I love how snicket explains certain words, it's a direct nod to the books and how the author tells the story. You see, when lemony snicket explains a word, the way he explains a word can blend in with the story as an event is happening. Personally, I think the tv series is killing it adaptation wise.

Honestly I feel like you didn't understand the show, I get that it wasn't your sort of thing, like here's an example, you complained that most the adults were incompetent which is the entire point. The series follows the books more closely and the books are a satire of children's lit, so they're criticizing how adults in children's lit tend to be pretty incompetent by giving the adults in the series that same flaw but to an absurd extent. It's why all of the adults that are actually competent have to end up getting killed. Also I think you missed a lot of the humor in the series, maybe it's not your style of humor but there's the edge of dark and absurdist humor constant in the series.
I completely agree and you are right. The series is supposed to be about how three orphans go through many guardians however, Count Olaf really wants the Baudelaire fortune. The author made the parents not know Count Olaf was in the disguise thats part of all the unfortunate events that happen in the show. It is literally one of the key points that the Baudelaires live in misery.
Point about Poe: The books are meant for 12 - 14 year olds, ages where they are constantly frustrated that adults do not listen to them. He's a symbol for that frustration that his target audience feels

It most likely worked for the books but that's a written story. A movie is supposed to SHOW not TELL. I would be ok with it if he wasn't in it much but he shows WAY too often in the show which is supposed to be a visual medium. So in my opinion it really doesn't work in the show.

Lemony’s appearances, spoiling any shocking revelations, creates a uniquely consistent oppressive atmosphere, and at the same time, creates distance for the audience, which hammers in your impotence to affect their story. If it’s not your cup of tea, that’s fine, but it wasn’t bad writing. Also, Patrick Warburton changes his outfit a few times; it’s not for comedy, but because he’s supposed to be blending in. A suit is a typical working class outfit, and carries an authority that people are less likely to question, which is why he often wears one.
You mentioned that snicket never wore outfits relevant to his location after his swimming costume on briny beach, but he does multiple times E.g. he wears a sailors outfit on a boat in the wide window, he wears a hikers outfit in the miserable mill and when he wears a school uniform at the end (and often more times I’ve missed along with all the times he does it in the later seasons

Count Olaf actually is their relative though, in EVERY version. The show was justifying the misunderstanding about the meaning of the word "closest", when the Baudelaire parents' will says they should go to the "closest living relative". The will clearly meant emotionally close, but the bank took it to mean geographically close.

No, he was just a very distant relative several times removed. As were their other relatives like Uncle Monty and Aunt Josephine. In the TV show he talked his way into Mr Poe giving them to him first (in the film they didn't feel the need to justify Mr Poe's absurd decision making skills).
My biggest gripe with this review is him complaining about the cartoonish nature of the world. It's supposed to be exaggerated and over the top. It's not like the show was realistic for several episodes before adding the looney tunes logic, it made it clear that's just part of the setting.
I have to disagree about Snicketts placement within the show. I, personally, think its a good way to break up tension and remind viewers that this is a retelling of the story of the children seen through the eyes of Snicket himself, something people often forget in favor of the children because they are the main characters. His interruptions in the show and short monologs also remind viewers of the deeper and more subtle plot, which is why the entire show is even taking place to begin with. Without his little interruptions we would never know about things like Beatrice or realize that we actually know what VFD stands for from the very first episode.
So we need to be stopped from watching the tense moment for this really useless 5 second scene for him to explain to us what stand offish is supposed to mean. Yah yah alright
4:24 Snicket defines words all the time in the books. This is why making a fair compression almost requires you to read the books. Because you don't know if they're doing something because the creators wanted to, or because they did it in the book.

not everything in literature translates well to the screen. They're two different mediums. I believe as a kid that was fun to read but watching it now as an adult is irritating, mainly because it is done way too much. So you welcome the author's digressions because it would often provide you with another glimmer of insight into the big picture. or, sometimes, hilariously the opposite. On-screen, however, you're already watching the story unfold, so Snicket only ever pops up really to just stop a scene dead in it's tracks so you can watch a man of no particular relevance walk out and assault you with dad humor. speaking of, I like the actor playing him but this version of Snicket feels like somebody dragged their dad in to read lines from a script with a sense of humor that goes right over his head
Mr. Poe is much like he is in the show as the books. Whenever he drops the children off at their new home, he never has time to stay, always has to get back to the bank and he says as much
But his facial expressions and gestures are significantly more exaggerated in the show, and you don't see these in the books. In fact I think the movie version did a much better job at portraying the personality of Mr. Poe than the Netflix version.

I personally like Lemony in the show better. I feel like in the movie he feels like he his not needed, but he is, he tells the freakin story for crying out loud. I also I actually kinda likes the Lemony breaks the tension.For example, in the Hostile Hospital, when The Baudelaire’s are about to jump 20 feet down, midway Lemony pauses them in midair. Also, I like Sunny better in the show. As the show is farther developed Sunny is SUPER helpful.

