SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for my young troops here in the Philippines. Genuine fuel tabs from any brand are all imported and very expensive. For demonstration & practice, we use an assortment of aluminum bottle caps and other small containers with chaffing dish fuel that we purchase in bulk. The gel is available in packages ranging from 5 Kg (about 11 lbs) up to metal buckets of 12 Kg (about 26.4 lbs). With practice, you know what size container needed to get the water hot or food heated. An empty plastic dish detergent bottle is our dispenser. A portion of the savings is applied to the purchase of solid fuel tabs for trips and emergency use. Enjoyed you video and where you took the whole process. Watching from our "secret" retirement location in Bulacan province, Philippines.

take the bottom of the altoid tin and a hammer with a block of wood. flatten out the lid hinge points. after the wood block, take a flat tip screwdriver & hammer to flatten out the crimp edge on the bottom of the hinge area. have done this with a couple of mini altoid tins to close up this opening in the side of the bottom.

You and I both are followers of Kent Survival and Simon, a Bloke in the Woods. Their cooking videos seem to draw from two inspirations: what they want to cook and what kit they want to demonstrate. ANDY surprises viewers with a colorful variety of fresh vegetables and by packing nutrition into his small meals. SIMON uses a number of minimalist pieces of cook kit: the small grill on a spike cast iron set that is easily packed; the grill with the multi-folding legs, a packable table to keep food and prep off the ground, and so on. When my young family was backpacking, I would bring lamb or pork kebabs, onions, and bell peppers in a marinade to grill the first night out. The family also liked thinly sliced dried beef in a soy-based marinade that was steamed with Basmati rice to make a meal. We favored sugar syrup glazed fruits such as semi-dried prunes and apricots and dates as a dessert/snack. My tip here is to avoid ones that are blanched in sulfur solutions. Pay a little more for a gourmet product; enjoy a whole lot more on the trail.

@@jamesellsworth9673 Trying to figure out how to please the viewers and entice them into watch all the way to the end is a real challenge. the average viewing time for this one was around 13 minutes. I "know" I'm suppose to say what all I'm going to do in the video at the beginning but I always forget. Doing the videos during the school year has been a real challenge. Adding little league baseball (my grandson we're raising) and my college courses has just added to my mental chaos. Altoid tins are classic camp kit. You found another outstanding use for one! I was impressed by how relatively evenly the rectangular Esbit pan and gel-fueled cooker heated. Pancakes need gentle cooking to allow for a good rise and a fine texture. Your setup and timing were just about perfect. I admit that I use maple syrup to add moisture to my finished pancakes. It is not just for the flavor.

Thank You James! Most of the time I camp, it's in the middle of nowhere and I tend to camp alone. I usually pack food that is quick and easy and requires little to no cleanup. Since I started doing these videos, I've found cooking is very popular. My wild camps are now planned for filming, so, it has changed how I camp. I, therefore, will begin to plan for cooking at least one meal per day. I will be eager to receive tips, ideas, and advice, Thanks for the syrup/moisture tip! I'll try to be as creative as I can to keep things "interesting"😉👍 Be well my friend!

Very nicely done! I am also experimenting with a similar situation, but using Sterno type chafing fuel in an Altoids tin and an Esbit folding stove. ➡ If you want to be able to extinguish the fire quicker, try pinching the tabs on the base of the tin. It will make a better seal. And if you have any foil tape, or a piece of thin sheet metal, you can fully seal the holes.🔷Really appreciate the channel!

Great video..thinking about picking up this Esbit cook set prior too finding you review. Now for sure it's a must buy item. One Quick suggestion; don't put any honey or syrup into your mixture will always stick to your pans. I have had the smaller Esbit pan for years..& still use it at times. However I've been useing those non-stick cooking / baking sheets cut down to fit the pan and lid. Works great for eggs..fish & anything that's prone to sticking to aluminum. Honestly I've put chesse on these mats and cooked them till slightly browned and they just come off in one piece of cheese brittle. FYI

Zachariah, Thank you so much! thank you for the syrup/honey tip! Much appreciated!
