Are you on Android 10? If so, then you're out of luck. I'm using an A21 on Android 10, and I couldn't use custom fonts/emojis either. The app said it only supports Pie 9.0 as the latest Android version.

guys if your on a Huawei p30 Pro like me. download it apply it then go into themes press the me option bottom right choose text and choose the zfront3 option