Alfre Woodard holds a special space in my heart, I loved her as Betty Applewhite and I enjoyed her performance in the show, but knowing she's a very competent actress made me feel sad she didn't give it 100%, or maybe it was the acting coach screwing up. I'm not sure, but she was definetly a good Aunt Josephine. I really wished she would end like the book version, though. Meryl Streep is a tough "competetor" though and I definetly understand why people trend to prefer Meryl Streep over Alfre Woodard in this role.

Yeah, it is so weird that he is complaining about how the character Mr Poe is supposed to be. The guy in the Netflix show perfectly showed how frustrating Mr Poe is, whether I am reading the books or watching the show I got a strong urge to want to punch Mr Poe which I feel like you are supposed to feel that way about him.

The characters did the job they were supposed to do. It's "dramatic irony" being used and the audience is supposed to be upset no adult can see through the disguises. This guy seems to be letting his emotions affect his judgement of the acting.
Ikr throughout the movie the characters wear sad colors and in the TV series they wear bright colors. I don't know how he thought that, but fine it is All about perspective. Personally I looked the movie better even if it did not follow the plot of the books because acting was far superior in the movie than in the show.

The reason Lemony Snicket is constantly in the scenes is because they wanted the series to be more like the books in that regard. In the books, he is CONSTANTLY narrating and going on just like we see in the show, only more so. Telling stories, doing his little vocabulary lessons etc. Also, he is revealing important details that can only be revealed to the viewer by him. They left out his love for the kids mother, Beatrice in the film, but now, more attention can be given to that and other things of importance that he talks about in the books. There's just a lot to it and a very good reason behind him constantly being there. I hope that makes sense. But I get it. I does become slightly annoying after a while. Also, I believe he changes outfits to fit the scene a few times that you may not have noticed. In the last episode, he is wearing the Prufrock Preparatory School uniform and I believe he wears a couple of different outfits throughout the show as well.
Also, Alfrey Woodard(I think that's how you spell her name)the actress who played Aunt Josephine is actually an extremely talented award winning actress. It's just that for whatever reason, this was not the best project for her. I noticed that this show seemed to have a very specific stylized style of acting. She probably just couldn't adjust her own acting skills for this. But seriously! lol she really is a wonderful actress. She has been nominated for an Oscar, has 4 Emmys and 18 nominations, a Golden Globe and 3 Screen Actors Guild Awards. She's good...really lol

I agree with you on a lot except one thing. You mentioned Lemony's appearance ruined it, but you have to remember the books are a third person narrative. There's events in the story that not even Lemony knows, but what he does he explains in great detail.
The reason Snicket is in so many scenes is because it's him telling the story of the Baudelaires. We aren't watching it happen. We are watching him explain the story.
I think you really have to be a tv first or book first fan. If you're coming from the movie alone you aren't going to understand or appreciate many of the quirks that make the series this series.

Ive Heard a lot of people say the same thing: "Count Olaf could have killed Mr.Poe anytime!" But don't you understand that in order for Count Olaf to get his hands on the children's fortune, he first needs to have legal control over them, and Mr.Poe is the one he needs to convince that he is a worthy guardian or that he has been left in charge, killing him would do no good. If he killed him in The Reptile Room #2, after being proved to be Count Olaf, it would only make it harder for him to get the children's money.

The thing is, the ending fits the movie's tone. It doesn't matter what the source material says, a book series doesn't work as a film by itself. They took creative liberties which worked better for the type of film they were going for. It's a miracle that the movie is as faithful as it is.
Plus the ending he talked about was season ones there are like two more seasons and the story till the ending is supposed to be sad the song even says a tall full of woe and it is supposed to be a not happy story
I read the books before the movie was released. I like both versions, but the Netflix version is closer to the book because it has more time to tell it.

Here are some of my problems with this video. 1. There are nine books left in the series not ten. 2. Lemony Snicket changes his outfit more than just at the beach. Heck you show the example at the orchard where he's wearing overalls. 5:17 3. Also the Netflix has brighter and more diverse colors. At least not all the characters in the netflix series wore black clothing. 4. About the comedy, that was pretty biased about what you said about Sunny making the comedy better. There were more funny and clever moments I caught including a fourth wall break, a Nickolodeon reference, a joke involving an hour glass, a funny remark about Mr. Poe's childhood, and a reference to the 2008 real estate crash. 5. What you said about Aunt Josephine was mean. Screaming is part of her character and at least she stands up to Count Olaf instead of openly giving the Baudalaires to him.

