You are by far the best warhammer gaming side of things youtuber I’ve come across. You explain things in simple easy to understand ways, and just tell it how it is, giving your opinions and such. Idk, when I saw some of the other how to play videos and they were these big fancy tables and shit while they’re saying “now you don’t need all this” and such, it feels weird I guess. Seeing just simple backgrounds and text is nice. And your voice also brings so much to these videos, you just feel like one of the mates explaining to his friends how to get into something he likes, which I love
For Terrain, Midwinter Mini's has a good video Called Sprue Terrain, where he shows how to make scaleable terrain using cereal boxes and the sprue frames left over from your minis. Hell of a lot cheaper than official terrrain and if youre creative, can be just as good. Edit: He uses PVA glue, super glue, plastic glue and a hot glue gun, so its not pick up and assemble as such, but its still a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to tailor make for your own table than spending 30-40 quid on a burned out building frame
For list building I'd suggest going the SEO Winters route and recommend simple triplicate unit lists, emphasizing that if someone collects a little bit of everything it'll be hard for them to have a cohesive list and struggle to learn from it. For playing I'd cover how important deployment is and simple examples of how strategic reserves/infiltration/deep striking can be. I'd maybe consider a philosophical video explaining the mentality and attitude of tabletop gaming, how it's unlike video games, that it's a slow moving hobby, it's pretty much an unfair game and that balance tends to be wonky because it's a cyclical release structure. Also that 'pile of shames' and burn out is common. The point is that so many people jump right in and then get shocked when they find out that it's not really convenient and can be a mixed bag, requiring a little more from people than the average entertainment. I'm way too harsh to really explain these things to people but you tend to have a diplomatic approach.
I dont think you know vidya games if you claim TTG's are unfair compared to them (assuming thats why you mentioned them in the first place). most often than not vidya games are purposefully made to be unfair since the player would then easily exploit the AI/game mechanics and have no challenge (and fun) with the game. I'd actually argue TTG's are more fair than videogames since they have a certain common playing ground. Fighting games are the most comparable and you see the same balancing issues in those games too. I'd actually go as far as to praise the final state of balance in 9th and am expecting even better results in 10th. that aside, i do agree with all the other points made.
@@pepi560 Video games with a focus on multiplayer are hotfixed or patched regularly, sometimes on a weekly basis or even more often. 40k is not. Video game developers of said multiplayer games make it a priority to micromanage and focus on balance, GW does not. 40k also has a cyclical and staggered release schedule, not simultaneous releases, which is on purpose, resulting in 'flavor of the month' factions while others are left in the dirt because things just didn't pan out as planned. There are quarterly updates in 40k that sometimes address and fix issues, but sometimes overcorrect or don't help at all. The downsides are obvious, you might sit with a less viable faction for a long while (8 years if you played Warhammer Fantasy), but on the positive it keeps the game fresh and interesting. Singleplayer has nothing to do with this, I'm a little baffled why you'd even assume it did. Prepare for index hammer to be total chaos and one of the least balanced periods in 40k history until there's a handful of codex' out :) I suspect 10th will have much bigger issues than 9th for the simple fact that GW will have to micromanage a couple of hundred detachments instead of the living framework of 9th that was player balanced. People will be pigeon-holed into 1-3 detachments and since datacards are a thing now that GW have said they don't want to change, there will be 'objectively best' units for a long time, making fun lists and less optimized lists largely non-viable. Obviously this is not guaranteed, but it's my prediction. And I'm pretty much always right about these things.
