Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time.
Played as Leonardo on the hard difficulty setting.
Turtles in Time was a huge hit when it first appeared in arcades in the spring of 1991 ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), and it made no less a splash when it showed up on the Super Nintendo in the summer of the following year. The SNES version was met with universal praise by critics and fans alike, and despite having released just a few months behind juggernauts like Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, it quickly rose to the top of the sales charts.
Though the move to the SNES brought with it some changes, the game was impressively faithful to the arcade version. The bombastic, cartoon-like presentation made the transition intact, as did all of the stages and the main gameplay elements.
There were a few cuts made to make it fit on a cramped SNES cartridge - the intro was changed, the bosses' intro quotes are no longer spoken, and some frames of animation have been cut - but these changes had little impact on the game's playability, and they were subtle enough that many people never even picked up on them at the time.
There were other changes, but they weren't concessions made for the sake of running on weaker hardware - they were improvements on the original game. The Technodrome stage was extended and capped off with a new Shredder battle, Neon Night Riders became an exciting showpiece for the SNES's Mode 7 scaling capabilities, and there were a ton of new bosses. Sewer Surfin' now ends with a fight against the Rat King, Prehistoric Turtlesaurus's Cement Man has been swapped out for Slash, Bebop and Rocksteady now wait (in pirate costumes!) at the end of Skull and Crossbones, and this time, the final battle is with Super Shredder, fresh off of his introduction in the second TMNT movie.
The controls have been improved and expanded on, too. You now have direct control over throws and the dash maneuver, and you can assign your special move to a different button to avoid accidentally triggering it at an inopportune time. These changes do make the game substantially easier than the arcade version, but the improved responsiveness makes it feel quite a bit better to play.
And finally, 2P versus-fighting and time attack modes were tossed in to round out the package.
What makes the game all the more amazing is that Turtles in Time came out just weeks before the Super Nintendo's first birthday in North America. It's a phenomenal piece of work that deserves every bit of praise that was heaped on it, it was one of the best games released on the SNES, and it's arguably the best game to ever bear the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license.
In fact, I'd go so far as to argue that the inclusion of this game alone justifies the cowabunga in the upcoming Cowabunga Collection.
    LET'S KICK SHELL!
I also played the Japanese version of the game and translated all of its text. If you'd like to check that out to see how it differs from the North American release: • Teenage Mutant Ninja T...

@NintendoComplete Personally, I've enjoyed every single Turtles play through you've done. This is the "Crown Jewel" of Turtles games for most people, but I've really enjoyed watching your videos of the more obscure games (i.e. Radical Rescue). As I've said in the past, TMNT II on NES means more to me because it came out at the height of Turtles fandom for me. Keep the videos coming! I figure we're around or exactly the same age, so I'll say that the 1990/91 grade two/three version of me salutes you and says "Turtle Power".

It was the 90s when I first saw this game at a video store.
It was one Friday night and wanted to rent a good SNES game so bought candy, chips, and two 2-liters of A&W at the supermarket.
So I went to the video store and there it was the empty box TMNT: Turtles in Time on a rack and had to rent the game.
I ran back home very happy, put the cartridge in my SNES, and played until about 5 am.
    Great times in my childhood!

The soundtrack is pumped through punchier instruments, the bosses are better and more diverse, and then there is the future stage with its mode 7 - even with a fake paralax-layer below, which makes the steets really look as if they hover far above the ground. This is pretty much the best TMNT game out there and that's saying something because the arcade version of this may have the console port edged out in terms of fluidity of animation and extra animations (such as when obtaining pizza), but this version of _Turtles in Time_ is the most memorable. And I'm saying that as a Sega girl. The fact we're getting all three versions of this game (if you want to loosely include the Genesis version in) of this incredible game in one collection is definitely worth the price tag right there.

Turtles In Time Arcade is WAY better than the SNES. It makes more sense because it's a SEQUEL and you don't want a lot of the same chacracters over again. Bebop and Rockstedy had their time in the first arcade game. Time for new sub enemies for a change🤓

