always escape to here .loving the comments.great channel.
Man, I wish phone/pen technology went this direction instead of the where we are today. What an interesting world it would be. :)
When you got to the voice changer I started to think about prison phones, mini-phones that are small enough that you can smuggle them in your butt. (they all seem to have voice changers)
This phone does also seem like it might fit in a butt.
Fortunately that wasn't part of the review
This looks like the final tier reward you'd see for your schools fundraiser if you sold 500k candies
"I could make a video with this"
Oh, please do.
This would be wonderful.
There was a similar device in Star Trrek (also called a Servo) that was a phone / pen thingy, but that one had the ability to knock people out with it and stuff lol. Bring on the rest of Mr Shrimps random technology drawer!
That's one girthy device there Mike, thank goodness it's not purple 💜
That camera gives me an inexplicable urge to watch a found footage film shot on it.
Is 2G even supported in the UK? 3G went away early this year in the States
3G will be switched off by end of 2024 and 2G sometime between 2028 and 2033. The problem being that the 2G network is used by things like electricity meters, cash machines and credit card payment terminals. The last estimate I saw was that 5.5M non telephone devices will need upgrading or replacing before the turnoff.
that camera might be perfect for recording a real-life Slaughter Valley video
I'd love to see something in this form factor that actually was somewhat useful for its various purposes (declared and otherwise). I'm kind of astonished it worked much at all -- though I think I could do without the weird fan that almost certainly drains the battery level visually as one uses it. If I had nothing else, I'd be grateful for even this minimal functionality.
When the colour screen came on I said out loud “oh look at that!” And then you went, “oh look at that!” 😂
i want a full youtube video on that little device
it reminds me of my old pre-android samsung phone. this phone also had FM Radio, but no headphone jack, there was actually a special adapter for the Micro USB that broke out the pins to a 3.5 mil jack, inside the plug was a resistor connected to the 'mode' pin (4) that indicated to the phone that the headphones were present. it's plausible that this is the same here.
I can see this as a great gag gift for techie friends or those families that do "odd and under $25" gifts for holidays or birthdays.
I just bought one ,pretty good, once you get to the fm radio u can search for channel manual or automatically and is loud even with the calls.
As many have pointed out already, this is the perfect size and shape for sneaking into prison
But the shape is so... suspicious 😂
@@danithowell what do you think how smuggling works?
Reminds me of The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver! 😁 Thanks for sharing!
Jack of all trades, master of none?
That video footage was exactly the same resolution as the 1960s moon landing, impressive! 🤣
I'd love to see Wade at DankPods review this frankenpen. I wonder what he'd make of it 😂
An Atomic Shrimp + DankPods collaboration is what the world didn't realise it needs!
Interesting device, certainly nothing like I have seen prior. Thanks for sharing.
When you first popped it out of the packaging, I immediately thought it was an adult toy.
Looks like something unnecessary, but that might be my opinion only. I have a fully functional phone, a powerful house fan, and plenty of pens.
If you tape some weight to a fan blade, you'll get that function too. ;+)
It’s a prison phone
If only it had a light it would be ideal for emergencies! Its the sort of thing that those gadgets shops used to sell doesnt do anything very well but something us geeks buy!
@@zakr1187 yeah, i'm presuming the idea is... rectal concealment...hence the adult toy looking form factor.
@@RJ-wx3fh I seriously doubt that was the idea for the form factor. But I would love to see that business case for a product aimed at the prison inmate market.