@@Smilomaniac depends on the video game. if we go back to the fighting games example, you definitely have the "flavour of the month" thing whenever a new character is released as DLC. The update timeframe of balance patches is roughly 2/3 months which is similar to the balance dataslate GW has been releasing. Furthermore, if you take an e-sport game for which your claim is the most applicable to, you will see that sure, there are small patches more often than the shortest update to 40k, but these are most of the times patches for bugs (things you dont have on the table). the overall balance cycle is still several months in the form of "chapters"/"seasons"/etc. which give it a shakeup like GW would with 40k. for the sake of my fun i do sincerely hope youre wrong on the 10th ed prediction this one time
@@pepi560 10th will be plenty of fun if you can intuit how your faction will work and understand that we'll start off in a tank meta (specifically that you'll be best served by taking tanks to take out tanks, while infantry will be far less effective against them). One big tip I would give new comers. Only get 1 box at a time, unless you are getting premade things from eBay or the like. I’ve seen too many times people buy a 1,000 point army all at once only to have it never be assembled because it’s so overwhelming to put together 30+ guys. Just start with 1 box and fully assemble it. You don’t have to paint it, but don’t get anything new until what you have is assembled!
This is exactly what I needed after all the in-depth rules reveals, thank you. That got very confusing after a while. I'm really hoping I can get the Leviathan box so I can fully learn the rules.
Small sidenote/correction for the nice to have section. Instead of D20s try to find spindown dice. I've only seen them from MTG but they're basically just D20s with all the numbers in order so you don't have to spend a minute every time trying to find the number you want. Absolutely not necessary but well. nice to have
**goes in to buy £35 starter set** GW employee: You will also need this rulebook, these two codex books, these 20 paints, this brush set, this undercoat spray, these clippers...
What is absolutely essential, is that you need Orks, and lots of them, I mean you need all of da boyz, and then you can Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I won't Lie. This the first time hearing about how to play this game after 2 years of buying - A Second hand painted army of Necron (sub 1k points) - At least 20 dark angel marines - 5 Krieg infantry - 5 Ork Nobz + Painboy - An AdMech Combat Protocol
Great video and you definitely did cover a lot of the stuff I really thought you would. But I do have a question right off the bat. So it may exist (I haven’t seen it yet) but why are there no tokens? So like wound tokens and stuff like that? Because obviously the named characters and also bigger models have more than one health. Some have 5,6,7 and so on. But if you get 2 out of the (let’s just say) 5 wounds on a target you should have tokens to put down somewhere to say “hey, this thing isn’t at full health”. I’ve seen people use one of their dice to do this but depending on how big the game is you could literally have 10 or more dice on the board that you now can’t use because they are now wound tokens. I don’t know, I would think GW would make something for that. You know, because of money! It might just be me and no one else thinks of these things. It could be the fact that I was probably spoiled by the fact that my actual first minis game I ever played was way easier to learn and understand and also they had all of this stuff! Either way I really hope I can finish my armies soon!
@auspextactics it may be better to steer people towards new recruit rather that battlescribe as a third-party list builder as battlescribe has been largely abandoned for the past 3 years
So I’m a bit confused as to how sub factions will work… I play Biel Tan Eldar, so will their prior sub faction rules be replaced with Biel Tan detachment rules? Or will old style subfaction rules still be around?
Only started learning all this ish today (after a 30yr GW hiatus) but any faction added as a detachment to the main faction will just share the main factions rules I hope I got that right 😂
Awesome video Auspex! New to the playing element of the hobby so this has really helped along with other of videos! Overall how does everyone feel about the changes to the game and their armies structures/game styles? Keep up the great work!
Between 9th and 10th you mean? So far, only awesome news with the one big exception of the psychic phase being gone. But we don't have previews of the truly psychic armies yet, so I'm holding my breath. Everything else looks very smartly reimagined.

I'm still pretty sure I'll be using Wahapedia for all my rules. It's maddening that GW can't create a better solution than one Russian bloke with a website.
Yea like another combat said. GW never has a proper box available for a beginner entering the hobby. They could easily keep printing the launch boxes but they wouldn’t be able to rip us off with the rest of the line up then…
My only tip for new players to the game would be DO NOT META CHASE its changes so often and so much that will cost a fortune to keep up with and also meta armies are only that good if you know how to use them if you dont they're a bit better than average but a skilled player will still win
Auspex sometimes you over use qualifying words… for example, six sided dice are not “fairly” essential, they are just “essential”. No big deal lol, just something I’ve noticed over time. It reminds me some of how we were taught to speak in law school (American law school), to avoid being provably wrong. Then again we all have our own little speech nuances.