As someone who's read the book I have to say that Meryl Streep played the character amazingly and the woman in the show did terribly, as you said giving the Baudalaires to Count Olaf was part of her character and it made more sense also it makes Count Olaf look more like a despicable bastard. Her randomly standing up for herself was well random and didn't make much sense.
4 Books are told in Season 1. I believe another 4 were told for season 2. The last season is going to hold either 5 or 4 since I need to double check for Season two.
The movie version is brighter overall, but the series focuses on placing the brighter colours on the children and the happy moments or memories as a contrast to the monochromatic and cruel world they face all the time. So you see brighter colours in the series, but they have a certain role in the storytelling (compare them to the almost monochromatic settings of Olaf's mansion, their burnt house, Aunt Josephine's house, the factory, etc,.) whereas in the movie, they don't use vibrant colours but as a whole is much brighter.
you are absolutely right, but Maisie talked about bright colours in the series, and I think that the series, whereas colourful, was less bright than the movie.
It depends on what you mean by "bright colors." The movie has a warmer color grading, so everything is a little more "comforting." in the netflix series everything is graded very blue, so it feels "cold" and sad. That actual color scheme of the movie is pretty gray and black -- there is a general lack of color. But the colors are saturated, so it feels like a "brighter" world if that makes sense. The netflix series is more "colorful" -- there is a wider range of existing colors and tones, but they are desaturated and dulled out. I think in the movie, they kept saturation high while keeping actual colors of objects and costumes dark and somber. There is also much nicer contrast between darks and lights, so everything is much more visually striking. It keeps the film looking modern and beautiful but without making it too cheery looking. I think it was a good decision, because the film looks gorgeous. The show looks just kinda boring to me. :/ And usually I like a desaturated look. I think it just falls flat for me, because I feel like desaturation signals "serious," but the netflix series is just too wacky and cartoonish in its writing, and so the look ends up clashing with the writing.

The tone of the series is darker and Olaf is infinitely more cruel: It's more than obvious that it's the other way around, the series has a much more cartoonish atmosphere whereas the movie is grim and keeps it relatively realistic throughout. 2. The movie uses comedy more than the series: While they both have an absurd and dark sense of humor, the series is far more exaggerated and light-hearted, almost to a surreal extent. 3. The creator didn't like Snicket's costume gags so there's only one near the beginning: Well, this is just straight up false. 4. Snicket's "interruptions" are a way to draw younger kids in, unnecessary at times and ruins the moment: See, the thing is, that interruption IS "the moment". I understand that it can be a personal preference, but it's almost like saying the songs in Grease were interruptions. He made the remark that he didn't read the books which used this type of obvious storytelling as a main vehicle, but just the series by itself makes it clear that that's the way the story is going to be told. It's not an additional tool, it's inherent. 5.The character break that he mentions around 9:10 : I don't know if he's joking with that and I'm completely misunderstanding, but Olaf is an egotistical actor, that is EXACTLY in character. 6. Actors being unnatural, mentioned around 11:00 : The tone isn't supposed to be natural or realistic, that scene is not a one time mishap, that is how things work in that universe. 7. The criticism against Poe: This was just straight up criticism against the actual character, not the way he's been portrayed, he just criticized the character for being an annoying idiot. Well, he is that? He's supposed to be that. I honestly don't get this one. 8. The series has a low budget: No it doesn't. They built those sets from zero, there was minimal green screening as mentioned by the actors themselves, the show had an immense budget. I felt the CGI being laughable at times was a conscious choice but not liking it is personal so I'll give him that. 9. Concluding the story can be visually told its entirety unlike Harry Potter: Well, saying that without reading the books is just not right. That could be the case, but there's no way he can conclude on that without actually reading the original. (Especially when the story has so many obvious literary references and gags.) 10. And as a minor point, I found the remarks about the "fat" wife and the constant mention of things being "retarded" distasteful. It seems childish and just simply unnecessary. There is no actual care for the storytelling, and I may be taking this WAY too seriously but I do care about this story. I found the lack of even the bare minimum effort to get simple facts right disturbing.
It is, the guy who made it in the books and the Show said it can never go back down to the ground. And that Snicket said he was investigating the case of the Children, it’s after the events of the books.
I love the series. Books and show alike and they are very very very great! I love how in the beginning of the show it looks very happy but it feels like something sinister is being covered up. (I also love sunny and I feel like Presley Smith will have a wonderful future in acting.
This video gets to me for some odd reason. I try to look at his points in his point of view but I still think the show was much better than the movie in general! The characters are much more like the books and it makes the series so much better. The series has more time to explain everything and you get more time to actually listen and it doesn’t feel as rushed. When I watched the movie I felt like barley any of the guardians had any lines because their scenes were so rushed. Both count Olaf’s were fabulous but you could tell it was Count Olaf more in the movie than the series. In the series you also feel more sorry for the children and the count Olaf in the series threatens them more but in the movie it seems like it’s a joke or something? Obviously this is my opinion but the series for me is about a 9/10 and the movie about a 6/10.
Aside from adding a few extra things, the Netflix show pretty much feels like I was dropped into the world that the books created which is why I love the Netflix version so much. Like some of the things he complains about are things pulled from the books like Lemony’s side stories, Josephine being over the top and being more concerned about grammar than the safety of the children, Count Olaf’s bad disguises somehow fooling everyone except the Baudelaire children, Sunny’s very sharp teeth, and especially Mr Poe being the most infuriating person in the entire series with how stupid he is. All the things he complained about are in the book, especially when Lemony is reciting lines straight from the book which gave the story a rather unique flair.
All the more reason you would expect a much better performance from her in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Since this video I have seen her in more stuff and she is a much better actress than I initially thought. Which is why it baffles me that she turned in this horrible and patronizing performance.
Okay, but it feels like you should've done more research on that. When you don't look up the actress and making a generalizing statement like that, your script comes off as lazy.
Something I found really threatening about Olaf in the show was how casually he'd threaten the children at times. He'd talk about thinks like slitting Klaus' throat or ripping out Violets hair in the same tones most people would discuss the weather.
The Netflix Olaf acted overtly evil, but was subconsciously and secretly unhappy about himself, his life and his choices in life- but was too proud and forgone to do anything to change it. The Movie Olaf is more friendly, but that hides how much more heartless and devious he is- especially since the movie never reach the end of the book series, like the Netflix series did, so he comes across as an irredeemable monster with no sad depths to his personality.
Yeah the Mr. Poe from the show is pretty accurate to the books, although his true colors aren't shown until a little later in the books. While he was a dope in the books for the first few I still felt that he cared about the children... until he makes it clear that he cares more about his job then them around book 6 or 7. If you really hate him that much you might like his ultimate fate.
I very much disagree with you about Lemony Snickets in the series. You don't get how humorous, Snickets word explanations are. He is one of my favorite parts of the show. Deadpan humor at it's finest.
It could also be a way to teach vocabulary in an interesting way, they are books for children 10+ so it makes more sense he put big words in and explained instead of just a simple word since 95% of the targeted audience wouldn't even see it as a recurring joke

