Today we'll be forging a knife using a piece of 5/8" rebar. Rebar knives are a lot of fun to make and they have been great for practicing my forging skills. I've gotten a lot better at forming hot steel since I've been making these.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Hi Nick! Before my step-dad passed last year to cancer, he watched and loved your videos. You inspired him. You gave him life. He decided to get outside and make Bows through his final years. I am convinced he would have passed much earlier had it not been for this hobby. Thanks for all you do!
I think I am a new fan of this channel. this guy seems like the nicest guy on youtube. genuinely a cool, chill person
yeah
Agree
agreed
As always, clear concise presentation which makes for both informative and pleasurable viewing. Thanks Nick.
very nice work as usual!
I love your channel
GREENIE!
Green hi
This is the first video of yours I've seen.
Great job on the knife and the video. The video was straight to business without a bunch of braggin' fluff, which made the video easy to understand and follow.
Great job and nice work!
Seriously, Nick, you should do a book for backyard smithing like you did for bows and atlatls. Your current books are staples for getting bows made for friends and neighbors, a forging book would be icing on the cake.
I feel like a throwing axe would be a fun build. I know you've done a hatchet before, but it'd be cool to see something like that balances enough to throw
Matthew Ballard only thing is those are difficult to weigh right. They need to be very balanced to fly right.
Such a concise and excellent narration. And what a great learning project.
I'd really love to see you make a tactical fighting knife. Something you'd see a marine or army soldier use.
your actually amazing i swear i have watched hours of your videos i cant wait to get down on my property and make a forge and make some knifes your the king man thanks heaps you have inspired me so much
you got skills bro great work
mad ones
Amazing video! Keep that smile on your face man!
nice! I see your really getting into the arts. I've been watching you since the snaky curve bow which I have tried and learned a lot. Did you know plumbers have a special heating pad for pvc. No fumes, scorching and so much quicker.
About this project
I just wanted to say that I seen a few things you could do to really make this knife stronger. First aligning the metal grains, this is done by heating the stock knife to 1500 degrees - then dunk into 350 degree oil (a crock pot) do this three times. Second heat blade to 1500 again and let air cool three times. After that step put into a toaster over at 350 degrees for 2 hours air cool then sharpen blade edge to a 19 degree bevel. wash with a mild acid to make grain pop out
and since you asked about new ideas. I challenge you to take some beach sand and make some clear glass art
and then how about some fishing lures.✌
Dude... you're a boss! this video made my day. cheers 👍
Great work!
Everything about these is great. They have truly kept me from losing my mind the last two winters in the cabin. Love his attitude, he could teach Canadians on how to be nicer and more polite. Or do a TED talk.
+Steven Hildebrandt Thank you Nick.
Really straight forward video! A+
A great project, thanks for the video showing the step by step with such clarity.
Hey man! when will you be uploading on a regular basis again? I'm excited to see what you create!!!
I have a lump hammer, forge and a peice of old railroad. No money for grinders or sanders so videos like this are amazingly helpful!! Thankyou man so much!
I use jet fuel to heat my steak beams up. Gets nice and hot but doesn't melt them!
So close...
Yet so far...
your a funny man i like you
Bush did 911
Josh Acosta a 911 joke? really?
Great job! Another awesome build. You should make a Bowie knife with maple wood handles next!
Did you ever make a socketed spearhead?
+Fistwagon Yup I was thinking spearhead too. That or sheep shears.
+Fistwagon He made broadheads for arrows, which are basically mini spears...

ok ive been watching your videos for sometime and man i tell you this vid was awsome i like the creativity lol keep it up man
Why not a pizza slicer or if you wanted to really push the envelope a filleting knife would be a gutsy challenge, as usual an enjoyable watch.
Great video! Thanks for sharing, by the way great idea for the forge!
your voice mate. its beautiful.
Awesome video man, you have inspired me and I'm sure along with much others
please make more how to make a forge tutorial! please! o
You've come a long way since I first caught one of your videos. Nice work. Subscribed!
thisis how a real black smith does it without grinding and power tools
Holy cow this is amazing
duudeee its been so long. Wheres the next video, everything all good?
Blacksmiths is a work of art!
One comment, and I am sure any blacksmith will say the same. Working steel that is not glowing is going to add weakness to the blade.
Reminds me of 7th grade metal shop. I might have to do that this Summer. It's only been 43 years, but I'll give it a go.
Where've you been, Nick? Everything ok?
You seem to be a born metal worker! Old addage but true.
"He who would, a good edge win; must forge thick and grind thin".
Always leave enuff steel to remove the "skin" where some of the
essential attributes of the steel have been burned away.
Don't leave your stamps in prolonged contact with heated metal.
Other than that Splendid Job of it!! You got the gift, for forging!
U should do a giveaway
fantastic channel and amazing work! I'm nobody but I hope it still means something to you all the same that I appreciate your work! I just think you've made beautiful things and I love to watch your work!
Nick no videos uploaded in a while now :( why?
i like how calm, composed and gentle he is :)
He has a great temperament for how to videos.
wtf that saw cut it like butter
Editing mate
I just did my very first blacksmith project and made a rebar knife, it absolutely sucks compared to yours! I am excited to try it again with the tips you gave. Thanks!
boxing glove arrow? please? no?...okay fair enough...
I know this is out of context.
but I find your pfp cute to be honest.
+Jawad Ibrahim I AM NOT CUTE! I AM THE NIGHT! FEAR ME! 🐺
the wolf how could I fear you if I like the night better than the morning? o3o
+Jawad Ibrahim becuase I have a flamethrower🔥
Now that seems about right o.o
This little knife was my first project, there's hammer marks that will be on there longer than I'll be here, not sharp enough to cut paper with, and it's a mess, but it's mine. Thank you for this video and for sharing a little piece of your knowledge.
a tanto with no power tools and some good but cheap steel
I just made your PVC horsebow and I love it! Thanks for making videos so people like myself can enjoy DIY things such as this.