I dunno, the rules and such are easier to access in the sense that some umbrella codecies are free PDFs now. But all the extra shit with stratagems and drawing cards and shit seems pretty convoluted and only serve to justify making a new ruleset (same with 9th)

Oh my gods yes we needed this one for newbies like me, 3 months of lore and how tos this was the piece of puzzle I'm missing
What a great video. Just getting started can be a bit of a hurdle for some, this is truly helping the community.
I'd love to see a video like this covering what one would need/what to expect in a tournament setting.
Honestly best channel for new players to ease themselves into this daunting hobby. Very good video in particular, i hope you will continue going over individual units updated for 10th edition once that lands 😊
"Dice" ::Looks at his bag with 200+ dice for DnD, Exalted (D10) and Shadowrun (D6):: yea that's one thing i won't need to look into
Your the best! Thank you for this!
This is awesome and the exact series I need.
Creating a guide to play a game that hasn't even been officially released yet... This feels perfectly on brand for Auspex
The first thing you need is a psychological evaluation to find out why you’d want to get into this crazy hobby. 🤪
Thank you for all the content! My friend and I will be playing for the first time with 10th and all of these videos have been very helpful.
Absolutely not necessary but well. nice to have
I wanted this exact thing. Thanks.
I do wonder if Auspex Tactics eats; I already know that he doesn't sleep.
Eat is for the weak
He's powered by the fumes of poly glue, he drinks paint. In the Grimdark current there is only upload cycle :)
@@sturat5166 Abominable Intelligence call the Ordo Hereticus :D
**goes in to buy £35 starter set**
GW employee: You will also need this rulebook, these two codex books, these 20 paints, this brush set, this undercoat spray, these clippers...
Only buy miniatures or paint pots from them
@@AngusBeef0 And even then, there’s more affordable paint options.
I love you are doing this type of video.
planet bowling ball...this made my day
What is absolutely essential, is that you need Orks, and lots of them, I mean you need all of da boyz, and then you can Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Great vid. Ideal for me I currently play aos but always wanted to try 40k for a while now so I'm jumping in with black templars for 10th
Happy to have you! Looks like a great time to jump in.
@@NvRDeadNed well I guess the learning curve won't be too steep for me then 🤷
Thanks for the video...... it was really helpful. i hope you upload more..... thanks again...
I needed this video! I want one of my work buddies to get into 'Nids so we can split the 10th box
You deserve a lot more subs and views!!
What would a faction with total opposite playstyle to blood axes be?
Another optional item is a friend to play with. Dont know where you can buy those from however.
At least you wont need a spreadsheet to track your rules anymore
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So it begins
Can you play 40k with Models the Rules, and codex Data Cards? And forget about the updates? Say, Space Marines Vs Orks or Tyrannids?
Love it❤! Forwarding to friends
I won't Lie. This the first time hearing about how to play this game after 2 years of buying
- A Second hand painted army of Necron (sub 1k points)
- At least 20 dark angel marines
- 5 Krieg infantry
- 5 Ork Nobz + Painboy
- An AdMech Combat Protocol
Not to mention the amount of terrain you can print!
@auspextactics it may be better to steer people towards new recruit rather that battlescribe as a third-party list builder as battlescribe has been largely abandoned for the past 3 years
Great idea for a video
Where is the free download of the core rules and the faction rules available from? Please help I'm terrible at trying to search the Internet 😅
So I’m a bit confused as to how sub factions will work… I play Biel Tan Eldar, so will their prior sub faction rules be replaced with Biel Tan detachment rules? Or will old style subfaction rules still be around?