i mostly agree with you here and on the whole its a great video but i have to disagree with you about lemony snicket; his purpose is to break the mood, interrupt scenes, detach the audience from the moment. stuff like this is often used in expressionist theatre to make the audience more critical of the things happening on-stage, rather than thinking more with emotions than logic, which i think is a great addition to the show. it happens in the books too, where something really suspenseful is happening and right on the cliffhanger you get a page of snicket's ramblings. as both a callback to the books and with a solid dramatic function i personally love it, but thats just me :)

The Netflix series is more based on the books. Lemony jumps into the scenes because that is what happens in the books...Also, I completely disagree with what u were saying about Neil Patrick Harris’s makeup when I first watched the Netflix series I had no idea that was him! The actress for Aunt Josephine is actually extremely fantastic at acting, but I guess the character isn't right for her. Just watch Luke Cage, she is a better villain in that show than here.
I think Alfrie Woodard who plays Aunt Josephine in the show is a good actor. All of the characters are over dramatic and eccentric. She may have overdone it, but she's not a bad actress.
When he started complaining about lemony snicket in the TV show I was outraged because everything he gave backlash about is why I love the character so much! I liked this video but the shitting on Alfre Woodard is a bit...much. Yes, I think she was miscast and possibly poorly directed for this role. But if you took the time to look at any of her work you'd see she is more than competent. Take for instance Luke Cage where she is a standout character.

I understand your point, but it just seemed like you got a bit past criticism and it became a bit of a mean spirited tirade. Again I agree with you, she wasn't good. I think the role wasn't a good fit for her.

You go well beyond disliking her performance in this series and state, several times (I lost count), "this actress (never by name) can't act" or versions thereof. A mistake of ignorance, at best. TLDR: Take this friendly criticism as a learning opportunity--it is often hard to be sure how one's own rhetoric falls on other ears. Here, your words come across very poorly. Judging by your voice-over alone: 1) you are strangely unfamiliar with a very gifted actress; and 2) you are too lazy or irresponsible to take a minute to look her up and familiarize yourself--even a little bit--with her work before trashing her basic skills and talent. (Here's a recent, quick example for you: her 2 minute cameo scene in Captain America: Civil War is easily the best acting in a film full of good actors. With quick heartbreak and stifled rage, she fully embodies the reasons for Stark's political choice. It is instantly clear why Woodward was brought in for this pivotal scene.) Notice I didn't broadly insult your skilll as a critic, in general. Since I'm unfamiliar with anything else you've done, I stuck to pointing out the fundamental mistake you make here. If I cared enough to question your very legitimacy, I'd research your oeuvre before making rash statements. Alfre Woodward has much more fully earned the same respect. Hate her performance here all you want. But don't say she can't act. An impressive body of prior work begs to differ.
When talking about aunt josephine you didn't mention the most outstanding difference between the movie and the Netflix show, in the movie she would let the kids die to save her self whereas in the Netflix version before she dies she stands up against captain sham (Count Olaf) and overall concurs her fear making it a much more meaning full moment and making us as the viewer connect with her more.
This is related to the NETFLIX SERIES not the movie. If you hate Arthur Poe from the series, just remember his actor did a tremendous job. Poe's foolish behaviour was bloody hilarious at times. But you've got to admit, though the movie Aunt Josephine was better, she just gave up the kids to Olaf unlike the Netflix one, who at least stood up to Olaf for a while.

