On July 5, the European Union (EU) started imposing tariffs ranging from 17.4 percent to 37.6 percent on electric vehicles imported from China. This decision has encountered widespread opposition from government officials, industry associations and automotive companies in Germany. Horst Löchel, a professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, also believes that the tariffs are detrimental to Europe's economic recovery.

Politicians impose tariffs, but they are not economists and do understand the consequences.

Yup! The reckless Trump Trade Wars, China retaliation, relentless Biden Sanctions and equally severe Putin counter measures have collectively accelerated the permanent de-industrialization of most high income, thus high costs nations. NATO+ trade wars, sanctions and tariffs are desperate kamakaze strategies.

The easiest way to hit EU is the put tariff on large ICE cars but that will hurt Germany badly. China values German integration with the Chinese economy especially in high tech. It does not have a heart to hurt German because Germany has been also dependent on China more than any other country. It appears China is diverting its attention to French Brandy and European pork products which can save Germany a lot. My prediction is China will be selective in its reciprocation with the EU as not all European countries are hostile to China.

Most European products are made in China, so China would not be effected too much anyway.
