  • The events that occurred in Las Vegas were not only tragic, but they should serve as a reminder for those who create content as to what can happen when your desire is to be "first."
    Conspiracy theories are sometimes real, but I worry that sometimes people want them to be true more than they want to look at the data objectively.
    This episode attempts to explain and provide a thought process that has served me well in life when it comes to separating the "wheat from the chaff" of information overload.

      I agree. I don’t doubt that the email was real, and as you said, that does not mean the contents were. Assuming the contents were the result of a mental health crisis, which by all accounts it seems they were, all that was accomplished was highlighting a horrific end to someone who was mentally struggling, to an audience of millions. I love Shawn, and his podcast is amazing, and what I have said is not directed at him. My commentary is towards anyone who makes content, I believe we are obligated to deeply consider what we put out, and why.

      @@ClearedHotPodcast Lets be honest certain platforms have never cared about the veracity of those they platform, only the reach it will get. When it also comes down to profiting from conspiracy and encouraging dangerous political acts that does need calling out. The idea that someone with a high level of knowledge and expertise in this area would be so easily duped and take this at face value is also as unbelievable as the email contents. Being wrong is OK, knowing you are wrong and choosing to profit from it is not, but is the norm for the new alternative media.

    I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to look at things from multiple perspectives these days.. I take pride in the ability to see things from multiple angles to try and come up with the best or most probable outcomes. It seems there are a lot of people out there who believe the first thing they hear, and the need to pass on gossip just to be the first, like you said, is an epidemic.
    The internet NEEDS people like you; people like Shawn. Thanks Andy, there’s never a need to manipulate a horrifically sad situation.. it always does more harm than good.

    Great podcast Andy! Your thought process mirrors my own. It's frustrating to watch the conspiracies spin out of control, especially when fueled by high profile personalities who buy into them and want to be "first" with the story. It's also unfortunate that these same personalities almost never issue retractions when they are proved to have been wrong.

I have owned my own company for 24 years and I did the same, I said no cold calling, no pressuring anyone (amongst other things) because I do not like when that happens to me. I could have a very large company right now but instead I still work for myself and am only responsible for myself/family. I do fine but have had to turn down so much work over the years to keep it that way. If you run a business that turns you into someone you do not want to be is that a success? Just for some extra money? Making a living and trying to be happy is much more a measure of success in my book.

    Thanks for such a clear, responsible voice for reason. This message needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
    I have a lot of people in my life who’ve fallen for many of these crazy ideas, and I’ve noticed a couple patterns that you mentioned. One, they have pretty mundane lives, so it’s exciting for them. Two, it’s a way to make sense of a world that seems out of control. I don’t think the world is any worse than it’s ever been-just read a few history books-but people want to believe that all their problems or the problems they see in the world can be solved if they can just get rid of this person or that government agency. Even though some of these theories are complex and wild, in the minds of those who believe them, it’s easier and simpler to believe there’s an evil wizard causing all their problems rather than accepting that life is just unfair and hard.
    I’d love a podcast with a psychologist or sociologist or someone who studies this phenomenon. Not sure who that would be but I’m down for it!

These theories offer simple answers to complex and often overwhelming issues, they make the world feel less chaotic and give a sense of order when there is none.

    Psychosis is no joke and it can strike unexpectedly at any age. It seems Matt’s personal life was in turmoil, his career was finishing up as a Special Forces solider, and he was morally dissatisfied with some of the things he did in his time on an ODA. Take in to account PTSD, TBI, and probably already having an underlying mental illness, it’s a perfect recipe for disaster.

    For any individual (including those that have not encountered episodes of post-traumatic stress disorder)-when the human brain is under duress, it has to compensate often and fill in blanks. Enter periods of substitution for reality. On paper it can look justifiably normal. This might explain some of the oxymoronic decisions that are made at the administrative level concerning any combat operation. Now add PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), extreme depression, and sadly last but not least, controlled substances; prescribed or recreational. When the mind struggles to make sense of any event, it enters a state of controlled self-preservation. The human psyche in essence defaults to control or reshape any perceived threat. Often this occurs subconsciously before an event can even be processed as a threat. It's kind of like your brain just preemptively put a cushion/buffer in front of an unpleasant thought coming its way. Unfortunately, certain individuals are predisposed to find comfort in creating, adapting, or embracing conspiracy theories. It is a coping mechanism that many of us have and are completely unaware of.

