Esen Level Crossing

Wednesday June 26 2024 at 9.45. The 8.51 Antwerpen-Centraal to De Panne (10.08) train. Esen is a village with a large church just past the crossing on the left and a brewery "The Mad Brewers". This is the 19th level crossing on this line. Something very nasty happened here as there is one grave in the churchyard containing the bodies of 49 local people who were murdered by the Germans just a couple of weeks before WW1 ended. Judging from the carriage decoration on the thumbnail, there may be a hole in the railway depot fence. Note the immaculate left turn on to the main road at the end.