You should make us a Balisong (:
Once again, you knock it out of the park. Awesome job.
this is buildind steel? here where i am, this king of steel is shitty, too low carbon for a knife.
Yeah but it is cheap and great for practicing.
he sells them!!!
It’d work fine for skinning.
Incredible knife and i think you might be the bob ross of metal working. I love your demeanor man, its fun to watch and im going to go make some!!
damascus steel without powertools!!!
Really the only easy way to do it would be cable damascus which would be interesting to see him try.
Why would you need power tools for Damascus.
Why would you need power tools for Damascus?
+Walrus Warlock it is harder to get a good weld without a press or power hammer but it is not impossible too.
Ben Neely I've done it I'd say welding is easier by hand becuase you can control how hard you hit more.
really nice.
I like the simplistic approach, as in no power tools.
Muito bom! Mostra que não é preciso ter equipamentos caros para poder produzir uma faca de boa qualidade. O que importa é a criatividade e a vontade de fazer... Saudações dos cuteleiros do Brasil!!!
I really like your videos bud. You explain what you're doing every step of the way. I wish people would do that more.
Rebar is fun to forge but I've never been able to get any type of hardness out of it, great video!
Been a fan since the 1st video I seen .
I do bladesmithing my self but you got it down
Great work
Awesome man! Very calming videos... perfect with a cup of joe and a pop tart
I'm 46 and you are inspiring me kid awesome job
wow, imagine if " tools" were used, great job Nick!
always a great watch !!
Badass man, now I know what I'm doing tomorrow
hay my man that's a nice blade I am building my forge. going coal forge made from a 18 inch truck rotor and a 1956 craftsmen radial arm saw shelf. thanks for this video.
you make every thing look easy
New sub here.
Let me start by saying i you do these just right. Not any information you dont need. Just whats needed to get the job the job done. PLease keep up the amazing work.
Your forging and bladesmithing forays are very welcome Nick. But isn't it time to do a new bow build? Just one or two, then a return to the new and exciting stuff would be dandy with me.
Really appreciated this video. The vid appeals to my sense of simplicity..
I like when you explain everything you do
This man is a legend.
Nice job. Wish i could do something as skilled as that!
Love this channel. Don't think I'll ever be able to make such nice knives ever, but it's great to watch you forge scrap pieces of metal into functional works of art. Kudos man.
It would be cool if you could update the description with how long it took.
You're vids are awesome, informative and to the point, I don't have to watch for 40 minutes to get the idea, great job and thanks!
Excellent work pal - gonna give this a try tomorrow
Using rebar was good and original idea. Nice work! For your next project, here are a few suggestions :
-Roman Gladius
-Sai
-Scimitar
-Short Saber(s)
The rebar could make a good base for a spine or body of a blade, wedge in a piece of tool steel or flatten a high speed steel drill bit to use as your work edge. Could be an strong and cheap build, also forge welding is fun.
That's awesome man. I'm just getting into blacksmithing as a hobby. I enjoy you videos keep it up.
Great video man.Still try to get an anvil so I can start forging knives
Man, this looks sick. Job well done!
I love your VIDEOS keep up the great work man!!
Wow man, that things beautiful. Good job!
I'm not sure if you're able to, but i'd love to see some Damascus steel builds, either cable method or laminated method. Personally i absolutely love the way the damascus always turns out and it can be some very high quality steel at the end.
Hey Nick, that's awesome. You Rock!
Great video, very purist. I love your forging videos but I miss your bow videos. I don't know what you can do new with a bow but it would be great to see you shooting again. Maybe some trick shots or something. 😉
a pedal wheel grinder isn't a power tool, and grinding is still a part of blacksmithing.
Please don't misunderstand though. I'm not criticizing your work in any way, shape, or form. You're an amazing craftsman and I would love to be a student under you if I could. I'm simply stating that when I hear the term blacksmithing, I think back during more medieval days where blacksmithing had more purpose and value behind it.
Could you imagine today's technology if the devices we used that have metal in them were crafted by blacksmiths rather than machines? I can't deny it would be cooler, but people really seem to underappreciate the craftsmanship that goes into things like this. It truly is an artform AND a very valuable skillset. Things like this should be taught to kids in high school.
I like the size and shape of it Nick! Good idea selling your knives.
Freaking Awesome dood, keep up the good work!
Cool knife Nick. Looks like a perfect skinning knife. Lets see you forge some arrow heads. That would be cool.
Got some really good hammer skills there. Great looking forging.
I love your blacksmith works, keep it up!
Yessss!!!!!! A new video!!!!!!!
:EDIT: can you please make a shuriken of some kind?
Hey nick! I wanted to let you know that I love your channel. Personally I'm not very much into blacksmith or forging but you make your videos great! I love your attitude and you seem really nice😀 also I've been loving the knife videos! Keep up the good work man!
That was freaking amazing like really inspired me
Your videos are clear & to the point.
Very informative & not too long. Because of you, I'm going to try this thing. :-) Thanks Nick.
very cool little skinning knife .I have to try this build myself
Amazing, great job!
Congratulations! You are almost at 200 000 subscribers!!!
Cool video as always :)
You should try to make a simple knife, focusing on a micarta handle.
Would love to see that!
This is awesome. No way I could do anything like this but I hope you put some more up on your etsy page. I would LOVE to buy one.
Awesome vid. Thanks for showing the step by step.