    Great episode. Sad when a fellow soldier dies in this way. Often and most the time people who want conspiracies to be true then be the first to say that they knew it was true and thought of it is centered around getting attention; possibly seeking some reward for doing so. Same like those who want to be first to make content about something its to get attention via views, clicks, likes, etc. Grow the amount of attention to them. Have people speak of them or start a debate and exchange regardless if what is said and or typed is true. Truth nowadays is behind fame and monetary gain. Its sad people have come to be this way, its very true that there are even fewer people that earnestly seek truth first and real facts then speak of or type it. Thankfully you are one who seeks truth and not bs. The state of people in our country that are negative, debative, argumentative, greedy, dishonest, and so sealed in their ways and thoughts are sickening. There are alot of good and very empathetic but it seems these are less and less. Thanks for being real, factual, and empathetic, truthful in details and your thoughts. Andy, thanks for another great podcast. One note (since you said you weren’t certain): the US divorce rate for first time marriages in the US (everyone, not just military or SpecOps) is about 40-41% and has been declining since about 2000, with a small uptick around 2020-2021, probably due to covid and people being forced to be in closer proximity than they were used to. Second marriages end in divorce closer to 60% of the time, and third marriages at about 73% of the time. The 50% statistic we all hear seems to lump all marriages together. It is good to hear that the rate is declining, but I am not a sociologist and can’t begin to understand why. Hope this helps. Cheers!

    The irony is that our chief complaint about the media for quite some time now is how they refuse to wait for the facts to come out, craft a narrative early, and when information comes out in the following days that disproves the narrative, uphold the narrative at all costs. Never admit you were wrong.
    Then you have one of the largest channels of alternative media that much like them, didn’t wait for more information in the rush to report first. Part of its due being first makes you relevant. I admit I’m sitting here looking at all the things I want to listen to today with only so much time thinking “do I really want to spend the time to listen to Andy Stumpf talk about the Vegas bomber?”. Because the dead horse has been beaten at this point. The other factor is our culture wants information fast and early. We don’t have the attention span to wait. We loose interest and forget waiting. That and the news cycle shifts quickly. The CA fires and Trump’s sentencing are what’s going on now. The Vegas bombing has almost been completely forgotten.

  • @Argre
    @Argre 12 дней назад

    Andy your level-headedness is much appreciated. As to this incident, you have to admit the whole thing looked weirder than the “typical” (no minimizing meant by that) unfortunate suicide or terror attack. The symbolism with Trump/Tesla, the non-lethal VBIED, etc. The public has gotten jaded in the last 4-8 years with media telling us to lose our minds over some things and “there’s nothing to see here” on other things, when we know otherwise…
    Not saying it’s an EXCUSE to jump to conclusions (totally agree with you), but as WHY people do? It’s the lack of trust that has been earned by the media/govt fair and square, so people don’t believe they’ll ever be given reliable answers. They’ll quickly look for other sources of information. Makes perfect psychological sense in an information house-of-mirrors world, where you know the creeps who took your ticket and let you in won’t help you get out if you get disoriented.

    Excellent episode. I honestly think that people who have never delved too deeply into the darker thoughts do not understand just how deep and dark some corners of the mind can be and how powerful and painful that can be... tread lightly in those areas... and if you know someone who is struggling consider trying to help them by just being around and being present... check in on those who struggle and remind them that they matter and that you care about them... a lot of us have lost people who were on the edge.... make time for those who are struggling.... also it cost nothing to be nice or kind... also along with Occam's razor the other though process that I use daily which is Hanlon’s Razor which states that one should not attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by negligence, ignorance, or incompetence.. Hanlons Razor really explains a lot in this world...

    I really enjoy listening to you. You are very level headed, and will take a step back from a situation to look at it from all angles. And your tone of voice tries to keep the calm in a storm. I may not always agree with you and that’s okay as well. I’m firm in my beliefs that I’m not easily swayed-not saying that you are an influencer either. I don’t see you as an influencer at all honestly. Wishing you and your family the best. I do think it’s quite comical you are that friend who watches the other friend eat the disgusting MREs while you stand by and probably on the inside dying laughing.

    The disturbing trend Im observing is a lot of people are automatically going straight to conspiracy theories. Im out here in SoCal and on the first day of the fires I couldnt tell you how many people said it was terrorism, politically motivated, a homeless person and the government manipulating the climate.
    As for being a retired first responder, I put the job above my family. The job came first everyday. I lost the ability to understand the feelings of people who werent inside my inner circle. I lost a lot of relationships including my spouse.

    The family dynamic being a cause makes a lot more sense than these government conspiracy theories being spread on the internet, in particular one show hosted by a former seal. I'm an 11B. When I deployed to Iraq/Syria, I saw more than a couple of folks struggle with mental health because of bad family dynamics. I myself was dealing with a grandparent who died, and my dad was in and out of the hospital. Being in a dangerous environment like the Middle East is inherently stressful. Doing it while you have problems back home can multiply that stress tenfold. And those problems don't go away when you return home. In fact, they're likely to have an even greater impact. Point is, while it may get more clicks to go down the alex jones route, it's not helpful in any way to military members and veterans to be putting conspiracy theories out there. That's why I'm grateful to Andy for taking a careful approach to discussing these issues.