The show does not have a "darker aesthetic." It does use juxtaposition to convey how horrible the orphans feel by contrasting their immediate environment with the bright and happy tones that go on around them. The film is the one with the darker tone.
Speaking of Harry Potter, the actor for Mr. Poe in the movie is Timothy Spall, the same actor who played Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter films. I just wanted to say that.
Every version of Mr. Poe is written to be incompetent. He’s dismissive of them as children, and as individuals. And he ultimately never learns his lesson or actually helps the children.
I do really like the TV show better. I just like how it has more detail to the books and I understood it a lot better. So I totally agree with you that the TV show is better.

I love how snicket explains certain words, it's a direct nod to the books and how the author tells the story. You see, when lemony snicket explains a word, the way he explains a word can blend in with the story as an event is happening. Personally, I think the tv series is killing it adaptation wise.

Honestly I feel like you didn't understand the show, I get that it wasn't your sort of thing, like here's an example, you complained that most the adults were incompetent which is the entire point. The series follows the books more closely and the books are a satire of children's lit, so they're criticizing how adults in children's lit tend to be pretty incompetent by giving the adults in the series that same flaw but to an absurd extent. It's why all of the adults that are actually competent have to end up getting killed. Also I think you missed a lot of the humor in the series, maybe it's not your style of humor but there's the edge of dark and absurdist humor constant in the series.
I completely agree and you are right. The series is supposed to be about how three orphans go through many guardians however, Count Olaf really wants the Baudelaire fortune. The author made the parents not know Count Olaf was in the disguise thats part of all the unfortunate events that happen in the show. It is literally one of the key points that the Baudelaires live in misery.

Lemony’s appearances, spoiling any shocking revelations, creates a uniquely consistent oppressive atmosphere, and at the same time, creates distance for the audience, which hammers in your impotence to affect their story. If it’s not your cup of tea, that’s fine, but it wasn’t bad writing.
Also, Patrick Warburton changes his outfit a few times; it’s not for comedy, but because he’s supposed to be blending in. A suit is a typical working class outfit, and carries an authority that people are less likely to question, which is why he often wears one.
You mentioned that snicket never wore outfits relevant to his location after his swimming costume on briny beach, but he does multiple times
E.g. he wears a sailors outfit on a boat in the wide window, he wears a hikers outfit in the miserable mill and when he wears a school uniform at the end (and often more times I’ve missed along with all the times he does it in the later seasons

Count Olaf actually is their relative though, in EVERY version. The show was justifying the misunderstanding about the meaning of the word "closest", when the Baudelaire parents' will says they should go to the "closest living relative". The will clearly meant emotionally close, but the bank took it to mean geographically close.

No, he was just a very distant relative several times removed. As were their other relatives like Uncle Monty and Aunt Josephine. In the TV show he talked his way into Mr Poe giving them to him first (in the film they didn't feel the need to justify Mr Poe's absurd decision making skills).

My biggest gripe with this review is him complaining about the cartoonish nature of the world. It's supposed to be exaggerated and over the top. It's not like the show was realistic for several episodes before adding the looney tunes logic, it made it clear that's just part of the setting.

I have to disagree about Snicketts placement within the show. I, personally, think its a good way to break up tension and remind viewers that this is a retelling of the story of the children seen through the eyes of Snicket himself, something people often forget in favor of the children because they are the main characters. His interruptions in the show and short monologs also remind viewers of the deeper and more subtle plot, which is why the entire show is even taking place to begin with. Without his little interruptions we would never know about things like Beatrice or realize that we actually know what VFD stands for from the very first episode.

4:24 Snicket defines words all the time in the books. This is why making a fair compression almost requires you to read the books. Because you don't know if they're doing something because the creators wanted to, or because they did it in the book.

not everything in literature translates well to the screen. They're two different mediums. I believe as a kid that was fun to read but watching it now as an adult is irritating, mainly because it is done way too much. The bit is overplayed and loses its authentic edge because we already saw it too much

On-screen, however, you're already watching the story unfold, so Snicket only ever pops up really to just stop a scene dead in it's tracks so you can watch a man of no particular relevance walk out and assault you with dad humor. speaking of, I like the actor playing him but this version of Snicket feels like somebody dragged their dad in to read lines from a script with a sense of humor that goes right over his head
Mr. Poe is much like he is in the show as the books. Whenever he drops the children off at their new home, he never has time to stay, always has to get back to the bank and he says as much
But his facial expressions and gestures are significantly more exaggerated in the show, and you don't see these in the books. In fact I think the movie version did a much better job at portraying the personality of Mr. Poe than the Netflix version.

I personally like Lemony in the show better. I feel like in the movie he feels like he his not needed, but he is, he tells the freakin story for crying out loud. I also I actually kinda likes the Lemony breaks the tension.For example, in the Hostile Hospital, when The Baudelaire’s are about to jump 20 feet down, midway Lemony pauses them in midair. Alfre Woodard holds a special space in my heart, I loved her as Betty Applewhite and I enjoyed her performance in the show, but knowing she's a very competent actress made me feel sad she didn't give it 100%, or maybe it was the acting coach screwing up. I'm not sure, but she was definetly a good Aunt Josephine. I really wished she would end like the book version, though.