Only started learning all this ish today (after a 30yr GW hiatus) but any faction added as a detachment to the main faction will just share the main factions rules
I hope I got that right 😂
I know how to play but I comment to boost the algorhytm so more people can see!
What if i want to play a faction that don't have 10th edition codex, like Sisters? Where can i find the stats ect. ?
How much power and points value for combat patrol and boarding patrol? And how to access the arny builder in the Warhammer website?
Awesome video Auspex! New to the playing element of the hobby so this has really helped along with other of videos! Overall how does everyone feel about the changes to the game and their armies structures/game styles? Keep up the great work!
Between 9th and 10th you mean? So far, only awesome news with the one big exception of the psychic phase being gone. But we don't have previews of the truly psychic armies yet, so I'm holding my breath. Everything else looks very smartly reimagined.
@@Giby86 which army do you play?
@@LordCommanderJoe Imperial Fists and Tau. I just started collecting Thousand Sons before they announced the change with psychic powers, so you can imagine I'm extremely interested in how that develops! I haven't played any games with them in 9th and I've decided to just wait for 10th to avoid making comparisons...
Do you know if there is a release date for the new big box or the 10th edition?0
I'm still pretty sure I'll be using Wahapedia for all my rules. It's maddening that GW can't create a better solution than one Russian bloke with a website.
Yea like another combat said. GW never has a proper box available for a beginner entering the hobby. They could easily keep printing the launch boxes but they wouldn’t be able to rip us off with the rest of the line up then…
Awespme video!
what Will happend to Boarding Patrols?
When is the official release?
i would never suggest 3d printing. That takes away from your local brick and mortar, which is already a struggling market
can you do a terrain in depth video? i want to know what terrain i need. how much? and what are some cookie cuter lay outs for it
Don't we all... don't we all....
Except the minis are just money sinks, if you are responsable, use ANY other equivalent for the minis unless you arent rich
My only tip for new players to the game would be DO NOT META CHASE its changes so often and so much that will cost a fortune to keep up with and also meta armies are only that good if you know how to use them if you dont they're a bit better than average but a skilled player will still win
Does anyone know whether the Primaris Company Champion will be part of the standard Space Marine Codex in 10th?
He didnt post for the chaos knights . . . I hope he is fine :(
Yes, bit worrying
@@petestead2737 the fact that it is 14h by now makes it crazy scary.
I hope he is ok
And a Partridge in a Pear Tree
Recent fan of the series , sadly linving in south america makes it very expensive to buy models and cloae to imposible to find ppl to play with ..
Gotta stay with the lore /video games and even cell games , the actual table top is out of reach .
GW could do a lot more money if they put their table top online with a montlhy sub..
Still subscribed and love your videos!
i found out that places have there own terrain
Hope I win the big box so I can play 10th!
poker chips, the best OBJTV MARKERS, 😆
someone needs to make a new battlescribe for 10th, ditch that abandonware
Thanks to you I am now £700 into this hobby… I need help
These board sizes thing causes problem 9foot table wtf 😑 +4foot wide table are hard to find +it say's recommended size. So not obligated?
90inch is not 9 foot, 12inch = 1 foot so 90" = 7.5ft table
which youre realistically never going to need for a "standard" game of 40k. if you do, you probably already got it covered.
@@pepi560 7.5foot table don't exist either 🤦it say's in the rules for 3000point game you suddenly need a table with another foot and a half. Listen and read first
@@pieter-janvandevoorde852 ik las "9ft table" en zei dat het dus niet 9ft is.
bovendien is de 44x90 al de hele 9e ed al een ding voor 3000pt games dus ik snap niet goed waar je het over hebt met "suddenly need a table with another foot"?
Snacks! And spare time!
You need a resin 3d printer
Its funny how the game isnt even out yet
As a new player, I know better than to buy physical packs of data cards as they can become obsolete in a few months time.
For beginners... For players that struggled with 9th edition. Same difference lmao