Here it is, Shell-heads, the one we've all been waiting for! The crown jewel of the Konami TMNT game crown. It's considered just as good as, if not even better than the original arcade Turtles in Time. Both versions have their pros and cons. Perhaps the biggest one in the arcade version's favor is the four-player action where all four Turtles battle alongside each other onscreen simultaneously whereas on SNES you're limited to two Turtles in action at once due to the limitations of the console. However, in addition to the extra Scenes and bosses and extended end credits sequence helping to provide an arguably more complete, more polished experience, the soundtrack. Is. *Legendary.* Plus there's the sound design; the sound of a boss taking damage is godly. That alone automatically makes this the superior version.
I will confess, although I really like these games, I'm _terrible_ at beat-em-ups in general, and TiT is no exception. I never was able to beat this game as a kid and I don't play many other sidescrolling brawlers except Batman Returns (which I also loved as a tyke). Nothing against the genre, I just suck at them. So it's swell to hear that both games are still considered some of the greatest.
For a game about time travel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, ironically, is timeless. *_COWABUNGA!_*

TMNT 1 arcade is better and WAY more faithful to the 87 cartoon. In T.I.T Baxter, Slash, Leatherhead, and Shredder look different. Plus it has 3 movie chacracters (Tokka, Razar, and Super Shredder) in this game. While the first two showed up in the cartoon 2 YEARS LATER, Super Shredder was never in the cartoon. He wouldn't even look like this if he did go Super Shredder in the show🤓

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is a port of the arcade game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time in order to continue the numbering from the first three Turtles games on the NES. Nice graphics, appropriate music, and a nice arcade feel make the game of the better side-scrolling beat-'em-ups available. Beside all this, it is a great challenge. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time is a lot like TMNT II: The Arcade Game for the NES. It's a side scrolling fighting game where you have to get rid of tons of the Foot Klan, and at the end of each level there is a boss such as Bebop & Rocksteady, an alligator, robotic turtles, Krang, and more. Also like TMNT II for the NES, you can either play a game by yourself or play a two player game which is the same as playing Co-op because you and your friend will be able to go through the levels and fight at the same time, just like working as a team. Instead of the levels mainly being in sewers and on the streets like they were before, you will go to dinosaur levels, a train, of course the Technodrome, and others. In other words, you will be fighting through history, hence the title, Turtles in Time. The graphics of the game aren't bad at all, for a Super Nintendo/Arcade game. The front of the box is described as "Board Shredder's terror four through time, direct from the arcade hit, non-stop to your house, no tokens required. It's Konami's hottest Turtle game of all-time!"

Now, this is the best version, despite the soundtrack and graphics not being as good as the Arcade original. TCRF says that audio files for Slash were in the Arcade game. I thought I remember reading somewhere that Bebop and Rocksteady were also featured in the game as unused audio, too.

Once again about this game, there is no need to say what has been said about it like a million times already. One of the best SNES games ever, greatest cartoon based game ever made, and one of all time classics ever created. This SNES adaptation proved to be even more popular than its arcade counterpart, surpassing it in many areas. Better control of the throw moves, button configurations, the option to set your dash auto or manual, and turning off the back attack. The game also expanded boss roster with the inclusion of more fan favorite turtles villains: the Rat King, Slash (replacing the one-off Cement Man in the fifth stage), and the return of Bebop & Rocksteady, having to move over Tokka & Rahzar as mid-bosses in the exclusive Technodrome stage (which culminates with an also exclusive memorable boss fight with Shredder piloting a battle mech where you throw him an endless wave of Foot Soldiers at his face).
This game alone can be to some people the main reason that warrants the big excitement for the Cowabunga Collection. You'll see some comments like that in different forums.
The undisputed very best TMNT game ever created.

Turtles In Time is one of those games that unites everyone born from that generation as it seems everyone played it. What makes this version superior is those hit confirms. When you land a hit on a enemy or boss, it feels satisfying. Its one of the 90’s most beloved games.

turns out that the "throwing the enemy at the screen" thing isn't mode 7 at all - the game renders the "scaled" graphics on background 3. You might notice how they don't overlap with the UI, because that's rendered on background 3 as well. If you go frame by frame, you might also see that the scaled graphics use a few less colours than normal, and that's because background 3 only allows 3 colours + transparency per tile, compared to the regular 15 + transparency (this is also why UI elements in so many SNES games seem oddly low-colour). Graphics take up less space this way, though, which is highly valuable for rom space and internal video memory conservation.
Another cool tidbit is that the really beefy snare sample is the same sound used for all of the punch and explosion sounds (with variations on pitch and volume). And, I mean, it really is the perfect sample for all of those things, right?

How many afternoons playing this with my cousins. Also, for several years I didn't even known the original arcade game existed, contrarily to the 1989 original I never saw a cabinet of it in my area, and so I was convinced it was made just for the SNES. Either way it doesn't make it less impressive.
Long time since I last checked here! In fact, I didn't even know about the announcement of that collection. Between that and the DotEmu game there's going to be a lot.