Saying Count Olaf's portrayal in the movie is bad because it was played by Jim Carry is deserved but in a review comparison that should not take away from the movie. Forgetting his Lines? If you hate breaking the 4th wall the show does it way too much to not be a distraction from the plot, while Olaf asking to take it from the top was in character and flowed well to display who Olaf was.I admire the not taking the short length of the movie as a handycap, but by ignoring the cheap production of the show it is as if he has given a handicap to the show. Un fair.... Upon just seeing the examples even in this video I would have thought the movie better, and, having watched both productions, know that the movie is exceptionally better then the show.

Personally I looked the movie better even if it did not follow the plot of the books because acting was far superior in the movie than in the show.

The reason Lemony Snicket is constantly in the scenes is because they wanted the series to be more like the books in that regard. In the books, he is CONSTANTLY narrating and going on just like we see in the show, only more so. Telling stories, doing his little vocabulary lessons etc. Also, he is revealing important details that can only be revealed to the viewer by him. They left out his love for the kids mother, Beatrice in the film, but now, more attention can be given to that and other things of importance that he talks about in the books. There's just a lot to it and a very good reason behind him constantly being there. I hope that makes sense. But I get it. I does become slightly annoying after a while. Also, I believe he changes outfits to fit the scene a few times that you may not have noticed. In the last episode, he is wearing the Prufrock Preparatory School uniform and I believe he wears a couple of different outfits throughout the show as well.
Also, Alfrey Woodard(I think that's how you spell her name)the actress who played Aunt Josephine is actually an extremely talented award winning actress. It's just that for whatever reason, this was not the best project for her. I noticed that this show seemed to have a very specific stylized style of acting. She probably just couldn't adjust her own acting skills for this. But seriously! lol she really is a wonderful actress. She has been nominated for an Oscar, has 4 Emmys and 18 nominations, a Golden Globe and 3 Screen Actors Guild Awards. She's good...really lol

I agree with you on a lot except one thing. You mentioned Lemony's appearance ruined it, but you have to remember the books are a third person narrative. There's events in the story that not even Lemony knows, but what he does he explains in great detail.

But don't you understand that in order for Count Olaf to get his hands on the children's fortune, he first needs to have legal control over them, and Mr.Poe is the one he needs to convince that he is a worthy guardian or that he has been left in charge, killing him would do no good. If he killed him in The Reptile Room #2, after being proved to be Count Olaf, it would only make it harder for him to get the children's money.

Really?! The ending of the movie is better because it is a lighter end?! But the Netflix series is great and the ending was amazing I mean, come on man the title is a series of UNFORTUNATE events not happy events it shouldn't have a lighter ending and in the Netflix series the makeup is really good I don't think you can do better plus seeing lemony snicket makes me very happy because I NEEDED to see what he actually looked liked I know this is kind of a rant and I still loved the video but I love the Netflix series wayyyy better because Neil Patrick Harris is perfect for the roll and they probably got the best actors for the series possible although I hated aunt Josephine in the series they should've changed it

The thing is, the ending fits the movie's tone. It doesn't matter what the source material says, a book series doesn't work as a film by itself. They took creative liberties which worked better for the type of film they were going for. It's a miracle that the movie is as faithful as it is.
Plus the ending he talked about was season ones there are like two more seasons and the story till the ending is supposed to be sad the song even says a tall full of woe and it is supposed to be a not happy story
I read the books before the movie was released. I like both versions, but the Netflix version is closer to the book because it has more time to tell it.

That was a very fun scene.
Here are some of my problems with this video.
1. There are nine books left in the series not ten.
2. Lemony Snicket changes his outfit more than just at the beach. Heck you show the example at the orchard where he's wearing overalls. 5:17
3. Also the Netflix has brighter and more diverse colors. At least not all the characters in the netflix series wore black clothing.
4. About the comedy, that was pretty biased about what you said about Sunny making the comedy better. There were more funny and clever moments I caught including a fourth wall break, a Nickolodeon reference, a joke involving an hour glass, a funny remark about Mr. Poe's childhood, and a reference to the 2008 real estate crash.
5. What you said about Aunt Josephine was mean. Screaming is part of her character and at least she stands up to Count Olaf instead of openly giving the Baudalaires to him.

As someone who's read the book I have to say that Meryl Streep played the character amazingly and the woman in the show did terribly, as you said giving the Baudalaires to Count Olaf was part of her character and it made more sense also it makes Count Olaf look more like a despicable bastard. Her randomly standing up for herself was well random and didn't make much sense.
4 Books are told in Season 1. I believe another 4 were told for season 2. The last season is going to hold either 5 or 4 since I need to double check for Season two.

The series has a lot more bright colours than the movie though

The movie version is brighter overall, but the series focuses on placing the brighter colours on the children and the happy moments or memories as a contrast to the monochromatic and cruel world they face all the time. So you see brighter colours in the series, but they have a certain role in the storytelling (compare them to the almost monochromatic settings of Olaf's mansion, their burnt house, Aunt Josephine's house, the factory, etc,.) whereas in the movie, they don't use vibrant colours but as a whole is much brighter.