    I appreciate your take on subjects in general, but this is perfect. I think people in general want conspiracy theories to be true to justify their devotion to a particular tribe, be it Red, Blue, Anti-gov, religion, etc and generate excitement for their “I told you so” moment. Every tribe has layers, but the closer a conspiracy can be plausible, the deeper the devotion becomes and the more divide created in our society.

    In regards to the "ufos" if you look into the research and testing that eugine podketnov, ning li at nasa, and the European space agency did with superconductiong ceramic disks and studying the gravitomagnetic effects that those tests allrgedly produced, its not hard to extrapolate that out into having either plans, of some type of physics blueprint to start trying to build a new type of craft. I encourage anyone to look into it because it certainly is very interesting information. I just want to add that in so Ufos dont automatically go in the skitzo conspiracy box.
    I think its far different then the conspiracy of lizard people eating babies in underground ufo bases. Btw I can safely say that i hope to god thats not true.
    I think people just know their system is lying to them, they wonder what else is out there to learn the truth about, and sometimes that gets out of hand or bad actors take advantage.

  • @nathanbailey9153
    @nathanbailey9153 13 дней назад +2

    Andy, while everything you said is essentially true, it's still very possible your conclusion is incorrect. First, the NAVY has "Anti-gravity" patents they just pushed through a few years ago. Second, you didn't even mention the second "conspiracy" that Matt listed - the bombings of hundreds of civilians on one day and the UN investigation into that (which appears to be verifiable).
    Is it still possible that it was a mental health break - maybe. It was my first thought. But even worse than ignoring mental health breaks is falsely attributing sound action and truth to a "mental health break".
    Look at all the "conspiracy theories" that ended up being true - COVID is likely man-made, MK-Ultra was real, and we actually ARE funding the Taliban. Even "Pizza-gate" is most likely mostly true, at least in the sense that they were human-trafficking underage people and hiding under a veneer of "pizza delivery" (I didn't believe it until I read some of the Podesta emails). And where did the extra 15 Million votes for Biden in 2020 come from, and where did they go (this was another "conspiracy theory" I didn't believe until I saw that statistic).
    Occam's Razor is useful, but it's not the end-all, be-all for discerning the truth. Sometimes, often actually, the Truth is ridiculously convoluted and complicated. Wishing for things to be simple is the failure of Occam's Razor. Sometimes the Truth is just not simple.

    I learned Ockham's Raxor as an ex monk. I was thinking this as you started the podc ast. I think I unconsciously and subconsciously think this way as Friar Ockham. Basically, work from necessity , first. Look at Aquinas' saying about "Distinctions." A good ex. Of Ockham's Razor and Disdinctions can be seen in the friar played by Sean Connery in Name of the Rose where he must do an investigation for the Vatican in the Dark Ages.

    Everyone Today chooses to live in their 'internet bubble of safety'. When Real World situations happen in front of their face...
    they pull out their phone and 'record' instead of 'reacting'.

    Just a thought… is it possible that individuals who have taken hardcore psychedelics (LSD) may be closer to mental health issues and more likely to be susceptible to believing conspiracies? 🤔

    • @keatcam379
      @keatcam379 14 дней назад

      This can’t be a serious question. People are subjective and so would the outcome of them taking psychedelics. LSD and a handful of other “psychedelics” have been know to bring underlying medical issues such as schizophrenia to the surface sooner than they otherwise would have, but that condition was always there, just exposed sooner due to the drug. But no taking lsd or any mind expanding compound does not make you a conspiracy theorist.

    I've gathered opinions from all branches and ranks of the US military-enlisted and veterans alike, and the one thing they all agree on is the fact that civilian casualties (CIVCAS) are taken very seriously and avoiding them is a top priority, concluding that the email (at least that portion of it) seemed out of tune with reality. That seemed to be the thing that made them question the validity of the email. Whether that be due to Master Sgt. Livelsberger's mental health or due to the email being a possible fraud was not concluded, but it's safe to say that the information in the Shawn Ryan email pertaining to CIVCAS is not accurate.

    Honestly, I think some careers are best done in complete and utter secrecy and solitude. But, that isn't the world we live in anymore. A person can derail your career, slander your character, and lie about impetus and causation. Regardless of what happened, it's clear that nobody is going to tell the truth about the matter. I know from personal experience how terrible these old dudes can be. I know how awful the groupie, single deployment, non-operations females can be. And, I know from personal experience how treacherous the non-deploying, truly civilian apparatus stateside can be.
    Langley is not a friend. They never have been. So, I would offer nothing more than to say be careful. They'll never be honest about why things happen, nor will they be honest about what they've done to react and terminate people responsible-even if they are domestic in nature with full citizenship.
