    I experienced several quakes in Japan. Lived on the 7th floor of a 9-story apartment building on an USAF base. Japanese always building with earthquakes written into the code. Scared the bejesus out of me every time. No picture or video can come close to the feeling of utter helplessness and dread when the constants of the physical world around you are undefined.

      They scare the bejesus out of me too and most of the ones I've been in were in California. I was in a small one in South America and thrust earthquakes shake in a more scary way than strike slip ones do, at least in my opinion, because the one small earthquake I felt in Peru was much scarier than the 7s I felt in California with the possible exception of the Landers earthquake (which no one seems to ever talk about anymore) but I was pretty young when that one happened.

      “undefined,” an excellent word to define your feeling!
      I have a fine friend who was also stationed in the USAF in the early1980’s, and wrote about her experiences when, well...as you aptly stated…her proxemics were “undefined.”
      I had another dear friend who sold his business in Alaska the day before the earthquake hit on his own birthday. He said that he felt it was a “sign” that he should leave the state…though he didn’t believe in such personal communications…
      I recall the LIFE magazine cover article in the Alaska earthquake while a young child - and as my future friend was nearly two and a half decades older - and always “recalled” the cover photo featuring a tattoo shop. (The Great Alaskan Earthquake occurred twenty years before he and I met.) Though I have yet to find a tattoo shop in any LIFE magazine photo from that edition, much less the cover itself, guess what business D. Louis Nolan was in while in Anchorage?? He had a tattoo shop.
      Nolan began tattooing in 1955, worked out of or owned quite a few shops, and tattooed until Fall of 2018; never actually retiring, but being retired by death very early in 2019. Speaking of the LIFE magazine article, Nolan had long stated that his former shop had wound up “in some magazine,” as he told of the earthquake. He said that the ground shaking was the worst feeling! Business cards from Nolan’s various shops exist in private collections around the world. When I hold a card from Anchorage I try to imagine . . .
      It all sounds as terrifying as it looks!!

    my mom was born and raised in cdmx. she was actually walking to class when the massive earthquake hit in 1985. she said it felt like she kept tripping and couldn't get her balance as she was walking, but it was actually the streets violently shaking. buildings around her were swaying, too, and she's lucky none of them collapsed as she was walking by. there was no power and the phones weren't working, so it took her a full day to be able to get in touch with her family. luckily, their building survived and they were all fine (the part of the city they lived in was one of the lesser-affected areas, though it still took a ton of damage) but they stayed at her great-aunt's single-storey house for about a month after bc they didn't know if the building was at risk of collapse. the wildest thing is that earthquakes are a very common thing in mexico city - i've felt several while staying at my grandparents' and my family there is well used to them. 1985, though, was something no one had ever seen and the city still hasn't fully recovered. i don't think it ever will. so many parts of the city were completely razed by the quake and sadly, a lot of the people there were simply crushed to death by the falling rubble. it's insane that my own mom directly experienced one of the most catastrophic earthquakes in recorded history.

    There are places in California that you can take a guided car tour of the San Andreas Fault. At one place you can see how the fault cuts through the hills and mountains for miles. They explain how there is no way any part of the state can or will fall into the ocean, like idiots like to say will happen. A large majority of the damage to San Francisco happened because they added sand to the shores in the bay. When earthquakes happened, the new land vibrated and became soft, called liquefaction. The sections of freeways that collapsed in the Sylmar earthquake in 1971 were the same ones that fell in the Northridge earthquake in 1994.

    • @whoever6458
      @whoever6458 11 месяцев назад +1

      I was also surprised that they didn't mention all the fill in San Fransisco nor liquefaction nor the fact that the same freeway fell in both Sylmar and Northridge. I was also socked that they didn't even mention Japan since that's one of the first things a lot of people think about when we think about Japan.

      Meanwhile western Washington is just like "ah, yes, we did indeed build one of the most populated areas of the country on top of backfill dumped into the puget sound and yes, we are indeed on top of a subduction zone. Same for hurricanes (at least in Florida), they suggest you have *at least* three days worth of water on hand, preferably five-to-seven just because if it really goes badly, they simply CANNOT physically get the trees off of the road fast enough to find everyone everywhere within just a day or two! And they even have heavy equipment to help them with clearing stuff, too! It's just not possible for them to do everything immediately...as with "Freedom", we need to do our own part in securing ourselves, Just In Case.

    • @whoever6458
      @whoever6458 11 месяцев назад

      The government doesn't even help you when there hasn't been a disaster and there's no way they'll help once there is one. Luckily no one died during our last 7 but I imagine it's going to be different when we finally get the 8 we're expecting. Those should be exciting times.

    I may be barely in my 20's and Mexican, but I can tell you that earthquakes are horrendos. In September 2017 I was on my way to highschool when it decided to strike, my automovile was swinging like crazy, when a huge crack sounded and then there was a column of smoke, when I heard the crack I told mu mom that something had broken, I later saw on the news that it was a buildin near where I was. The rest of the day was gloomy and the tension could be felt. I live in an infamous zone (from the 1985 earthquake in México City), Tlatelolco, and because this horrible tragedy of 1985 the Topos Tlatelolco where born, they are reliable. We should learn from these events to lend a hand when needed cause we don't know when the ones who will be needing it will be ourselves

      @jeffreydeeds9225 8 месяцев назад +1

      I would suspect it would be similar to stacking 10 or 15 coins on your roof. Not much at all. The materials used to build tall buildings largely come from the same area, so it results in a small, localized transfer of weight relative to the crust,. The weight transfer is small enough as to be insignificant regarding earthquakes.

    The Chile earthquake was 8.8 magnitude on Feb 27, 2010.
    Haitians dependent on everyone to provide aid and rebuild. The Chileans got a lot less international aid and rebuilt themselves.

    Quakes are the most deadly simply because we live like rats in an unstable maze. We are surrounded by structures built by the lowest bidder . Some a century old without up to date renovations . I’m lucky I live in the 1st world in a quake proof neighbourhood. Gas lines have been phased out here in favour of underground power lines everything in our buildings is electric much safer for the general public no more downed power lines during storms or car accidents etc. More efficient . Gas is so explosive & costly. Building will sway rather then crumble . If you stand out in a field during a massive quake the odds of you getting hurt or killed are slim . Nothing to fall on you right …
    The odds of the ground opening up
    between your legs is pretty unlikely lol. You may fall & bust a hip I probably would I have bad balance due to vertigo . But at least I’d be alive. It’s terrifying to live amongst concrete structures that’ are falling apart . Still gotta long ways to go around here & everywhere else . Trial & error

    • @clarktrent8952
      @clarktrent8952 Год назад +2

      a word about power source dangers and costs: Electric power, vs. having both electric & gas (since one can/t have gas-only like you can have electric-only) is potentially as dangerous as gas in an earthquake because of the heightened chances of electrocution in earthquake situations. Gas explodes, electricity electrocutes, your comment on cost relativity: in almost all of America, electricity is a cheaper source of heat for cooking and heating water and air... I lived in an all-electric apt. one winter... and the electric furnace and hot water bill was ***double*** what having gas hot water, furnace, and stove would have been. Google for your locale as proof, and/or Call your local power company(ies)