It depends on what you mean by "bright colors." The movie has a warmer color grading, so everything is a little more "comforting." in the netflix series everything is graded very blue, so it feels "cold" and sad. That actual color scheme of the movie is pretty gray and black -- there is a general lack of color. But the colors are saturated, so it feels like a "brighter" world if that makes sense. The netflix series is more "colorful" -- there is a wider range of existing colors and tones, but they are desaturated and dulled out. I think in the movie, they kept saturation high while keeping actual colors of objects and costumes dark and somber. There is also much nicer contrast between darks and lights, so everything is much more visually striking. It keeps the film looking modern and beautiful but without making it too cheery looking. I think it was a good decision, because the film looks gorgeous. The show looks just kinda boring to me. :/ And usually I like a desaturated look. I think it just falls flat for me, because I feel like desaturation signals "serious," but the netflix series is just too wacky and cartoonish in its writing, and so the look ends up clashing with the writing.
I waited for the video to redeem itself in ANY way possible but I'm honestly in awe at how backwards a review can be. I mean this is just a disaster. Beyond being completely misinformed and unaware, it's so clear that you don't give a shit about this. I don't even believe you watched these in their entirety.

1. The tone of the series is darker and Olaf is infinitely more cruel: It's more than obvious that it's the other way around, the series has a much more cartoonish atmosphere whereas the movie is grim and keeps it relatively realistic throughout.
2. The movie uses comedy more than the series: While they both have an absurd and dark sense of humor, the series is far more exaggerated and light-hearted, almost to a surreal extent.
3. The creator didn't like Snicket's costume gags so there's only one near the beginning: Well, this is just straight up false.
4. Snicket's "interruptions" are a way to draw younger kids in, unnecessary at times and ruins the moment: See, the thing is, that interruption IS "the moment". I understand that it can be a personal preference, but it's almost like saying the songs in Grease were interruptions. He made the remark that he didn't read the books which used this type of obvious storytelling as a main vehicle, but just the series by itself makes it clear that that's the way the story is going to be told. It's not an additional tool, it's inherent.
5.The character break that he mentions around 9:10 : I don't know if he's joking with that and I'm completely misunderstanding, but Olaf is an egotistical actor, that is EXACTLY in character.
6. Actors being unnatural, mentioned around 11:00 : The tone isn't supposed to be natural or realistic, that scene is not a one time mishap, that is how things work in that universe.
7. The criticism against Poe: This was just straight up criticism against the actual character, not the way he's been portrayed, he just criticized the character for being an annoying idiot. Well, he is that? He's supposed to be that. I honestly don't get this one.
8. The series has a low budget: No it doesn't. They built those sets from zero, there was minimal green screening as mentioned by the actors themselves, the show had an immense budget. I felt the CGI being laughable at times was a conscious choice but not liking it is personal so I'll give him that.
9. Concluding the story can be visually told its entirety unlike Harry Potter: Well, saying that without reading the books is just not right. That could be the case, but there's no way he can conclude on that without actually reading the original. (Especially when the story has so many obvious literary references and gags.)
10. And as a minor point, I found the remarks about the "fat" wife and the constant mention of things being "retarded" distasteful. It seems childish and just simply unnecessary.
There is no actual care for the storytelling, and I may be taking this WAY too seriously but I do care about this story. I found the lack of even the bare minimum effort to get simple facts right disturbing.

I love the series. Books and show alike and they are very very very great! I love how in the beginning of the show it looks very happy but it feels like something sinister is being covered up. (I also love sunny and I feel like Presley Smith will have a wonderful future in acting.

This video gets to me for some odd reason. I try to look at his points in his point of view but I still think the show was much better than the movie in general! The characters are much more like the books and it makes the series so much better. The series has more time to explain everything and you get more time to actually listen and it doesn’t feel as rushed. When I watched the movie I felt like barley any of the guardians had any lines because their scenes were so rushed. Both count Olaf’s were fabulous but you could tell it was Count Olaf more in the movie than the series. In the series you also feel more sorry for the children and the count Olaf in the series threatens them more but in the movie it seems like it’s a joke or something? Obviously this is my opinion but the series for me is about a 9/10 and the movie about a 6/10.

Aside from adding a few extra things, the Netflix show pretty much feels like I was dropped into the world that the books created which is why I love the Netflix version so much. Like some of the things he complains about are things pulled from the books like Lemony’s side stories, Josephine being over the top and being more concerned about grammar than the safety of the children, Count Olaf’s bad disguises somehow fooling everyone except the Baudelaire children, Sunny’s very sharp teeth, and especially Mr Poe being the most infuriating person in the entire series with how stupid he is. All the things he complained about are in the book, especially when Lemony is reciting lines straight from the book which gave the story a rather unique flair.

Something I found really threatening about Olaf in the show was how casually he'd threaten the children at times. He'd talk about thinks like slitting Klaus' throat or ripping out Violets hair in the same tones most people would discuss the weather.

The Netflix Olaf acted overtly evil, but was subconsciously and secretly unhappy about himself, his life and his choices in life- but was too proud and forgone to do anything to change it. The Movie Olaf is more friendly, but that hides how much more heartless and devious he is- especially since the movie never reach the end of the book series, like the Netflix series did, so he comes across as an irredeemable monster with no sad depths to his personality.

Yeah the Mr. Poe from the show is pretty accurate to the books, although his true colors aren't shown until a little later in the books. While he was a dope in the books for the first few I still felt that he cared about the children... until he makes it clear that he cares more about his job then them around book 6 or 7. If you really hate him that much you might like his ultimate fate.
I very much disagree with you about Lemony Snickets in the series. You don't get how humorous, Snickets word explanations are. He is one of my favorite parts of the show. Deadpan humor at it's finest.

i mostly agree with you here and on the whole its a great video but i have to disagree with you about lemony snicket; his purpose is to break the mood, interrupt scenes, detach the audience from the moment. stuff like this is often used in expressionist theatre to make the audience more critical of the things happening on-stage, rather than thinking more with emotions than logic, which i think is a great addition to the show. it happens in the books too, where something really suspenseful is happening and right on the cliffhanger you get a page of snicket's ramblings. as both a callback to the books and with a solid dramatic function i personally love it, but thats just me :)

The Netflix series is more based on the books. Lemony jumps into the scenes because that is what happens in the books...Also, I completely disagree with what u were saying about Neil Patrick Harris’s makeup when I first watched the Netflix series I had no idea that was him! The actress for Aunt Josephine is actually extremely fantastic at acting, but I guess the character isn't right for her. Just watch Luke Cage, she is a better villain in that show than here.

I think Alfrie Woodard who plays Aunt Josephine in the show is a good actor. All of the characters are over dramatic and eccentric. She may have overdone it, but she's not a bad actress.

When he started complaining about lemony snicket in the TV show I was outraged because everything he gave backlash about is why I love the character so much! Whenever me and my sister watch the show all over again because we love it, it's just constant lemony snicket fan girling because his actor in the show really does a great job.

I liked this video but the shitting on Alfre Woodard is a bit...much. Yes, I think she was miscast and possibly poorly directed for this role. But if you took the time to look at any of her work you'd see she is more than competent. Take for instance Luke Cage where she is a standout character.

I understand your point, but it just seemed like you got a bit past criticism and it became a bit of a mean spirited tirade. Again I agree with you, she wasn't good. I think the role wasn't a good fit for her.
You are, quite simply, wrong--about your own review, strangely enough. You go well beyond disliking her performance in this series and state, several times (I lost count), "this actress (never by name) can't act" or versions thereof. A mistake of ignorance, at best.

Take this friendly criticism as a learning opportunity--it is often hard to be sure how one's own rhetoric falls on other ears.
Here, your words come across very poorly. Judging by your voice-over alone: 1) you are strangely unfamiliar with a very gifted actress; and 2) you are too lazy or irresponsible to take a minute to look her up and familiarize yourself--even a little bit--with her work before trashing her basic skills and talent. (Here's a recent, quick example for you: her 2 minute cameo scene in Captain America: Civil War is easily the best acting in a film full of good actors. With quick heartbreak and stifled rage, she fully embodies the reasons for Stark's political choice. It is instantly clear why Woodward was brought in for this pivotal scene.)
Notice I didn't broadly insult your skilll as a critic, in general. Since I'm unfamiliar with anything else you've done, I stuck to pointing out the fundamental mistake you make here. Hate her performance here all you want. But don't say she can't act. An impressive body of prior work begs to differ.
When talking about aunt josephine you didn't mention the most outstanding difference between the movie and the Netflix show, in the movie she would let the kids die to save her self whereas in the Netflix version before she dies she stands up against captain sham (Count Olaf) and overall concurs her fear making it a much more meaning full moment and making us as the viewer connect with her more.
This is related to the NETFLIX SERIES not the movie.
If you hate Arthur Poe from the series, just remember his actor did a tremendous job. Poe's foolish behaviour was bloody hilarious at times.
But you've got to admit, though the movie Aunt Josephine was better, she just gave up the kids to Olaf unlike the Netflix one, who at least stood up to Olaf for a while.

The show does not have a "darker aesthetic." It does use juxtaposition to convey how horrible the orphans feel by contrasting their immediate environment with the bright and happy tones that go on around them. The film is the one with the darker tone.

Every version of Mr. Poe is written to be incompetent. He’s dismissive of them as children, and as individuals. And he ultimately never learns his lesson or actually helps the children.
I do really like the TV show better. I just like how it has more detail to the books and I understood it a lot better. So I totally agree with you that the TV show is better.

I think Snicket being there more and stopping the scenes made the scenes much more intense.
I love how we have a longer story and a better ending for the show and I prefer the show now with the new 2 seasons.
